Cullinan: India need to guard against complacency

Match factsMarch 30, 2014
Start time 1930 local (1330 GMT)Big pictureHistorically, few teams have been more ruthless in their demolition of the underdogs but, on Sunday, Australia will be rooting for the underdogs. For if Bangladesh don’t beat Pakistan in the afternoon, Australia, who have lost two close matches out of two, will be out of the tournament, rendering their remaining matches inconsequential. It will also take out all the sting from what the organisers would have thought would be a top draw: India v Australia on a Sunday night with qualification implications aplenty.
For India, though, this cannot be a dead rubber even though they have become the first team to qualify for the semi-finals. India will dearly love to keep their unbeaten run intact, and end top of their group so that they face the second-placed team from the other group in the semi-final. Despite whatever is going wrong with their administration, the India cricket team has put up a great show so far. Theirs are the only bowlers, other than Nepal’s, to have not conceded 140 in this tournament. They have got the right bowling mix for these conditions unless a team can take apart their quicker bowlers. They have not even lost a toss yet, which could have at least challenged their bowlers to bowl in the dewy conditions. To be fair to India, though, they haven’t won any of these matches because the opposition had to bowl with the wet ball; dew has hardly been a factor in Mirpur so far.Australia are one side that can dismantle the Indian bowling – they have done so in their last two World Twenty20 meetings with India – but will they struggle for that motivation and that edge if Pakistan have already beaten Bangladesh and thus knocked them out even before George Bailey walks out for the toss?Form guide (most recent first)
Australia LLWWW
India WWWWWWatch out forGeorge Bailey’s captaincy has come in for some criticism over the last two games, especially his failure to take the pace off the ball. When they failed to keep West Indies down in the second game, Shane Watson, who doesn’t provide that much pace, bowled just the two overs for 11 runs. He will be watched closely in the match against India.
India have chased their three sub-par totals with ease, but Shikhar Dhawan’s lack of form will be a bit of a concern for them. In New Zealand, he was allowed to cool his heels for one ODI, and he came back strongly in the Tests. Will India look to do the same now that the semi-final spot is sealed? The sun has almost set on what has otherwise been a stupendous summer for Australia•Getty Images

Team newsAustralia might want to play two spinners at the same time, but then again India are hardly the side you want to expose them to.
Australia (probable) 1 Aaron Finch, 2 David Warner, 3 Shane Watson, 4 George Bailey (capt.), 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Brad Hodge, 7 James Faulkner, 8 Brad Haddin (wk), 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Doug Bollinger, 11 James MuirheadIndia have no pressing reason to make a change except to give Ajinkya Rahane a look-in should he be needed in big matches later.
India (probable) 1 Shikhar Dhawan/ Ajinkya Rahane, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh/ Ajinkya Rahane, 6 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Mohammed ShamiStats and trivia MS Dhoni has won 15 of his last 16 international tosses. The one match where he lost the toss was washed out. Every time Australia have scored 175 or more in T20s in Asia, they have lost. If he plays this match, David Warner will become the first Australian with 50 T20I caps.Quotes”I wouldn’t want to swim in a tsunami. I wouldn’t want to challenge conditions. If we win the toss, we’ll again bowl first if that is what is required.”

“[It’s] not a weakness, because certainly spinners didn’t get us out, we got ourselves out. So we’ve got some work to do in that area, but that’s like every area: fast bowling, playing short-pitched bowling.”

Allenby regains Glamorgan T20 captaincy

Jim Allenby, the Australia-born allrounder, has been restored to Glamorgan’s T20 captaincy, a year after losing the position led to him considering his future at the club

