West Ham: Source makes Diop claim

According to French news outlet L’Equipe (via Get French Football News), West Ham United centre-back Issa Diop has begun looking for a summer exit.

The lowdown: Departure on the cards

Having arrived at the London Stadium in 2018 after the Hammers agreed on a then-club record £22m fee with Toulouse (BBC), Diop has struggled to adjust to life in the English top-flight, making 120 appearances for the Hammers.

Since the return of manager David Moyes, Diop has found himself slipping down the pecking order in East London following the signings of Craig Dawson and Kurt Zouma, indeed, he has often found himself on the bench this season.

Previously, a report from the reputable French source has claimed that Lyon were keen on signing the powerful defender and it seems that the move could well be advancing…

The latest: Meeting held

Now, as per L’Equipe, translated by GFFN, the Ligue 1 club are believed to have held talks with the 25-year-old ahead of their Europa League quarter-final defeat at the hands of the Irons.

Under contract until 2023 (Transfermarkt), GSB may well look to cash in on the man once hailed as a ‘colossus’ by Stuart Pearce.

Therefore, it’s claimed in the report that West Ham will look for €10m (£8m) in order to part ways with the six-cap France Under-21 ace this summer.

The verdict: Take the money

Albeit Diop has shown flashes of brilliance during a mixed spell in East London, ultimately the Frenchman has proved to be all too inconsistent to be relied upon by both Moyes and Manuel Pellegrini beforehand.

Whilst the Hammers continue to thrive in Europe in particular, there can be no doubt that the squad is in need of defensive reinforcements in the summer as both Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna return from long-term spells on the sidelines.

However, despite the injuries, Diop has made just 25 fleeting appearances across all competitions this season, only completing 90 minutes on eight occasions in the Premier League, and is unlikely to be offered a new deal by the West Ham hierarchy as Moyes eyes targets elsewhere.

Ijaz Butt hides from crisis – Geoff Lawson

Geoff Lawson, the former Pakistan coach, has criticised the PCB and its chairman for failing to provide the strong leadership that the country needs during one of its biggest challenges

Geoff Lawson says Pakistan cricket has suffered because of poor leadership during Ijaz Butt’s time as PCB chairman•AFP

Geoff Lawson, theformer Australian fast bowler and Pakistan coach, has criticised the PCB andits chairman, Ijaz Butt, for failing to provide the strong leadership thatthe country’s cricket needs during “one of its biggest challenges.””Even through this crisis we have heard virtually nothing from theirchairman,” Lawson said on ESPNcricinfo’s audio show . “He hides from a crisis, he is not aleader and when Pakistan need a strong leader and people to show them theway forward, they are not getting it from their board.”Lawson said before the appointment of Butt, Pakistan cricket had in place detailed long-term plans to develop the game from the grassroots up.”There were 10 and 15 year plans, plans to build regional cricket academies, fitness, fitness trainers, physios and stocking gyms with better equipment and better pay for the first-class players.”Things in Pakistan changed after Butt took charge, Lawson said. “Afterthe elections in 2008, it took some months with their hung parliament toappoint a new chairman and Ijaz Butt was appointed and really, I just seefrom that instant, there has been a decline in Pakistan cricket.”Before the spot fixing controversy, Butt’s tenure coincided with theLahore attack on the Sri Lankan team, the refusal by other countries totour Pakistan, several captaincy changes, the fallout of the Australiatour with match-fixing and disciplinary charges being levelled on playersand deteriorating relations with the ICC.Last week, Test captain Salman Butt and fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were charged under the ICC’s anti-corruption code and provisionally suspended from the game while their case is being heard. However, Lawson said Salman Butt had done a great job with a young side since being appointed captain of Pakistan and that he would be shocked if Salman Butt turned out to be at the center of the spot-fixing scandal.”If it is the case that these young players are being affected, then there is something very bad with the environment in which Pakistan cricket is being played in.”Given the stakes, Lawson said the current crisis is the greatest Pakistan cricket has faced, and unlike previous crises, the team will not have the opportunity to mend fences by playing matches at home once things calm down.”The hearings on Asif, Amir and Salman will be extremely important,” he said. “I hope against hope that things will turn out alright but this is very much a watershed for Pakistan cricket right now.”

