VIDEO: Malik Tillman's 'Bobby Valentino' haircut price admission sparks confusion as Thierry Henry, Micah Richards & Jamie Carragher grill USMNT star after PSV's Champions League draw with Borussia Dortmund

It was a big night on the field for Malik Tillman but it was his hair that was the main subject of debate in the CBS studios after the game.

Tillman won the penalty that earned PSV a valuable draw in their last 16 tie against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night. But pundits Micah Richards, Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry were keen to discuss the USMNT star's choice of hairstyle in their post-game interview, leading to a bizarre misunderstanding.

Richard's got the ball rolling, asking Tillman about the style he compared to R&B star Bobby Valentino. Quizzed about how much it costs to get a haircut in Eindhoven, the forward replied "Three euros fifty," which the panel took to mean €350.

Henry then weighed in to ask if the barber also cooked for him with a rate that high, only for Tillman to clarify that he meant €3.50, triggering a cacophony of laughter in the studio.

Hair chat aside it was a big night for the 21-year-old who played the entire 90 minutes and was at the centre of the night's most controversial incident. Tillman was judged to have been fouled in the area by Mats Hummels for a penalty that allowed Luuk de Jong to level the game.

Hummels was irate, claiming to have made incidental contact with his opponent after winning the ball cleanly. VAR chose not to intervene leaving the German international fuming and immediately looking for his phone after the game to vent his frustration on social media.

Linked-away Ashley Fletcher could finally get his career going again with return to Sunderland

According to a recent report from The Northern Echo, Ashley Fletcher’s future remains far from certain heading into the rest of the January window. The 23-year-old currently plays his football at Championship outfit Middlesbrough and has done so since leaving West Ham back in 2017, but struggles for regular game time under Boro boss Tony Pulis this season has plunged his future on Teesside into doubt.

And a recent report from The Northern Echo suggests that the second tier outfit are happy to offload the young striker this month in a bid to raise funds, which should be of keen interest to Sunderland manager Jack Ross, as moving back to the Stadium of Light could be what Fletcher needs to finally get his stagnating career going.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the 23-year-old came up through the ranks at Premier League giants Manchester United but failed to make a senior appearance for the Red Devils, eventually leaving Old Trafford back in 2016 in a bid to progress with his professional career.

And while a loan spell at Barnsley, in what proved to be his final season at United, was fruitful, having netted nine times in 27 games for the Tykes, things simply haven’t worked out at all for the Englishman since then with a failed stint at West Ham, and indeed a failing stint at Middlesbrough.

And with just six Championship appearances for Pulis’ Boro so far this season, things don’t look like improving anytime soon for Fletcher at the North East club, but a move across the region to the Stadium of Light could be what he needs to finally move forward with his professional career.

Yes, Sunderland fans won’t forget the testing loan spell the 23-year-old had at their club in the second half of last season, as the youngster made the move to the Stadium of Light in a bid to aid the Black Cats with their Championship survival, only to bag twice in 16 league games for Chris Coleman’s men as they eventually lost their second tier status.

But with things very much looking up at Sunderland this time round under new boss Ross, what with the Black Cats third in League One heading into the second half of the campaign, he’d be going into a completely different environment to last term, and one that might just enable him to rebuild his confidence after a testing few years.

Ultimately, there is clearly a very adept striker in Fletcher given he bagged nine times for Barnsley in League One back in 2016, while his struggles in any league higher than that suggests that, for the time being, the third tier is very much his level.

And with the Black Cats eyeing up an immediate return to the Championship this season, having a player like Fletcher in their ranks could prove to be a huge asset to Ross as the campaign progresses – and with top-scorer Josh Maja reportedly (as per the BBC) on his way out of the club this month, a striker will likely be top of Ross’ priorities.

And they could do a lot worse than seek to lure £3.15 million-rated Fletcher (as per Transfermarkt) back to the Stadium of Light – yes, things didn’t go at all well last time round for the 23-year-old, but in a forward-thinking and upwardly-mobile Sunderland team, a move back to the North East giants could be exactly what he needs to get his career going again.

Significantly, it could also seriously aid the Black Cats in their quest to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Maguire defends Rashford after woeful performanceMade '11 mistakes' against Newcastle UnitedNewcastle beat Man Utd 1-0WHAT HAPPENED?

The English forward had a night to forget against Newcastle United as he made as many as 11 mistakes – which were listed down by a frustrated fan after the match – as United suffered yet another defeat in the Premier League on Saturday.