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Feb-2014Jim Allenby, the Australia-born allrounder, has been restored to Glamorgan’s T20 captaincy, a year after losing the position led to him considering his future at the club. Allenby was demoted having performed the role in 2012, with Marcus North named captain of both limited-overs teams, but put the disappointment behind him and signed a four-year contract in August. With North no longer contracted as Glamorgan’s overseas player, Allenby has been repaid for his commitment. Last season, he was the team’s outstanding performer in all three formats, helping Glamorgan to their first Lord’s final in more than a decade.Mark Wallace will continue to lead the Championship side, as well as taking the 50-over captaincy, which he stepped up to during the knockout stages of the Yorkshire Bank 40 after North returned to Australia. The announcements are the first since a new management team took charge in Cardiff – with Toby Radford succeeding Mathew Mott as head coach and former England managing director Hugh Morris installed as chief executive – and firm up Glamorgan’s plans for the 2014 season.”I will be delighted to captain Glamorgan in the NatWest T20 Blast this year, it has been my aim to help win trophies and to have the responsibility to contribute to this as captain is very exciting” Allenby said. “I’ve committed to the club by signing a four-year contract and my ambitions, to win trophies and play at the highest level of the game, have not changed.”We showed that we are a good team last year and capable of competing with anyone. The club has invested in the squad, the facilities and we have a new management, so there is plenty to be optimistic about. I want to help to bring success back to this club and look forward to working with the playing squad, head coach Toby Radford and the coaching staff, as well as Hugh Morris.”Allenby has indicated his desire to play for England, who he qualifies for on residency, and pushed his case with a series of strong performances in 2013. He was a key component of the side that lost to Notts in the YB40 final, with bat and ball (454 runs at 41.27, 12 wickets at 36.58), led the Friends Life t20 run-scoring and passed 1000 runs in the Championship for the first time.At 31, he may struggle to convince the England selectors of his value, but Allenby made an impression when appearing for Western Australia against the tourists before the Ashes, scoring a half-century and taking four wickets.Wallace was appointed club captain in 2012, succeeding Alviro Petersen. Glamorgan finished eighth in Division Two of the Championship last year but there were signs of improvement, as young talent such as Mike Reed and Andrew Salter blended with the experience of Michael Hogan, Murray Goodwin and Allenby. Wallace will also guide the team in the new Royal London Cup, which replaces the YB40.Wallace said: “2014 is going to be an exciting season for the club as we compete for promotion to Division One of the County Championship and challenge for honours in the reformatted limited-over competitions. I am delighted to continue as captain of this fantastic county and I am looking forward to working in partnership with Hugh Morris as director of cricket and CEO, new head coach Toby Radford, Jim as T20 captain and the rest of the squad.”We showed last year, particularly in our progress to the Lord’s final, that this team has a lot of talent and that we can compete with the best in the country. We need to perform consistently at the same high level in all formats of the game.”Morris, who stepped down as managing director of England cricket in January, has opted for continuity on his return to Glamorgan, where he spent 16 years as a player. “Mark has led by example after taking the role, not least in returning to lead the team to Lord’s during the knockout phase of the Yorkshire Bank40 competition last year,” he said. “The man is Glamorgan through and through and we are delighted that he will continue his captaincy as we look forward to the exciting challenges that 2014 will bring.”Jim Allenby has shown his quality for several seasons at Glamorgan and he will give valuable support to Mark in the longer formats of the game, whilst his abilities with both bat and ball allow him to lead from the front in this season’s extended NatWest T20 Blast.”

Mumbai, Vidarbha in first ever face-off

Mumbai and Vidarbha will be playing against each other for the first time in the history of the Ranji Trophy

