Barbados go under to Guyana

Despite the last-minute fight back of their lower order, Barbados succumbed to the combined efforts of Guyana and suffered their first defeat in the 2002 Regional Under-15 cricket tournament yesterday

Louis Holder01-Apr-2002Despite the last-minute fight back of their lower order, Barbados succumbed to the combined efforts of Guyana and suffered their first defeat in the 2002 Regional Under-15 cricket tournament yesterday. After suffering a middle order collapse, Barbados, chasing a target of 211 to secure their second consecutive victory, were struggling on 126 for eight at the Gilbert Park ground in central Trinidad. But intelligent and careful batting by their Nos. 9 and 10, Javon Searles and Gary Belle, gave them a temporary glimmer of hope. The pair added a valuable 47 for the ninth-wicket, but the task was always going to be a tough one. When Searles was stumped by the big and vociferous Guyanese wicket-keeper Tyrell Tull for 42, it was virtually over for the spirited Barbados team.Searles’ innings included five fours and a six.Last man Steve Pinder kept company with Belle until the completion of the 50 overs.Three of Barbados’ four batsmen made it to the 20s without going on to get a major score.Three sixesCaptain Nicholas Squires made 21 with three sixes and a four, while left-hander Omar Phillips, who hit 84 in Barbados’ 144-run win against Jamaica on Saturday, was run out for 32 that included four boundaries.Jed Yearwod, batting at No. 4, also chipped in with 22.Earlier, Guyana, having won the toss, reached 210 for eight with the help of some sloppy fielding by Barbados.Six chances went abegging after Guyana lost two early wickets.Off-spinner Belle and fast bowler Andre Gill bowled economically, but left-arm spinner Steve Pinder was lashed for 59 runs from his 10 overs. In another match, two-time defending champions Trinidad and Tobago defeated Jamaica by seven wickets at Monroe Road.It was the second successive victory for the hosts.Windward Islands registered their first win by defeating Leeward Islands by 62 runs at Barataria Oval. The tournament continues tomorrow after today’s rest day.

Paul Stewart warns Raphinha is not Liverpool standard - Exclusive

Leeds United attacker Raphinha is not Liverpool standard, ex-Reds player Paul Stewart has warned his former side.

Raphinha has settled to life in England well, coming up with 15 goal involvements in his debut Premier League season.

The Brazilian is now being linked with a move to Anfield, with journalist Gianluigi Longari claiming that Liverpool are leading the race to sign him.

Stewart, however, albeit a fan of the player, has warned Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and sporting director Michael Edwards that Raphinha is not at the required standard yet.

“For me, he’s not Liverpool standard,” Stewart said in an exclusive interview with TT. “I think he’s a great player, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think you’re getting anything better in terms of [Sadio] Mane, [Roberto] Firmino and [Mohamed] Salah.”

Even if Raphinha is ready to make that step up to a team like Liverpool, getting him out of Leeds is likely to be extremely difficult.

The £27m-rated player only arrived at Elland Road in the last summer transfer window so still has three years left on his contract.

Bearing that in mind, and the fact that he has already become so important to Leeds with his contribution in attack, it would be a surprise if the Yorkshire club were willing to let him go this transfer window.

Everton transfer update on Palhinha

Everton are reportedly among some of Europe’s top clubs keen on signing Joao Palhinha in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Midfielders needed?

Given that both Gylfi Sigurdsson and James Rodriguez have recently been linked with moves away from Goodison Park, the Merseyside club may need to invest in more midfield players ahead of the new 2021/22 season.

They have been strongly linked with a move for Matheus Nunes, but may assess other options the further into the window that they go.

The Latest: Palhinha eyed

As per Record (via Sport Witness), the Toffees are keen on signing Palhinha, although they face competition from Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla for his signature.

However, the news outlet claims that while the Blues are interested, they have ‘other priorities’, namely his teammate at Sporting – Nunes.

They also cite that Palhinha is currently away with Portugal at Euro 2020, and claim that he was one of their ‘best performers’ when he came on in the 2-2 draw with France in the group stages.

The Verdict: Sign

If EFC were to lose a few midfielders, and were not able to sign Nunes, then Palhinha would certainly be a good player to bring in and help bolster the squad.

He was such a key player in Sporting’s recent domestic title win, winning a tremendous 9.1 duels a game, while also averaging a whopping 3.3 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 1.2 clearances per match (Sofascore).

At just 25 years of age as well, Palhinha still has potential to improve further, and that could well be fulfilled at Everton.

West Ham enquiry made for Camara

According to Sport Witness, West Ham United and Aston Villa have both ‘asked for information’ in enquiries to sign BSC Young Boys defender Mohamed Ali Camara.

The Lowdown: West Ham in defender chase…

David Moyes reportedly has three transfer priorities for West Ham this summer as he aims to bolster key positions ahead of what is set to be a busy 2021/2022 campaign.

A permanent deal for 20/21 loan star Jesse Lingard and a new star striker are said to be at the forefront of his mind, but Moyes is also eyeing a new centre-back to reinforce his back four (Claret & Hugh).

Fabian Balbuena is set to leave the club when his contract expires June 30 and West Ham will be on the look out for a replacement.

The Latest: West Ham make enquiry to sign Camara…

As per Sport Witness, West Ham have now ‘asked for information’ in an enquiry to sign BSC Young Boys powerhouse Camara alongside Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 6 foot 3 defender was a colossal presence for Young Boys, making 39 appearances in all competitions and leading them to a Swiss league title.

Indeed, his form hasn’t gone unnoticed in England either as both the Hammers and Villa eye a move.

Despite Camara just putting pen to paper on a contract extension last month, a source has still told Sport Witness that Young Boys will allow the player to leave if they receive a convincing enough offer.

Moyes and West Ham have probed in regards to Camara but it remains to be seen whether they take it further.

The Verdict: Good option?

Enjoying a highly impressive season at the heart of Young Boys’ defence, Camara could come as a good candidate to strengthen West Ham’s centre-back options.

It’s unclear how much the Swiss giants would demand for Camara, but the five-cap Guinea international may be attract plenty of interest due to his great year at the Wankdorf Stadium.

There is still plenty of time left in the summer market to assess options and we believe the 23-year-old should definitely be in the conversation, at the very least.

Sheffield Wednesday tipped to sign Josh Griffiths - Exclusive

West Brom’s Josh Griffiths will be a top target for Darren Moore and Sheffield Wednesday this summer, says Football FanCast’s EFL spy.

Goalkeeper is thought to be one position that Moore is keen on strengthening this transfer window, and Griffiths appears to be the man he has turned to.

According to Yorkshire Live, Moore is tracking the West Brom youngster, though he faces competition from Portsmouth and Lincoln City.

Interest from Wednesday’s League One rivals complicates things, but FFC’s EFL insider believes Griffiths will be a priority for the former Doncaster Rovers manager.

“Josh Griffiths is a top target and rightly so,” he said. “He had a great season with Cheltenham’s promotion side and had another step up with them.

“Darren Moore would have worked with him at West Brom so there will be a lot of assurance and confidence from the staff for him to come into the massive club Wednesday is and do well.”

Having recently released Keiren Westwood, it is easy to see why Moore has made signing a goalkeeper before the start of the new season a top priority. And, obviously being aware of Griffiths from his time at West Brom, targeting the 19-year-old makes sense.

Given their current financial issues, though, it remains to be seen if Wednesday actually have the resources to get such a deal over the line.
