Robson leads the way for cosmopolitan Middlesex

It is probably only natural that a club based in the middle of one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Europe will reflect the community it serves. But, even by the standards of London, this Middlesex side is a cosmopolitan bunch.

It is probably only natural that a club based in the middle of one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Europe will reflect the community it serves. But, even by the standards of London, this Middlesex side is a cosmopolitan bunch. It contains two men born in Australia, three men born or brought up in South Africa, one born in German, another in Wales and one each from Lancashire and Kent. Even the two London-born players, Tim Murtagh and Toby Roland-Jones, have previously passed through the Surrey system. You could make a strong case to argue that not one of this team have developed through the Middlesex development programme.Middlesex, noting their reliance upon imports, have invested heavily in their facilities in recent times and it is hoped, in time, they will be more self reliant. But they were grateful for a couple of their imports on the second day of this game. First Sam Robson established a platform before John Simpson built on it to earn Middlesex a position from which they could earn a match-defining advantage on day three.Robson looks a fine player. There is more than a passing resemblance to Mike Atherton in his determination and the way he looks at the crease, with the fluency through wide mid on and the similarities of the cut stroke most uncanny. But quite who benefits from his development remains to be seen. Robson, who claims he is uncertain over his qualification status, was born in Australia, played for the U19 side and returned to participate in Grade cricket this winter. He has a British mother, however, and is ensuring he spends enough time in the UK to qualify for England at the start of the 2014 season. In this weather, that probably shows some level of commitment.Bearing in mind Australia’s current dearth of batting talent, however, he could well be one of three men in this match (Chris Rogers and Ed Cowan are the others) considered for national selection some time before then. His options remain open and Australia could do a great deal worse.Certainly he was reluctant to categorically confirm his commitment to England when asked about it at the close of play. “Everyone wants to play international cricket,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “I’m loving playing in England and my home is in London. I’m not looking at anything more than that.”Whether that is a satisfactory situation in a county game that is duty bound to support the development of the England team is debatable. While it might be argued that players like Robson help raise the standard, it might equally be argued that they impede the progress of young men who would be less equivocal in their national commitments. Robson, understandably focused on making his way in the game, is hardly to blame for the unsatisfactory regulations.Robson, keeping with the theme of this match, battled hard only to then play a large part in his own downfall. Throwing his hands at a wide ball, he edged to the keeper in a spell of play that brought Nottinghamshire back into the game; a shot he later described as “criminal”. Middlesex, having posted 106 for the first wicket, then lost five wickets for 69 runs. Still trailing by 103 with their top-order gone, the match was in the balance. That Nottinghamshire side were unable to capitalise upon that position was largely their own fault. On a pitch offering variable bounce and in conditions offering just enough seam and swing, they delivered far too many release balls to build the requisite pressure. Middlesex accumulated 160 runs in boundaries and another 38 in extras – including 11 from wides and eight from no-balls – as Nottinghamshire’s bowlers squandered the conditions and sprayed the ball around.”We’re slightly disappointed,” Luke Fletcher, the pick of the bowlers, admitted afterwards. “We didn’t put the ball in the right areas enough. It is still moving around and swinging.”Gareth Berg – South African born, but an Italian international cricketer – and Simpson also deserve some credit. The pair added 116 for the sixth wicket with Simpson registering his first half-century in the Championship since September 2011. He drove and cut nicely, but could count himself fortunate that Nottinghamshire’s bowlers remained so inconsistent. He had earned his side a lead of 19 by the time bad light ended play 9.2 overs early. Possibly, had Ollie Rayner been dismissed, play could have continued: if is often said you can see clearly once Rayner has gone.Perhaps the cold contributed to Nottinghamshire’s problems. In conditions so cold that even Captain Oates would think twice before venturing out for a walk, the floodlights remained on for the entire day and fielding was an uncomfortable business. When Nottinghamshire did stick to a decent line and length, they won due reward. Chris Rogers, who may have nudged the Australian selectors once more by passing 19,000 first-class runs on his way to another half-century, perished when he left a straight one that swung back at him before Joe Denly, Dawid Malan and Neil Dexter were all forced onto the back foot by sustained and impressive spells of short bowling and then dismissed when they failed to get fully forward to fuller balls. While Fletcher may still more resemble the chef at Hooters he used to be than an elite athlete, he bowled with skill and discipline. Ajmal Shahzad, among some pretty horrid stuff, also bowled some excellent deliveries, but Andy Carter, feeding the cut shot, endured a disappointing day and Andre Adams, by his lofty standards, was surprisingly inconsistent.Middlesex’s hopes of pressing for victory could be harmed by an injury to James Harris, though. The club fear he has a hamstring strain, but hope he has been suffering from cramp after his exertions on the first day. It remains to be seen if he will bowl again in the game.