Amol Karhadkar27-Nov-2013

Zaheer Khan is one of three international players in the match who are heading to South Africa•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The last time Sairaj Bahutule entered the visitors’ dressing room at Wankhede Stadium, he helped Maharashtra beat Mumbai. Eight years later, Bahutule, a former Mumbai captain who led the side to two Ranji Trophy titles, once again returns to the Wankhede as part of the visiting squad, this time as the Vidarbha coach.Despite hoping for a result like in 2005-06, Bahutule knows a contest between Vidarbha and defending champions Mumbai is like a David v Goliath fight. Though these two teams have never faced off in the Ranji Trophy, Mumbai are favourites.Vidarbha have qualified for the Ranji knockouts only three times since playing their maiden season in 1957-58, with a quarterfinal appearance in 1995-96 being their best performance. Mumbai, on the other hand, have more titles than all the other teams put together.Bahutule admitted that most of his players would be looking to learn from their experiences over the next four days in Mumbai. “Skills-wise Mumbai are far better than us,” he said. “Vidarbha are a developing team and I have a lot of belief in the players. They are a lot more hard working and sincere in their effort.”Obviously they don’t play a lot of local cricket compared to those in Mumbai, so they don’t play in different situations all the time. Mumbai cricket is all about playing in different situations, different wickets all over the city. Nagpur is very limited in that sense, so we’re looking forward to it. For any team to play against Mumbai is a big occasion and we’re ready.”Vidarbha, who are sixth in the Group A points table, won’t have the advantage of surprise either, because Mumbai coach Sulakshan Kulkarni was an integral part of Vidarbha’s development plans for three years before leaving at the start of the 2011-12 season. Kulkarni said Mumbai were not taking Vidarbha lightly.”You should never underestimate any team,” he said. “They’re doing well. They have scored an outright win and are placed mid-table. I know the Vidarbha players well. I was coaching them for three years. They’ve been doing well and they’ve been improving steadily. They’ve improved a lot under the new coach and there is no question of us taking them lightly.”Vidarbha will look to their strike bowler Umesh Yadav for inroads into the formidable Mumbai batting line-up, which has been strengthened by the return of Ajinkya Rahane. Yadav, Rahane and Mumbai captain Zaheer Khan will use the match to gear up for their upcoming tour of South Africa. While the focus will be on the three internationals, Bahutule hopes the other Vidarbha players will make the most of the opportunity of playing the strongest team on the circuit.”It’s a fantastic experience for them. They may have seen some of the players on screen like Zaheer, Wasim and Ajinkya and now to play against them in a game means a lot,” he said. “Our strength is we play as a unit. Whatever limitations we have, we try and make the most out of whatever roles are given to each individual.”

Chennai Super Kings again the team to beat

Big Picture

Chennai Super Kings are the only team to make it to the semi-final stage – or the equivalent – of every IPL tournament so far. Twice, including in the previous season, they’ve finished runners-up. In 2010 and 2011, they won.Like most IPL teams, they’ve had their share of controversy, not the least of it being claims of conflict of interest – BCCI president N Srinivasan also manages India Cements, the franchise’s owners. However, the on-field success has so far managed to keep the spotlight on the positives. This time, though, Super Kings face what is possibly their biggest off-field issue yet: that of the exclusion of Sri Lankan players from the games in Chennai, following political tensions. The other franchises, whose Sri Lankans play more central roles in the team, have voiced fears that this gives Super Kings an unfair advantage in their home games, while some have criticised the IPL’s softness in not moving the matches away from Chennai altogether. This means Super Kings will need a near-perfect showing to drag the headlines in the right direction, but even another triumph might leave a bad aftertaste.Back to the actual cricket then. Apart from being the IPL’s most successful franchise, Super Kings have also been the tournament’s most settled team. Few changes had been made to the squad over five seasons, with the batting and spin-bowling departments being their customary powerhouses. This year, though, the obvious focus is on bolstering the pace bowling, and the squad sports several new faces as a result. Australia’s Dirk Nannes and Ben Laughlin, West Indies’ Jason Holder and South Africa’s Chris Morris – for whom Super Kings paid US$625,000, a whopping 31 times his base price – were snapped up in February’s auction. Later, they signed Imtiaz Ahmed, Ankit Rajpoot, Mohit Sharma and Ronit More, domestic pacers who are all coming off solid Ranji Trophy performances. Given the nature of the Chepauk track though – which was on ample display during the recent India-Australia Test – how much of an impact this move will have is as yet unclear.

Key players

With Super Kings turning all that attention to their seam-bowling, it’s clear that they believe R Ashwin has the spin front well covered, with Ravindra Jadeja backing him up. Ashwin has the numbers, in the IPL and otherwise, to back up that notion. Currently India’s primary spinner, he has 49 IPL wickets for Super Kings – second only to Albie Morkel, who has played 21 more games. More importantly, at the end of the 2012 season, Ashwin boasted of an economy rate of just over six, the best among all Super Kings bowlers. If Super Kings look to Ashwin with the ball, they look first and foremost to MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina with the bat. In the absence of the injured Faf du Plessis, the now-retired and ever-dependable Michael Hussey will partner M Vijay (who comes in high on confidence after feasting on Australia’s bowlers) at the top, leaving Raina and Dhoni in charge of finishing duties. That was an area Super Kings struggled in during the round-robin stage in 2012, often lacking the late surge. It is an area Raina and Dhoni are more than capable of improving upon.

