Smith dreams of following Warne's footsteps

Seventeen years ago, an Australian legspinner walked out for his first Test match on English soil and promptly delivered the ball of the century. Steven Smith was four when Shane Warne entered cricket folklore by ripping a legbreak the width of Mike Gatting, and next month Smith could become the first Australian legspinner to play a Test in England post-Warne.Nathan Hauritz has flown home with a foot injury and unless he enjoys a miraculously quick recovery, Smith is in line to make his Test debut against Pakistan at Lord’s. He has spent plenty of time around the Test squad, having been called in as cover in Perth and Melbourne last summer before touring with the team in New Zealand. On Saturday, Smith sat in the pavilion at Old Trafford, the venue of Warne’s most famous moment, and briefly pondered the possibility of winning a baggy-green. Although he was keen to focus on the more immediate challenges of Australia’s stuttering one-day series, he said joining the elite ranks of Australia’s Test cricketers would be a magic moment.”It’s a different standard,” Smith said of Test cricket. “It’s the highest level you can play at. At the moment, Pakistan are a good side, and if I get the opportunity to play in a couple of weeks it will be a dream come true to wear the baggy green. I’m not really thinking too far ahead, it’s just about playing my best cricket at the moment and trying to win a couple of one-day games and get back in this series.”If a Test call-up does arrive, Smith should be in a positive frame of mind. He finished the domestic season with a seven-wicket Sheffield Shield haul for New South Wales, having also scored four hundreds in the tournament and finished sixth on the run tally. Then came the New Zealand tour, which was followed by an impressive World Twenty20 campaign, in which he ousted Hauritz as Australia’s preferred slow bowler and finished third on the wicket list behind Dirk Nannes and Charl Langeveldt. Throw in a solid combination of 41 with the bat and 1 for 40 with the ball on Thursday, in his second ODI, and Smith feels good about the state of his cricket.”Everything is coming together pretty well,” he said. “I learnt a lot about myself as a player in the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies. It was a big learning curve for me and coming back and playing one-day cricket, it’s always been a dream of mine to play for Australia.”It’s hard to predict what he will show in Test cricket, if given the opportunity. As a precocious, confident Australian legspinner, the Warne comparisons are inevitable, but Smith is a vastly different player. He might not have the ripping legbreak or perfect flipper, but could Warne bat in the top six at Test level? Could Warne hare around the boundary rope and take one-handed screamers time after time? Smith had some tuition from Warne during the Australian season, but doesn’t expect his bowling to leave quite the same mark as Warne did on his first trip to England.”He hasn’t taught me that one yet,” Smith joked of Warne’s Gatting delivery. “Hopefully it will come in at some point. Warney was probably the reason I started bowling legspin when I was about 14. I’ve had a few sessions with him and he’s been great for me.”Judging by Smith’s form over the past six months, he’s right about Warne’s influence. Now to start making his own mark.

Hampshire give themselves a shot at revival

In an intriguingly balanced match on a testing pitch, Hampshire have a platform from which they might just lift their spirits after a woefully poor beginning to the season with a win over the First Division leaders

