'No decision yet on Pollard, Bravo and Narine'

Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine are yet to formally give their consent to represent Trinidad & Tobago, instead of their IPL franchises

Still no clarity on whether Keiron Pollard will play for T&T or Mumbai Indians•Global Cricket Ventures-BCCI

Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine are yet to formally give their consent to represent Trinidad & Tobago, instead of their IPL franchises, in the forthcoming Champions League Twenty20, a T&T board official has told ESPNcricinfo. IPL franchises also say they are unaware of any decision taken by the players to represent T&T.Earlier this week the T&T sports minister, Anil Roberts, had said that the three players agreed to sign the Memorandum of Understanding to play for their country instead of their IPL franchise. In return, the government would compensate them with a suitable match fee.A T&T Cricket Board official, speaking on condition of anonymity, however told ESPNcricinfo that a final decision was yet to be reached. “The players have not yet signed on a contract either way, whether they would like to play for the IPL franchise or Trinidad and Tobago. (But) We should have a decision within the next 48 hours.”The three franchises that the players represent are IPL winners Kolkata Knight Riders, defending CLT20 champions Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings; all three feature in the CLT20 to be held in South Africa this year. All three players have been influential performers for their respective franchises. The CLT20 organisers have asked T&T to play the pre-tournament qualifiers, instead of giving the team a direct entry. T&T, who made the finals of the inaugural CLT20 in 2009, form part of a six-team qualifying pool, divided into two, with the winner from each set joining the top eight teams in the main event. The lack of direct entry has evoked criticism from the T&T board. So far none of the players have commented on the issue in public but their franchises have not taken kindly to Roberts’ comments. A Mumbai Indians spokesperson said that as far as they understand the situation, the T&T sports minister has spoken to the players or their agents but that no decision has yet been made on who the players will play for. Venky Mysore, the chief executive of Knight Riders, said in a text message that the franchise did not wish to comment at the moment but might have an update in a day or two. No one from the Super Kings’ management could be reached for a comment. The franchises’ reaction contradicted Roberts’ statement that he had explained to them the exact reason the players should be representing T&T. “So while they may be upset, I tell them I am very sorry they are upset, but the [T&T] population wants our best players, the government wants our best players,” Roberts had said. “The players want to play for Trinidad & Tobago and they will play for Trinidad & Tobago.”There has been no official reaction yet from the CLT20 governing council, but Rajiv Shukla, chairman IPL governing council, said he was unaware about the development. “It is between the player and the franchises,” Shukla told ESPNcricinfo. “Let the franchise approach us and then we will check.”The IPL Player Contract has a Clause 3.1 (i) containing three varying conditions regarding the players’ CLT20 participation. The clause states that a player will play solely for a franchise in the IPL and in the CLT20 if the team qualifies for it unless the player is not selected for the squad or is released by the franchises “in its absolute discretion” to play for “another team which has qualified” for the CLT20. It is the third condition which leaves the situation open-ended stating that the player can play for another team in the CLT20 if, “the rules of the CLT20 (or any agreement to which the Franchisee has agreed) permit the Player to elect to play for another team (not being a team in the League) which has qualified for such CLT20 and the Player so elects.” The rules of the IPL however state that it is the IPL franchise that has the first choice over a player in the CLT20. Under those conditions, the IPL franchisee has to pay the player’s second club/ first-class team an amount approaching $150,000 per player.Incidentally Pollard, Bravo and Narine were part of the T&T squad in the inaugural edition of the CLT20, when they lost to New South Wales in the final in 2009. But back then Pollard and Narine had no IPL contracts and Bravo had played for Mumbai Indians, who had not qualified for the CLT20.

Former BCCI president PM Rungta dies

PM Rungta, a former BCCI president and head of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, has died at the age of 84 at his residence in Mumbai