Big name in

Dirk Nannes: He currently sits at No. 2 on the overall Twenty20 wickets charts, behind South African Alfonso Thomas. Despite his extensive T20 experience, he warmed the bench all through IPL 2012 for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was bought by Super Kings at the auction for US$600,000, and is likely to compete with fellow Australian quick Ben Hilfenhaus for the fourth foreign-player’s spot in their line-up.

Big name out

Doug Bollinger: The Australia seamer was one of four overseas players released by Super Kings in the lead-up to IPL 2013, alongside George Bailey, Scott Styris and Suraj Randiv. Bollinger had galvanised Super Kings’ campaign in 2010, when he arrived halfway through the tournament. Since then, he had been the team’s principal fast-bowling new-ball option, claiming 37 wickets at 18.72. That is, until Hilfenhaus arrived in similar fashion halfway through last year’s event.

Below the radar

Baba Aparajith: The eighteen-year-old allrounder from Tamil Nadu did not have a Ranji Trophy season that stood out. Where he did make his mark, though, was the Under-19 World Cup last year. A top-order batsman who can bowl handy offspin and a lively fielder, Aparajith knocked off Man-of-the-Match awards in the World Cup quarter-final and semi-final with all-round contributions. Considering Super Kings’ affinity for allrounders, he should fit into their scheme of things quite well.

Availability

Super Kings will be without Faf du Plessis for at least the first month of the IPL, as he recovers from a back injury. Allrounders Albie Morkel and Chris Morris are doubtful for the first two games due to South African domestic commitments. The squad includes two Sri Lankans: seamer Nuwan Kulasekara and offspinner Akila Dananjaya. Given the circumstances, whether they will travel to India at all is as yet unclear. None of Super Kings’ players have international commitments during the course of the IPL.

I insisted RCB buy a lot of bowlers – Kohli

Strengthening Royal Challengers Bangalore’s pace attack at the IPL auction, new captain Virat Kohli has said, was something he “insisted on”

Nikita Bastian in Bangalore03-Apr-2013At the IPL auction in February, Royal Challengers Bangalore picked up three of the five Indian seam bowlers on offer in RP Singh, Jaydev Unadkat and Pankaj Singh, apart from West Indies pacer Ravi Rampaul. Strengthening the pace attack, new captain Virat Kohli has said, was something he “insisted on”.”In Bangalore, if the wicket’s nice and fresh, the ball does seam around. Last year we were not to our 100% because of injuries to bowlers – we had to persist with a set of bowlers that did not probably work for us. So, this year, I insisted that we pick a lot of bowling options,” Kohli said on the eve of Royal Challengers’ game against Mumbai Indians.”With Indian bowlers, if you don’t have the regular guys doing well, then you always have six or seven fresh options who can come into the side and are confident.”Kohli, who will be the full-time captain of a senior side for the first time on Thursday night, said that decision demonstrated his faith in his team’s batsmen: “Our batting has been doing well for the last three years consistently. I was showing confidence in the batsmen.”Royal Challengers had a disappointing IPL 5, failing to make it to the playoffs. Over the last couple of years, Kohli had lead the team when regular captain Daniel Vettori had fitness issues. He admitted he had made a few mistakes, but said he hoped to learn from all that: “I’ve always enjoyed captaincy, last year and the year before that too. There were a few off moments, like in 2011 we played Kings XI Punjab in Dharamsala and I got the bowling combination wrong, and we ended up giving 220 runs on a green wicket. I was not too good with the field placements either but, yes, all that was a good learning curve.”Apart from missing out on the experience of the injured Zaheer Khan in the Mumbai game – recovering from a side strain, Zaheer is “70-80%” fit – Royal Challengers will also not have Anil Kumble to lean on. Kumble, for the first time, will be part of the opposition camp at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, having joined Mumbai Indians as chief mentor after stepping down from a similar role with the Bangalore franchise. Kohli said he learnt a lot by observing Kumble’s working style: “He was always someone who would help the players in any way we wanted. Whether it was any sort of issues or about cricket.”One thing he liked was always giving his 100% on the field, and he expected the other players to be the same. He kept pushing the players to perform but if he thought the players were down, he would then pull the load off the team all by himself. So that was something that was very striking in his captaincy and it’s something I would like to implement in our team as well.”Mumbai, too, will take the field with a new captain and minus their pace spearhead – Lasith Malinga is recovering from a sore back and will only join the team on April 5. Ricky Ponting takes charge for them, and he said he was looking forward to the challenge after a “refreshing” Australian domestic season. “I knew my time was up as far as captaincy in Australian cricket is concerned, so finishing the season with Tasmania and being just a regular player in the side was quite refreshing for me.”But I’ve known about the captaincy of Mumbai Indians for a couple of months now and I’ve been excited about that. With the squad of players we’ve got to work with, why won’t you be excited?”Unlike Royal Challengers, Mumbai’s main concern is the batting. Last season they fielded 24 players in all, and tried several opening combinations without much success. This is something he is looking to address, Ponting said: “Over the last couple of seasons we’ve swapped and changed and had different combinations opening. Guys have gone in and out of the side quite regularly. That tends to happen when you’re not winning games.”What we want to do this year is get off to a good start, and try and keep a pretty settled group of players together through the tournament. Barring injuries, hopefully we’ll be able to do that.”Much talk in the lead-up to the tournament has centred around Ponting having to share a dressing room with Harbhajan Singh and Sachin Tendulkar, both of whom played central roles in the 2008 Sydney Test’s controversy. Ponting said the trio was getting along fine. “I’ve really enjoyed their company over the last couple of days. Just having those experienced minds around will hold the team in good stead through the tournament.”