Leeds boost as Jota ruled out at Anfield

Leeds United have been handed a big boost ahead of their return to Premier League action this evening…

What’s the latest?

Marcelo Bielsa’s side travel to Anfield to face Liverpool, who are chasing down table-toppers Manchester City in second place, and the home side will be without one of their most lethal attackers.

The Yorkshire outfit were beaten in a six-goal thriller by Manchester United on Sunday, another game in which they leaked goals for fun but there is some encouragement ahead of kick-off in Merseyside tonight.

As confirmed by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, they will be without the services of Diogo Jota for today’s encounter.

“No for tomorrow, no chance. For the final, we will see. I really don’t know in the moment. It would be easy to now say no but we will see. They are pushing but they were not on the pitch for training so that is not a good sign,” he said (via the ECHO).

“We have to see what we can do with the boys in the next few days and then we make a decision later in the week. I would love to have Bobby and Diogo available. That will not happen for tomorrow night. It is like it is.”

Boost for Bielsa

This will come as a huge boost to Bielsa and the Whites squad as the absence of Jota makes Liverpool a much weaker prospect and considering the way in which Leeds have leaked goals for fun, it’ll bolster their chances of conceding as many as they did against City (seven) or United (four).

Over the past nine league outings, the Elland Road natives have let in a whopping 28 goals (56% of their season total of 50), which is an average of 3.1 goals conceded per game.

That sort of form is surely amongst the worst in the division and is certainly cause for concern and heavy defeats in this manner will only pull the Yorkshiremen ever so much closer to a relegation dogfight.

Indeed, Leeds are just five points ahead of 17th-placed Watford in the standings and only one team in the whole division has leaked more goals in rock-bottom Norwich City (53).

A frontline of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Jota is a frightening prospect, so to have at least one of three missing is great news for Bielsa and his leaky backline.

The Portugal international has 17 goals in 32 games across all competitions this term with 12 of them being in the Premier League, which leaves him as the competition’s second-highest top-scorer, behind only Salah.

He would be in line to only add to that number if he were available to play at Anfield this evening, so the Leeds boss is surely relieved if not absolutely buzzing.

AND in other news, Bielsa must unleash Leeds’ “unbelievable” 6ft 3 “leader” today, could be game-changing…

No terceiro tempo, Carille mudou toda a equipe.

Smith dreams of following Warne's footsteps

Steven Smith was four when Shane Warne entered cricket folklore by ripping a legbreak the width of Mike Gatting, and next month Smith could become the first Australian legspinner to play a Test in England post-Warne

