Manchester United will have Eric Bailly available for their clash with Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday.

The centre-back was absent for the shock defeat at the hands of Sheffield United that saw the Red Devils surrender their lead in the Premier League.

Young defender Axel Tuanzebe was forced to fill in but he endured a night to forget at Old Trafford.

He came into the team to take on Chris Wilder’s side but he was nothing short of a disaster at the back as the visitors hit back in style, capitalising on a dreadful defensive performance from the hosts to pick up only their second win of the season and cause a stunning upset in the process.

A lapse in concentration saw the Blades take a surprise lead after Kean Bryan’s well-timed header from John Fleck’s corner and then an unfortunate deflection for Oliver Burke’s goal summed up his frustrations.

It was a far cry from his heroics against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and there’s no doubt he will be bitterly disappointed with his individual performance.

Victor Lindelof has also been used across the backline but is suffering from a recurring back injury.

It leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with his options somewhat limited but the United boss could have Bailly available.

Solskjaer confirmed he is fit for the Premier League fixture at Arsenal after missing the midweek defeat due to a knock.

“He’s travelling to Arsenal, yeah,” said Solskjaer. “Apart from that, we didn’t get any other losses from Sheffield United and the players are all fit and raring to go.”

The timing couldn’t be better for Solskjaer, as Bailly has been a colossal at the back since the start of this season, and put in a tremendous shift against Aston Villa a few weeks ago. Bailly blocked one shot, made one interception and completed six clearances – the most out of any player from either side, as per SofaScore.

On his day, it’s fair to say that the 26-year-old is currently one of the best defenders in the Premier League, providing that he is fully fit, with former United manager Jose Mourinho lavishing praise on his former charge after he played through the pain barrier against Liverpool in 2018.

Bailly is far more experienced than Tuanzebe and is a safe bet to start alongside Harry Maguire in the heart of the defence.

وأردف: “لا يمكن القول إن مروان حمدي تمسك بالفرصة التي حصل عليها مع منتخب مصر، اللاعب لم ينجح في إقناع الجهاز الفني والجماهير ولم يقدم المستوى المنتظر منه”.

Celtic continue to have their hat thrown into the ring as talks of new recruits swirl around the January transfer market. One of their latest links sees them in the running for Preston North End midfielder Ben Pearson as Neil Lennon hopes to bolster his options in the middle of the park.

The Hoops have severely lacked creativity this half of the season and as a result, have been knocked off their perch atop of the Premiership table. Runaway leaders Rangers now dominate the stats and have forced a mammoth 20-point gap between them and the reigning champions.

Additionally, with the likes of Mohamed Elyounoussi only on loan from Southampton and Odsonne Edouard linked to a move away, now is the time for Nick Hammond to prioritise new creative signings.

Would Ben Pearson fit in at Celtic?

Although Pearson isn’t always directly involved in the goals Preston score, he has shown promising statistics in the engine room. According to Sofascore, the 26-year-old’s main strength is his positioning, which will help keep Celtic tight and compact in the heart of the squad.

Pearson also averaged an 88% passing accuracy in his last three appearances, more than Scott Brown’s more disappointing 72%. Indeed, the PNE man has actually been tipped as a candidate to succeed the Hoops captain, who is nearing the end of his current Celtic tenure.

Reports earlier in the week by Sampiy10 claimed Everton are monitoring Christian Luyindama’s uncertain future at Galatasaray, but Marcel Brands would be barking up the entirely wrong tree by pursuing a January transfer of the DR Congo defender.

Everton are in the midst of a challenge for Champions League qualification under Carlo Ancelotti, having enjoyed their best start to a season since the 2013/14 campaign with 32 points after 17 games.

That season’s early efforts returned 34 points by the same stage of the campaign to sit level with Chelsea but in fifth on goal difference, and ultimately fell seven points shy of fourth-placed Arsenal after losing one in every three of their remaining 21 fixtures.

If this term is to end any different for Everton, Brands and Ancelotti ought to be utilising the winter market to strengthen the Italian’s squad with options who can prove the difference. However, Luyindama would more likely than not prove a wasted investment if signed.

Galatasaray are claimed to be open to parting company with Luyindama during the winter market amid claims of interest from Everton and Aston Villa, as the Turkish giants believe his departure will raise funds that can be put to better use elsewhere.

Yet the Turk Telekom Stadium natives will only sell for offers that exceed €10m (£9m), having seen head coach Fatih Terim utilise the 6 ft 3 titan in 65% of his starting line-ups, with Luyindama given opening roles in 11 of his 13 appearances in Super Lig fixtures ahead of Sunday’s derby with Besiktas.

Luyindama began the season as Terim’s first-choice option but lost his place in Cimbom’s backline after a 2-1 win at Sivasspor in November, which has helped Galatasaray to produce a title-chasing season with three points at Vodafone Park this weekend enough to move above their top-of-the-table rivals.