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jul-2012PM Rungta, a former BCCI president and head of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, has died at the age of 84 at his residence in Mumbai. Rungta had been ill for a while and had been recently operated on. He had served as BCCI president from 1972-73 to 1974-75.”Mr. Rungta was an individual who lived and breathed cricket,” N Srinivasan, the BCCI president, said. “He served the BCCI with distinction as its president, and was an invaluable guide in later years. He will always be missed.”Rungta, who was nickname was “Bhaiji” (big brother), was “crazy for cricket”, according to former India captain Ajit Wadekar, whose career overlapped with Rungta’s time as board president. Wadekar said Rungta was very accessible to the players while he was playing. “We could approach him directly and not have to go through the proper channels,” Wadekar said. “He would take decisions on his own.”Back then the board was not the financial powerhouse it is now, and the players often had to rely on the largesse of individual board members for uniforms and equipment. “He [Rungta] used to spend from his own pocket quite a lot – clothing and other things like caps and ties,” Wadekar said. Rungta also used to host a farewell party for the players at his house in Mumbai before every overseas tour.Rungta was also on the BCCI’s disciplinary committee that banned six players, including Dilip Vengsarkar, Kapil Dev and Ravi Shastri, for a year for playing friendly matches in the United States and Canada after a poor tour of the West Indies in 1989. That decision led to the players challenging the board in court for the first time, a battle they ultimately won. After facing criticism from all quarters, including the Supreme Court, the board relented and withdrew the ban.Rungta’s brother, Kishan, is a former first-class cricketer and chairman of the national selection panel, while his son Kishore is a former treasurer of the BCCI.

McDonald leaves Renegades, Stars lose Bailey

The Melbourne Renegades have lost their captain Andrew McDonald to the Adelaide Strikers and the national T20 skipper George Bailey has moved from the Melbourne Stars to the Hobart Hurricanes

Andrew McDonald will play for the Adelaide Strikers this year•South Australian Cricket Association

The Melbourne Renegades have lost their captain Andrew McDonald to the Adelaide Strikers and the national T20 skipper George Bailey has moved from the Melbourne Stars to the Hobart Hurricanes. The eight Big Bash League teams have until this Friday to sign the majority of their players and most sides were active on Monday, when Phillip Hughes and Nathan Rimmington also changed teams.Rimmington has moved from the Perth Scorchers to the Renegades, while Hughes has not surprisingly switched from the Sydney Thunder to the Strikers, after he signed with South Australia in the longer formats. He will be joined in Adelaide by the allrounder McDonald, who said he was excited to be working with the Strikers coach Darren Berry.”While it was a big decision to leave the Renegades, I think the structure and plans that Chuck Berry has for the Strikers this summer are really impressive, and I’m really excited about coming over,” McDonald said. “I’ve always enjoyed playing at Adelaide Oval, and I know a lot of the guys in the team, so this was an opportunity I wanted to commit to.”Bailey has also departed from Melbourne, leaving the MCG-based stars to play for the Hurricanes, an understandable manoeuvre given his status as captain of Tasmania. “I really like the way the Hurricanes line-up is coming together and I hope the team can go a step further than last season’s semi-final,” Bailey said.In other deals on Monday, Michael Klinger re-signed with the Strikers, Ben Laughlin with the Hurricanes and the fast bowler Ben Edmondson joined the Scorchers. The Perth side also signed Joe Mennie, Tim Armstrong, Jason Behrendorff and Ashton Agar. The Thunder named their first players for this season, with Sean Abbott, Scott Coyte, his brother Adam Coyte, Luke Doran and Gurinder Sandhu all signing up.

Fast bowler Ishant Sharma has been ruled out of the IPL after undergoing an ankle surgery earlier this month, which is likely to keep him out of action for at least six months. Deccan Chargers, Ishant’s IPL franchise, confirmed the development, saying they would now be seeking permission from the IPL for a replacement player.Ishant had been delaying the surgery for nearly a year, but finally decided to take the plunge after he returned from Australia in January, where he had played the Test-leg of the tour. Though he impressed in patches, Ishant remained inconsistent and only managed five wickets at an average of 90.20 in the four-Test series. It is understood that he had considered delaying the surgery post this IPL season, but that would have ruled him out of the home series against England, starting in November. Ishant is likely to plan his rehabilitation so that he can make a return during the home series against New Zealand, also later in the year.”The wound is likely to heal in three months’ time and he is solely focussing on that,” a source close to Ishant told ESPNcricinfo.Last year, Ishant’s India team-mate Virender Sehwag was in a similar scenario with a shoulder injury but he chose to delay his surgery. After the World Cup, he played through pain at the start of the IPL but withdrew midway through the tournament. He was ruled out of the West Indies tour and missed the start of the Test series in England.Edited by Kanishkaa Balachandran

Deccan hope for turnaround after break

ESPNcricinfo previews the 20th match of IPL 2012 between Rajasthan Royals and Deccan Chargers in Jaipur

The Preview by Kanishkaa Balachandran16-Apr-2012Match factsTuesday, April 17, 2012
Start time 1600 (1030GMT)Dale Steyn needs more support•AFP

