Champions League Power Rankings: Who will lift the trophy in Istanbul?

Europe's premier club competition enters the quarter-final stage, with eight teams still vying it out to make it to Istanbul this summer

With club football having returned with a bang following the international break, the stage is set for the final stages of this season's Champions League.

After some thrilling last-16 ties, eight teams remain in the hunt for Europe's premier club competition.

So which teams are now shaping up as potential favourites to win the whole tournament, and who is unlikely to make it past the quarter-finals?

Goal power ranks the teams left in this season's competition…

They may have caused the shock of the last 16 by knocking out Juventus, but Porto remain huge outsiders to go all the way in this season's competition.

Sergio Conceicao's side are on a four-match winning run in Liga NOS, but with key players suspended for Tuesday's first leg against Chelsea, they face an uphill battle to take down Thomas Tuchel's team in the quarter-finals.

Following Saturday's defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt, Dortmund's best route into next season's Champions League now looks to be going all the way this time around.

Drawing Manchester City in the quarter-finals, then, is not what the Bundesliga outfit would have wanted, and Erling Haaland will likely have to play out of his skin if a BVB team with just one win from their last five are to stun Pep Guardiola's side over the course of the next 10 days.

Are Liverpool back? Probably not all the way, but the signs are that Jurgen Klopp's side are starting to find some self-belief following a disastrous start to 2021.

The Reds' last-16 win over RB Leipzig provided some respite and those wins, coupled with recent victories over Wolves and Arsenal, mean the Premier League champions go into their tie against Real Madrid confident of gaining revenge for their 2018 final defeat.

After seeing off Barcelona in the last-16, PSG would have been forgiven for believing that they were well placed to go one better than their finish as runners-up in 2020.

However, the draw was not kind to Mauricio Pochettino's side, with a quarter-final against Bayern Munich potentially set to be followed by a meeting with Manchester City should they reach the final four.

Saturday's loss to Lille suggested all is not well at Parc des Princes, and though they will not have to worry about Robert Lewandowski against Bayern, the defending European champions still have plenty of weapons that can hurt their French opposition.

With the likes of Ricardo Pereira, James Justin, Ryan Bertrand and Jannik Vestergaard sidelined with injuries, Harvey Barnes and Jonny Evans would remain doubts after missing the City loss due to a hamstring problem and illess, respectively.

Smith may revert to a four-man backline here, meaning one of Caglar Soyuncu or Harry Souttar will start on the bench, handing Jamie Vardy a go in attack ahead of Kelechi Iheanacho and Patson Daka.

Dear Puma, your departure is a hard blow, but your legacy will live on in each of us. Rest in peace, friend, today it is your turn to gallop into eternity and it is our turn to honor your memory."

Are Kaizer Chiefs forwards coming to party? Ntseki fuels expectations on attackers but Barker is not convinced

Amakhosi recorded their second straight Premier Soccer League victory on Wednesday evening in their trip to Cape Town.

Kaizer Chiefs' 2-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC has sparked debate about whether their strikers have been sharpened.

In-form Pule Mmodi set Amakhosi on the path to victory before Christian Saile Basomboli rose from the bench to grab Chiefs' second goal.

For Mmodi, it was his third goal in two PSL matches and the major question is if the Glamour Boys have found a reliable scorer to end their attacking woes.

BackpagePixNtseki's work on Chiefs forwards

In recent seasons, Chiefs' attack has been a spot of worry for the club as strikers struggle to show up.

Ntseki emphasises on his work with the forwards and appears satisfied they are slowly rising to the occasion.

"I think the most important thing is the drills and the work we've put into our offensive players," Ntseki said post-match.

"They understand the demands, they understand the movements and they understand what technical execution we have to make in terms of getting goals.

"I think it was a very good decision for him [Pule Mmodi] to execute and be able to score that goal."

AdvertisementKaizer Chiefs – TwitterVibrant Saile

Ntseki also gave Christian Saile Basomboli the vote of confidence.

The DR Congo striker is yet to prove himself as a reliable and prolific striker but Ntseki describes him as a "vibrant player."

"As for Christian, he is a very vibrant type of player who is always looking to score, that is why when he scored he came to the bench to celebrate," Ntseki said.

