Harry Kane, Mason Mount and the 10 players Man Utd are most likely to sign in the 2023 summer transfer window

Even after a strong debut campaign under Erik ten Hag, United have plenty of work to do this summer to become credible title contenders

Manchester United gave plenty of support to Erik ten Hag in the transfer market last summer, and after a fine first season, they must back him again to capitalise on all the progress that has been made. Despite finishing third in the Premier League and making it to the Carabao and FA Cup finals, weaknesses in the squad have been laid bare by some heavy beatings, particularly away from home.

United will be looking to sign a world-class striker, an attacking midfielder, a goalkeeper and another centre-back so they can truly compete with Manchester City next season and try to land a first league title in 11 years.

GOAL takes a look at the players most likely to head to Old Trafford this summer…

GettyMason Mount (Chelsea)

Mount could well be United's first signing of the summer after the Red Devils accelerated a move for the midfielder, who is heading into the final year of his contract with Chelsea.

He has had an injury-ravaged season but a fresh start at a now stable United could serve him well, and he would give Ten Hag's side an extra edge in midfield, easing the burden on Bruno Fernandes and giving the team more energy than Christian Eriksen is able to offer.

AdvertisementGettyHarry Kane (Tottenham)

Kane is the player United want to sign more than anyone else. There could not be a better guarantee of goals and assists than the man who has become Tottenham and England's record scorer and is on course to break Alan Shearer's Premier League scoring record.

The England captain would also raise standards in the dressing room and allow them to take the next step in their transformation under Ten Hag. Kane wants to leave Tottenham after a horrendous season and has done nothing to quash the speculation as he moves into the final year of his contract.

However, Daniel Levy resisted Kane's move to Manchester City in 2021 and the chairman will be the biggest obstacle to getting a deal over the line, demanding a fee in the region of £100 million despite the contract situation.

GettyNeymar (Paris Saint-Germain)

Neymar's popularity at PSG has sunk to an all-time low and he is searching for a new club. United are one of the few clubs that could afford the Brazilian, who remains the most expensive player in the world following his £191 million move from Barcelona in 2017.

PSG have offered Neymar to United and Ten Hag has not denied that the club are interested, remarking at a press conference last week: "When we have news we'll tell you."

Neymar's injury record and his attitude problems might well concern United fans, but when fit he is still one of the most thrilling and decisive players in the world. He has scored 118 goals and provided 77 assists in 173 matches for PSG, averaging more than a goal contribution per game.

GettyDeclan Rice (West Ham)

Rice is ready to leave West Ham after five excellent years of service and United have shown interest in him for a long time. They would have been even more determined after Rice produced a dominant performance in West Ham's victory over United last month.

They face a battle with Arsenal to get hold of the England midfielder and he will cost at least £80 million. But United could have one thing in their favour: Rice is best friends with Mount, and if the Chelsea midfielder completes a move to Old Trafford then there would be an extra incentive for the West Ham captain to follow him there.

De Gea, Martial and the Man Utd players who could leave on a free transfer

Goal looks at the players whose deals are due to end, which of them could leave and who might still be at Old Trafford come 2019-20

Since 1995, the Bosman ruling has revolutionised football transfers, giving players the opportunity to break free of clubs at the end of their contracts, and the pre-contract agreement which has since been brought into the game means that from January 1 players with expiring deals can sign with potential new employers six months ahead of a move.

This January, Manchester United find themselves in the kind of position many clubs have been left in since Jean-Marc Bosman successfully petitioned the courts, with as many as 11 of their players holding contracts which are due to expire at the end of the current season.

The one thing they do have going for them is that eight of the 11 involved have club-option extension clauses written into their deals, which allows the Old Trafford hierarchy the freedom to add 12 months to their contracts if they are unwilling to let them go.

Getty ImagesMatteo Darmian

The Italian full-back barely gets a look-in at Old Trafford these days and Jose Mourinho admitted in the summer that United were ready to sell if the right offer came in.

"Matteo wants to leave and I think when a player wants to leave, if the right offer arrives you have to try to be human and let the player follow his instinct, but not at any price," the manager said.

“And, until now, the offers we got for Matteo are not even close to being accepted."

The 28-year-old could well move in January if the right bid comes in having not made an appearance since the opening day of the season at a time when Mourinho was stretched due to post-World Cup holidays.

