Newcastle transfer news on Fofana

Newcastle United are reportedly now the ‘most interested’ in signing Seko Fofana in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Standout season

Fofana is having a standout season in Ligue 1, starting off by winning their Player of the Month Award (POTM) in September.

He ranks as one of the best central midfield players in the division to have made 10 or appearances this season, and the second-best player at Lens, scoring five goals and averaging the most shots and dribbles per game out of his teammates (WhoScored).

Described as the ‘heartbeat’ of the team by journalist Josh Bunting, it is not a surprise at all to see the St. James’ Park faithful now linked with a move for Fofana this month.

The Latest: Newcastle ‘most interested’

As per Foot Mercato journalist and transfer expert Santi Aouna, the North East club are now the ‘most interested’ in signing Fofana, but there is also ‘real interest’ from both Leeds United and Burnley for his signature.

However, Lens have not received any offers for the Ivory Coast international as of yet.

The Verdict: Sign him up

With Fofana thriving in Ligue 1, he is surely ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

Dubbed a ‘phenom’ by journalist Zach Lowy after a dominating performance against PSG’s midfield last month, the six-foot-one star would really freshen things up in the middle of the park for Eddie Howe’s team, and at 26 years of age, he has likely not yet hit his prime.

Nonetheless, if there is a deal that can be done within the next few weeks, especially with the competition that they face, surely it is a no-brainer to bring him to Tyneside.

Spurs table bid to sign Benjamin Mensah

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur have now made a ‘formal move’ to sign Peterborough United defender Benjamin Mensah, with an offer already tabled.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye rising stars…

Reports over this past week have claimed that the Lilywhites and transfer chief Fabio Paratici haven’t just got their sights set on marquee first team additions, but also potential stars for the future.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, as well as Mensah, who has a confirmed admirer in Spurs according to Peterborough club chief Barry Fry, the club are also targeting exciting Middlesbrough wing-back Djed Spence amid his brilliant loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

As Tottenham step up their chase for Mensah in particular, Football Insider have shared news on an offer from the club.

The Latest: Tottenham bid tabled…

According to their sources, Spurs have tabled a £200,000 bid to sign the 19-year-old, but it has swiftly been rejected by Posh.

Tottenham have apparently made a ‘formal move’ for the player this month but, as it stands, Peterborough are holding firm over their promising talent.

As the Championship club hold out for a higher fee, Spurs are weighing up whether to return with an improved bid as they ‘set their sights’ on signing Mensah.

The Verdict: Get it done…

The right-back comes as a potential alternative to Spence, who is attracting interest from a few big Premier League clubs, and he has certainly shown signs of promise after signing his first professional deal in December 2020.

Able to pay as a more conventional right-back or even at right wing-back, he could be of use to Spurs manager Antonio Conte in future seasons.

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson has said that the 19-year-old has all the qualities in a modern day full-back, whilst calling him ‘aggressive’ and ‘excellent’ in one-vs-one situations (GhanaWeb).

If Tottenham decide to come back in with a bigger offer for Mensah, they could yet secure a real one-to-watch for years to come.

Somerset put themselves in contention

Somerset moved back into contention for a first ever County Championship title with a nine-wicket victory over Lancashire at Taunton