"I think he's a goalscorer and any striker if he scores goals, that's what makes him feel good about himself."

BackpageCombination upfront coming into place

The Amakhosi coach has tried Saile, Mmodi, Ashley du Preez, Ranga Chivaviro as the most prominent forwards.

Although he faced initial criticism about how Saile and Chivaviro struggle to combine and make a terrifying attacking unit, Ntseki believes all is coming out well.

"I think that's what Ashley did last week and what Christian did today. That's what Mmodi did last week," Ntseki said.

"If you look at our goals it's a combination of our offensive play leading to a goal to be scored."

Stellenbosch coach Barker feels Amakhosi had no clue when it came to having a game plan.

"Obviously they are trying to create from the back and suck you in and play out where the pitch opens up for them.

Euro 2020 Power Rankings: Are England now the favourites?

With the quarter-final line-up now set, Goal breaks down which teams look most likely to contest the final on July 11

The Euro 2020 quarter-finals are on the way, but who will lift the trophy at Wembley Stadium on July 11?

Goal ranks all eight remaining contenders ahead of Friday and Saturday's games, from least likely to lift the trophy to tournament favourites…

Getty8Switzerland | Last time: 15th

Switzerland may have dumped tournament favourites France out during the last 16, but their path towards the final and potentially winning the whole competition still looks ridiculously daunting.

They must face free-scoring Spain in the quarter-finals without their inspirational captain Granit Xhaka, who is suspended, and even if they see off La Roja, they will then need to beat either Belgium or Italy to reach the final.

Nothing can be ruled out over the final week of Euro 2020 but, right now, Vladimir Petkovic's side are huge underdogs.

AdvertisementGetty7Ukraine | Last time: 13th

Arguably the weakest team left in the competition, Ukraine will have to pick themselves up and dust themselves off after what was a bruising, 120-minute-long victory over Sweden in the last 16.

They now face the prospect of having to break down England in the quarter-finals, and though a potential semi-final against either Denmark or Czech Republic looks easier on paper, they are undoubtedly the team with the least talent left on their side of the draw.

Getty6Czech Republic | Last time: 12th

There is no doubt that Czech Republic are a growing force in European football, and their victory over Netherlands in the last 16 confirmed what many have been saying about their increasing strength heading into the tournament.

A quarter-final meeting with Denmark would have delighted them heading into the tournament, and with Patrik Schick looking like Cristiano Ronaldo's main challenger for the Golden Boot, they will fancy their chances of progressing once more.

They might be unfancied ahead of their clash in Baku, but the Czechs cannot be ruled out.

Getty Images5Denmark | Last time: 9th

Whether you believe in the power of momentum or not, there is no question that this Denmark side is riding some sort of wave as they continue to lift themselves following the trauma of their opening game of the tournament.

The swatting aside of Wales was arguably the most complete performance of the last 16, and they now find themselves in a position where they are favourites to reach the semi-finals.

In terms of quality, they are lacking compared to the four teams above them in these rankings, but there is no doubting their character and togetherness, and that could still carry them all the way to the final.

Man Utd have been made to regret hiring Erik ten Hag over Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino

Had the "timing" been different, the Argentine could well have been in the home dugout for Wednesday's clash

"Soccer is 'timing'. These are the moments for it to coincide and for that marriage to happen. Sometimes it’s just a matter of time. I don’t believe in trains passing only once. I think that sometimes you have to have the necessary patience and you have to know how to wait. The 'timing' is handled by football."

That is how Mauricio Pochettino reflected on being overlooked for the Manchester United job in November 2022, after Erik ten Hag was hired ahead of him while he was heading towards the end of an ill-fated stint at Paris Saint-Germain. The former Tottenham boss had routinely been favourite for the role, but United went for the Dutchman after he wowed the board in the interview process.

Thirteen months on, Pochettino is preparing to take his Chelsea side to face Ten Hag's United; two teams mired in transition, it feels as though they both are slowly heading in opposite directions. The Argentine could so easily have been in the home dugout, though, and as Ten Hag continues to toil, there may well be some regret within the walls of Old Trafford that he isn't.

