Kent coach Graham Ford has withdrawn his name from the shortlist of candidates for the top England role because of the delay in making an appointment.”I thought it would be sorted out a lot quicker than it has been,” Ford, who will continue coaching Kent, told the . “I was invited to go on the shortlist and told they wanted to interview me for the job. But I withdrew my name two days ago.Ford was of the opinion that the new England coach should have enough time to settle in before an important summer. “In my view the Ashes series is such an important one that you need a proper run at it. Duncan Fletcher [the former England coach who is now working with the South Africa team] told me that he had a year or more to prepare for the Ashes series in 2005. But there are a number of factors. I like things to be done properly and I am already well into my preparations with Kent for the new season.”It was reported earlier that the ECB’s shortlist was believed to include current England coach Andy Flower, South Africa coach Mickey Arthur, former Indian mentor John Wright and Ford. Arthur, however, said that he would “like to honour his commitment” to South Africa until the 2011 World Cup. Ford’s withdrawal is likely to make Flower, who was appointed temporarily after Peter Moores was sacked in January, the favourite for the job even though England struggled under him on the ongoing tour of West Indies.Flower, however, had the backing of England captain Andrew Strauss. “We’ve worked very well together so it would be fantastic to continue what we’ve started,” Strauss told .”A new coach would probably have his own ideas and it’s a case of compromising and making sure between you, you are going in the right direction. Now is not a time for thinking about that too much, but Andy is a strong candidate and there is a good chance that England will continue as they are but that remains to be seen in the coming weeks.”

Subcontinent countries must unite to fight terror – Intikhab

Intikhab Alam has said the IPL’s move to South Africa did not augur well for the future of international cricket in the subcontinent

Intikhab Alam, the Pakistan coach, has said the IPL’s move to South Africa, to avoid a clash with India’s general elections which could have turned into a security nightmare for the national government, did not augur well for the future of international cricket in the subcontinent.Intikhab said the only solution to saving the game in the subcontinent was for all South Asian Test-playing nations to unite and counter terrorism. “Things can change quickly in the region and I expect an improvement in security in the near future,” Intikhab told Pakistan’s . “And with a visible change, hopefully cricket will return to the region soon.”Javed Miandad, the former Pakistan captain, echoed Intikhab’s sentiments. “After the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore obviously Pakistan cricket has been hurt badly,” Miandad told PTI. “I think the Asian nations need to sit down together and come up with a joint strategy to provide security to touring teams that is acceptable to the ICC and its member nations. I just feel that India has to play a lead role in ensuring security issues don’t kill the sport in the region.”But Miandad felt the IPL’s move would not affect future tours in India since it was the biggest commercial market for the sport. “I don’t think the ICC or its member countries can afford to not to play in that country for any reason. There is a lot of money involved.”

Maguire and Rashford could feature for MUFC

Manchester United have received a double injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Leicester City this afternoon after it was revealed that both Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford are progressing well in their respective recoveries.

What’s the word?

Rashford is yet to feature for the Red Devils this season after undergoing surgery for a persistent shoulder injury over the summer following his exploits for England in Euro 2020, while Maguire missed United’s 1-1 draw with Everton last time out after picking up a calf problem.

However, it seems as though the English duo could return to action at the King Power Stadium after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave a positive update on their fitness levels.

“Harry’s just joined us on the grass this morning, that’s the first time he’s been on the grass. Amad: first time on the grass today as well. So we look quite strong,” the Norwegian said in Friday’s press conference.

The United boss continued: “He’s (Rashford) in the squad, yes. If he’s going to start or not, I can’t tell you now, because it wouldn’t be right. He’s worked really hard throughout the whole lay-off. He’s been really bright this week and had a 60-minute involvement in a behind-closed-doors game last week, so he’s fit and raring to go.”

However, it wasn’t all good news for United on the availability front as Solskjaer confirmed that South American pair Edinson Cavani and Fred will be unavailable for selection.

“With regards to Fred and Edinson, they played a full game this morning, 1.30 am kick-off. So we’re not counting on them,” the 48-year-old stated.

“We have to give them time to rest and recover. You have to. They played well; that’s the good thing for us, not injured, but hopefully, they can be involved in midweek in the Champions League.”

Solskjaer will be delighted

News that Maguire and Rashford could play some part against Leicester will have Solskjaer feeling delighted ahead of what’s set to be a tricky encounter.

Only Bruno Fernandes topped the 23-year-old’s Premier League tallies of 11 goals and nine assists respectively last term, while none of his teammates could match his average of 2.2 dribbles per league game, as per WhoScored.

Maguire was also instrumental to the Old Trafford outfit’s fortunes last term, captaining the 20-time English champions in all 34 of his league starts and duly highlighting his importance to the side. Nobody won more headers per game than his four, while only one player exceeded his match average of 1.8 interceptions, as per WhoScored, emphasising the former Foxes’ defenders value to the United squad.

It seems unlikely that either of them will start in today’s fixture, but even having them in the matchday squad will be a welcome boost for Solskjaer’s stuttering charges.