Embalado!

MCC reveals Lord's Masterplan

The MCC has revealed a 25-year Masterplan for the development of Lord’s to maintain the ground’s status as the finest in the world and to secure Two Test matches and two ODIs every year.

ESPNcricinfo staff01-May-2013Gatting to be MCC president

Mike Gatting, the former England captain, will become the next president of MCC when he takes over from Mike Griffith on October 1.

Gatting, who played 79 Tests, retired from first-class cricket in 1998 having hit more than 36,500 first-class runs at an average of 49.52 and is now Managing Director of Cricket Partnerships at ECB.

“Few people are so closely identified with Lord’s as Mike Gatting,” Griffith said. “He made Lord’s his home for Middlesex, and made more appearances for the county than any other player. He was an excellent and a particularly brave batsman for England, and he has continued to serve cricket with a dedication and passion that is unstinting for both ECB and MCC.
“Mike’s absolute priority is the good of cricket – he cares for and thinks deeply about the game. He has already done so much for MCC and Middlesex – it is fitting that someone of his cricketing stature should be president during this great ground’s Bicentenary in 2014.”

The MCC has revealed a 15-year Masterplan for the development of Lord’s to maintain the ground’s status as the finest in the world and to secure two Test matches and two ODIs every year. The project, compiled by the MCC Ground Working Party and publicised to members at the club’s AGM, will cost up to £200 million, begin in 2014 will the final phase schedule to get underway in 2027.The development will see the capacity increase by 2,700 with the Warner, Tavern, Allen, Compton and Edrich stands rebuilt and the pavilion extended. A new entrance will be created on Grove End Road behind the pavilion, which will supersede the Grace Gates as the member’s entrance, and the existing entrances will be upgraded to better cater for large attendances. The new stands, Grove End Road entrance and new Thomas Lord building will be completed by 2017 and be funded by current MCC resources. The development will pause in 2019 when England host the World Cup before continuing with the rebuilding of the Compton and Edrich Stands and work on the Nursery Ground – a new food street, ECB offices and the removal of the Nursery pavilion to move the playing area towards Wellington Road.”This Masterplan has cricket at its heart,” MCC president Mike Griffith said. “Every MCC Member cares deeply for our wonderful ground and we have a duty to ensure any changes made to Lord’s reflect the love we have for cricket, its history and its heritage. This Masterplan will reinforce the special place the ground has within the game by making it even better for every player and spectator who comes here.”Colin Maber, the chairman of MCC’s Ground Working Party and Estates committee, added: “The Masterplan has been designed to provide a framework within which Ground development over the next 15 years can be set.”The phased approach allows room for flexibility and evolution. Our key principles – on the absolute need to retain the size of both grounds, on keeping Lord’s as a Ground rather than making it a stadium, on the importance of green open spaces, and on enhancing the experience for every visitor – will underpin all we do. It is advanced work in progress, but can be flexed to reflect changing economic circumstances, technology and research.”