GettyTwo different approaches

It's become abundantly clear in recent weeks and months that these are two managers who take wholly different approaches to man-management, and that is beginning to have consequences for Ten Hag. If recent reports are to be believed, he has become the latest in a string of United managers to 'lose the dressing room'. That is likely in no small part down to his hard-line approach, admitting himself in 2022 that he can be "severe".

In fairness to Ten Hag, his playing staff have posed plenty of challenges, but while he navigated Cristiano Ronaldo's very public exit with aplomb, his handling of both Jadon Sancho and Antony's situations has drawn scrutiny; the former remains an outcast having failed to apologise for a social media outburst in September, which has caused friction among the rest of the squad, while the latter has been welcomed back into the fold despite being at the centre of an ongoing domestic abuse investigation.

Pochettino, meanwhile, is renowned as a consummate man-manager, becoming familiar with his players and taking a hands-on approach to give each individual what they need to succeed. When he does need to discipline his players, he keeps that interaction private. Noni Madueke felt his wrath earlier this season after being pictured on a night out despite being injured, but the fallout was kept to an absolute minimum.

Indeed, GOAL reported after Ten Hag's appointment that Pochettino was the players' preference to lead them forward, and they may be wishing they had got their way.

AdvertisementGettyTwo different personalities

Given the adversity he's faced in his relatively brief time in charge, it would be remarkable if Ten Hag hadn't ruffled some feathers. But despite the relative success of last season, where he delivered a trophy, something of a title challenge and a top-four finish, some quarters of the fanbase, certain players and those outside the club have not warmed to him.

His prickly personality has certainly been a contributing factor, as he struggles in the PR battle that is part and parcel of being Manchester United manager. Barbed press conferences in the face of challenging lines of questioning have been a regular theme of his tenure, and the decision to ban certain journalists ahead of the clash with Pochettino's Chelsea – a response to these latest dressing room leaks – will likely only serve to do more harm to his image.

The challenge for Pochettino has been to win over a fanbase that views him as hero of one their sworn enemies in Tottenham. It's by no means one he has fully overcome, but his warm demeanour and disarming personality off the pitch have gone some way to shifting perspectives, as well as the welcome bite he has shown on the touchline and in confrontations with officials, even with some very varied results on the field.

The United job might have pushed him to his limits, but it's hard to imagine Pochettino doing worse to endear himself to all concerned.

GettyMissed opportunities

The way things are going, the summer transfer window will be reflected on as a monumental failure for the Red Devils, with big-money acquisitions Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, earmarked by Ten Hag, all falling well short of expectation to date.

Things could have been wildly different with Pochettino at the helm, especially in the failed pursuit of Harry Kane. With the striker evidently open to finally leaving Tottenham, United dropped their interest as early as June having been deterred by Spurs' £100 million ($126m) valuation and spent a whopping £72m ($91m) on unproven Hojlund instead. Kane has, of course, since signed for Bayern Munich, where he is scoring goals at an unprecedented rate.

It was reported that Kane wanted to stay in England, and Pochettino's presence at Old Trafford could well have been enough to make the deal happen – either through the Argentine convincing his bosses to open their wallets or via Kane submitting the transfer request that never materialised in reality.

While his new signings have so far failed to deliver, the Dutchman perhaps took his eye off the ball in terms of outgoings, too. While Pochettino demonstrated his ruthlessness in helping to undertake a much-needed clear-out at Stamford Bridge, several relics of a failed era still remain at Old Trafford.

Getty ImagesOverlooked potential

Despite United's struggles of late, Ten Hag has been hesitant to turn to the club's famed academy for inspiration. Prodigious winger Alejandro Garnacho (19) has only recently nailed down a starting place, and no sooner had Kobbie Mainoo (18) produced a midfield masterclass against Everton than he was returned to the bench for the crucial clash with Galatasaray.

Both, though, have proven that they are good enough to be regular features in two positions where United are in dire need of quality. There is little doubt that, under Pochettino, they would be. The Argentine built his reputation at Tottenham on giving opportunities to young players, and he was richly rewarded by the likes of Kane, Dele Alli and Eric Dier.

The Argentine said at the time: "I’m not afraid to play them. If a player deserves to play, if they are 17, 18, 19 or 20 it’s the same for us, if they deserve to play and show character and maturity to be given the responsibility. But for that, you need to build the player."

