Virat Kohli has praised the Indian team for showing character by brushing aside early losses in the tri-series to finish on top of the table and qualify for the final. India beat Sri Lanka by 81 runs under the D/L method and the two teams will play each other again in the final on July 11.”To bounce back like this and finish at the top of the table is a commendable effort. I am very proud of the team,” Kohli said. “We have shown a lot of character. When three good teams are playing in the tournament, anything can happen. We were never bothered about the rain delays. Our performance showed what happens when one executes their plans properly.”The match against Sri Lanka was a must-win game for India and they struggled early in their innings on a difficult pitch. Kohli, who shared a 49-run stand with Rohit Sharma for the second wicket, said the team had a game plan of conserving wickets. India were on 119 for 3 when rain ended their innings.”When Rohit and I were playing, we just wanted to play ourselves in. It paid in the end, because we had wickets in hand, and it worked in the D/L calculations in our favour,” Kohli said. “Then the bowlers responded beautifully. Full credit to them.”Rohit Sharma, who fought hard for his 48 not out, was pleased with his effort. “I took it up as a challenge. I know that I have a long way to go,” he said. “I am really not bothered about whether I am getting a big score as long as I am contributing and working on my mistakes.”Also crucial to India’s defence of 178 in 29 overs – a revised D/L target – was Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Making good use of the pitch after the long rain delay, he finished with career-best figures of 4 for 8 in six overs, and said the pitch at Queens Park Oval was the ‘most helpful one’ that he had bowled on so far.Sri Lanka’s captain, Angelo Mathews said the rain delay had made the pitch tougher for his batsmen. “We bowled well, but when we batted the pitch had been under covers and had sweated more. We had nothing to lose and went for the win,” Mathews said after his team was dismissed for 96. “It’s mentally and physically draining to play three days in a row. We have played some good cricket to get to the final, hopefully we can beat India on Thursday.”

Warner altercation overshadows tame draw

Warner was again gaining attention for the wrong reasons as he found himself in yet another heated altercation, this time with South Africa A’s wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile

David Warner was again gaining attention for the wrong reasons as he found himself in yet another heated altercation, this time with South Africa A’s wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile. Warner got into a war of words with Tsolekile during the final day’s play, with the pair having to be separated by South Africa A’s Vaughn van Jaarsveld, and the umpires having to intervene.Warner, however, termed the incident “friendly banter” as he took to Twitter after the match: “Great to be back playing cricket, had lots of fun this week and a bit of friendly banter from the wicket keeper. Was very funny!!”With Australia currently embroiled in an Ashes series, Warner had been sent on Australia A’s tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe with a focus on gaining meaningful match practice for the longer format, as he was suspended from playing the warm-ups leading up to the first Test following his altercation with Joe Root during the Champions Trophy. Only two days ago, Warner had admitted he needed a “kick up the bum” after that incident. That was not the first time Warner had been in the news for the wrong reasons this summer. In May, he was involved in a heated Twitter exchange with Australian journalists Malcolm Conn and Robert Craddock, for which he later issued a public apology, and was subsequently fined AUD $5750 (US $5600) by Cricket Australia for his indiscretions. The game itself ended in the draw that always looked likely. Australia A began the fourth day’s play with a 28-run partnership between openers Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh. Once Marsh departed for 11, Alex Doolan came in, with the pair putting on 105 runs for the second wicket. Doolan was later dismissed leg before by Kyle Abbott for 38. Warner came in at No. 4 and, fresh from his 193 in the first innings, struck six boundaries before being caught behind, ironically, by Tsolekile off Beuran Hendricks for 33.Wickets fell at regular intervals for the Australians, but the efforts of Finch (88), Doolan, and Warner ensured they batted out enough time to hold on to a draw in the first unofficial Test between these sides. Both teams will have a three-day break before they resume battle in the second unofficial Test in Rustenburg on July 31.

Pujara hails batting unit

Cheteshwar Pujara, the India A captain, has praised the team’s batting as the main reason for success in the tri-series

Cheteshwar Pujara, the India A captain, has praised the team’s batting as the main reason for success in the A-team tri-series in Pretoria. India’s batsmen put up scores of 285 or more in each of the four league matches, and though they managed a less substantial 243 in the final, it proved sufficient to beat Australia A by 50 runs.”As a unit, we wanted to win this series,” Pujara said. “A couple of the league matches didn’t go our way and those were quite close games. We lost two games against Australia and I thought we would have won at least one of them. Our batting unit did a really great job and that was our strength. In the final, the bowlers stood up and did the job for the team.”While visiting sides have generally struggled against the pace and movement on offer during the South African season, teams put up large totals in this series. Both India and Australia are set to tour South Africa later this season, and Pujara felt the conditions during the tri-series didn’t mirror what the national teams will be faced with.”I don’t think the conditions will be the same when we come back,” Pujara said. “Wickets are quite flat out here at the moment and when we come in December the conditions will be hugely different and we are aware about it. It’s about getting used to the conditions, not the wickets only but the weather and other aspects of this game.”The flat tracks also provided a severe test for India’s largely inexperienced bowling attack, besides posing a challenge to Pujara’s captaincy skills. “The matches were quite high scoring and it was difficult for the bowlers to execute their plans,” Pujara said. “When you have 400 on the board and you still feel it is chaseable, it’s a difficult job for the captain and for the bowlers, because at times what they want to do, it’s not possible. But we stuck together, we realised the wicket was flat and we were bound to get hit but if you had plans you wanted to execute, you should continue trying that.”With the tri-series completed, Pujara and his team will now shift their focus to the two four-day games against South Africa A which will provide a chance for several fringe players to push their case for a Test berth. The first of the four-day matches starts on Saturday at Rustenburg.

