Aston Villa: Boubacar Kamara scouted

Aston Villa have been scouting Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara for ‘the past few weeks’, according to But! Football Club (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder is also capable of operating as a centre-back. His contract expires on 30 June, which means he is currently free to negotiate pre-contract terms with clubs outside of France.

Villa signed Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho in January but were unable to land a defensive midfielder as they’d hoped, having refused to meet the asking price for either Yves Bissouma or Rodrigo Bentancur.

The Athletic’s Gregg Evans has said that the club are now expected to address that perceived weakness in the summer.

The latest

The report from But! Football Club (via Sport Witness) stated that recruitment staff from Aston Villa have been watching Kamara during the month of February.

The expectation is very much that the player will ‘pack his bags’ and leave Jorge Sampaoli’s side come the end of the season.

The verdict

Could Kamara be the answer for Villa in the middle of the park?

The Daily Mirror’s David Anderson has talked up his potential to GiveMeSport, hailing him as ‘one of the next big things’.

Indeed, figures from FBRef illustrate that the 22-year-old is a well-rounded number 6 in the same mould as Liverpool’s Fabinho. He ranks in the 70th percentile or better (relative to positional peers) for pass completion, progressive passes and interceptions.

One potential problem for Villa, though, is that Manchester United are also said to be tracking the £22.5m-rated Frenchman, and they will hope to use the significant carrot of potential Champions League football to persuade him to choose Old Trafford over Villa Park.

Wolves: Dean Jones confused by Raul Jimenez situation

Journalist Dean Jones has been left confused with Bruno Lage’s decision to drop star striker Raul Jimenez, speaking in the build-up to Thursday’s clash against Watford.

The Lowdown: Jimenez’s omission

The Mexico international has been the talisman since arriving at the Molineux Stadium on loan in 2018, before joining the club in a permanent deal worth £30 million a year later.

The 30-year-old has netted an impressive 53 goals in 137 appearances, 39 of which have come in the Premier League.

However, Jimenez seemingly appears out of favour under Bruno Lage, who dropped the striker to the bench for their recent fixture against West Ham, bringing him on for the final nine minutes of action.

More surprisingly, he was dropped once again in Wolves following league clash against Crystal Palace. Again, he was brought on as a substitute, featuring for 27 minutes.

The Latest: Jones’ claim…

Jones has weighed in on the situation, having been left confused with Lage’s decision to drop his star man, who has scored five Premier League goals this season.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, he claimed:

“Even if Jimenez isn’t scoring goals, you have him in the team as an outlet if nothing else. You can’t play Podence through the middle.

“As a defender or even midfielder sometimes you want an out ball and a guy you can stick the ball up to hold the ball up, bring others into player and the next phase begins from there.

“Jimenez is one of the best at that, so it’s very strange [he has been dropped].”

The Verdict: Likely to start again soon?

Whilst Jimenez’s tally this season has not compared to either of his previous two double-figured seasons in the Premier League, the Mexican offers far more to the team than just goals.

The striker has added defensive attributes to his game to add to Wolves’ style of play. According to FB Ref, over the course of the past year, Jimenez ranked in the 81st percentile for tackles, the 89th percentile for interceptions and the 85th percentile for blocks made for players in Europe’s top five leagues.

With Wolves failing to score in the previous two games that the 30-year-old didn’t start, it may be likely to see Jimenez lining up for his side’s upcoming fixture against Watford, as the Wanderers continue their push for European football.

Leeds: Orta dealt Gomez transfer blow

Leeds United have been dealt a huge blow in their bid to bring Sergio Gomez to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Gazetta dello Sport (via MOT Leeds News), who claimed that the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Inter Milan have all joined the race for the Anderlecht left-back.

This report comes shortly after an earlier story by TEAMtalk which claimed that Victor Orta had identified the 21-year-old as a target for Leeds this summer, with the sporting director believed to be looking at bringing competition in for Junior Firpo on the left-hand side of Jesse Marsch’s backline.

Orta will be fuming

Considering just how much potential Gomez seems to possess, the news that three massive clubs in Manchester United, Chelsea and Inter have also taken an interest in the defender is sure to have left Orta fuming.