Of course, there are different pressures at Old Trafford, but when the alternatives are underperforming senior players who have been given countless opportunities to prove themselves, there should be a pathway for their academy talents to seize the opportunity.

Man City: European Champions?

The ultimate Manchester United season preview: Ignore Ronaldo – if Ten Hag gets this right he'll be the new king of Old Trafford

Have United finally found the right manager to catch Pep & Klopp?

It is the latest Manchester United reboot – and forgive us if you think you’ve heard this one before. It can feel like Groundhog Day at Old Trafford as an ever-fading force desperately tries to restore its former glories.

Now it is the turn of Erik ten Hag to revive United’s fortunes – and the Dutchman faces familiar challenges.

He inherited an unwieldy and imbalanced squad.

His star player wants out.

And he’s struggling to bring in the targets he sees as vital to turning this ship around.

So what will be different this time? The truth is, no-one knows.

In 18 months to two-years’ time, it could be another man in the United hot-seat, charged with the responsibility of guiding them back to the summit of English football.

But in Ten Hag they have gone with a man they believe can challenge Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp. A manager who plays football the right way and is a proven winner with Ajax.

He will give them a defined way of playing to lift the crowds and bring the club into the modern era. Ultimately, they hope he is the man to bring the trophies back to Old Trafford.

It is a risk. He does not know English football. He is up against four titans of the game in Guardiola, Klopp, Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel.

Meanwhile, Arsenal continue to back Mikel Arteta with the money to restore their own fortunes.

United could have gone with the Premier League-proven Mauricio Pochettino – but were convinced Ten Hag was the man to end nine years of misery.

Only time will tell.

Getty ImagesSquad Goals

It is the eve of the start of United's season and they are still a long way from getting their summer business done.

That is a remarkable situation – but one that Ten Hag’s predecessors will know all too well.

United’s transfer strategy remains an issue, despite numerous reforms and a genuine confidence from the club’s hierarchy that they were months ahead of schedule back in June.

Regardless of what happens between now and the close of the window, they have jeopardised the start of a crucial campaign and left their manager short-handed.

Ten Hag wants Frenkie de Jong above all targets. He specifically wants the Netherlands international but the position of holding midfield is even more important, with the new manager believing a top-class addition in that area is fundamental to the football he wants to play.

If United miss out on De Jong now, it would be a major embarrassment – and also mean they have wasted crucial time trying to get the deal done.

If he does arrive – which they are still banking on – they can at least say they waited for the right man. Even still – it has taken too long.

Ten Hag also wants to strengthen in attack. Ajax are trying to price Antony out of a move but injury to Anthony Martial underlines just how light United are up front.

Cristiano Ronaldo also wants out, so the cutting edge is a pressing issue.

At least Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez have been added.

Elsewhere, Ten Hag’s plans to offload more than 10 players this summer is going slowly.

Even after the departures of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, Dean Henderson, Alex Telles and Andreas Pereira, there are still a host of names who are surplus to requirements.

AdvertisementGettyHopes

On the one hand, Ten Hag is in the luxurious position of knowing things surely can’t be worse than last season. On the other, the competition for top four is arguably fiercer than ever, with United far from certain of a return to the Champions League.

That has to be the minimum requirement – but for a club that hasn’t won a trophy in five years, some silverware would be very welcome.

Crucially, United fans want to see the team heading in the right direction.

That doesn’t just mean the odd trophy or two, but without the football to match – as in the cases of Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. And it doesn’t mean a dose of nostalgia and a few memorable nights – as in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United need to see real, tangible progress on the pitch – and they need to see the type of football that suggests they can genuinely challenge Manchester City and Liverpool in the future.

That is what Ten Hag was brought in to do.

If he can lead them back into the top four with a brand of modern, attacking football, he will meet expectations in his first season.

If he can add a trophy as well, he will have United fans believing again.

Getty ImagesFears

The primary fear, put simply, is that this will be yet another false dawn.

Ten Hag says the right things. He has a record for attractive, exciting football that wins trophies.

There have been clear signs of what he is trying to do in just a few weeks at the club. But much bigger names than him have been swallowed up by Old Trafford.

