Tottenham Hotspur: Paratici could sell Bergwijn in January

According to Tottenham insider John Wenham (via Football Insider), Steven Bergwijn could leave Spurs in January as Fabio Paratici lays the groundwork for an unprecedented transfer spending spree.

The Lowdown: Busy January window

Antonio Conte is said to be pushing for an overhaul of the club’s squad through the arrival of multiple signings, after identifying positions that will need strengthening, such as centre back. This would also involve players leaving the club, in order to free up funds.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Bergwijn has only made seven appearances in the Premier League this season. Disappointingly, he has failed to score in every one of these matches and has only been able to add one assist to his record.

Even from a possession perspective, the Dutchman averages just 11.7 passes per game – the fourth lowest of any Spurs player to feature in the league this season.

The Latest: Bergwijn could leave in January

Speaking to Football Insider, Spurs insider Wenham has named Alli, Winks, Doherty, and Bergwijn as four prime candidates to leave the club in the January transfer window. He claimed that “the homegrown issue will play a big role in this”, saying:

“I would expect one of Dele Alli or Harry Winks so go, not both. That’s where the homegrown issue comes into play.

“Matt Doherty is another player who could go, either on a permanent deal or out on loan.”

He then continued onto Bergwijn, stating: “Other than that, I’m not sure. If an attractive offer came in for Steven Bergwijn I think we would let him go.

“There has been increased talk over the last few weeks about Ajax being interested in him.

“That would be an easy deal to do as we aren’t using wingers at the moment and he isn’t homegrown.”

The Verdict: A confusing, but possible sale

Due to the homegrown issue, this sale could well be very possible. If Spurs truly want to challenge the top four, they will need to bring in some major signings – meaning fringe players, like Bergwijn, may be on the way.

However, this still comes as a surprise. Despite not using wingers at the moment, the attacker provides a different option for Conte to utilise, and is still a young, pacy direct player with plenty of potential to fulfil – hardly the sort of talent you want to give up on too soon.

The manager has also publicly praised Bergwijn as a ‘quality’ player who he will look to use in multiple positions (Football Oranje), so it seems strange that he would allow him to leave the club, even if Paratici is the driving force behind it.

West Ham: Fans flock to Eden Hazard news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham fans have erupted over the recent news involving Real Madrid star Eden Hazard.

As per the Sunday Mirror (print edition 05/12/2021, page 70), via Hammers News, West Ham are eyeing a shock move for Belgian attacker Eden Hazard. It is claimed that Hammers boss David Moyes is interested in bringing the 30-year-old back to the Premier League, after an unsuccessful stint at Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The attacker bagged 110 goals and 92 assists in 352 games for Chelsea, before leaving for Madrid in a deal worth £103.5m.

However, Hazard has not been able to replicate this form in LaLiga. He has scored just five times and has made 9 assists in 54 appearances for the club.

Should West Ham sign Hazard?

As reported in the Sunday Mirror and shared on Twitter by @WestHamViews_, exciting news for Hammers fans has emerged as international star Hazard is reportedly being eyed for a potential transfer to the London Stadium. It is understood that West Ham would have to pay just £21m in order to sign the attacker in January.

Despite under-performing for the Spanish outfit, Hazard was a fan favourite for the Blues during his seven season stay in the Premier League. With seemingly limited game time on offer in Madrid, his affinity with the English league could entice the Belgian back to the capital.

As a result of these astonishing claims, many Hammers fans have been reacting to the news in disbelief on Twitter.

Cook defends England batsmen

Loots Bosman fell one blow short of recording only the second century in Twenty20 internationals, and Graeme Smith made a statement of his own by hammering 88 from 44 balls, as South Africa responded to their defeat in Friday’s first T20I at the Wanderers

Alastair Cook defended the decision not to change England’s batting order in response to South Africa’s mammoth 241 for 6. England limped to an 84-run defeat with Cook, the stand-in captain, sharing an opening stand of 20 from 18 balls with Joe Denly.Given the success of Eoin Morgan and Jonathan Trott in the first match, alongside the return of Kevin Pietersen, England had attacking options for the top-order, but Cook preferred the original line-up.”There were thoughts of it, but we decided not to go with that,” he said. “We got 200 the other day playing with that order, so we decided to stick with it. Unfortunately the big hits, we didn’t hit them as cleanly as they did. In hindsight, we could have maybe changed it, but whether it would have changed the result I don’t know, because 240 is a lot of runs.”Cook praised his opposing batsmen and suggested England weren’t skilful enough to match them on the day. “It was not the result we wanted, they took the game away from us from the fourth or fifth over and from then on we were behind the eight-ball. I’m not sure if anyone has chased 240, we had the belief but we didn’t have the skills today.”It’s always tough when you go round the park like that, it was great hitting and you have to give credit to the way they played. You can set a field but if you don’t put the ball in the right place the margin on that wicket was very small.”Mickey Arthur, the South African coach, questioned England’s approach and argued his side can take more out of the shared series than the tourists can. “I must say I was very surprised they didn’t do that [change the order]. I thought they would certainly have used Eoin Morgan and Jonathan Trott at the top of the order with KP batting three.”I think the emphatic way in which we won, I guess we come out of the weekend I think far better than England have. That’s if it does count for anything down the line because we go into a different format [50-over one-day internationals]. But we probably do take a little more from it. I think we’re probably a little more settled and a little more unpredictable.”

