Cássio; Fagner, Pedro Henrique, Pablo e Guilherme Arana; Gabriel e Maycon; Jadson, Rodriguinho e Romero; Jô.

Don't knock our first-class experience – Hussey

Michael Hussey has backed a new-look Australia to build on their series victory in 2004 – the first time they won in India for 35 years – and create their own history in the upcoming four-Test contest. Hussey also warned India not to underestimate an inexperienced touring side and credited Australia’s domestic competitions as a platform for success.”I think we will take a lot of things out of 2004 but the personnel is so different that we are sort of a new team, trying to create our own history,” Hussey said in Jaipur. “We have lost so many great players from that series. We are new and fresh and want to put our own stamp on things.”Australia’s touring squad includes only four players – Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Simon Katich and Michael Clarke – who have played Tests in India. Anil Kumble, India’s captain, has said that India have a good chance of beating Australia due to their vast experience, but Hussey warned against any such theories.”I don’t think age is any barrier,” he said. “The big strength we have is the Indians might think we’re inexperienced, and perhaps in Test cricket in this country we are, but the guys that have come in have played a lot of first-class cricket for their states. I think it would be a bit of a mistake to underestimate the newer, more inexperienced guys in our team.”We have a very, very strong first-class system, so anyone who comes in is going to have to have put some good performances on the board and really deserve their chance. I think they’re very seasoned, hardened cricketers, and it’s a case of how quickly we can adapt to the conditions.”Hussey said preparations were well in place ahead of the Test series, which begins in Bangalore on October 9. Australia are currently in Jaipur, where they play a tour match against the Rajasthan Cricket Association’s Centre of Excellence on September 27-28.”Everyone should be preparing as though they’re going to play and there’s going to be some unlucky guys who miss out,” Hussey said. “Everyone can consider themselves a very good chance of playing, which is very healthy.”

India backs Pakistan as Champions Trophy venue

India will back Pakistan as the Champions Trophy venue despite concerns about security from players from non-Asian countries

Cricinfo staff23-Jul-2008The ICC board’s discussion – via a teleconference on Thursday – on the issue of Pakistan hosting the Champions Trophy is likely to see India resist any move to change the venue, though there is a growing fear of top players from non-Asian countries pulling out. The ICC will take a final decision which, if it cannot be reached via consensus, needs a 7-3 vote. The Indian board sees “no harm” in Pakistan hosting the tournament in September, Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, said on Wednesday. “We are supporting Pakistan as the venue of the Champions Trophy,” Shah told Cricinfo. “Our Indian team had taken part in the Asia Cup without any incident. Besides, the report of the ICC’s security consultants, which was presented during the briefing in Dubai (on Sunday) was positive. So the BCCI sees no harm in Pakistan hosting the tournament.”If it’s a battle of legality and logic, we have won it. But if they still say that they have reservations, what can we do? Shafqat Naghmi, the PCB’s chief operating officer, told APHowever, it’s understood that if there is stiff opposition to playing in Pakistan, especially from England, Australia and New Zealand, and the ICC reiterates its inability to provide any safety guarantees, the Indian board may suggest that the tournament be shifted to Sri Lanka, the official alternate venue.Duleep Mendis, the chief executive of Sri Lanka Cricket, had told Cricinfo earlier this week that his country was “very confident” of hosting the event if it was moved out of Pakistan. Apparently, Indian officials believe that the current security climate in Sri Lanka, where India is currently playing a Test series, is peaceful and conducive for hosting the tournament.Another option that may be discussed during Thursday’s teleconference is postponing the event, even though Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, said, “We are trying our best to hold the tournament as per schedule and hope that it is not postponed.”As of now though, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are learnt to be firmly behind Pakistan, the official host, which also seems to have gained the support of Cricket South Africa, even as players’ associations from England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa have warned of a pullout by cricketers who fear for their safety.”We must give Pakistan every opportunity to host the tournament to the best of their ability,” Norman Arendse, the president of Cricket South Africa (CSA) told Independent Online. “I’m inclined to support Pakistan’s hosting of the tournament. I know it might sound easy for us as administrators to make such decisions as we stay home while the players go to Pakistan, but I assure you it is not so.”However, Tony Irish, the chief executive of the South Africa Cricketers’ Association (SACA), said that there was a possibility of top players from his country pulling out of the tournament if it went ahead as scheduled (from September 11) in Pakistan. “I can’t confirm this, but yes, there could be some players pulling out,” Irish told Cricinfo.Irish said that the players reiterated their concern at touring Pakistan after the SACA reported back to them on the ICC’s security briefing in Dubai, which Irish attended. At the meeting, the players’ representatives were told that the governing body or the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) couldn’t give any foolproof security guarantees.”We have serious concerns with the security situation in Pakistan, especially after the briefing in Dubai,” Irish said.Arendse told Independent Online that he was aware of SACA’s views and would consult Logan Naidoo, the manager of the South Africa team that toured Pakistan last year, and the rest of his board before the teleconference. The board meeting – at which India will be represented by Shashank Manohar, the BCCI’s president-elect – will consider a report on the security briefing conducted by the ICC last Sunday for officials of the eight participating nations, broadcast executives and players’ representatives. However, it’s learnt that the report for the ICC board does not contain any specific recommendation.