United have tried just about everything.

David Moyes was Premier League-proven – but proved a spectacular failure.

Van Gaal had won the lot and managed the very biggest clubs in Barcelona and Bayern Munich – but his brand of football was a major turn-off.

Mourinho was the guaranteed winner. He won – but still didn’t last.

And Solskjaer was a return to United’s roots. He lifted spirits – but won nothing.

There are no guarantees Ten Hag will fare any better.

It is another step into the unknown for a club that is running out of ideas.

It is impossible not to fear the worst – but there is every reason to be optimistic.

GettyThe Hero

It is a cliché – but Jadon Sancho looks like a new signing.

It was a bit of a false start for the winger in his first season, which saw him have to cope with the disruption of Solskjaer’s sacking and then the failed interim reign of Ralf Rangnick.

So it is little wonder he failed to produce the sort of show-stealing displays that were commonplace at Borussia Dortmund.

But he is the type of player to light up Old Trafford with his mazy runs, goals and assists.

Sancho was one of the most wanted talents in Europe when United landed him last year – and there have already been signs of him benefiting from a new manager in Ten Hag.

United fans are looking for a new hero – and he could be primed to take on that mantle.

If he does, he might just earn himself an England recall in time for the World Cup.

Saudi Arabia World Cup 2022 squad: Who's in and who's out?

Who got the nod from head coach Herve Renard as Saudi Arabia prepare for 2022 World Cup?

Saudi Arabia will be making their sixth appearance at the World Cup in Qatar.

They first made it to the finals of the tournament in 1994 and made an instant impact as they reached the round of 16 on their debut.

Can the Green Falcons do even better in Qatar?

Well, coach Herve Renard would definitely want to, but he will be well aware of the threat posed by other nations in their pool.

Saudi Arabia have been drawn in Group C along with Argentina, Mexico and Poland.

Not the easiest of groups, but Renard would hope that his troops can cause a couple of upsets and make it to the knockout stages.

Here are the 26 players who will make the trip to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Mohammed Al-Owais is the undisputed No.1 for Renard between the sticks. The 30-year-old played a crucial role in Saudi Arabia's World Cup qualification campaign and has started in every international fixture in 2022.

Mohammed Al Rubiae of Al-Ahli and Fawaz Al-Qarni are likely to be the second and third-choice keepers. Al-Rubaie, 25, has been impressive in the domestic league for Al-Ahli and is a solid option on the bench.

Salem Al-Dawsari must be one of the first names on the team sheet as he has been sublime for Saudi Arabia on the left wing.

Hattan Bahebri is another experienced candidate who is usually deployed as an attacking midfielder. The 30-year-old plies his trade with Al-Shabab and is a regular for them.

Fahad Al-Muwallad, meanwhile, was initially included in the team but was dropped as a precaution as he failed a doping test in February and the case is still going on. Instead, Nawaf al-Abed was called up in his place.

ATTACKERS

Firas Al-Buraikan should be the first choice to lead the lines. The Al-Fateh striker has been hitting the right chords at club level and will be eager to replicate his performances in the World Cup.

Saleh Al-Shehri was at his prolific best during the qualification stage as he scored seven goals in 13 appearances. He is expected to provide stiff competition to Al-Buraikan.

De Bruyne has remained out of action since mid-August after he was forced off in the 23rd minute of the club's Premier League season opener against Burnley. Now City boss Guardiola has provided an optimistic update on the Belgian's return date as he hinted that City fans should enjoy the festive period.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the club's Champions League fixture against RB Leipzig, Guardiola said: "I’d love to have him (De Bruyne) all season but he has had surgery and has to recover well. The end of December or [in the] new year will be a Happy New Year for everyone!"

The manager also provided updates on some of the other injury City stars including John Stones as he added: "We have training now but we’ll see this afternoon… I'm not optimistic about good news for some people to come back… John Stones is getting better… Not to play but maybe a few minutes for the next one."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The reigning Premier League champions have had several injury concerns in recent times. During their clash against Liverpool on Saturday, the 52-old-manager suggested that he could barely name a starting line-up as a number of players from his squad were suffering from a vomiting bug.