But if a winter move doesn't materialise, United are almost certain to trigger the one-year option on his contract to ensure he doesn't leave for free in the summer. They are still likely to help Darmian find a move though in order to get some return on their 2015 investment.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesDavid de Gea

Mourinho stunned the United fan base last week by claiming he was not confident that De Gea would sign a new deal with the club.

"I am not confident but I am not worried," he told in relation to the No.1 extending his contract. "I cannot find the word in English."

De Gea has played down speculation since then but notably failed to commit. "What matters is the team and all of us being focused on what we need to focus on, which is winning games, rather than contracts or any topics that can be a distraction," said the Spaniard.

With De Gea's contract due to expire in 2019, United do hold a one-year option. However, if there is no sign of a willingness on the player's part to sign a new deal then the club could be backed into a corner as this season draws to a close.

Not yet 28 and considered by many to be the best goalkeeper in the world, De Gea is a hugely valuable asset and the prospect of him running his contract down and leaving on a free is one United will not be keen to risk. They could even consider a sale in the summer to get a fee if they are convinced the former Atletico Madrid man has his heart set on leaving.

Getty ImagesAnder Herrera

The Spanish midfielder has seen his game-time reduced by a great degree over the last 18 months to the point where his only Premier League start so far this season came as an emergency centre-back in the 3-0 loss to Tottenham.

Having already seen the club pick up his one-year option last season, Herrera's commitment to the club could well end this summer although Jose Mourinho is keen for him and Juan Mata to stay at Old Trafford.

"Juan and Ander, even if they are not playing a lot and not starting matches, by the personality point of view and character point of view, by what they represent in the modern society and in football, they are almost unique pieces that I also don't want to lose," said the manager when asked whether he wants to keep the Spanish pair.

His character has won him countless fans since he arrived at United in 2014, but the 29-year-old may consider making a move to gain increased game time elsewhere if he believes his next contract to be his last during his peak playing years.

Getty ImagesPhil Jones

Like most United contracts, Phil Jones' deal includes a club option to tie him down to Old Trafford until the summer of 2020 and the Red Devils are highly likely to activate the extra year if only to command a fee for the centre-back next summer.

With competition for places at the heart of defence being fierce and Jose Mourinho having publicly discussed the need for more quality in his position, Jones has slipped down the pecking order and is likely to fall further down the ranks as United go forward.

As a result, the club could listen to offers in the summer once they have triggered their option, giving them the opportunity to cash in on the England defender before they are left facing the prospect of gaining no fee for him in 2020.

Kieswetter puts career fears behind him

Craig Kieswetter marked his return to the Somerset side after a potentially career-threatening eye injury with a fluent half-century as Middlesex’s survival hopes took a hit