Wright returns with crucial fifty

England allrounder Luke Wright struck a half-century as the Sussex defeated the Northamptonshire by 12 runs in a low-scoring encounter

20-May-2012
ScorecardEngland allrounder Luke Wright struck a half-century as the Sussex defeated the Northamptonshire by 12 runs in a low-scoring encounter in the Clydesdale Bank 40.Sussex were bowled out for 180 inside 36 overs with Lee Daggett taking 4 for 31 and Wright, who was playing his first match of the season after IPL duties and illness, top-scoring by blasting 59 off 57 balls. Despite David Sales’ 51 off 70 deliveries, Northamptonshire fell short of their meagre target as they were limited to 168 for 7, Will Beer claiming 2 for 21.Sussex won the toss and chose to bat and lost Ireland batsman Ed Joyce for 23 when he missed his attempted sweep off James Middlebrook and the ball went on to hit his leg stump. This broke an opening stand of 73 with Wright and Matt Machan then faced five balls without scoring before he edged Daggett to Northants wicketkeeper David Murphy.Three deliveries later, former Zimbabwe international Murray Goodwin followed him back to the pavilion when he edged Daggett to Sales at slip. Wright went on to complete an explosive half-century off just 44 balls but Joe Gatting made only four before being bowled by Con de Lange.Wright then perished when he launched Middlebrook to David Willey at long on before Sharks wicketkeeper Ben Brown was trapped lbw by de Lange after plundering 20. Beer was the next to fall when he was caught and bowled by de Lange before Lee Daggett’s delivery careered into Sussex captain Michael Yardy’s off stump after he had reached 39.Daggett then pinned Amjad Khan lbw before Northants skipper Andrew Hall brought the innings to an end when England spinner Monty Panesar chipped him to Daggett at mid-off.Chasing 181, the the home side lost Willey in the third over when he was bowled by Yardy and Kyle Coetzer followed for the same score when his off stump was taken out by Wright.Opener Stephens Peters looked well set on 39 but he threw his wicket away when he smashed ex-Northants man Panesar to Machan at long off. Sales hung around to reach 50 off 67 balls but he soon fell when he was caught leg before by Beer after missing his sweep shot and Middlebrook departed with the very next ball by chipping Beer to Joyce at midwicket.Rob White was dismissed for 29 in the penultimate over when he launched Chris Liddle high into the air and was taken by Brown before Hall hammered the same bowler to Beer at deep midwicket.