Seventeen years ago, an Australian legspinner walked out for his first Test match on English soil and promptly delivered the ball of the century. Steven Smith was four when Shane Warne entered cricket folklore by ripping a legbreak the width of Mike Gatting, and next month Smith could become the first Australian legspinner to play a Test in England post-Warne.Nathan Hauritz has flown home with a foot injury and unless he enjoys a miraculously quick recovery, Smith is in line to make his Test debut against Pakistan at Lord’s. He has spent plenty of time around the Test squad, having been called in as cover in Perth and Melbourne last summer before touring with the team in New Zealand. On Saturday, Smith sat in the pavilion at Old Trafford, the venue of Warne’s most famous moment, and briefly pondered the possibility of winning a baggy-green. Although he was keen to focus on the more immediate challenges of Australia’s stuttering one-day series, he said joining the elite ranks of Australia’s Test cricketers would be a magic moment.”It’s a different standard,” Smith said of Test cricket. “It’s the highest level you can play at. At the moment, Pakistan are a good side, and if I get the opportunity to play in a couple of weeks it will be a dream come true to wear the baggy green. I’m not really thinking too far ahead, it’s just about playing my best cricket at the moment and trying to win a couple of one-day games and get back in this series.”If a Test call-up does arrive, Smith should be in a positive frame of mind. He finished the domestic season with a seven-wicket Sheffield Shield haul for New South Wales, having also scored four hundreds in the tournament and finished sixth on the run tally. Then came the New Zealand tour, which was followed by an impressive World Twenty20 campaign, in which he ousted Hauritz as Australia’s preferred slow bowler and finished third on the wicket list behind Dirk Nannes and Charl Langeveldt. Throw in a solid combination of 41 with the bat and 1 for 40 with the ball on Thursday, in his second ODI, and Smith feels good about the state of his cricket.”Everything is coming together pretty well,” he said. “I learnt a lot about myself as a player in the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies. It was a big learning curve for me and coming back and playing one-day cricket, it’s always been a dream of mine to play for Australia.”It’s hard to predict what he will show in Test cricket, if given the opportunity. As a precocious, confident Australian legspinner, the Warne comparisons are inevitable, but Smith is a vastly different player. He might not have the ripping legbreak or perfect flipper, but could Warne bat in the top six at Test level? Could Warne hare around the boundary rope and take one-handed screamers time after time? Smith had some tuition from Warne during the Australian season, but doesn’t expect his bowling to leave quite the same mark as Warne did on his first trip to England.”He hasn’t taught me that one yet,” Smith joked of Warne’s Gatting delivery. “Hopefully it will come in at some point. Warney was probably the reason I started bowling legspin when I was about 14. I’ve had a few sessions with him and he’s been great for me.”Judging by Smith’s form over the past six months, he’s right about Warne’s influence. Now to start making his own mark.

Saiss to miss Norwich FA Cup clash

The wait for Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Romain Saiss to return to action is set to be extended by another game, as the Moroccan is likely to be rested for today’s FA Cup clash against Norwich City.

What’s the latest?

According to journalist Tim Spiers, the defender will be given until Sunday to have time off after competing at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), with Wolves manager Bruno Lage saying: “Even Maldini needs to rest.”

Saiss hasn’t featured for his club since their 1-0 win at Manchester United in early January before departing for AFCON with his native Morocco.

However, the 31-year-old’s nation were eliminated from the tournament last weekend, losing 2-1 to Egypt in extra-time at the quarter-final stage.

Although he has been out of action for just under a week, the Moroccan will be given extra time off before returning to action over the next few days.

Fans will be gutted

As suggested by his team selection for the 3-0 win over Sheffield United in the third round, Lage will be taking the FA Cup very seriously this season.

The Wolves manager fielded a very strong starting line-up against the Blades and is expected to do so again on Saturday when Norwich come to Molineux. Therefore, there almost certainly would’ve been a place for Saiss should he have been ready.

Despite winning both of their Premier League matches after the 31-year-old’s departure against Southampton and Brentford, Wolves failed to keep a clean sheet on either occasion.

With Saiss in the team, Wolves have kept eight clean sheets from 19 league matches, emphasising how significant the Moroccan’s presence is to the side. Indeed, he had started all of their top-flight games this season prior to departing for AFCON, illustrating how central he is to Lage’s plans.

Also, WhoScored rank him as the squad’s third-best performer so far in 2021/22, so the Molineux faithful could be gutted to hear that the 31-year-old won’t be involved today. Lage best hope that the decision to allow Saiss some additional time off doesn’t prove costly this afternoon.

English county teams will not play in the Champions League Twenty20 this year because the tournament dates – September 10 to 26 – clashes with the end of England’s domestic season. The ECB conveyed its decision in a memo circulated to the counties, saying it was “with great regret” that the Friends Provident T20 finalists would be unable to participate in the lucrative tournament in South Africa, according to a report in the .The participation of teams from England had been put in doubt after it emerged that the schedule, announced in February, would clash with crucial fixtures at the end of the English season, which runs until September 16. England will be playing Pakistan in an ODI series at the time, the final two rounds of the County Championship will be on, as well as the semi-finals and final of the ECB40 competition. The ECB had already tweaked its domestic calendar to accommodate the Champions League, which was originally scheduled for October, but the tournament was brought forward to accommodate India’s home series against Australia. The board said that counties would be able to participate in the next two Champions Leagues which will not clash with the domestic season.