Indeed, over his 32 Jupiler Pro League appearances this season, the £8.1m-rated full-back has been in electric form, scoring five goals, registering 10 assists and creating 13 big chances for his team-mates, also making 1.8 key passes and taking 1.3 shots per game.

The £9k-per-week Spain under-21 international has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, helping Anderlecht to keep six clean sheets, also making 1.4 interceptions, 1.5 tackles and one clearance and winning 3.3 duels (at a success rate of 54%) per match.

These returns have seen the player who was once regarded as a potential successor to Andres Iniesta at Barcelona average an astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.42, ranking him as the fifth-best player in the Belgian top flight.

As such, it is clear for all to see that Gomez – who football talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed both a “superb” talent and a “Guardiola-esque kind of full-back” – would make an exceptional addition to Leeds’ current defensive options.

However, with a number of Europe’s elite clubs now reported to also be tracking the 21-year-old, a deal for Gomez looks as if it will be incredibly difficult for Orta to pull off this summer.

Fernandes repeat: Man Utd enter race for “special” £87m Semenyo alternative

It’s been another rollercoaster of a year for Manchester United, having flattered to deceive under Ruben Amorim’s management.

In the annual Premier League standings, the Red Devils are 13th, with 12 wins and 46 points across 36 matches. It hasn’t been good enough, but there’s no doubt that we have seen signs of progress over the past month or two.

Bruno Fernandes, as ever, has been the club’s shining light, but it’s disappointing to see that his 2025 has been curtailed early, sustaining a rare injury during the recent 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa.

Might this have altered United’s transfer plans? A deal for Manchester City-bound Antoine Semenyo has been in the works, but it wouldn’t be outrageous to suggest that the middle of the park is the priority position for INEOS as we head into the January market.

Man United's January transfer plans

Fernandes’ hamstring injury will have shifted Man United’s winter transfer strategy. Granted, the 30-year-old skipper isn’t expected to be sidelined for an extended period, but it’s unlikely we will see him again until the new year.

Perhaps this is the opportunity that Kobbie Mainoo has long been waiting for, though the 20-year-old talent has suffered a calf injury in training and may miss the next few weeks himself. Just his luck.

According to talkSPORT, United technical director Jason Wilcox has already turned toward an alternative to Semenyo, with a move for RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande in the pipeline.

Diomande, 19, has turned out to be quite the rising star, having enjoyed a prolific start to life in Germany. His talent is undeniable, and his employers have transfer-listed him at a whopping £87m.

He’s arguably got an even higher ceiling than Semenyo, and given the circumstances, he might prove to be Amorim’s own Fernandes signing at the Theatre of Dreams.

Why Yan Diomande would be perfect for Man Utd

Diomande is a two-sided winger who has established himself as one of the most clinical teenagers in Europe this season. He joined RB Leipzig from Leganes in Spain this summer, and last year, he only featured ten times in La Liga, scoring twice.

With seven goals and four assists already this term, the “special, special footballer”, as he has been called by journalist Antonio Mango, has the potential to become a superstar suggest he could become United’s new version of Fernandes, talismanic.

This argument is strengthened by the fact that he would arrive in January, as the Portuguese did when moving from Sporting Lisbon for an initial £47m fee in 2020.

Diomande is dangerous and direct. He is not stylistically similar to Fernandes, but his prolificness and ability to offer something distinctive does suggest that he could enjoy a similar impact. This is, after all, one of the most exciting attacking talents in the world.

Moreover, he ranks among the top 6% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 3% for progressive carries, the top 1% for successful take-ons and the top 12 for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

There’s no question that Diomande has superstar potential, and given United’s vested interest in Semenyo over the past several weeks, it’s clear that he fits the mould that has been set by Amorim’s long-term plan.

The Ivory Coast international has quickly established himself as an elite talent, and while he would cost a pretty penny to bring over to Old Trafford in 2026, there’s no question that Man United would receive bang for their buck.

Man United approve Wan-Bissaka exit

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has now personally green-lit a ‘high profile’ exit from Old Trafford as news emerges on defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Lowdown: Red Devils overhaul?

Rangnick, despite all the noise surrounding his future with managers tipped to replace him at the end of 2021/2022, has still had a say when it comes to incomings and outgoings.