England target semi-final berth

ESPNcricinfo previews the Group A match between England and Sri Lanka at The Oval

The Preview by Alex Winter12-Jun-2013Match FactsJune 13, 2013, The Oval
Start time 1pm (1200 GMT)Ravi Bopara has put in two usual performances since returning to the England ODI side•Getty Images

The Big PictureEngland were too rigid, too slow and too one-dimensional at Edgbaston – probably why they thumped Australia by 48 runs. The familiar concerns over England’s shortcomings were rolled out at lunch on Saturday, only to be wheeled away at the close. England have a knack for getting it right on the night, particularly in ODIs at home, and should they get the job done against Sri Lanka, they will be in the semi-finals.The scaremongering will emerge again over England’s batting – how will they survive Lasith Malinga’s toe-crushers? How will they find a way to score from Rangana Herath, who put England in a spin last March? They’ve never seen Sachithra Senanayake before. Their blasters with the bat are no good against slow bowling. You can see it is quite easy to descend into debilitating nervousness about the England line up.But England have their plans, England know their game and, more often than not, have been able to put in a performance with the bat. Anyone who left for the bar at Edgbaston after 40 overs of the first innings on Saturday would have been after a stiff measure to numb the pain of the previous 20 overs. By the interval, a response to England’s total of 269 would have included pleasant surprise and bewilderment at how they got there after their middle order was so quickly shot down.England found a way. Ravi Bopara played a great hand and his performances at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston were just what he was picked for: a handy few late-order runs and a tricky spell of slippery overs. Bopara balances England quite nicely and looking at the wickets from the opening Champions Trophy matches, pace off the ball is a good weapon.Sri Lanka needed more of it against New Zealand. Angelo Mathews admitted his selection was wrong in Cardiff. A second spinner would have forced New Zealand into doing more than drop-and-run and use the pace of the quicker men to nudge their way to the target. More of a threat then Tillakaratne Dilshan was needed. It was a bizarre oversight; especially considering New Zealand played two spinners. They were left relying on Malinga and even his best ideally needs more than 139 to work with. Sri Lanka’s dealing with the new balls – which haven’t done as much as might have been expected – and more pertinently, reverse swing, could decide the match.Form guide (Completed, competitive matches only, most recent first)
England WWLLW
Sri Lanka LLWLWWatch out forEoin Morgan hasn’t been firing on all cylinders since returning from the IPL but there have been some positive signs, the brightest of those his 49 in 40 balls at Trent Bridge. England’s tactics with the bat heavily rely on late-innings hitting and Morgan, along with Jos Buttler, is responsible for extricating England from their foundation-laying and is essential if they are to post a large total.Surrounded by flashy players, a more considered approach will be needed to overcome England’s bowling attack. Enter Mahela Jayawardene, very experienced and successful in England with three centuries and an average of 42.00 in 24 ODIs. His form has not been flash of late, but he has the ability to counter the reverse-swing that Sri Lanka will have to master later in the innings.Team newsEngland have Graeme Swann fit and available again after the back spasm that kept him out at Edgbaston. But James Tredwell never lets his country down which creates an interesting situation. Tim Bresnan’s wife is more than a week overdue with the couple’s first baby; the potential remains for Bresnan to be whisked up the M1.England (possible) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Ravi Bopara, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James AndersonSri Lanka appear unlikely to play two spinners but could recall Nuwan Kulasekara in place of Shaminda Eranga who, in the circumstances, proved expensive in Cardiff. Senanayake may also replace Rangana Herath.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Mahela Jayawardene, 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Angelo Mathews (capt), 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Lahiru Thirimanne, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Sachithra Senanayake, 11 Lasith MalingaPitch and conditionsThere will be a new wicket at The Oval which will suit England if it returns to the pace and bounce on show for the Pakistan-West Indies game. After a couple of rainy days, the weather forecast is also set fair.Stats and trivia England just edge the head-to-head record from the 20 ODIs played against Sri Lanka at home. England have won 11 and lost 9. The sides have met three times at The Oval, England winning twice – in 1988 and 2011 – and losing in 2006 England have won both previous Champions Trophy ties against Sri Lanka, both by comfortable margins. A six-wicket win at Johannesburg in 2009 followed a 49-run win at the Rose Bowl in 2004.Quotes”The first two games against New Zealand seem to be out of the way. We seem to have recovered a bit of form and confidence now.”