Despite a poor show at St. James' Park, former club captain Maguire came to the defence of his colleague as he claimed that Rashford is just experiencing a rough patch of form after a terrific 2022/23 campaign with the team.

AdvertisementWHAT HARRY MAGUIRE SAID

Speaking to reporters after the match, the defender said, "Marcus had an unbelievable season last season. This season, it hasn't clicked for him. He's working hard. Everyone in that dressing room knows what he's about."

He added, "It's been a tough week with three away days in six days. To be fair, in the first half, we looked like we'd played our third away day in six days.

"The tempo wasn't there, the intensity wasn't there. They were a lot better than us. We grew into the game, but we didn't have enough in the end."

Manager Erik ten Hag refused to speak about his striker's performance in public as he stated after the match that he would prefer to speak to the player directly in private.

After a stellar performance last season where he scored 17 Premier League goals and played a crucial role in his team finishing in the top four, the 26-year-old has struggled to find form in the ongoing campaign having scored just twice across all competitions.

Resurgent Raheem Sterling is being screwed out of an England Euro 2024 place by Gareth Southgate's inconsistent selection policy

The Three Lions boss is making a rod for his own back with a contradictory selection policy that is shafting on-form players

England have already qualified for Euro 2024. All the Three Lions need to do in facile fixtures against Malta and North Macedonia is ensure that they will be one of the top seeds in next month's finals draw in Germany.

Fair to say, then, that this could have been a relatively boring international break for England fans – had Gareth Southgate not once again inexplicably overlooked Raheem Sterling, with Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Jarrod Bowen the chosen widemen.

The absence of the Chelsea winger from a fifth consecutive squad hasn't just caused controversy; it's provoked all sorts of speculation surrounding Sterling and Southgate.

Getty'Something has definitely happened'

Both Alan Shearer and Michah Richards are convinced that "something has definitely happened" behind the scenes that we don't yet know about, while Rio Ferdinand has even issued a public plea to "free Raheem Sterling!"

"I don't know what he's done, whose nose he's put out of joint," the former Manchester United defender said on the podcast. "Was it him coming back from the tournament or something like that?"

Ferdinand was obviously alluding to the fact that Sterling briefly returned to England during last year's World Cup because of a burglary at his family home – and that kind of conjecture does a great disservice to Southgate, who was very supporting of the attacker at the time. However, while such talk is unhelpful, and potentially harmful, it's also inevitable in the circumstances, given Southgate's Sterling snub makes zero sense.

AdvertisementGettyOut of favour

There's absolutely no denying that Sterling made a somewhat subdued start to his Chelsea career, after his high-profile move from Manchester City in the summer of 2022, but he still travelled to Qatar as a trusted member of Southgate's line-up, only to lose his starting spot by the time England were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Injury ruled him out of the start of the start of the qualification campaign for the Euros, in March, but it was nonetheless a surprise to see him overlooked for the June clashes with Malta and North Macedonia.

Sterling may have endured a difficult debut season at Stamford Bridge, but Southgate has become renowned for picking players performing poorly at club level simply because they have served him well in the past.

GettyOne rule for one…

Harry Maguire continued to be called up even while spending most of his time on the bench at Old Trafford, Jordan Henderson is still in the squad even though he's now struggling in Saudi Arabia, while it's a complete farce that Kalvin Phillips has held onto his place given he's barely got a run-out for Manchester City in the past two years.

Phillips undeniably played a key role in England's run to the final of Euro 2020 – but why hasn't Sterling benefited from the same level of loyalty given he was arguably his country's best player at the tournament?

GettyDon't change a winning team?

Southgate has argued that the "landscape" has changed; that the competition for places, particularly in attack, is now fiercer than ever before. However, when asked to explain why Sterling had been omitted from the England squad for the October internationals, he pointed out that the likes of Ollie Watkins and Jarrod Bowen were "both in a hot streak of form". "That's the thinking," the manager explained.

But this time around, he effectively admitted that he was reluctant to change a winning team. "I can only repeat what I've said in the last few squad selection meetings," he said. "The team is playing really well. It's as simple as that, really.

"[Raheem] wasn't available in March or June and the team started on a good run. We won in Italy for the first time in 60 years, while the two performances in June were excellent, so we stuck with that group."