George Dobell at Taunton15-Sep-2014
ScorecardNick Compton was bowled by Tim Murtagh but Middlesex couldn’t capitalise•Getty ImagesIt might be pushing the truth a little to claim that Craig Kieswetter was blind but now can see, but the Somerset keeper has admitted he feared his career might be over after sustaining a serious eye injury a little over two months ago.Kieswetter sustained a broken nose and fractured orbital socket after he was struck by a short ball from David Willey on July 12. For three weeks it was unclear whether he would regain the level of sight required to pursue a career in cricket. But now, with the double-vision having cleared, Kieswetter regards the whole experience as positive and claims it gave him not only a fuller appreciation of his position as a professional sportsman, but also of the affection in which players are held at a friendly, well-supported club like Somerset.”Once the extent of the injury became clear, I was panicking,” Kieswetter said. “There was a week before the surgery and two weeks after that I was worried that I might not play again.”For the first 90 minutes I was full of adrenalin. But then, as I was passed from surgeon to surgeon and it became clear there was an issue with my optical floor, I was panicking. But my surgeon did a fantastic job and I have been overwhelmed and humbled by the support I have received.”I had double vision in one eye for a couple of weeks after surgery and, even now, it is not 100% when I look directly up. It takes time to get over the injury and the trauma.”Sometimes as players, we can be a bit aloof towards supporters. But the care I had showed what a special club this is to be around. It is a special thing for a player to feel that sense of belonging.”I might be walking down the street or out for dinner and people I didn’t know would come up and ask how I was. Even the reception when I walked out to bat today gave me goose-bumps. It’s important I return the favour. I was delighted to give something back today.”Kieswetter “gave something back” by providing the most fluent batting of a day which ended with Somerset having edged Middlesex a little closer to relegation. Contributing 70 at little less than a run-a-ball, he made light of an unusually green wicket and, when greeted with the inevitable short ball near the start of his innings by Toby Roland-Jones, responded by pulling it for six. No matter that there was something of the top-edge in the stroke, he played it with conviction and was soon timing the ball sweetly through the covers. With Tom Abell and James Hildreth also contributing patient half-centuries, Middlesex, were restricted to one bowling bonus point despite inserting Somerset in overcast conditions.Middlesex have another 14 overs on the second day in order to claim more bonus points – they require a maximum of 13 more points from their final two games to ensure Division One survival – but are now in an uncomfortable position ahead of their final game against the other relegation candidates, Lancashire, next week. After winning four of their first six matches, Middlesex have failed to win any of their last eight, with the last victory coming on May 21.They were a little unfortunate here, though. Ball beat bat regularly in the first session and, with 17 of the first 34 overs maidens, batting became a pretty desperate fight for survival.”We didn’t get out rewards today,” Richard Johnson, the Middlesex bowling coach, said. “We reckon they must have played and missed 50 or 60 times, but it was just one of those days.”But Middlesex also squandered at least two chances. Abell was reprieved on 4, when Eoin Morgan put down a sharp chance at third slip, and 28 – Dawid Malan, at second slip, the guilty man on this occasion. A couple of other chances dropped just short of the cordon on a surface which, despite the grass covering, remains slow and dry. There were moments when it appeared Middlesex might capitalise. Certainly after Marcus Trescothick guided one to gully and Nick Compton was bowled by one that nipped back, and then when Abell was run-out backing-up off Neil Dexter’s boot, it seemed Somerset might subside. But each time they found a player to dig them out of trouble, first Abell, with a 123-ball half-century, and then Hildreth, with a 130-ball half-century.Only Kieswetter looked comfortable, though. After returning to the nets a couple of weeks ago with batting coach, David Houghton, Kiesweeter regained his confidence against tennis balls and has gradually built up the pace and intensity of net sessions. He still retains hopes of winning a late call to the England World Cup squad, but aims to play in the Big Bash if that proves beyond him.”I wouldn’t be playing if I didn’t think I could still play at that level,” he said. “And my personality is such that I always like I should be playing for England. But having had this time to reflect on everything – the injury, being dropped by England and everything else – I realise I am one of those lucky people who earns a living doing something they truly love. It’s the game I fell in love with as a kid.”A lot of players forget that perspective check. I’m not saying I’m perfect, but I have seen the bigger picture. Hopefully the whole experience has made me mature. I hope I’ve improved as a person and as a cricketer.”Another man coming to terms with trauma and disappointment – albeit of a very different characteristic – is Ashley Giles. Giles admits he lost his appetite for coaching for a while after missing out to Peter Moores in the race to be appointed England coach, but is now recovering his enthusiasm for the job.He is expected to visit Taunton at some stage this week with a view to talking to the club about the role of director of cricket. It is worth noting, though, that it took Giles five years to transform Warwickshire from rabble to Championship winners. Whether Somerset, a club impatient for success after years of near-misses, will provide such time remains to be seen.

ICC to fast-track suspect actions during World Cup

The ICC will endevour to submit the assessment report within seven days if a bowler’s action is called suspect during the World Cup

