New format, player retention clause worry franchises

Franchises in the IPL believe that the league’s new format and the player retention clause take away their control over their players and also affect their bottom lines

Tariq Engineer07-Sep-2010

Barring big-ticket names like Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni, most players are likely to return to the auction pool•Indian Premier League

Franchises in the IPL believe that the league’s new format and the player retention clause take away their control over their players and also affect their bottom lines. At least three IPL franchises say the new regulations devised by the BCCI are needlessly complicated.”New IPL rules a bit confusing,” Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan wrote on the micro-blogging website Twitter.”Two new teams added (good). All players should go into pool to make it fair for everyone. Simple and straight.”The new rules governing player retention allow a team to keep up to four players but at a steep price. The first player retained will cost a team $1.8 million against the salary cap of $9 million, regardless of the amount the player is actually paid. The second player will cost $1.3 million, the third $900,000 and the fourth $500,000.A team official told ESPNcricinfo, this rule suited a franchise only if it owned a player worth the $1.3m-1.8m bracket. “That person needs to win you at least five or six games and three IPL seasons have taught us that there is no one such player to be found.” Using all four retention options will mean that a franchise will have only $4.5m to spend on 26 other players. The handful of players who may come into the $1.8m bracket, an official said, would be big-ticket names like Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni. A franchise official said the next group of players who could find themselves up for retention would be “Kieron Pollard, Suresh Raina and maybe Virender Sehwag but after that, I can’t see anyone else”.The high cost of keeping a player effectively means most players will be part of November’s auction. An official said, “Given the amount of money that you have to commit to retention, practically it will be difficult for teams to retain players”.While the schedule of 74 games ensures the franchises will play a minimum of 14 games, the same as in previous years, the addition of two new teams means each team gets a smaller share of the central revenue. “The business revenue models were calculated on the extra games,” another team official said and thought that the new clauses had, for the franchises, made the IPL “a loss-making proposition”.The new rule under which all IPL player contracts can only be vetted by the BCCI has also come in for criticism with another franchise official saying, “This is a very player-centric rule and it benefits the player more than the franchise. So what leverage do franchises have with them?” The new rule had sent out a message from the BCCI to the franchises, “It is clear the BCCI understands that their biggest assets are the players and not the franchises.”With the players now out of their control, the only budgetary elements directly under the control of the franchises would be gate revenues, merchandising and sponsorships.

Crystal Palace: Mateta must start vs Leeds

Crystal Palace host Leeds United this evening as they look to climb the Premier League table with just six matches to go whilst can all but secure their safety with a victory.

The Eagles followed up their Wembley heartbreak in the FA Cup semi-final with a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United last Wednesday night, with manager Patrick Vieira making changes to his team.

Now though, after a five-day break, the Frenchman must resort back to his best possible lineup, with striker Jean-Philippe Mateta leading the line.

On the chalkboard

Mateta was rested in the North East on Wednesday, with out-of-favour Odsonne Edouard getting the nod to start up front against the Magpies.

The Frenchman struggled to make an impact at St.James’ Park and hasn’t found the back of the net for Palace since late January.

As for his fellow countryman, Mateta has been the Eagles’ best striker since the turn of the year, scoring five goals and assisting one in 2022.

The 24-year-old’s form has ironically correlated with his loan move from Bundesliga outfit FC Mainz being made permanent in the January transfer window.

Vieira has chopped and changed his strikers this season, with no centre forward finding consistent form in front of goal that rivals that of top scorer Wilfried Zaha, as well as the impressive Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher.

The long-term Palace servant has enjoyed his best-ever season in front of goal for the Eagles this term, scoring 12 times across all competitions whilst Gallagher is the south London outfit’s second-top-scorer with eight strikes.

With Zaha in support, Mateta can find his best form, with the forward finally starting to find comfort in the red and blue of Crystal Palace after a shaky start to life in England.

The £30k-per-week striker was signed on a season-and-a-half loan from Mainz in January 2021, with former Palace boss Roy Hodgson handing the Frenchman just seven league appearances.

Although, the 24-year-old did instantly boost his popularity amongst the Selhurst Park faithful, netting the first goal in a dramatic 2-1 win against arch-rivals Brighton.

This season, the forward was shut out almost completely, playing just 61 minutes of the Eagles’ first 17 league matches and sometimes failed to even make a matchday squad.

However, once handed his chance at the back end of December, Mateta, who was labelled as “brilliant” by teammate Will Hughes earlier this term, grabbed it with both hands and is now the south London side’s most in form striker and thus must be unleashed against Leeds.