Jon Culley at Trent Bridge18-May-2010
Scorecard
In an intriguingly balanced match on a testing pitch, Hampshire have a platform from which they might just lift their spirits after a woefully poor beginning to the season with a win over the First Division leaders. It is an unsteady platform, for sure, represented by a lead of just 35 runs, but after losing four of their first five matches in the Championship, to be in with a chance at the half-way stage in this one must feel like progress.Much will depend, of course, on how they bowl on day three, given that a big target on the last day could be a daunting prospect for a batting line-up lacking Michael Carberry as well as Michael Lumb and Dimitri Mascarenhas. Variable bounce is likely to be a factor on a dry, cracked pitch. They will look again to Jimmy Adams, who missed out by four runs on a first century of the campaign but was the fulcrum nonetheless of a steadfast performance from Hampshire, whose record contrasts with Nottinghamshire’s four wins from four.It could be a good moment, too, for Neil McKenzie, the former South African Test batsman, to properly prove his value to the county after a slow start to his Hampshire career. The way in which he ended a run of low scores with a first half-century in the Championship perhaps signalled a timely return to form. Two partnerships were pivotal on day two, the first of which saw Adams and Chris Benham add 115 after the loss of nightwatchman James Tomlinson left them 39 for 2.At the start of it, Darren Pattinson bowled superbly, maintaining excellent control, finding movement off the pitch as well as through the air and beating the bat repeatedly. He looked a bit like the Pattinson of two years ago, before he earned his solitary and controversial Test call-up. James Whitaker, the England selector, was looking on, as he often was then, although it would be a surprise if he is mentioned in dispatches this time.Charlie Shreck was no less impressive and when he and Pattinson gave way, Andre Adams and Paul Franks kept up the pressure. In an enthralling contest, the Hampshire pair were made to work for their runs.Indeed, their application was impressive, in particular from Jimmy Adams, who grafted for 153 balls to get to 50, although he should have been caught at second slip off his namesake’s bowling on 37, Neil Edwards spilling the chance.Benham, who had a painful blow on the elbow facing Adams the bowler, survived a difficult chance to the wicketkeeper off Pattinson on 20 soon after lunch.Adams at last found an opportunity to attack when Nottinghamshire introduced Samit Patel’s left-arm spin an hour into the afternoon session. His next 46 runs came much more briskly, all bar six of them in boundaries, but Nottinghamshire regained the initiative again when Shreck broke the stand by bowling Benham. Then Franks, who had been turned down in a vigorous appeal for lbw moments earlier, found some extra bounce and movement to Adams, who was caught behind off a thin contact and walked without waiting for the umpire’s verdict.Franks, whose all-round talents saw him accelerated into the England one-day side a decade ago only for a knee injury to blunt his progress, has been in and out of the Nottinghamshire side in recent years but seems to be thriving again now, with Mark Ealham’s retirement offering the chance to forge a permanent place. Full of confidence, he struck again four balls later in the same over, James Vince hitting him straight to Steven Mullaney at midwicket. Vince is a young man who might interest Whitaker and company at some stage, but not on this occasion. With his quick demise, Hampshire were five down and still 102 adrift. Nottinghamshire sensed a chance to take the upper hand decisively. But McKenzie and Nic Pothas had other ideas. Adding 74 in 23 overs, they swung the balance again towards Hampshire before, Pattinson, with the new ball, trapped McKenzie leg before with a fuller delivery.Adams, whose last spell was his best, dismissed Pothas and mopped up the tail to finish with 4 for 56, but not before Sean Ervine had eked out a valuable unbeaten 31 for a lead of 35.

Saiss to miss Norwich FA Cup clash

The wait for Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Romain Saiss to return to action is set to be extended by another game, as the Moroccan is likely to be rested for today’s FA Cup clash against Norwich City.

What’s the latest?

According to journalist Tim Spiers, the defender will be given until Sunday to have time off after competing at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), with Wolves manager Bruno Lage saying: “Even Maldini needs to rest.”

Saiss hasn’t featured for his club since their 1-0 win at Manchester United in early January before departing for AFCON with his native Morocco.

However, the 31-year-old’s nation were eliminated from the tournament last weekend, losing 2-1 to Egypt in extra-time at the quarter-final stage.

Although he has been out of action for just under a week, the Moroccan will be given extra time off before returning to action over the next few days.

Fans will be gutted

As suggested by his team selection for the 3-0 win over Sheffield United in the third round, Lage will be taking the FA Cup very seriously this season.

The Wolves manager fielded a very strong starting line-up against the Blades and is expected to do so again on Saturday when Norwich come to Molineux. Therefore, there almost certainly would’ve been a place for Saiss should he have been ready.

Despite winning both of their Premier League matches after the 31-year-old’s departure against Southampton and Brentford, Wolves failed to keep a clean sheet on either occasion.

With Saiss in the team, Wolves have kept eight clean sheets from 19 league matches, emphasising how significant the Moroccan’s presence is to the side. Indeed, he had started all of their top-flight games this season prior to departing for AFCON, illustrating how central he is to Lage’s plans.