Hampshire give themselves a shot at revival

In an intriguingly balanced match on a testing pitch, Hampshire have a platform from which they might just lift their spirits after a woefully poor beginning to the season with a win over the First Division leaders

Jon Culley at Trent Bridge18-May-2010
Scorecard
In an intriguingly balanced match on a testing pitch, Hampshire have a platform from which they might just lift their spirits after a woefully poor beginning to the season with a win over the First Division leaders. It is an unsteady platform, for sure, represented by a lead of just 35 runs, but after losing four of their first five matches in the Championship, to be in with a chance at the half-way stage in this one must feel like progress.Much will depend, of course, on how they bowl on day three, given that a big target on the last day could be a daunting prospect for a batting line-up lacking Michael Carberry as well as Michael Lumb and Dimitri Mascarenhas. Variable bounce is likely to be a factor on a dry, cracked pitch. They will look again to Jimmy Adams, who missed out by four runs on a first century of the campaign but was the fulcrum nonetheless of a steadfast performance from Hampshire, whose record contrasts with Nottinghamshire’s four wins from four.It could be a good moment, too, for Neil McKenzie, the former South African Test batsman, to properly prove his value to the county after a slow start to his Hampshire career. The way in which he ended a run of low scores with a first half-century in the Championship perhaps signalled a timely return to form. Two partnerships were pivotal on day two, the first of which saw Adams and Chris Benham add 115 after the loss of nightwatchman James Tomlinson left them 39 for 2.At the start of it, Darren Pattinson bowled superbly, maintaining excellent control, finding movement off the pitch as well as through the air and beating the bat repeatedly. He looked a bit like the Pattinson of two years ago, before he earned his solitary and controversial Test call-up. James Whitaker, the England selector, was looking on, as he often was then, although it would be a surprise if he is mentioned in dispatches this time.Charlie Shreck was no less impressive and when he and Pattinson gave way, Andre Adams and Paul Franks kept up the pressure. In an enthralling contest, the Hampshire pair were made to work for their runs.Indeed, their application was impressive, in particular from Jimmy Adams, who grafted for 153 balls to get to 50, although he should have been caught at second slip off his namesake’s bowling on 37, Neil Edwards spilling the chance.Benham, who had a painful blow on the elbow facing Adams the bowler, survived a difficult chance to the wicketkeeper off Pattinson on 20 soon after lunch.Adams at last found an opportunity to attack when Nottinghamshire introduced Samit Patel’s left-arm spin an hour into the afternoon session. His next 46 runs came much more briskly, all bar six of them in boundaries, but Nottinghamshire regained the initiative again when Shreck broke the stand by bowling Benham. Then Franks, who had been turned down in a vigorous appeal for lbw moments earlier, found some extra bounce and movement to Adams, who was caught behind off a thin contact and walked without waiting for the umpire’s verdict.Franks, whose all-round talents saw him accelerated into the England one-day side a decade ago only for a knee injury to blunt his progress, has been in and out of the Nottinghamshire side in recent years but seems to be thriving again now, with Mark Ealham’s retirement offering the chance to forge a permanent place. Full of confidence, he struck again four balls later in the same over, James Vince hitting him straight to Steven Mullaney at midwicket. Vince is a young man who might interest Whitaker and company at some stage, but not on this occasion. With his quick demise, Hampshire were five down and still 102 adrift. Nottinghamshire sensed a chance to take the upper hand decisively. But McKenzie and Nic Pothas had other ideas. Adding 74 in 23 overs, they swung the balance again towards Hampshire before, Pattinson, with the new ball, trapped McKenzie leg before with a fuller delivery.Adams, whose last spell was his best, dismissed Pothas and mopped up the tail to finish with 4 for 56, but not before Sean Ervine had eked out a valuable unbeaten 31 for a lead of 35.