Indeed, after shipping out Anthony Martial to Sevilla in January, reports suggested that the German also wanted to offload two other Red Devils stars in Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani for spoiling the mood inside Old Trafford.

Now, sharing an exit update, TEAMtalk have shared news on another player Rangnick wants to cut loose.

The Latest: Rangnick green-lights Wan-Bissaka exit…

According to their sources, United’s right-back is now ‘to be axed’ by the former RB Leipzig boss with Wan-Bissaka now set to be one of the ‘high-profile casualties’ of the summer.

TEAMtalk go on to state that while Rangnick isn’t expected to remain as coach beyond this season, he will take up his ‘advisory role’ with the United hierarchy.

The Verdict: Right call?

Wan-Bissaka has come under scrutiny for his performances at times this season, even despite averaging the joint-fourth most tackles per 90 and second-most interceptions out of United’s squad in the league (WhoScored).

Clearly there is a player with ability though going by the 24-year-old’s plaudits, with Crystal Palace defender Patrick Van Aanholt having waxed lyrical over his former Selhurst Park teammate.

Indeed, the Dutchman called Wan-Bissaka an ‘unbelievable’ player and ‘better than Trent [Alexander-Arnold]’ at one stage – potentially indicating that he could still have something to offer in a better run of form.

Alas, with Rangnick’s decision apparently made, it will be interesting to see where Wan-Bissaka could depart to in a few months time.

Crystal Palace eye swoop for John Swift

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieria should swoop for EFL star John Swift who has been the top scorer for relegation battling Reading having tallied 24 goal contributions this season.

The Eagles have been linked with a move according to Football League World who suggest that they may rival West Ham for his signature.

The 26-year old is a former Chelsea youth product having rose through the Cobham academy which has been deemed one of the best in world football.

Although he never made it through to the first team at Stamford Bridge a decent loan spell at Brentford scoring seven goals for them in the Championship.

He was described as “super-talented” by his former manager Veljko Paunovic last summer and his performances have proved that.

As a result he joined The Royals on a free transfer and has since been pivotal in their battle for survival, but with his contract expiring in the summer it could be the perfect time for the Eagles to land him.

Link up with Olise

Palace have surprised people this season by taking points off Arsenal and beating both Tottenham Hotspur and reigning champions Manchester City.

Moving to Selhurst Park would not only give Swift the chance to finally experience playing in the Premier League, it would also see him link up with former Reading teammate Michael Olise.

Olise, like Swift, rose through the ranks at Chelsea before eventually ending up at Reading via Man City. Last season he shone and at just 19-years of age scored seven and assisted 12.

This led to him being named the EFL Young Player of the Season and he was also included in the Championship team of the season and the PFA Championship team of the year.

The last time the pair played together was on the final day of last season where they were both rated two of the best players on the day for Reading by the Chronicle.

It would be a no brainer for Vieira to make a move for Swift especially seeing as he’s available on a free transfer.

He would likely be competing for a spot in the team with Cheikhou Kouyaté too.

The Senegalese midfielder has has an amazing year with his country winning the Africa Cup of Nations and securing World Cup qualification he has also played a big part in Palaces’ success.

The 32-year old ranks in the 90th percentile in a number of defensive categories when comparing him to other Premier League midfielders this season, but his attacking stats aren’t great having only tallied one goal contribution to his name all season. That differs considerably from Swift who has 34 goals for the Royals.

It’s here where Swift could offer a lot more and link up with the front three which includes a player he know extremely well in Olise.

Chelsea handed quadruple injury boost

Liverpool are set to feature in their first League Cup final since 2016 when they take on Chelsea at Wembley this afternoon, looking to win their first domestic cup in ten years, having last won the trophy in 2012.

Manager Jurgen Klopp will be looking to win the fifth major honour of his tenure with the Merseyside outfit, having already won the Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

However, it will certainly be a tall task against one of the Premier League’s best sides, who have also received some major injury news ahead of the final.

What’s the latest?

The Blues had concerns regarding the availability of four players ahead of the Wembley showdown, however, all of which have been deemed fit with long-term absentee Ben Chilwell the only player unavailable for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Reece James, Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech and Mateo Kovacic had previously been doubts for the game. However, James returned to training this week after two months out whilst Mount was on the bench for the 2-0 Champions League win over Lille on Tuesday.