09-Sep-2010
ScorecardSomerset moved back into contention for a first ever County Championship title with a nine-wicket victory over Lancashire at Taunton. The 23 points gained by the home side took them to within two of leaders Nottinghamshire and they will go to Durham for their final game next week in confident mood.Charl Willoughby took 3 for 37 and Alfonso Thomas 3 for 53 as Lancashire were bowled out for 170 in their second innings, Steven Croft top-scoring with 46. That left Somerset needing just 48 to win and they knocked off the required runs in 8.4 overs for the loss of skipper Marcus Trescothick. Nick Compton was unbeaten on 30 at the end.The day began with Somerset 350 for 8 in their first innings, leading by 91 runs. Ben Phillips fell quickly, but Murali Kartik, unbeaten on 38 overnight, moved to his second half-century of the season off 70 balls with eight fours and a six. Some lusty blows from last man Willoughby helped extend the lead to 123 before he was run out by Simon Kerrigan.Lancashire’s hopes of getting back into the game suffered a double blow with their second innings score on 22. Paul Horton was unhappy at being judged lbw to Phillips for two and Tom Smith was caught by Peter Trego at third slip driving at a Willoughby away-swinger.It was 32 for 3 when Mark Chilton was pinned leg before by a ball from Thomas that nipped back off the seam. Then Thomas claimed the key wicket of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, on 20, with a delivery that kept low and brought another lbw decision. At lunch the scoreboard read 62 for 4 and the total was extended to 109 before Croft’s battling innings ended when he was given out caught in the gully off bat and pad, having faced 101 balls and hit five fours. The batsman signalled his annoyance at the decision by kicking the ground and swishing his bat angrily several times on the way back to the pavilion. In the same Trego over Gareth Cross was also out to a bat-pad catch, this time the ball carrying through to wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter. Saj Mahmood also fell for a duck, lbw to Phillips with the total on 116, but Luke Procter (32) and Kyle Hogg (37 not out) ensured that Somerset would have to bat again with a stand of 41.Procter was caught behind cutting at Willoughby, having faced 108 balls, but Gary Keedy and Kerrigan both departed without scoring as Somerset, encouraged by the result at Trent Bridge, moved in for the kill. Lancashire took five points from the game and must now watch the outcome of a three-horse race for the title in the final round of matches as Nottinghamshire, Somerset and Yorkshire tussle for top spot.

Sri Lanka seek first win in Australia

ESPNcricinfo’s preview of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Hobart

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale13-Dec-2012Match factsRangana Herath is Test cricket’s leading wicket taker over the past year, but can he transfer his home form to Australian conditions?•Associated PressDecember 14-18, Bellerive Oval
Start time 1030 (2330 GMT)Big PictureFor Australian cricket fans, it will be difficult not to think that the main course has been served before the entrée. The battle with South Africa for the No.1 Test ranking has come and gone, all before the most popular part of Australia’s international cricket season, the Christmas and New Year period. But as New Zealand showed with their victory in Hobart last summer, classic Test matches can pop up at any time, against any opponent, and now it is Sri Lanka’s turn to attempt to produce the unexpected. It is not that Sri Lanka are a weak Test team, far from it, but their record away from home is disappointing. Leaving aside Bangladesh, Sri Lanka have won only two away Tests in the past five years, and they are yet to win a Test in Australia. But they will take inspiration from their most recent Test in Hobart, when Kumar Sangakkara was driving Sri Lanka towards an incredible chase of 507 when he was wrongly given out caught off his shoulder. Had the DRS been around, it might well have become one of the greatest Test victories of all time.Sangakkara is back, and along with Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan forms a formidable batting line-up. Sri Lanka’s main issue is finding a way to take 20 wickets. But for all the talk of their less-than-threatening seam attack – Rodney Hogg said this week that ”Sri Lanka have the worst new ball attack that has landed on our shores ever” – Shaminda Eranga showed against the Australians on debut in Colombo last year that he is a bowler to watch out for, and he should enjoy the Australian conditions far more than those at home. Much will also depend on how Rangana Herath transfers his home form to the Australian pitches. The Sri Lankan attack will be coming up against an evolving batting order. Australia’s first Test in the post-Ponting era will also be their first with Phillip Hughes at No.3 and Shane Watson at No.4. It is an order they hope can take them through all of next year and a pair of Ashes series, but if there are any cracks in the plan or nerves amongst the batsmen, it is up to Sri Lanka to find them. Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey at Nos.5 and 6 could hardly be in finer touch, so it is all the more important that Sri Lanka don’t let Australia’s top order feast.Form guide(Most recent first)
Australia LDDWD
Sri Lanka LWDDWIn the spotlightPhillip Hughes is only 24, but he has already had a number of incarnations in Australia’s Test team. The previous one ended in Hobart last December, when he couldn’t avoid edging to the cordon off Chris Martin, a recurring theme in that series against New Zealand. His return will come at the same venue, albeit batting at No.3 instead of opening, and facing one of Test cricket’s less imposing seam attacks. All the more reason he must make use of this opportunity. Over the past year, Hughes has worked hard to improve his leg-side play and widen his scoring areas, but whether he can translate that to Test cricket is one of the big questions to be answered in this series.Who is the leading Test wicket taker over the past 12 months? Graeme Swann? Vernon Philander? James Anderson? No, no and no. It’s Rangana Herath, who since this time last year has collected 64 Test victims at 20.64. Although it is true that much of his success has come in home conditions – he took 20 wickets in the two recent Tests against New Zealand in Sri Lanka, and 12 against England in Galle – he will still be a challenging opponent for Australia’s batsmen. In his newspaper column on Thursday, Michael Clarke wrote that Herath’s accuracy and clever variations made him a difficult prospect, and in his first Test in Australia, in Hobart this week, Herath should take note of Shane Warne’s oft-quoted advice: “If it seams, it spins”.Team newsHughes has replaced Ponting in the side and will bat at No.3, with Shane Watson moving down to No.4. Australia’s only real question was which bowler to leave out, and Michael Clarke announced on the day before the match that Mitchell Johnson would carry the drinks.Australia 1 Ed Cowan, 2 David Warner, 3 Phillip Hughes, 4 Shane Watson, 5 Michael Clarke (capt), 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Peter Siddle, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Ben Hilfenhaus, 11 Nathan Lyon.Dimuth Karunaratne will partner Tillakaratne Dilshan at the top of the order, with Tharanga Paranavitana having been dropped after struggling for his best form for some time now. Nuwan Kulasekara will play after sitting out of the tour match in Canberra, where Shaminda Eranga was the best of the bowlers. They will be joined by Chanaka Welegedara in the pace attack, with no room for Dhammika Prasad.Sri Lanka 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Dimuth Karunaratne, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Shaminda Eranga, 11 Chanaka Welegedara.Pitch and conditionsThere are showers forecast for the first four days of the game, which won’t make conditions easy for the batsmen, especially on a Bellerive Oval surface that has been relaid this year and has resulted in some awfully seam-friendly conditions in Sheffield Shield matches. In the three games there this season, the totals in the first innings for the team batting first have been 112, 95 and 67. However, the curator Marcus Pamplin is confident that the Test won’t suffer the same fate.”With such a major restoration of over 70 cubic metres of soil of new black soil into the wicket table, the process of the clay to settle down will take time, but we believe we are in a far better position for a more consistent surface than at the start of the season,” Pamplin said. “On the back of a good cricket pitch for the last Sheffield Shield game we think the Test pitch should play better and provide a good contest.”Stats and trivia Sri Lanka have only beaten Australia once in a Test match, in Kandy in 1999. The only remaining player from either side who was part of that game is Mahela Jayawardene Sangakkara needs another 107 runs to reach 10,000 in Tests and become the 11th man to the milestone This will be Australia’s first Test in Hobart without Ricky Ponting since 1995, when David Boon was the only Tasmanian in the side against PakistanQuotes”None of us will be taking Sri Lanka’s bowlers for granted even though they may be largely unknown in Australia. It was our batting which let us down during the last Test in Perth.”