Esperamos conseguir as vitórias.

Arsenal fans slam Xhaka vs Southampton

Many Arsenal fans were left slamming the display of Granit Xhaka despite their win at home to Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

It was a comfortable game in the end for Mikel Arteta’s team at the Emirates Stadium despite a shaky start, with goals from Alex Lacazette and Martin Odegaard putting them 2-0 up at half-time, before Gabriel added a third in the second half.

Despite the win, a lot of Gunners supporters were not happy with Xhaka’s performance, as he lost out on three of his duels, and also failed to record a single clearance, tackle or key pass in the match (SofaScore).

The Switzerland international also gave the ball away on no fewer than on 14 separate occasions, in what was a frustrating afternoon for him individually.

Series in sight for improving England

The scoreline says the series is all-square, but after such a convincing 112-run victory at Cape Town South Africa are now the side with the momentum

The Preview by Andrew Miller03-Dec-2009Match facts Friday, December 4, 2009

Big pictureSomewhat astonishingly, England stand on the verge of their first ODI series victory in South Africa, and their second in consecutive rubbers against Graeme Smith’s men following their 4-0 victory at home in 2008. After three fluctuating performances and a washout at the Wanderers, they have emerged with a 2-1 series lead – a scoreline that they have reached on merit thanks to two dominant performances at Centurion and Port Elizabeth. The fact that those games were punctuated by a record-breaking thumping at Newlands merely underlines the ongoing battle for consistency that is forever England’s weakness.Nevertheless, for the first time in a long time, England have displayed the makings of an impressive one-day outfit. Andrew Strauss’s personal form and tactical acumen make it hard to imagine a world in which he was exiled from the ODI set-up for two years, as was the case from the 2007 World Cup onwards. Eoin Morgan and Jonathan Trott have performed like instant veterans, while the veteran, Paul Collingwood, has rediscovered some of his finest form, with both bat and ball. The young guns, Luke Wright and Tim Bresnan, have started to move on from being merely promising, and all that remains is for Kevin Pietersen to rediscover his touch, and the renaissance will be complete. Or at least until their next Cape Town-esque relapse.South Africa, on the other hand, have got a few issues to resolve. Whereas England have had plenty practice at moulding a side in which Andrew Flintoff makes cameo appearances, the loss of Jacques Kallis has proven stupendously hard to overcome. At Newlands, the decision to trust five specialist batsmen paid handsome dividends when Smith won the toss and AB de Villiers blazed a 75-ball century; but at Port Elizabeth, the middle-order looked threadbare to say the least once James Anderson started to turn the screw. On the plus side, the addition of Morne Morkel has provided an extra layer of menace to South Africa’s attack, particularly when coming round the wicket to England’s left-handers, but the likely loss of Dale Steyn to a hamstring strain will undermine their bid for a share of the series. Nothing, however, could undermine it as much as the Durban weather, which has been abysmal all week. A washout would suffice for England – and provide a neat symmetry to the results column – but Strauss wants more than that. “We’re fully expecting to play tomorrow,” he said, “and if we do we will make sure we’re at the races and put South Africa under pressure again.”Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)
South Africa – LWLWW
England – WLWLLTeam newsSouth Africa’s dilemma is whether to stick or twist … do they recall Herschelle Gibbs to the middle order in an admission that their batting is vulnerable, or do they trust Ryan McLaren to knuckle down at No. 7 and put his consecutive ducks to the back of his mind? Given that Steyn’s injury leaves them lacking in firepower, the likelihood is a reprieve for McLaren, whose medium-pacers have had their moments in the series, and a silent prayer that de Villiers comes as good as he did at Newlands.South Africa (possible) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 AB de Villiers, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Alviro Petersen, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Johan Botha, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Charl LangeveldtNo such concerns for England, who have a settled first XI for arguably the first time since the 1992 World Cup final (when even then they had to decide between Allan Lamb and Robin Smith). James Anderson reported a knee injury in the build-up to the Port Elizabeth match, but figures of 5 for 23 in ten overs suggest he shook it off pretty effectively, meaning Graham Onions will once again be left carrying the drinks.England (possible) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Jonathan Trott, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Luke Wright, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Tim Bresnan, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 James Anderson.Watch out forKevin Pietersen needs a score to settle him down, because it’s not so much nerves as nervous energy that has been his problem so far in the tour. After a four-month lay-off, KP has been visibly rushing to pick up where he left off, never more so than at Port Elizabeth, when he could have been dismissed twice in a six-ball innings. More haste, less speed is the motto that springs to mind. If he allows himself a little longer to regain his timing, the entire squad could find themselves reaping the benefits as the Test series approaches. It ought not to be a coincidence, but such is the hold that Graeme Smith has over his team these days, that his rare failure at Port Elizabeth – lbw for 2 – was the cue for South Africa to crumble to an ignominious defeat. Conversely, when his agenda-setting strokeplay has come off – never more so than during his 44-ball 88 in the second Twenty20 at Centurion – there’s been no stopping the momentum he generates. If, as could happen amid the showers, the Durban game becomes a rain-reduced sprint, his 20-over prowess could well come to the fore again.Stats and trivia South Africa’s overall record in ODIs against England since 2008 now reads seven defeats and a solitary win in eight completed games, which is their worst clutch of results since the two teams first met in 1992 Ominously, the last ODI match that England played in Durban, in 2005, was a washout. The match was abandoned with England uncomfortably placed on 7 for 2, chasing 213. Quotes””We really want to come and win this series 3-1. When you start thinking about rain and things like that, it is going to affect your preparation.”
.”For us the priority is the Test series and we would never compromise Dale’s chances of being 100% fit for the first Test [at Centurion] by playing him on Friday.”
Mickey Arthur hasn’t abandoned the ODIs entirely, but it’s clear he’s already shifting his focus.