The likelihood of Luyindama moving to Goodison Park and improving Ancelotti’s defensive line would have to be questioned, especially in a season in which the Italian has a realistic chance of securing Everton’s return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2005/06 season.

Luyindama would not be arriving to offer any experience of playing for the best sides in Europe with his time at Galatasaray the highest level the 27-year-old has ever reached, while only ever making 15 outings on the international stage since making his DR Congo debut in 2017.

Yerry Mina may not have lasted long at FC Barcelona before departing the La Liga powerhouse in a £27m deal two-and-a-half years ago, playing just six times across all competitions, yet at least featured for the Camp Nou natives as they clinched the 2017/18 title.

He is now a firm fixture of Ancelotti’s backline, even though the Italian expects the occasional mistake from the 26-year-old, who has started 15 of Everton’s Premier League games, he would find himself hard done by to be displaced by Luyindama.

The Galatasaray man may be a colossus in the air with success in 3.6 duels a game in the Super Lig this term thanks to a 66% success rate, per SofaScore, enough to rank first at Goodison Park for the efforts of Everton’s current central defenders in Premier League games, but is not an unmovable force for opposition forwards.

Luyindama would rank last on the blue side of Stanley Park for successful tackles a game (0.6) if he were to bring his Super Lig performances to the Premier League, and would join Seamus Coleman as the only member of Ancelotti’s backline in having made errors that have led to opponents taking a shot.

Luyindama has also given away one penalty, which only Andre Gomes, Tom Davies and Ben Godfrey – when playing at left-back – have done to date in the English top-flight. Ancelotti further already has Godfrey, Mason Holgate and Michael Keane to contend with Mina for minutes after sanctioning a loan deal for Jarrad Branthwaite to join Blackburn Rovers for the rest of the season.

AND in other news, Everton have no reason not to sell a £7m outcast in the January transfer window.

Nesta segunda-feira, a CBF divulgou as datas e horários das primeiras cinco rodadas do Brasileirão Feminino da Série A1 e confirmou a estreia do São Paulo contra o Cruzeiro, no dia 10 de fevereiro, um domingo, às 19h, com local ainda a definir. A partida terá transmissão pelo Twitter.

Depois de divulgar a tabela básica da competição no fim de 2019, o Tricolor teve sua estreia marcada de forma oficial, em seu primeiro ano na Série A1, após garantir vaga no ano anterior e o título da divisão de acesso.

Em casa, o São Paulo faz sua primeira partida, válida pela segunda rodada, contra o Internacional, no dia 13 de fevereiro, às 19h, no CT de Cotia, que passou recentemente por uma reforma para receber partidas no período noturno. Ainda não está definido, porém a equipe deve mandar alguns jogos fora de Cotia, provavelmente na cidade de São Paulo.

A competição será disputada por 16 clubes, que vão se enfrentar em turno único na primeira fase, com os oito primeiros avançando para a fase seguinte. A partir da segunda etapa, a de quartas de final da competição, os confrontos serão disputados em jogos de ida e volta até a final. Os quatro últimos colocados disputarão a série A2 em 2021.

Por conta da disputa dos Jogos Olímpicos de Tóquio 2020, o torneio nacional terá uma pausa logo após as quartas de final, retornando somente no mês de agosto, com a decisão marcada para os dias 6 e 13 de setembro.

It has been suggested recently that Aymeric Laporte and Pep Guardiola now have a ‘fatally strained’ relationship at Manchester City following the Frenchman’s lack of first-team appearances in recent weeks.

Guardiola has put his faith in a centre-back partnership of John Stones and Ruben Dias for much of this season, which has resulted in City’s defensive form vastly improving, with the Citizens having kept eight clean sheets in their last 10 games in all competitions.

Therefore, if City’s impressive defensive record continues, it seems unlikely that Laporte will be able to force his way back into Guardiola’s starting team, especially with the Spanish manager having spoken publicly about the partnership Stones and Dias are forming at the back, saying:

“Ruben doesn’t make mistakes, he’s always focused. He’s helped us to be stronger, and his understanding with John is amazing. This is what keeps us in the race.”

Laporte has been a fixture in City’s first team since joining from Athletic Bilbao in January 2018, having made 92 appearances for the club, contributing seven goals and three assists.

However, you could argue that despite his impressive performances for the club since signing, he wouldn’t be missed too much if the Citizens did opt to cash in on him in the near future if the reports of his relationship with Guardiola are true.

City have Stones and Dias as first-choice centre-backs, with the likes of Nathan Ake and Eric Garcia available as backups, whilst they have the talented Taylor Harwood-Bellis coming through the academy.

Although Garcia looks likely to join Barcelona in the near future, if City were to bring in a replacement such as the linked David Alaba, it seems as if they would be well covered in the centre-back position.

Of course, Laporte is still an immensely talented player, with an article for These Football Times acknowledging the “world-class” centre-back for his role in City’s first team but if the reports are true and he no longer wants to work under Guardiola, then the club must consider moving him on before he becomes a disruptive influence in the dressing room.