Newcastle: Wilson timeline revealed

A huge update has emerged on Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson, regarding a setback with his injury situation…

What’s the latest?

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has relayed an update from the Magpies boss on the attacker’s road to recovery, following the 1-0 loss to Cambridge. The ex-Bournemouth man has been missing since the 1-1 draw with Manchester United and his manager has now provided some extra clarity over when he is due to return.

He Tweeted: “Eddie Howe says Callum Wilson is expected to be out for 8 weeks following his scan yesterday.”

Gutted

Newcastle fans will surely be gutted by this news as the forward’s absence will be a major blow for the club over the next two months or so. He is the side’s top goalscorer in the Premier League and they will surely miss his lethal presence in the penalty area in the coming weeks.

Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin are the only Newcastle players who have scored more than one Premier League goal this season and this highlights their importance to the team. Howe is not blessed with quality options in the final third of the pitch and he has not lost his best one for a considerable amount of time.

With the Magpies sitting 19th in the table and scrapping for survival, losing their top finisher has come at a horrible time. They are in desperate need of points and wins to take them out of the bottom three and their main goalscoring threat picking up a severe injury has dampened their chances of doing so, which is why fans will be frustrated by this news.

Wilson has scored six goals in 14 starts this season after managing 12 in 23 starts last term. This shows that he knows how to find the back of the net at Premier League level and is able to score goals consistently and this makes his injury a major blow for the Magpies.