Nagraj Gollapudi21-Jan-2015Suspect actions during the World Cup will be evaluated within seven days in a fast-track commitment drawn up by the ICC. The evaluation process aims to limit the period to a minimum, ensuring that bowling actions are judged with alacrity to reduce disruption of the tournament. The Brisbane accreditation centre was opened only three months ago with the World Cup much in mind, offering the chance to either clear or suspend bowlers within six days. Previously, tests have taken up to three weeks after the bowler has been reported, with the chance of another fortnight’s delay before a written report is received. The ICC’s regulation for reporting bowlers with suspect actions now states, said an ICC spokesman, that: “Independent analysis shall be carried out and the independent assessment furnished on an expedited basis. In this respect, every reasonable effort shall be made for the independent analysis to be carried out and the independent assessment furnished within a period of seven days from the date of receipt of the match officials’ report.”The faster evaluation is part of ICC’s effort to eradicate suspect bowling actions and is bound to defeat any strategy by a team thinking of saving a bowler with a suspect action for later stages of the World Cup.That would have worked under the Standard Regulations applicable to non-ICC Events where the bowler can continue to bowl in international cricket as long as he is tested within three weeks of being reported. Although the relevant rule (2.1.5) states that an independent analysis would be carried out “as soon as reasonably possible”, a period of 21 days has been adopted as acceptable, bearing in mind logistical and operational issues. The shift in policy was signalled by Dave Richardson, the ICC chief executive, on Tuesday when he said: “The ICC-accredited testing centre in Brisbane is on stand-by so that if somebody is reported early on in the tournament, he can go straight off to Brisbane, get tested within five or six days, and we can have the report so that he can either continue bowling if he’s found to be legal, or if he’s illegal, then he will be suspended.”The ICC, Richardson stressed, was unrelenting on suspect actions, an issue that had been dormant for a long time but having gained momentum with high-profile bowlers being reported both in international cricket as well as domestic cricket.Pakistan offspinners Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez were previously reported in international cricket while West Indies spinner Sunil Narine was disqualified from bowling in the Champions League T20 final last year having been reported in two successive matches.Ajmal has expressed confidence that unofficial tests at Edgbaston have indicated that his deliveries are within legal limits again.

Resurgent Raheem Sterling is being screwed out of an England Euro 2024 place by Gareth Southgate's inconsistent selection policy

The Three Lions boss is making a rod for his own back with a contradictory selection policy that is shafting on-form players

England have already qualified for Euro 2024. All the Three Lions need to do in facile fixtures against Malta and North Macedonia is ensure that they will be one of the top seeds in next month's finals draw in Germany.

Fair to say, then, that this could have been a relatively boring international break for England fans – had Gareth Southgate not once again inexplicably overlooked Raheem Sterling, with Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Jarrod Bowen the chosen widemen.

The absence of the Chelsea winger from a fifth consecutive squad hasn't just caused controversy; it's provoked all sorts of speculation surrounding Sterling and Southgate.

Getty'Something has definitely happened'

Both Alan Shearer and Michah Richards are convinced that "something has definitely happened" behind the scenes that we don't yet know about, while Rio Ferdinand has even issued a public plea to "free Raheem Sterling!"

"I don't know what he's done, whose nose he's put out of joint," the former Manchester United defender said on the podcast. "Was it him coming back from the tournament or something like that?"

Ferdinand was obviously alluding to the fact that Sterling briefly returned to England during last year's World Cup because of a burglary at his family home – and that kind of conjecture does a great disservice to Southgate, who was very supporting of the attacker at the time. However, while such talk is unhelpful, and potentially harmful, it's also inevitable in the circumstances, given Southgate's Sterling snub makes zero sense.

AdvertisementGettyOut of favour

There's absolutely no denying that Sterling made a somewhat subdued start to his Chelsea career, after his high-profile move from Manchester City in the summer of 2022, but he still travelled to Qatar as a trusted member of Southgate's line-up, only to lose his starting spot by the time England were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Injury ruled him out of the start of the start of the qualification campaign for the Euros, in March, but it was nonetheless a surprise to see him overlooked for the June clashes with Malta and North Macedonia.

Sterling may have endured a difficult debut season at Stamford Bridge, but Southgate has become renowned for picking players performing poorly at club level simply because they have served him well in the past.

GettyOne rule for one…

Harry Maguire continued to be called up even while spending most of his time on the bench at Old Trafford, Jordan Henderson is still in the squad even though he's now struggling in Saudi Arabia, while it's a complete farce that Kalvin Phillips has held onto his place given he's barely got a run-out for Manchester City in the past two years.

Phillips undeniably played a key role in England's run to the final of Euro 2020 – but why hasn't Sterling benefited from the same level of loyalty given he was arguably his country's best player at the tournament?

GettyDon't change a winning team?

Southgate has argued that the "landscape" has changed; that the competition for places, particularly in attack, is now fiercer than ever before. However, when asked to explain why Sterling had been omitted from the England squad for the October internationals, he pointed out that the likes of Ollie Watkins and Jarrod Bowen were "both in a hot streak of form". "That's the thinking," the manager explained.

But this time around, he effectively admitted that he was reluctant to change a winning team. "I can only repeat what I've said in the last few squad selection meetings," he said. "The team is playing really well. It's as simple as that, really.