Also, WhoScored rank him as the squad’s third-best performer so far in 2021/22, so the Molineux faithful could be gutted to hear that the 31-year-old won’t be involved today. Lage best hope that the decision to allow Saiss some additional time off doesn’t prove costly this afternoon.

Romano: Spurs close in on 1st Jan signing

Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of completing their first pieces of business this January transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to Italian journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Juventus winger Dejan Kulusevski will fly to London today to complete a loan move, whilst the Lilywhites are also confident of signing his teammate Rodrigo Bentancur on a permanent deal.

“Tottenham and Juventus are preparing paperworks in the night to be signed on Sunday for Dejan Kulusevski deal. He’s prepared to fly to London in the coming hours. Loan fee around €5m,” he revealed in a very exciting update on Twitter,

“Spurs are confident to complete also Rodrigo Bentancur deal for €19m plus add ons.”

Exciting news!

It’s been a rather frustrating window for Spurs thus far.

After waiting most of the month to make their move, the north Londoners have seen multiple blows over key targets.

Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic has joined the aforementioned Serie A giants. Wolves winger Adama Traore rejected a move to Spurs in favour of his former club Barcelona and their interest in Luis Diaz triggered Premier League rivals Liverpool to make their move, a switch that the Porto dynamo favours.

However, with less than 48 hours to go, it appears as if Tottenham are close to completing a very exciting and much-needed double swoop.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-thfc-spurs-transfer-rumours-gossip-conte-paratici-levy-updates” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

In Kulusevski, Conte will be getting a versatile attacker capable of playing on the wing, in the half-spaces and through the middle. He’s a player that sporting director Fabio Paratici once signed for the Old Lady, so he knows him very well.

The Sweden international has struggled for game time under the new regime this season but during the 2020/21 campaign, he provided 14 direct goal contributions in 47 appearances, both domestically and on the international stage.

Once likened to Mo Salah, the 21-year-old dynamo has also been dubbed “explosive” on the ball by ex-Villa striker Marcus Allback.

Meanwhile, Bentancur would hand Conte with a new option in the engine room, something he has been said to want as one of three priority signings this month.

He’s capable of breaking up play in the heart of the pitch, having averaged 1.7 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in Serie A this season. That’s on top of an 87.5% pass accuracy, too.

On the above evidence, you’d imagine that both Conte and the Lilywhites faithful will be absolutely buzzing with Romano’s latest update.

AND in other news, Bid accepted: Spurs now closing in on first January signing, Conte will be buzzing…

Ndombele ‘so close’ to leaving Spurs

Writing on his personal Twitter feed, Sportitalia TV journalist Rudy Galetti has made a major Tottenham Hotspur exit claim involving club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele.

The Lowdown: Tanguy on the move?

Spurs manager Antonio Conte has recently left Ndombele out in the wilderness at N17, even forcing him to train alone at Hotspur Way as the Lilywhites enter talks with Ligue 1 giants Paris-Saint Germain over his possible transfer (The Guardian).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

PSG apparently want the 25-year-old on loan until the end of the season, with former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino keen on a reunion with his former star.

There has even been talk of a potential swap deal, with journalist Jason Burt of The Telegraph claiming that Tottenham and transfer chief Fabio Paratici have been ‘offered’ midfielder Leandro Paredes.

In an update on the transfer saga, Galetti has made a significant claim on social media.

The Latest: Ndombele ‘so close’ to leaving…

According to his sources, the France international has ‘never been so close’ to leaving Tottenham, with negotiations now at an advanced stage.

The reporter claimed on Twitter: “Ndombele has never been so close to PSG. Talks advanced with Tottenham for a 6-months loan. Evolving situation.”

The Verdict: Right move…

Given Ndombele’s turbulent time at Spurs since he asked to leave in the summer, Lilywhites fans may be hoping that this move goes through despite the midfielder’s obvious quality.

No Spurs player completed more successful take-ons last season than the former Lyon sensation (WhoScored), yet there have always been doubts surrounding his attitude and application.

He turned on the style at times under former Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho, but these glimpses of talent haven’t been enough to make his stay in north London a success thus far. Letting him go out on a temporary deal may just be the right move for all parties.