Of course, the January transfer window is now open and the club have the opportunity to strengthen their attack before the end of the month. However, there is no guarantee that anyone who comes in will be able to match Wilson’s efforts, which is why this injury news will leave fans gutted irrespective of what Howe does in the market.

2022 is nearly here, which means the January transfer window is soon on the horizon.

Tottenham Hotspur have had mixed success in the market, especially during the winter.

Will Antonio Conte get the backing he needs to steer this sinking Spurs ship around? That remains to be seen.

Some of the Lilywhites’ signings over the years have etched their way into folklore, whilst others… the less said, the better. But how many of these obscure signings from yesteryear can you actually name?

Wolves handed a major Raul Jimenez boost

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been handed a major boost regarding Raul Jimenez’s future availability.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by Birmingham Live, the government’s recent decision to take all countries off of the UK’s red list for foreign travel has handed Bruno Lage’s side a significant boost regarding the centre-forward’s availability, as the 30-year-old will no longer be required to quarantine upon his return from international duty with Mexico.

Gerardo Martino’s side are due to face Panama in World Cup Qualifying next February, a fixture which, prior to the recent changes, would have resulted in Jimenez having to quarantine for 10 days upon his return to the UK. Mexico are also set to take part in a number of international friendlies in the coming months, which could also have seen the striker ruled out of a number of Premier League fixtures due to the previous red list rules.

Lage will be buzzing

Considering just how important a part of the Wolves first team Jimenez has proven himself to be in recent seasons, with returns of 17 and 27 goals in his first two campaigns at Molineux, the news that he will be free to travel to and from international duty with Mexico without restriction is sure to have left Lage buzzing.

Indeed, while the forward has not exactly been in the best goalscoring form of his career in the current campaign, the £25.2m-rated marksman has nevertheless impressed over his nine Premier League appearances, scoring one goal, registering two assists and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 2.1 shots and making 2.2 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the player who Nuno Espirito Santo dubbed a “special” talent average a SofaScore match rating of 6.94, ranking him as the club’s joint fifth-best performer in the league.

As such, the fact that Lage will no longer have to worry about the striker being unavailable due to travel restriction rules will certainly come as a major boost for the 45-year-old, who will undoubtedly be hoping that the £41k-per-week Jimenez can fire his side to a top-half finish this season.

In other news: Lage must unleash £40k-p/w Wolves “outstanding talent” who could become “a top player”

Does Johnston have a future at Celtic?

The career of Mikey Johnston has flattered to deceive on many an occasion at Celtic with several Hoops managers now failing to get the best from him at Parkhead.

Whether that is down to the coaching, the player, or positional rivals is very much a cause for debate.

This term, the 22-year-old has had to compete with the likes of Jota, Liel Abada and even Kyogo Furuhashi on the flanks meaning game time has been severely limited.

However, he has very rarely grabbed his opportunity with both hands. After Jota was ruled out through injury, Ange Postecoglou challenged the young Scot to grab the bull by the horns.

“Ultimately, we need guys like Mikey and Liel (Abada) to step up, that’s why they’re here at the club.

“And if the opportunity exists for them it’s up to them to take it,” the Australian said.

However, just as a chance presents itself, Johnston is out injured again. He missed the club’s last gasp win over Ross County last night and after that, there should really be no way back for the Celtic man in Glasgow.

In the words of Frank McAvennie, this is a problem that’s been going on “for years now.”

He told Football Insider this week: “He’s barely getting a game and when he does play he is really struggling.

“Sell him. I would like to see him moved on for the benefit of his own career. Ange gave him a chance with Jota out and he’s not done anything.

“Some fans might disagree but he’s simply not good enough for what Ange is trying to build.”

It’s hard to disagree with those sentiments. Johnston has scored just 11 times in his Hoops career and is yet to find the net for Postecoglou this term.

In the process of amassing that disappointing number, the attacker has spent over 557 days on the treatment table and has missed around 68 fixtures.

He may only earn a weekly salary of £7.9k-per-week but that money is surely better spent on someone of greater quality or even a player who doesn’t take up so much time with the physios.

It seems harsh but ultimately, the winger has not delivered on the pitch with his performances or with his fitness.