"[Raheem] wasn't available in March or June and the team started on a good run. We won in Italy for the first time in 60 years, while the two performances in June were excellent, so we stuck with that group."

De Bruyne has remained out of action since mid-August after he was forced off in the 23rd minute of the club's Premier League season opener against Burnley. Now City boss Guardiola has provided an optimistic update on the Belgian's return date as he hinted that City fans should enjoy the festive period.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT PEP GUARDIOLA SAID

Speaking to reporters ahead of the club's Champions League fixture against RB Leipzig, Guardiola said: "I’d love to have him (De Bruyne) all season but he has had surgery and has to recover well. The end of December or [in the] new year will be a Happy New Year for everyone!"

The manager also provided updates on some of the other injury City stars including John Stones as he added: "We have training now but we’ll see this afternoon… I'm not optimistic about good news for some people to come back… John Stones is getting better… Not to play but maybe a few minutes for the next one."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The reigning Premier League champions have had several injury concerns in recent times. During their clash against Liverpool on Saturday, the 52-old-manager suggested that he could barely name a starting line-up as a number of players from his squad were suffering from a vomiting bug.

It's the same case with Simon Kjaer, Rade Krunic and Brahim Diaz, although Kjaer may face competition from youngster Malick Thiaw to continue alongside Fikayo Tomori at centre-back.

Surrey in a hurry as Harinath anchors free-flowing innings

Spring finally sprung for the punters in South London, as a crowd of some 2000 watched Surrey make hay at the Kia Oval

Though it still remains a good toss to have won – and a toss was what we did indeed have, after Durham declined the automatic chance to bowl first – Surrey’s total looks set to fall someway short of formidable.Arun Harinath epitomised the combination of hard yards and soft focus that marred his team’s performance. His 96 from 188 balls was a dogged, diligent anchor role that should, by rights, have resulted in his second century in three Championship matches, following his match-salvaging effort at Trent Bridge earlier this month.Instead, having played a willing second fiddle to a free-flowing Davies, whose 55-ball half-century was the most fluent innings of the day, Harinath contrived to give away his innings only moments after Davies himself had departed for 87 to a fine stretching catch from Keaton Jennings in the gully.Seeking a statement shot where previously he had been content to grind his runs, Harinath climbed into a pull and top-edged to mid-on to give Rushworth his second wicket in as many overs. “It was just a poor shot, a misjudgement of length,” he admitted at the close. “I thought it was shorter than it was, but Durham have a disciplined attack and that can happen, unfortunately.”Nevertheless, Harinath had played his part in setting the scene for Surrey, not least in seeing off a typically testing new-ball spell from Rushworth and Onions, and a fiery burst from Stokes that resulted in the first breakthrough of the day when Rory Burns was bowled for 15 by a beauty from round the wicket that pitched on the left-hander’s off stump and plucked it out too – shades of Flintoff to Gilchrist, as if any more comparisons were needed. He hung around, too, after the biggest shock of the day’s play – the insubstantial departure of Kumar Sangakkara, who got off the mark with a typically dreamy cover-drive only to be bowled off the inside edge for 26 by Brydon Carse, a South African-born 20-year-old with designs on an England future, and whose fourth first-class wicket was unquestionably his finest yet.”The first aim tomorrow is 400 for maximum batting points, and another partnership to see how far ahead we can get in the game,” said Harinath at the close. “If some of us, including myself, hadn’t got ourselves out we could have put a few more nails in the coffin, but we’ll have to turn up tomorrow and keep fighting as we have done for the last 12 months or so.”The punters didn’t seem to mind – some of the slightly lax departures seemed a price worth paying for the entertainment on offer, particularly during the alliance of recent England internationals, Ansari and Roy. One Twitter pundit described their century stand as “deeply erotic”, although it ended in a flaccid finish for both – Roy chipping a leading edge to mid-on for 64 as Onions appeared to stop one in the pitch, before Ansari flapped a back-cut off Stokes to the keeper Michael Richardson for 41 – another confident display in his successful return to the fray following his horrible hand injury last season.Richardson was in action again as Tom Curran came and went for a duck, nibbling outside off to give Carse his second scalp of the day, but with Ben Foakes and Gareth Batty still in situ at the close, Surrey retain the upper hand in a contest that seemed to bloom very rapidly in the sun.