Copeland builds on natural instincts

Trent Copeland was a wicketkeeper-batsman until five years ago as he juggled the roles in St George’s third grade side

Trent Copeland was a wicketkeeper-batsman until five years ago as he juggled the roles in St George’s third grade side. Last season he was the bowling find of the domestic summer after storming to 35 wickets in his first five Sheffield Shield games for New South Wales. As Copeland, 24, prepared for his second campaign as a first-class paceman, his initial aim was to get a game. During the winter that seemed like a particularly tough assignment, but the Blues start the season with Nathan Bracken and Josh Hazlewood injured, Brett Lee focussing on limited-overs games, and Doug Bollinger, Mitchell Starc and Shane Watson in India with the Test outfit. That leaves Copeland with an early chance to impress in Monday’s Sheffield Shield fixture against South Australia.”It was beyond my wildest expectations,” he told ESPNcricinfo of his debut summer. “I never expected to play for New South Wales last year, let alone do so well. I was over the moon. Looking forward, if I can do half as well as that for the rest of my career I’ll be pretty happy.”The late start to bowling came because Copeland was sick of breaking fingers while keeping and didn’t want the injuries to hurt his batting. He started grabbing the ball in the nets, helped the team to a third-grade trophy and the following season was a fixture in the firsts. Now his worries are hamstring strains and stress fractures.”If you look back now it’s a great story, but to me it’s been a natural progression,” he said. “I started to bowl because I didn’t want to get a duck and do nothing for the rest of the game. Since then the bowling has been such an enjoyable thing because you have so much control over what happens.”Copeland runs his own coaching business so was always talking to his charges about the best method to deliver the various options and on the way taught himself. “I haven’t had any bowling coaching until I came into the state squad,” he said. “There are guys that I’ve played with at St George who have helped me, but never really specific one-on-one coaching.”In an era where technique rules, Copeland is a natural player from another age. He likes to swing the ball but at 195cm can also pull back his length and hit the pitch hard. During his half-season last year he showed his flexibility by collecting five-fors in Adelaide and Hobart after his stunning 8 for 92 on debut against Queensland at the SCG. That was his first eight-wicket return since his third-grade days.Copeland has just completed his first pre-season with the Blues, replacing his usual method of keeping fit in winter by playing hockey. Bowling has been his focus but he is desperate to improve his batting. He said he scored 80s and 90s in first grade during his time as an opener, but only managed a top of 9 for his state.”My record from last year doesn’t say I can bat,” he said. “But in myself I know I can.” A lack of runs won’t worry his team-mates, as long as he keeps taking wickets.

Liverpool: O’Hara lauds Konate live on air

Former Premier League midfielder Jamie O’Hara has heaped praise on Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate following the 2-0 victory over Villarreal.

The lowdown: One foot in France?

The Reds took a giant stride towards their 10th European Cup final and a showdown in Paris with a relatively straightforward win over a resilient Villarreal outfit at Anfield.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was integral in the opener as the midfielder’s cross was deflected beyond former Manchester City goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli before Sadio Mane doubled the lead moments later.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-30/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, it wasn’t a member of the attacking fraternity that caught the eye of one particular onlooker…

The latest: O’Hara impressed

Speaking live-on-air, TalkSPORT show host O’Hara lauded central defender Konate for his display in the UEFA Champions League semi-final.

“We talked about maybe if they got in behind Trent? But Konate tonight was just awesome, he was a machine. There is no weakness.”

Indeed, the 22-year-old won 5/5 (100%) of his aerial duels and 8/9 (89%) duels in total, also making two clearances in a 7.40/10 rated display (Sofascore).

The verdict: Unbeaten

As things stand the French Under 21 international is yet to taste defeat as a Liverpool player when featuring, playing in 23 unbeaten matches since signing from RB Leipzig for £36million last summer (Sky Sports).

With performances such as this, albeit the Reds were relatively untested in a defensive sense, it’s easy to see why Jurgen Klopp held refrained from spending big on a centre-back in January 2021 despite the desperate need for reinforcements.

Konate has been nothing short of a revelation on Merseyside and looks almost certain to play a huge part in what is an exciting run-in on the quest for a never before seen quadruple and beyond.

De virada, time misto do São Paulo bate o Red Bull no Morumbi

Virada no segundo tempo

O time misto do São Paulo tinha uma atuação ruim contra o Red Bull.

Apenas 9.226 pessoas estiveram no Morumbi neste domingo.

Somerset have strengthened their bowling attack for next season by signing seamer Gemaal Hussain from Gloucestershire on a three-year contract.Hussain, 27, was recruited from club cricket in Derbyshire early in the 2009 season to play for Gloucester and was one of the major surprise-packages of the 2010 season, taking 67 wickets in his first full season of Championship cricket to become the leading wicket-taker in the Second Division. But Hussain rejected Gloucestershire’s offer of a new contract earlier this month saying that he wanted to play in the First Division. He was approached by Nottinghamshire and Hampshire but followed his Gloucestershire team-mate Steve Kirby to Taunton.”Gemaal has had an excellent year and we are delighted to have signed him,” said Somerset’s director of cricket Brian Rose. “It means that we have got quality and depth in our seam-bowling department.”Gloucestershire are suffering a glut of moves with Hussain the fourth to leave following Kirby, former Zimbabwe seamer Anthony Ireland who has joined Middlesex, and batsman Will Porterfield who has joined Warwickshire.