After breaking on the scene in 2018, divisive figure Chris Sutton tweeted the following: “Is Mikey Johnston the new Ryan Christie? Celtic’s fringe players at the start of the season coming to the fore when it counts.”

Sadly, he has not stood up and been counted on too many occasions since and just like Christie, he must seek a new club.

Palace fans slam Zaha vs Leeds

Flocking to Twitter, many Crystal Palace fans bemoaned the performance of star Wilfried Zaha as their side succumbed to a 1-0 loss against Leeds United on Tuesday evening.

Patrick Vieira’s men, looking to record a first win since back-to-back victories against Man City and Wolves a month ago, left Elland Road disappointed thanks to some late drama.

The Eagles had chances to take control with striker Christian Benteke missing two big opportunities – first heading wide of the mark from close range and then seeing another late effort gathered by keeper Illan Meslier just before it crossed the goal line.

Palace were made to pay for their lack of ruthlessness when defender Marc Guehi’s handball gifted Leeds a penalty in added-time, with star man Raphinha going on to coolly slot home the eventual winner.

Palace fans slam Zaha…

As such, Vieira’s side remain just six points off the drop zone as fans took to social media with criticism, sharing their verdicts on winger Zaha in particular.

Some Eagles fans cited what they believe is a lack of form over the last few games whilst others even call for their highest-paid player to be dropped.

According to SofaScore, Zaha ranked in among the lowest-rated Palace players against Leeds with a 6.7/10 – and it appears he endured a tough afternoon against Marcelo Bielsa’s defence.

The 29-year-old won just seven of his 20 ground duels in Yorkshire whilst managing zero shots on target for the whole 90 minutes (SofaScore).

Zaha also gave away possession a seismic 24 times, leaving little wonder why many fans shown their frustration on Twitter.

Steyn, Tendulkar star on intense day

Dale Steyn continued his hostility after tea, taking two wickets to complete his 16th five-wicket haul, but it was Morne Morkel who got the prized wicket of Sachin Tendulkar and hastened the end of the Indian innings

The Bulletin by George Binoy04-Jan-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Sachin Tendulkar’s 51st Test ton was made special by the circumstances in which it came•AFPOn the third day of the deciding Test in Newlands, the world’s best fast bowler terrorised the acclaimed batsmen of the No. 1 team with frightening spells of accurate outswing bowling at high speed. Most did not survive the menacing attack, but the world’s best batsman did, and he dragged his team forward through the harshest of circumstances. The battle between Dale Steyn, oozing aggression every ball, and Sachin Tendulkar, who remained steadfast despite being beaten probably more often than on any other day, was alone worth the ticket money. Both champions were winners, for Steyn ripped out five in the innings, while Tendulkar fought hard for his 51st century. Their efforts left the contest even – India lead’s was merely 2 – and ensured that the series would be decided by a second-innings shootout in the shadow of Table Mountain. The absence of the same degree of pace, swing, seam movement and hostility when India’s fast bowlers attacked South Africa’s batsmen only increased awe for Steyn’s efforts. Graeme Smith and Alviro Petersen made a promising start to the chase, adding 50 runs for the first wicket. Only Harbhajan Singh’s twin strikes close to stumps, fizzing the ball off a wearing pitch, brought the game back into balance.Steyn bowled only 18 overs today, but to India’s batsmen it was an eternity. He charged in at full pelt on the hottest day of the Test, his sinewy body taut, and delivered a barrage of outswingers that curved in towards middle stump before searing away off the pitch. His spells in the first session were among the finest unrewarded efforts and India, with luck and application, survived them to claw forward. After lunch, however, Steyn’s luck changed with the second new ball, and his sustained hostility during a spell that incredibly was more aggressive than the first, yielded two wickets and set India back considerably. For India, there was Tendulkar, pulling them along when all others apart from Gautam Gambhir failed, relying on the strength of his mind, faith in his technique and a little bit of luck. His 146 will rank among his finest hundreds because of the rigorous examinations he passed. Tendulkar was beaten innumerable times by Steyn’s outswingers and Lonwabo Tsotsobe’s extra bounce outside off stump, and cut in half repeatedly by Morne Morkel’s jagging in-cutters. But Tendulkar survived, and attacked when he could. His 176-run stand with Gambhir gave India the edge, which vanished once four wickets fell for 43 runs. In Harbhajan, Tendulkar had a fighting partner, and their partnership of 76 for the eighth wicket once again helped India claw ahead. The tone for a crackling day was set in the very first over, delivered by Steyn. The first ball sped towards Tendulkar, landed on good length, reared up, seamed away late and beat the bat. The second was fuller, swung away and took the edge as Tendulkar lunged forward. Mark Boucher caught it too, diving forward to take a low chance, but strangely his appeal had little support from Steyn. The third fell short of gully, again off Tendulkar’s edge, and he brought up his half-century, having resumed overnight on 49. The fourth beat the bat as well. For the fifth, Tendulkar stood out of his crease to counter the swing and drove to the extra-cover boundary. He defended the sixth, and had survived the best over of the Test.Smart Stats