Strategic time-out to be reviewed after tournament

Lalit Modi has said that the mid-innings strategic time-out, which has come in for widespread criticism, would be reviewed at the end of the season

Cricinfo staff25-Apr-2009Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, has said that the mid-innings strategic time-out, which has come in for widespread criticism, would be reviewed at the end of the season.Sachin Tendulkar had said the seven-and-a-half minute interval, introduced in this year’s tournament, hampered a team’s momentum, and others including Kings XI Punjab coach Tom Moody and Chennai Super Kings head of cricket operations VB Chandrasekhar had also voiced their disapproval.”I neither agree nor disagree [with the criticism] … this is an innovation, an experiment we are trying this year,” Modi wrote in his blog on the IPL’s official website. “And as with all innovations, there are probably good points to this, and also bad points – but there will be time to evaluate those.”When the league is over, the last ball has been bowled here in South Africa and a winner has been crowned, our real work will begin to fine tune the IPL for improvements next year.”On the basis of an exhaustive review, we will be able to arrive at some conclusions on what has worked, what hasn’t worked; we will be able to decide what needs to be changed, or fine-tuned, or scrapped altogether.”Modi also defended the interruption in play, writing that “such practices are normal in the world of sport be it on the Grid-Iron or the basketball courts of the NBA.”Modi had earlier said the tactical time-out was designed to allow teams to discuss strategy instead of having to spend time on it during the course of the game, and hence minimise match-time delays.

Saints: Elyounoussi failed vs Leeds

It was an important result for Southampton on Saturday where they managed to secure their first league win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Leeds United.

A second-half goal from Armando Broja was enough to secure the three points for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, putting them in 15th place in the league table with seven points prior to Sunday’s fixtures.

Despite the victory, there was one player that was involved against Leeds that failed to impress.

The player in question was Saints winger Mohamed Elyounoussi, who started the game against Marcelo Bielsa’s side before being taken off and replaced by Nathan Tella late on in the match.

During his time on the pitch, Elyounoussi failed to even have one shot on target while he was also unable to provide one accurate cross or long ball.

His dismal afternoon was capped off by a miss at the back post where he was unable to get his head to what would have been a simple tap in. What made matters worse was the fact he lost possession on 19 occasions and won just ten out of the 21 duels he was involved in. That ultimately earned him a rather disappointing overall match rating of 6.3/10, making him the lowest-rated Southampton player on the day that started the match, according to SofaScore.

Given how Elyounoussi, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £60k-per-week according to Spotrac, was taken out of the starting XI in Southampton’s 3-1 defeat against Chelsea, we feel as though the winger failed to repay the faith that Hasenhuttl showed in him to put him back in the starting XI against Leeds.

Southampton signed Elyounoussi back in the 2018 summer transfer window from FC Basel before sending him out on loan to Scottish club Celtic in the next summer window.

Overall, the 27-year-old, who is currently valued at £10.8m according to Transfermarkt, has made just 26 appearances for Hasenhuttl’s side, scoring four goals and providing two assists along the way.

During his time at Celtic, Elyounoussi was once described as being a “passenger” by Hoops podcaster Paul John Dykes, which is how we feel he was like in the game against Leeds.

Moving forward, if Hasenhuttl decides to stick with Elyounoussi in the starting XI for their upcoming Premier League clash against Burnley next weekend, the winger will have to put in a solid display to show that he is worthy of being a regular starter for the club, or else he could find himself back on the bench, potentially for an extended period of time.

Wolves winger Neto could return in January

Wolves winger Pedro Neto could make his long-awaited injury return at some point in January, according to manager Bruno Lage.

The Lowdown: Neto missing for months

The young Portuguese star hasn’t featured at all yet this season, as he continues to recover from a fractured kneecap suffered back in April.

Neto had arguably been Wolves’ standout player in the 2020/21 campaign prior to that setback, scoring five goals and registering six assists in the Premier League.

It appears as though his return is edging closer all the time, however, acting as a boost for all concerned.

The Latest: Lage gives injury update

Speaking in his pre-Everton press conference on Friday [via The Athletic], Lage confirmed that he expects Neto to return to first-team action in mid-January, after undergoing his own pre-season schedule:

“The good news is everything is OK with his injury. Now he will start to work harder than he has.

“I think maybe he’ll start with the team in one more month. After he’ll need to do a normal pre-season, for two or three weeks, to work and be fit to play in this competition.

“Maybe in the middle of January we’ll have him in the stadium to start to play with us. He can work harder now, this is the good news.”

The Verdict: Play the long game

Any Wolves fan is going to be desperate to see Neto back on the pitch as soon as possible, but it is vital that the club handle him with care.

Rushing him back too soon could end up having dire consequences further down the line, so an element of caution is required with a player so young and full of potential.

Having Neto back from injury will feel like an almighty boost, though – pundit Adrian Clarke has described him as ‘brilliant’ – adding quality and goal threat to a team who are already thriving at the moment, grabbing ten points from their last four games.

In other news, Tim Spiers has delivered a key Wolves injury update. Read more here.