Postecoglou must unleash Moffat

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side will undoubtedly be heading into Wednesday night’s Premiership fixture against St. Mirren in fine spirits, having just won the 56-year-old manager his first trophy as the Bhoys boss – defeating Hibernian 2-1 at Hampden Park in the League Cup final on Sunday afternoon.

However, while Kyogo Furuhashi and Mikey Johnston both returned from injury to play a part in the cup final last weekend, Postecoglou looks as if he will still be without the services of Jota, James Forrest, Giorgos Giakoumakis, Albian Ajeti and the newly injured David Turnbull for the trip to St. Mirren Park tomorrow evening – all of whom appear to be continued absences due to various knocks.

Although, with the games coming thick and fast for Celtic at present, a fixture against the team who currently sit ninth in the Premiership table may not be the worst time to rest a couple of the Hoops’ more regular starters, while simultaneously presenting the 56-year-old Bhoys boss with the opportunity to field a number of his exciting up and coming youth prospects – arguably the most talented of whom is 19-year-old, Owen Moffat.

Postecoglou must unleash Moffat

Having been brought on in both the 2-1 Premiership win over Ross County and the 2-1 League Cup final victory over Hibs last week, the teenage left-winger is undoubtedly a player who will be pushing for a starting spot in Postecoglou’s side over the coming weeks.

And, considering how impressive the youngster has been for Celtic’s B team side so far this season, it would very much appear as if Moffat is worthy of a shot from the off against St. Mirren on Wednesday evening.

Indeed, the forward is the reserve side’s top goalscorer in the Scottish Lowland League, having bagged 11 times in the division already this season – five more than any of his teammates.

As a result of this form, as well as Celtic’s crippling injury list, Postecoglou called the 19-year-old up to first-team training last week, and the 56-year-old appears to be incredibly impressed with the way the youngster has performed at Lennoxtown.

Speaking about Moffat, the Bhoys boss said: “Life is about opportunity. Not just being in the right place at the right time, but also being ready for it. Moff probably wasn’t in the calculations two weeks ago, but we just had so many injuries and we brought him into training and he has looked bright.

“We brought him on the other night and he looked good. That, to me, is a lesson for every player out there. You have to be ready for that opportunity.”

And, although the Hoops’ injury list has been slighted shortened by the return of both Kyogo and Johnston, should Postecoglou wish to keep as many of his first-team players as possible fit over the coming weeks, he must start rotating his squad more efficiently – leading us to believe that the Greek-Australian coach simply must start Moffat against St. Mirren tomorrow night.