No gol, Fernando Prass será novamente titular.

Pakistan claw back with late strikes

Pakistan’s collapse against the second new ball and determined batting from Tino Mawoyo and Hamilton Masakadza put Zimbabwe slightly ahead in the second and final Test

The Report by Abhishek Purohit12-Sep-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBrian Vitori claimed his maiden Test five-for•AFP

Pakistan’s collapse against the second new ball and determined batting from Tino Mawoyo and Hamilton Masakadza put Zimbabwe slightly ahead in the second and final Test. Zimbabwe’s fast bowlers ripped through Pakistan on either side of lunch, the visitors collapsing from 211 for 4 to 230 all out. Mawoyo and Masakadza then built the lead to 185, but their dismissals, at the stroke of stumps, helped Pakistan to claw back.Brian Vitori, in his first Test in nearly 20 months, did most of the damage with the ball, claiming his maiden five-wicket haul, while Tinashe Panyangara dislodged the solid Younis Khan for 77. Zimbabwe’s efforts earned them a 64-run lead, to go along with a 78-run first-innings advantage in the first Test.Pakistan’s strategy in the morning seemed to be to try and get through to the ball change, due in 12 overs at the start, with their overnight pair of Misbah and Younis. That was a sensible thought, the pair having added 67 in a rebuilding effort the previous evening. But the manner in which both executed that strategy stalled Pakistan. Only 19 runs were added in the 12 overs leading up to the new ball, five of them from part-timer Elton Chigumbura.Admittedly, as on the previous day, run-scoring wasn’t easy on the pitch. The ball wasn’t quite coming on, the medium-pace and disciplined lengths of the Zimbabwe seamers weren’t helping and the cracks on the good length area would have been on the minds of the batsmen. Still, 48 runs from 28 overs in the morning session was too sluggish a scoring rate. After successfully making it to the new ball in his chosen way, Misbah decided to change his approach. The second delivery Vitori bowled with the new one, a wide one outside off, Misbah lunged to drive and edged to first slip for 33 from 120 balls. It was the third successive time in the series Misbah had fallen after getting a start and also the third successive time he had given it away trying a forcing stroke against the run of play.Asad Shafiq hung around for a while before he was bowled by a sharp incutter from Tendai Chatara, stuck on the crease in a dismissal identical to the way he had gone in the second innings of the first Test.Pakistan ran only eight singles in the first session and went to lunch on 211 for 5, still 83 behind Zimbabwe’s 294. After the break, Younis came out appearing intent to make amends for Pakistan’s sedate start. He drove at everything that was pitched up. Panyangara gave him three successive such deliveries, wide outside off, all of which were driven. The fourth one was bowled into the pad. Younis, with his instinct to push forward, could not keep the flick down and midwicket took the catch. It was mostly down to Adnan Akmal now, Abdur Rehman having gone lbw first ball to Panyangara. But unlike the second innings of the first Test, the wicketkeeper disappointed. He was beaten on the drive by Vitori, bowling from round the wicket, but went for a similar expansive stroke next ball, and was taken at second slip. Unlike Zimbabwe’s last pair, there was absolutely no resistance from Pakistan’s tail, Vitori snapping up the last two to end with 5 for 61.Zimbabwe were hampered at the start of their second innings, the ill Vusi Sibanda unable to open. The offspinner Prosper Utseya, who usually bats at No. 8, was promoted instead, but did not last long. Mawoyo and Masakadza, though, hung in to get through the 14 overs till tea. The often unplayable zip and movement Junaid Khan had generated in the first innings was absent, and that allowed the duo to settle in. Both drove well off the front foot, especially against the spinners. There were a few hiccups after tea, chiefly against Rehman. But luck favoured Zimbabwe. Masakadza played back and was beaten off two successive pitched-up deliveries from Rehman that stayed low, but just missed off stump. Rehman got the odd ball to kick from around the same spot, but was unlucky to miss the edge. When he found it, with Mawoyo on 52, Adnan dropped the catch.Rehman’s perseverance finally brought him just reward, with only two more overs left, as Mawoyo was trapped in front on 58 with an arm ball. Four deliveries later, Rahat rapped Masakadza on the pad, and umpire Steve Davis upheld the appeal, replays suggesting the ball may have missed off on the angle. Two deliveries later, Rehman struck again, having the nightwatchman Chatara pop one to short leg. Zimbabwe’s lead was 15 short of 200, but Rehman had ensured Pakistan were still in the game.