Big pictureDeccan Chargers have had a week to get over the last-ball heist by Rohit Sharma in Visakhapatnam, a game the Chargers shouldn’t have lost. For a team struggling on form and balance, they had an opportunity to put one across the tournament contenders, but panicked. It could have been a different story if they hadn’t bowled so many full tosses, and if Dale Steyn had more support. Against Rajasthan Royals, they will start as underdogs. The Royals hit the summit of the points table after their win against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Ajinkya Rahane slaughtered the relatively inexperienced Indian bowlers in the attack and the Chargers bowling attack isn’t the most threatening. There could be a case to give Brad Hodge an opportunity right at the top of the order, if Rahul Dravid moves down.Players to watchAt this point, the Chargers would love to have a bowler as good as Dale Steyn to partner him. His countryman Richard Levi got a working over in Visakhapatnam, playing, missing, weaving and losing his middle stump. He bowled with the kind of pace rarely seen on Indian pitches and conceded just 12 off his four overs for his three wickets. In hindsight, his captain should have bowled him for the final over.Siddharth Trivedi has been an unsung hero for the Royals, picking up 47 wickets in 50 games overall. He compensates for his lack of pace with his nagging line, bowled from back of a length. He attacked the stumps regularly against Royal Challengers, getting all wickets bowled. On a slow pitch, he can be difficult to get away.2011 head-to-headThese teams played each other just once last season, with the Royals chasing down 138 easily winning by eight wickets in Hyderabad. Johan Botha was the top scorer for the Royals with an unbeaten 67.Stats and triviaThe Royals have an overwhelming advantage in the head-to-head record, winning six out of seven games. In the game between Royals and Chargers in 2008, Royals chased down 215, still a record for the highest successful chase in the IPL.Quotes”We had got into a winning situation but failed to close the match (against Mumbai Indians). When we get into situations like that, we need to clinch the games and win.”
“That’s the beauty of Rajasthan Royals. We don’t have too many big names apart from one superstar (Shane Warne) who used to play here and now he is retired.”

Wright returns with crucial fifty

England allrounder Luke Wright struck a half-century as the Sussex defeated the Northamptonshire by 12 runs in a low-scoring encounter

20-May-2012
ScorecardEngland allrounder Luke Wright struck a half-century as the Sussex defeated the Northamptonshire by 12 runs in a low-scoring encounter in the Clydesdale Bank 40.Sussex were bowled out for 180 inside 36 overs with Lee Daggett taking 4 for 31 and Wright, who was playing his first match of the season after IPL duties and illness, top-scoring by blasting 59 off 57 balls. Despite David Sales’ 51 off 70 deliveries, Northamptonshire fell short of their meagre target as they were limited to 168 for 7, Will Beer claiming 2 for 21.Sussex won the toss and chose to bat and lost Ireland batsman Ed Joyce for 23 when he missed his attempted sweep off James Middlebrook and the ball went on to hit his leg stump. This broke an opening stand of 73 with Wright and Matt Machan then faced five balls without scoring before he edged Daggett to Northants wicketkeeper David Murphy.Three deliveries later, former Zimbabwe international Murray Goodwin followed him back to the pavilion when he edged Daggett to Sales at slip. Wright went on to complete an explosive half-century off just 44 balls but Joe Gatting made only four before being bowled by Con de Lange.Wright then perished when he launched Middlebrook to David Willey at long on before Sharks wicketkeeper Ben Brown was trapped lbw by de Lange after plundering 20. Beer was the next to fall when he was caught and bowled by de Lange before Lee Daggett’s delivery careered into Sussex captain Michael Yardy’s off stump after he had reached 39.Daggett then pinned Amjad Khan lbw before Northants skipper Andrew Hall brought the innings to an end when England spinner Monty Panesar chipped him to Daggett at mid-off.Chasing 181, the the home side lost Willey in the third over when he was bowled by Yardy and Kyle Coetzer followed for the same score when his off stump was taken out by Wright.Opener Stephens Peters looked well set on 39 but he threw his wicket away when he smashed ex-Northants man Panesar to Machan at long off. Sales hung around to reach 50 off 67 balls but he soon fell when he was caught leg before by Beer after missing his sweep shot and Middlebrook departed with the very next ball by chipping Beer to Joyce at midwicket.Rob White was dismissed for 29 in the penultimate over when he launched Chris Liddle high into the air and was taken by Brown before Hall hammered the same bowler to Beer at deep midwicket.