Both Ziyech and Kovacic hobbled off the pitch against the French outfit, but have been passed fit.

On the availability of the duo, Tuchel said on Friday: “We had training today with everyone out on the pitch except for Ben Chilwell which is brilliant news and this is pretty much it. Both okay, since today.

“They were not only on the pitch with separate programmes, everybody joined team training from the first to the last minute. We have no reactions at the moment but positive reactions.

“I hope it stays like this, we have another training tomorrow and everybody is available for Sunday.”

Klopp will be gutted

Marginal gains are huge when it comes to winning a cup final and facing a Chelsea side with a handful of injuries to key players would’ve certainly been an advantage for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

He himself could have striker Diogo Jota available with the Portuguese battling to prove his fitness in time but fellow centre-forward Roberto Firmino has been ruled out with a muscle issue.

“Bobby we have to see in the next two days. He is pushing himself really hard but he will not be available for the final, to reach the squad,” assistant manager Pep Lijnders revealed on Friday afternoon.

“We hope he will be back really soon because you all see and know and feel how important he is for our way of playing, so I am happy that he is pushing himself. Hopefully he is soon back.

“Jota, so far no reaction on the things he did, so the straight-line running, the changes of direction and the ball work he did, so that’s a good sign. He isn’t ruled out but still it will be a challenge.”

However, to see some of their opponents’ key players come back into contention will no doubt leave him feeling a little gutted.

Reece James seems unlikely to start but between Ziyech, Mount and Kovacic, the trio have a combined 92 appearances thus far across all competitions for the West London side, proving to be important fixtures in the team.

The former is in particularly strong form too, scoring in his last three Premier League appearances against Brighton, Tottenham and Crystal Palace whilst also registering an assist on Tuesday against Lille.

As a result, he could prove a menacing prospect for the Liverpool defence, one they’d much rather have not had on such a big stage.

The showpiece fixture is set to be an incredibly close contest as second and third in the Premier League go head to head to win a trophy they haven’t won for ten and seven years respectively.

Meanwhile, this Liverpool star has seen his value soar…

This is a necessary learning curve for Newcastle

Newcastle’s loss away to Fulham on Monday night was a far cry from the performances we were used to seeing last year. And it’s not that Newcastle were particularly bad, it’s just that something wasn’t the same.

Maybe there is a mood at the club from the very top that last year’s achievement of finishing in the Europa League places was good enough. Maybe that feeling of happy-with-what-you’ve-got is now washing over the players. Or maybe it’s just that dreaded but almost inevitable second season syndrome.

That eight-year contract for Alan Pardew might not be looking like such a great idea now, but only really from Mike Ashley’s point of view. England needs to buck the trend of switching managers when the going gets tough—and Newcastle’s situation isn’t exactly horrific.

[post_link url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/newcastle-united/the-root-of-all-newcastles-problems,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/newcastle-united/premier-league-duo-on-alert-as-newcastle-look-to-cash-in,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/newcastle-united/alan-pardew-slams-sloppy-performance” target=”_blank” type=”tower”]

Newcastle are a big club and need stability in the form of the manager to help them continue building and to establish themselves as a Europe League team. Then only can they take the next step up the ladder towards Champions League football.

But this season is giving a good indication that perhaps not everyone at the club is on the same page. Alan Pardew clearly wanted greater funds in the summer to strengthen an already good side. This club have done the hard part, first coming up from the Championship and then knocking everyone off their seats with a whole league campaign’s worth of good and consistent results. Last summer was the time to dig in.

And it’s strange, because Newcastle haven’t lost any of their key players since finishing fifth last season. Even when talk became heated about players like Demba Ba, Cheick Tiote and Yohan Cabaye leaving, each of them—with maybe an exception to Ba—remained committed to the club.

Ashley, the businessman first and foremost, needs to look at the current situation and think when he has ever had life at Newcastle so good. If money if the driving point then allow the manager who you’ve entrusted with a relatively incongruous contract to strengthen this side.

Highlights of last season like the impressive win at Chelsea shouldn’t have to be from one fantastic yet soon to be forgotten season. Impressive buys like Cabaye and Papiss Cisse—ignoring his recent form—don’t have to be resigned to a one-off purple patch for the club under Pardew.

