Newcastle: Bruce must drop Clark vs Leeds

After suffering a disappointing defeat at the hands of Manchester United last week, Newcastle United will be hoping to finally get their Premier League campaign on track when they take on Leeds United on Friday night.

Steve Bruce’s side currently lie 19th in the top-flight after a winless start, tonight facing a Leeds side who are also struggling at the start of this new season and still in search of their first win.

The Magpies boss will surely have some big calls to make after the torrid nature in which they threw away a 1-1 draw into a 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford, and one man who will be sweating on his place is Ciaran Clark.

The Republic of Ireland international was hardly alone in enduring a nightmare afternoon against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, but his mistakes last week were costly’ and when you think of the kind high-pressing, high-intensity side that Leeds are, those errors could rear their ugly head once again.

As per Sofascore, he lost both of the duels in which he was involved, made no tackles whatsoever and was dribbled past once as Cristiano Ronaldo and co ran riot in the second half.

What will also be worrying is that he looked shaky on the ball too, conceding possession on seven occasions, the most of any Magpies defender aside from Matt Ritchie, who should be noted played as more of a wing-back. He also found his mark with just one of his four attempted long balls.

Writing for The Shields Gazette and The Chronicle respectively, both Miles Starforth and Lee Ryder were critical of Clark’s second-half performance in particular, giving him a measly five and four in their post-match player ratings.

Given the nature of how Marcelo Bielsa’s side look to press from the front and put players under pressure when on the ball, Clark might just well be a liability once again – as per WhoScored, his 77.8% pass accuracy this season is worse than the likes of Federico Fernandez, Jamaal Lascelles and Isaac Hayden among others.

If Clark plays, then there’s every chance Leeds will look to test both his ability on the ball and his questionable positioning, both of which let him down against Manchester United last week and could cost the Magpies once again.

The £35k-a-week earning ace simply has to be dropped tonight when the Whites come to town.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are interested in this Championship star, he’s better than Almiron…

Warner shows all the right moves in risky business

It wasn’t hysterical every time David Warner walked the streets, but it was A-list chaos at the airport and the team hotel

For a day Australia’s newest opener experienced life as a movie hero from Warner Bros instead of a member of the Warner family from Sydney’s Matraville. It wasn’t hysterical every time David walked the streets and he didn’t seem to get a marriage proposal – even 89 from 43 balls can’t get you a wife that easily in Brisbane – but it was A-list chaos at the airport and team hotel. In Melbourne he was swamped by cameras as he tried to leave the city where the night before he set up Australia’s 52-run Twenty20 victory over South Africa. After landing in Brisbane he was squeezed out a side door in an attempt to escape the attention that shadowed a 22-year-old who is still hoping to make his first-class debut for New South Wales. It was ideal work experience for life with the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League, where he will head in April for more strange happenings in the game’s newest genre. Now Twenty20 seems to turn people mad outside the subcontinent as well. In the past 24 hours in Australia there have been three shark attacks, a cyclone and a Golden Globe for the late Heath Ledger in the Warner Bros movie The Dark Knight. And David Warner. He is part of the Warner Siblings group that grew up playing club cricket for Eastern Suburbs, and has beaten most of his brother Steve’s junior records. Warner is like the tiny knight who everyone feels like teasing until he lances you with a toothpick, which suddenly feels like a mace.On the opening night of the limited-overs season he graduated from fringe-festival talent to Twenty20 blockbuster with a boundary-breaking performance. He cleared more fences than Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet while heaving six sixes. There were two in a row from his first looks at Dale Steyn and then a monster strike over midwicket off Jacques Kallis that almost landed in the second tier of the grandstand. Russell Crowe can’t throw phones with power like that.At 170cm Warner is about the same height as Tom Cruise, without the need for high heels to push him closer to the sky. At the moment he is trying for both feet on the ground. It can’t be easy. Next week he will go back to New South Wales and aim to play his maiden Sheffield Shield game. Already this could be the best week of his life, or stage one in a major production. In two years he might be a forgotten one-off hero or own the top billing for the next generation. So much for a gentle integration into the national set-up.There was no time after the game for celebratory drinks, but Warner still looked dazed as he stood in the team hotel the following afternoon. He was unshaven and scruffy in the way normal 22-year-olds are when they have chosen a life outside the office. Replies were mumbled to a set of rapid-fire questions. Can you score on the offside as well as the legside?”
“If they’re going to plant a ball outside off, I prefer the ball there more than anything.”
Where do you get your power from?
“It’s all to do with timing. I’m a short bloke, so I try to crunch out some weights here and there.”
Has it been a whirwind?
“Massively, it’s still a dream, I haven’t woken up.”
Do you want to play Test cricket?
“It’s the ultimate goal. As a kid you grow up wanting a baggy green. The baggy blue [for New South Wales] has got to come first.”
Do you feel pigeon-holed as a Twenty20 player?
“In a way, yeah, time will tell. I might get a [Sheffield Shield] game this year, I might not.
A week ago he was jumping up and down in a pool after learning he had been picked for Australia and was considering asking his new team-mates for autographs. Over the past day a few of them have taken him aside to counsel him on his dramatic success, but none of the other guys had things happen to them this quickly. Even his idols Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne had to wait years for this sort of attention. The instant fame did not come with a full-time personal assistant and Warner had to leave the hotel to go and buy his own sushi – through the bag it seemed not to include egg whites and was light on the wasabi. When he placed the package on the carpet nobody tried to steal it to stick on eBay. He might not be so lucky if he backs up his Melbourne thrashing with more fireworks in Brisbane on Tuesday. The poor guy.