The 176 run stand for the third wicket between Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir is the highest for India in Tests in South Africa.

Tendulkar’s 146 is his second century in Cape Town. He now has 475 runs in six innings at an average of 79.16 with two centuries and two half-centuries.

Harbhajan Singh put on 76 for the seventh wicket with Tendulkar, which is second on the list of highest partnerships for the seventh wicket for India in Tests in South Africa.

Harbhajan has been involved in 20 fifty-plus partnerships in his Test career, of which 11 have come since the beginning of 2008.

Dale Steyn picked up his fourth five-wicket haul against India in Tests. It was also his second five-wicket haul of the series.

Steyn also reached the landmark of 50 Test wickets against India in just his tenth Test. Steyn’s average of 18.53 is fourth on the list of bowlers who have reached this mark against India,.

Morkel began his spell by testing Gambhir’s patience with a succession of short-of-a-length deliveries that bounced steeply outside off stump. Only in the eighth over of the day did Gambhir’s discipline in leaving deliveries outside off waver, and he was beaten often. For 53 minutes, the spectators at the Kelvin Grove only got to see Tendulkar batting from behind, while those at the Wynberg End had the same view of Gambhir. Tendulkar faced all five overs of Steyn’s first spell, while Gambhir negotiated Morkel. The runs came only in twos and fours, a lot of them through edges, and 42 out of the first 50 balls were dots.Tsotsobe replaced Steyn for the 61st over and continued the trend of beating Tendulkar’s bat. Tendulkar responded with a powerful pull to the midwicket boundary and a carve over gully. In Tsotsobe’s next over, the 13th of the morning, Tendulkar flicked through midwicket for the day’s first single.Soon Paul Harris’ deliveries were jumping at Gambhir for he was bowling wider, aiming for the rough. One ball in the 72nd over leapt at Gambhir and kissed the glove but Boucher failed to take a tough chance. The next ball was straighter and took the edge, this time Boucher held it. Harris could have had Tendulkar as well, had he been quick enough to catch a ball that was travelling at scary speed. Instead, he got Laxman out, as the ball split his fingers and crashed into the stumps at the non-striker’s end.India resumed after lunch on 237 for 4 and Steyn was back at his best. After five dot balls, he produced an outswinger to rival the famed one that bowled Michael Vaughan. This time, Cheteshwar Pujara’s pad was in the way. MS Dhoni lasted three balls, wafting at one that swerved away to slip. Harbhajan looked like he would get out every ball, so hapless was he against Steyn. One outswinger even clipped his off stump but the bails, incredibly, stayed on.Tendulkar tried to take strike as Steyn approached his five-overs-per-spell limit and shielded Harbhajan. He had earlier brought up his century by top-edging a hook off Morkel for six over the wicketkeeper, after being cut in half by the previous ball. The plan worked, for Harbhajan mowed Tsotsobe for six over the leg side, and when Steyn returned for a fiery burst just before tea, Harbhajan was confident enough to loft him over the long-on boundary to bring the deficit below fifty. Through it all, was Tendulkar, cutting and driving India forward. Both batsmen didn’t last long after tea, with a refueled Steyn claiming his fifth when Harbhajan top-edged a hook to square leg. With Zaheer for company, Tendulkar took the responsibility of playing Steyn and succeeded in adding valuable runs. He eventually fell to Morkel, losing his off bail to a delivery that straightened past his bat, when so many had jagged into him previously. He departed with India 21 runs behind South Africa, but had taken them far closer than seemed possible when Steyn was blowing red-hot.