Everyone talks about second season syndrome, and Newcastle are one of the many examples of that throughout Europe. But it isn’t inevitable and it can be avoided. It can be avoided by not making Vurnon Anita your only major signing of the summer. It can be avoided by using Europa League qualification as a starting point rather than the height of your ambitions.

And I’m not suggesting that Mike Ashley doesn’t want his team to be in Europe’s elite competition in the future, but the lack of strengthening where needed suggests otherwise.

If Newcastle do finish well outside of a European place come May, you’ve got to hope that there won’t be a severe backlash on the manager. The exciting showing of last season has bought Pardew plenty of time to continue taking the club forward, but he needs absolute financial backing from the owner to continue to do so.

If Demba Ba leaves within the next six months, move on and acquire a striker of equal or better quality—and there are certainly enough good strikers on the continent who can replicate Ba’s production in front of goal.

But a change of tack is needed. The result could be of greater financial loss to Ashley if he doesn’t opt to move with a more forceful and positive attitude in the transfer market.

Talk of relegation wouldn’t be fitting of this team: there are far worse teams in the Premier League with greater problems. But this season may have to be seen as nothing more than an important learning curve for a club that desire and who are good enough for much more.

Leeds United must axe Struijk vs Wolves

Leeds United will be hoping to gain some momentum in the Premier League tonight as they take on Wolves at Molineux.

Jesse Marsch’s side finally got their late-season rescue act underway with a much-needed last-gasp victory over Norwich last time out, but tonight they face a Wolves team who are battling for European qualification next season.

The Whites boss will have some tough calls to make, but one ruthless decision he must surely consider is finally dropping Pascal Struijk from his starting line-up.

The Dutchman has been part of a leaky Leeds back-line which has conceded a league-high 65 goals this season, and while he looked a touch more assured against the Canaries, he should be given a rest here.

His performances in 2022 have very much left a lot to be desired, and his first couple of games under Marsch saw him look really troubled.

In his post-match player ratings following the match against Aston Villa, Leeds Live’s Beren Cross gave the 22-year-old a five, saying: “Unlucky to see his attempted block go beyond Meslier for the opener, but looked like he had an error in him all evening. Ball trickled away from him at one stage in the second half too without punishment.”

That followed on from his role in Leicester’s 1-0 victory in Marsch’s first game in charge of the club, with Rio Ferdinand slamming: “As a defender, if you’re on the halfway line with Jamie Vardy, you know what you’re playing against.

“I don’t know why he’s playing in the same line as him when he’s not even quick. You’ve got to give yourself a yard or two to see ball and man. The moment you get into a foot race with this guy, it’s curtains, it’s over for you.”

Indeed, as per WhoScored, the Dutchman hasn’t averaged a single game over a 6.8 in Leeds’ past nine fixtures in all competitions, including a shocking 4.9 and 5.3 in back-to-back encounters against Manchester United and Liverpool last month.

While match ratings certainly aren’t the be-all and end-all, there’s no questioning that Struijk has found Leeds’ slump more of a struggle than most, especially when you consider that he’s still a very young defender having to cope with a very attacking tactic which demands a lot out of him both in terms of concentration and reading of the game.

The £17m-rated youngsyer must surely be taken out of the firing line, allowing him a mental breather.

The 15 ‘Most Wasted’ Premier League talents of recent years

The Premier League has deservedly earned itself a reputation as one of the greatest leagues in the world, attracting top players from many different countries. While we’ve seen the likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Eric Cantona come to England and enhance their reputations to world class status, there are those who start off as promising talents and never quite fulfil that potential.

Unfortunately, plenty of those players are English as they fail to match the inevitable hype that comes with the tagline of being a home grown starlet. The Premier League is littered with players whose careers simply could have been better and that’s without even considering the ones who’ve dropped out of England’s top flight, sinking without trace.

Plenty of criticism is directed at our football academies for failing to develop players to a similar level to the Spanish for example, but questions also have to be raised about what happens to those enigmas who burst onto the scene before disappearing completely.

Check out ten of the biggest names in the Premier League who should have achieved so much more and five others who wasted their promise entirely.