Indian seamers strike on truncated day

India A’s seamers, led by Dhawal Kulkarni, made steady inroads to leave Australia A at an unsatisfactory 65 for 3 in a truncated day in Hyderabad

India A’s seamers, led by Dhawal Kulkarni, made steady inroads to leave Australia A at an unsatisfactory 82 for 3 in a truncated day in Hyderabad. Poor weather continued to take the sheen off the series as play started five hours late due to a wet outfield. The umpires played it by the hour, and after periodic inspections, tried to get in three hours of play. Though the rain stayed away, bad light forced the players off the field with an hour of play still left.A grassy pitch – unaffected by the weather – didn’t deter Simon Katich from opting to bat but his choice wasn’t entirely surprising. Australia’s batsmen recovered well after being asked to follow-on in Bangalore and his decision was probably intended to carry on the momentum.Australia’s opening pair added 88 in the second innings in Bangalore but failed to replicate that effort. Phillip Hughes and Katich saw off the first few overs comfortably, but a lapse in concentration cost Hughes his wicket. Kulkarni, who opened the bowling ahead of Sudeep Tyagi, preferred bowling over the wicket to the left-handers and an away swinger induced an outside edge into the safe hands of Mohammad Kaif at second slip.Kulkarni, however, failed to trouble Katich and was guilty of feeding too many deliveries close to his pads. Katich, a strong on side player, regularly shuffled across his stumps and flicked and glanced Kulkarni for four boundaries down to the region between fine leg and deep square-leg. The Indians continued to attack, packing the inner ring with fielders.Katich’s partner Adam Voges looked to get on top of the seamers, dispatching two half-volleys over square leg. He failed to push on as Kulkarni got one to kick up off a good length, feathering a thick edge to Parthiv Patel. The wicket went against the run of play, just as the Australians were progressing smoothly with a stand of 44. Tyagi, the UP seamer then opened his tally when Katich slashed at a delivery close to his body, with Mohnish Parmar at gully taking a sharp catch. Marcus North and George Bailey were at the crease for a short while before the light deteriorated. The forecast is for more rains in the evenings, thereby diminishing any chance of a result after the draw in Bangalore.

Liverpool linked to Lucas Ocampos

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Sevilla forward Lucas Ocampos as manager Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his attacking options.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish publication Fichajes (as relayed by the Daily Star), the Reds are contemplating making a move for the highly-rated 27-year-old with only a few days remaining of the current window.

Ocampos is under contract at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan until 2024 and would command a sizeable fee if Liverpool are serious about pursuing their interest in the Argentina international.

Liverpool fans will be buzzing

The South American forward arrived at Sevilla from Ligue 1 outfit Marseille back in 2019 in a £12.8m move and has enjoyed two successful seasons with Julen Lopetegui’s charges.

In 90 appearances for Los Nervionenses, Ocampos has bagged 25 goals and provided nine assists, playing a pivotal part in their 2019/20 Europa League triumph and back-to-back top-four La Liga finishes.

Speaking about the versatile forward previously, Fede Prami, a journalist and River Plate fan recalled his days in Argentina, calling him “electric.”

And, therefore, it’s easy to understand why Klopp is reportedly keen to add Ocampos to his first-team squad before the August 31st deadline.

With Xherdan Shaqiri sealing his move to Lyon, the German tactician has space for another overseas talent, and the funds generated from his departure should give Klopp room to maneuver in the market, meaning a replacement for the diminutive Swiss attacker could be on the way.

Although Liverpool’s current front four of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota have all found the back of the net in the opening weeks of the new campaign, the 19-time English champions are likely to need greater strength in depth in order to fight on multiple fronts.

Therefore, a large section of the club’s supporters will surely be buzzing to learn of the Anfield outfit’s interest in the £36m-rated magician.

After watching their domestic rivals spend huge money on several superstar acquisitions in the final third of the pitch, Liverpool’s director of football Michael Edwards must follow suit, providing Klopp with the resources he needs to guide the Merseysiders back to the Premier League summit.

Ismael drops major West Brom injury update

West Bromwich Albion have been handed a double injury boost ahead of their Championship fixture on Saturday.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the club’s official website, Valerien Ismael confirmed that both Grady Diangana and Matt Clarke look set to feature against Luton Town on Saturday, with each player having recovered from their respective injuries.

Diangana managed 64 minutes in Albion’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last weekend before being withdrawn due to a knock, while Clarke missed the fixture after picking up a hip injury on the morning of the game.