Jaffer leads strong West Zone batting line-up

Wasim Jaffer has been named the captain of the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy. Jaffer, who led Mumbai to their 38th Ranji Trophy title, heads a formidable line-up, consisting of some of the leading performers this season.Gujarat offspinner Mohnish Parmar has been not considered for selection after recent tests on his bowling action, conducted at the Australian Institute of Sports in Canberra, turned out unfavourable. Parmar told the he had not been informed about the verdict of the tests in Australia, with officials telling him all was fine. “My life and my livelihood depend on cricket and one report can destroy all that,” he said. “I really thought I had a chance of making it to the Indian team especially when Harbhajan got injured. There is no other off-spinner in the country who has taken as many wickets in the domestic season as I have. I guess that AIS report has done me in.”Parmar is the leading wicket-taker in first-class games in the country this season, with 52 wickets in 11 games at 19.42, including 41 at 19.53 apiece in the Ranji Trophy – one less the best of 42 taken by Dhawal Kulkarni and Ravindra Jadeja. He had been picked for the India A team and the Challenger Trophy earlier in the season. Parmar has corrected his action in the past, after the ICC asked the BCCI to conduct a review following the Under-19 World Cup in 2006.Mumbai’s Ramesh Powar and Baroda’s Rajesh Pawar are the spinners in the 15-man squad. Powar, an offspinner, took 34 wickets in nine games at 26.14, and played a key role in Mumbai’s success, and the left-arm spinner Pawar had 20 wickets from his six games at 28.80.Kulkarni, Sidharth Trivedi, Samad Fallah and Ajitesh Argal are the other specialist bowlers in the squad. The side’s strongest suit though is its batting, with Jaffer, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara – the top three run-getters in the Ranji Trophy this season – in its ranks. They will be joined by two other strong performers in Kedar Jadhav and Bhavik Thakkar – both scored over 600 and averaged over 70 in the Ranji Trophy. Parthiv Patel, the team’s vice-captain, will keep wicket.West Zone’s first match is the semi-final against East Zone at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, which starts on January 29.West Zone squad: Wasim Jaffer (capt), Parthiv Patel (wk), Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Kedar Jadhav, Ajay Shrikhande, Bhavik Thakkar, Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Sidharth Trivedi, Samad Fallah, Ramesh Powar, Rajesh Pawar, Azharuddin Bilakhia and Ajitesh Argal.

Rangers transfer claim on Kamara

Glasgow Rangers have now been backed to lose Glen Kamara by Frank McAvennie, despite him signing a new deal at Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Kamara deal

Steven Gerrard’s team confirmed on Wednesday that Kamara has signed a new contract, keeping him with the Light Blues until 2025.

However, sources from Ibrox have told Football Insider that the Gers have protected the value of the central midfield player with the new deal, but there is an agreement in place that he will be allowed to leave at a certain price.

The Latest: McAvennie on Kamara

Speaking to Football Insider, former Scottish Premiership striker now pundit McAvennie has now claimed that Kamara will still go in next summer’s transfer window despite his new contract:

“All this means is whoever buys him has to pay more money.

“That’s all it means. It makes no difference to whether he will stay or go. I’m sure he will go, maybe not in the winter, next summer.

“Rangers have done well to tie him down and Kamara is a class act for letting them do that.

“But in Scottish football, if the right money comes in, the player will go. Nothing has changed.

“Unfortunately that’s the way. Kamara is one of the better players and the Rangers fans will be delighted.

“He doesn’t do much wrong, the boy. It’s a great move by the club but it makes no difference to whether he stays or goes.”

The Verdict: Inevitable

Unfortunately for RFC fans, it is inevitable that Kamara will go eventually, especially if a club from the Premier League come calling.

Football Insider reported earlier this month that Arsenal made a move to try and re-sign him during the summer, and a number of other sides in the English top flight were interested in his signature.

At 25 years of age, Kamara does not have many big moves left in his career, and the chance to play in the Premier League may be too tempting to turn down.

Nonetheless, Rangers must keep hold of him for as long as they possibly can, and when the time comes, the new deal means that they can demand a reasonable transfer fee.