Newcastle player ratings vs PSG: All hail the Geordie boys! Local lads Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff the unlikely heroes as Champions League makes triumphant return to Tyneside

An Eddie Howe masterclass helped the Magpies secure a thumping European win over the French champions at St. James' Park

Newcastle secured a famous Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain with a 4-1 win on Tyneside on Wednesday night. The Magpies took the lead in the 17th minute as they pounced on a defensive error from Marquinhos, and a few seconds later Miguel Almiron fired past goalkeeper Gigi Donnarumma.

Dan Burn doubled the hosts' advantage as he powered home a towering header shortly before half-time, and fellow local lad Sean Longstaff put his side into dreamland with a powerful strike that proved too hot for Donnarumma after the break.

Lucas Hernandez pulled a goal back for the visitors, who had more than 70 percent possession but registered just one shot on target, only for Fabian Schar to complete the rout in second-half stoppage-time with a long-range runner to give the hosts their first Champions League win in 20 years.

GOAL rates Newcastle's players from St James' Park…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Nick Pope (7/10):

Didn't have a great deal to do despite the wealth of attacking talent PSG have at their disposal. Was perhaps a tad slow to follow the flight of a deflected ball for Hernandez's goal but saved well from Dembele late on.

Kieran Trippier (8/10):

Wasn't really troubled by arguably the world's best player in Mbappe and beautifully set up Longstaff for Newcastle's third of the night. He didn't track Hernandez's run into the box for PSG's consolation goal but a solid outing for the right-back.

Jamaal Lascelles (8/10):

Was defensively solid at the back in what was a rare start for the club captain. Put his body on the line as Botman was not badly missed.

Fabian Schar (8/10):

Missed a glorious chance to sweep home a clever corner from Trippier when unmarked but fired just wide. Apart from that, was relatively untroubled on the night. Put the cherry on the cake with a stunning curled effort from outside the box to make it 4-1.

Dan Burn (7/10):

Initially struggled at times against the pacey Dembele but powered home a towering header to make it 2-0. Was isolated on occasion but still was solid enough in defence.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Sean Longstaff (8/10):

Took his goal well and helped Newcastle's midfield get the better of PSG's for long periods.

Bruno Guimaraes (9/10):

Had the wherewithal to cut out Marquinhos' floated pass in the build-up to Newcastle's opener and beautifully set up Burn with a dinked cross to the big defender. Never stopped running and is worth his weight in gold.

Sandro Tonali (8/10):

Was a real enforcer in the centre of the park. A good engine across the pitch and seemed to make the right decisions at the right time.

Getty ImagesAttack

Miguel Almiron (9/10):

Showed excellent composure to drill a first-time effort into the corner to make it 1-0. Got the better of Hernandez as well. PSG couldn't get to grips with him for much of the night.

Alexander Isak (8/10):

Threatened PSG's backline with his pace and trickery, and his strike on goal set up Almiron's opener. Was bruised and bloodied but gave his all for his team, despite a quiet second half.

Anthony Gordon (9/10):

Continued his fine form this season with a tenacious and battling display on the left side of Newcastle's attack. Offered something both in attack and defence.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Elliot Anderson (7/10):

Looked lively when he came on and was keen to run at PSG's shaky defence.

Jacob Murphy (7/10):

Put in the hard yards for his team when he came off the bench in the second half.

Eddie Howe (9/10):

Something of a tactical masterclass from the manager. His side outthought and outfought the visitors, their high press worked wonders, and they played intelligent football throughout.

At 39-years-old and with his contract at Chelsea set to expire at the end of the season, Silva is thought to be coming close to retirement from the game.

The Brazil international has enjoyed a glittering, extensive career at the top of world football. After spells in Brazil and Russia, he spent three seasons as a star at AC Milan, where he won a Serie A title, before going on to lift seven Ligue 1 titles in eight years at Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea snapped the veteran up in 2020 and he remains a mainstay in Mauricio Pochettino's starting XI. Alongside goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, he is the only Chelsea player to play every minute of Premier League football so far this season.

WHAT THEY SAID

While he plans on continuing for at least one more season, he is eyeing a step into coaching once he does decide to call time on his career.

He told : "On the pitch I’m already a bit of a manager, right? As I watch the game from the back, I see a lot of situations. And then I warn [the others] about certain situations. I talk to the staff, to Pochettino, so that we don’t make mistakes. Sometimes, only us on the pitch realise what’s wrong and what could be done better. And there are situations that those who are off the pitch, with a clear mind, see much better. This relationship is important.