However, both players now look ready to return to action, with the Frenchman stating: “Grady is ok. He’s recovered well and we’ve had a long week to prepare him for Saturday’s game.

“We managed him quite well at the start of the week and then he trained the last three days with the full squad. We’re happy he’s available for the game.

“Matt Clarke is also back after he suffered a very small injury before the game against Bournemouth last weekend. It’s great for me to have the choice and the players need to make it difficult for me to pick the team and the squad.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Diangana was for Albion in their most recent Championship campaign, and that Clarke would very much appear to be an upgrade on his replacement last week (Cedric Kipre), West Brom fans must be buzzing that both players look set to play a part against Luton this weekend.

Diangana’s availability is a particularly big boost, with the winger having scored eight goals, registered six assists and created eight big chances over his 30 Championship appearances for the Baggies back in 2019/20.

These returns saw the £9m-rated man earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.06, ranking him as the club’s third-best performer in the second tier that season.

Meanwhile, over Clarke’s 42 Championship appearances while on loan at Derby County last season, the £2.7m-rated man helped his side to keep 12 clean sheets, as well as averaging 1.4 interceptions, 1.4 tackles and 4.3 clearances and winning a whopping 8.1 duels per game.

These metrics saw the £21k-per-week centre-back earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.05, ranking him as the Rams’ third-best player in the league.

As such, both players very much seem to have the ability to make a real difference in Ismael’s promotion push this season, with the manager undoubtedly hoping that Diangana and Clarke can help him secure his first Championship win with West Brom against Luton on Saturday.

Jozwiak struggles as Derby sneak through

Having kicked off their Championship campaign with a spirited draw last weekend, Wayne Rooney’s Derby County side once again displayed a tremendous amount of fight on Tuesday evening in order to qualify for the Carabao Cup second round.

Having fallen behind to two early first-half Salford City goals, with Jordan Turnbull putting the visitors ahead in the eighth minute before Josh Morris doubled the League Two side’s lead six minutes later, Derby fans must have been worried their side could be in for something of a hiding from their lower league opponents.

However, Isaac Hutchinson got the Rams back in the game shortly before half-time, before Colin Kazim-Richards went on to level the scores with a 71st-minute penalty, with the momentum very much appearing to be with the home side as the game wore on.

But, with Derby being Derby, nothing is done the easy way, and when Josh Morris bagged his second of the game just three minutes after the equaliser, those first-half fears may have been creeping back in for the Pride Park faithful.

In the end, it required a moment of magic from one of Rooney’s summer additions to eventually pull Derby level once again, with Ravel Morrison, after seeing his initial free-kick crash into the wall, thrashing a half-volley from 25-yards out into the top corner of the Salford goal in the 82nd minute.

The game would ultimately finish 3-3, with the Rams proving to be the side who kept their composure in the subsequent penalty shootout, dispatching all five of their spot-kicks to Salford’s three.

However, despite a number of impressive performances in the fixture, with Morrison, Louie Watson and Colin Kazim-Richards being the pick of the bunch, there were nevertheless a couple of players who saw the game pass them by slightly – none more so than Kamil Jozwiak.

Indeed, the 23-year-old appeared to be at fault for Salford’s opener, losing his man at the corner, while his statistics from the fixture do not exactly make pleasant reading.

Over the course of the 90 minutes, the winger mustered no shots, either on or off target, lost 73% of his duels – 3 out of 11 – and gave away possession of the ball on 13 occasions.

However, of these statistics, it was perhaps the £7k-per-week forward’s inability to get into scoring positions that stood out most, with The Athletic journalist Ryan Conway dubbing Jozwiak “shot-shy” after the game.

Overall, the Poland international’s display saw him earn a disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.4, ranking him as the joint second-worst performer from either side in the fixture.

So, while Rooney is not exactly blessed with options in the wide attacking areas of his squad, most likely meaning that he will be forced to rely upon Jozwiak once again this weekend, the 35-year-old will undoubtedly be hoping the winger turns in a much more profitable performance against Peterborough United.

Ricky Ponting will make an early departure from the Caribbean as he continues to battle an injury to his right wrist. Ponting will fly out for Australia immediately after it became clear he was unlikely to play in the final ODI of the series against West Indies in St Kitts on Sunday.”Ricky has a tendon injury in his right wrist and he will be flying home to see a specialist in Melbourne,” Justin Steer, the team physio, said. “Given his unavailability for the last match of the series we see this as a good opportunity to have him see the specialist at his earliest convenience.”He suffered the injury while batting in the third ODI in Grenada on Sunday and was ruled out of Friday’s fourth game in St Kitts. Ponting’s absence means Michael Clarke will captain the side as they aim for a 5-0 series whitewash, with Michael Hussey to act as Clarke’s vice-captain.Ponting will be the third squad member to head home from the West Indies mid-series. Matthew Hayden was ruled out before the first Test with an achilles tendon injury and Brad Haddin departed after one ODI as he battled a broken finger.
