ScorecardSean Abbott returned to cricket at the SCG, bowling a bouncer in his first over and collecting two wickets as New South Wales dismissed Queensland for 268. Two weeks to the day after Phillip Hughes was struck by a bouncer bowled by Abbott at the same ground, cricket returned to some sense of normality around the country, with a Test match in Adelaide and three Sheffield Shield games. The New South Wales players wore shirts emblazoned with PJH 707 as a tribute to Hughes, who was the 707th man to represent the state, and wore black armbands. When Abbott was introduced in the 13th over he was applauded by spectators and sent down a bouncer with his fifth ball, which the batsman Joe Burns ducked underneath.Burns and Marnus Labuschagne put on 73 for the opening wicket before Labuschagne was caught off the offspin of William Somerville for 39, and Burns fell to Mitchell Starc for 59. Abbott’s first wicket came when he bowled Nathan Reardon for 6 and in his next over he added another when Ben Cutting was caught behind for 3.Queensland were in trouble at 6 for 132 but James Hopes and Chris Hartley rebuilt with a 105-run partnership that ended when Hartley fell to Somerville for 41. Starc added a third wicket, that of debutant Cameron Brimblecombe, and Hopes was then the last man out for 85 as the Bulls were dismissed in the 84th over.New South Wales batted nine overs before stumps and reached 1 for 17, with Ryan Carters on 7 and nightwatchman Somerville on 8. The one wicket to fall was that of Nick Larkin, who was caught off Hopes for a duck.

Hodge named for Prime Minister's XI

Brad Hodge might be holding on to a slim hope of being called up for the World Twenty20 after Australia’s selectors named him in the Prime Minister’s XI to take on England in Canberra next week. Hodge, 39, has been a Twenty20-only player for just over two years but will play in the 50-over match alongside fellow veteran Brett Lee, who will captain the team on Tuesday. In 2012, Australia sprung a major surprise by recalling the 40-year-old spinner Brad Hogg to the T20 side based on his form for the Perth Scorchers and he was retained until the World T20 in Sri Lanka later that year. It is not out of the question that Hodge, who is T20 cricket’s all-time leading run scorer, could be similarly recalled this year with a World T20 to be held in the first half of the year.Hodge and Lee will be the senior players in a Prime Minister’s XI that features several players who could be considered for international call-ups in the near future. Jackson Bird, Ben Cutting and Alister McDermott will for a strong pace attack while Luke Pomersbach and Chris Lynn will be keen to press their credentials as powerful batsmen.”Brett Lee and Brad Hodge bring leadership and experience to the team and will be great drawcards,” national selector John Inverarity said. “Chris Lynn has been in excellent form this season in all forms of the game. Jackson Bird is recovering well from injury and we are keen to increase his workload.”We have also been pleased with the progress of left-arm orthodox spinner Clive Rose, who has performed well for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield. ACT local Michael Spaseski is a promising young batsman and provides a great cricketing story. He is a first generation Australian of Macedonian parents, who knew nothing about cricket when they first came to Australia.”Prime Minister’s XI Luke Pomersbach, Brad Hodge, Chris Lynn, Peter Handscomb (wk), Michael Spaseski, Ben Cutting, Brett Lee (capt), James Muirhead, Clive Rose, Jackson Bird, Alister McDermott, Shane Devoy (ACT, 12th man)

Canterbury hold nerve for 10-run win

Round-up of all matches in the Plunket Shield that finished on December 7, 2013

ScorecardMichael Papps’ unbeaten 183 went in vain•Getty Images

An unbeaten 183 from Michael Papps – his 25th first-class ton – took Wellington close to overhauling 470 for a famous win, but the team fell ten runs short against Canterbury in Rangiora.Chasing a mammoth total, Wellington were propelled by a 139-run stand for the fifth wicket between Papps and Luke Woodcock, who made 51. Woodcock departed in the 77th over, but Papps, who struck 26 fours during his innings, carried the innings to 459 with the tail. Papps and Brent Arnel were the last two batsmen at the crease and, having added 37, they seemed to be heading towards an unlikely victory. However, Arnel was bowled by Hamish Bennett, giving Canterbury their second win of the season. Bennett had made a contribution with the ball in the first innings as well, finishing with 4 for 45 to bowl Wellington out for 130 and secure Canterbury a first-innings lead of 93.The reason Wellington had to chase such a big total was due to a century from the Canterbury captain Andrew Ellis in the second innings. His 109 had helped the team to 376 after they had been reduced to 187 for 6. It was a substantial improvement on Canterbury’s first innings, when they were bundled out for 223, with Tom Latham’s 92 being the only big score of note.
ScorecardRain washed out the first two days in Auckland, consigning their game against Central Districts to a draw. The visitors took five points from the contest, while Auckland earned four.Central Districts, who were put in to bat, began their innings on the third day and produced a strong performance. Four of their top five batsmen made half-centuries, with Will Young and Greg Hay making 87 and 83, the top scores of the innings. They declared only on the fourth day, having scored 402 for 7 in 108.5 overs. Michael Bates was the best bowler for Auckland, taking 3 for 61.Auckland’s reply was also strong: their top three made half-centuries. Jeet Raval and Martin Guptill ad a century opening stand, and Anaru Kitchen made 59 at No. 3. Auckland had progressed to 253 for 4 when the game ended in a draw.
ScorecardNorthern Districts and Otago played out a draw in a low-scoring encounter in Whangarei that was marred by rain completely washing out play in the first two days. Northern Districts needed 154 to win, but their chase was stalled by wickets at regular intervals from James Neesham, who finished with 5 for 65. In the end, the team finished at 124 for 7, 30 runs shy of what would have been their second victory of the campaign.Despite the rain delay, Northern Districts will feel that this was a game they perhaps should’ve won, after securing a first-innings lead of 130, thanks to fifties from the openers Brad Wilson and Daniel Flynn, which lifted them to 223. This had followed after Otago, put in to bat, declared at 93 for 6 on the third day, with their top order all making starts, but failing to push on for bigger scores.Otago however fared much better in the second innings, posting 288 thanks to a 92-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Nathan McCullum and Jesse Ryder, who top-scored with 80. Graeme Aldridge was the pick of the bowlers for Northern Districts, finishing with 4 for 50.

Sreesanth's belongings seized – Mumbai Police

Mumbai Police has seized “what appear to be” the belongings of Sreesanth and Jiju Janardhan – both arrested by Delhi Police on spot-fixing allegations – from hotel rooms booked in their names at a five-star hotel in Mumbai. The police has received legal permission to take mirror images of the laptop and also CCTV footage from the hotel to further investigate into the whole scandal.Items seized include laptops, iPads, mobile phones, diaries written in English and “what appears to be” Malayalam, and cricket kits. Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime) in Mumbai, said they had reason to believe the items belonged to Sreesanth and Janardhan, and that they will be important clues in the ongoing investigations.Sreesanth’s room was not in the hotel where the Rajasthan Royals team stayed for their match against Mumbai Indians. Sreesanth was reportedly told in Jaipur that he was not playing the match, and only a compact group of 13 or 14 players was to travel. “Yesterday we received information that Sreesanth had independently booked himself into a five-star hotel,” Roy said. “I say independent because this is not where his team stayed.”We worked out that information. Yesterday we searched two rooms, which were issued in the names of Sreesanth and Jiju Janardhan. The search of Sreesanth’s room shows that it was lived in, it was inhabited. We have recovered a laptop, which is here before you, an iPad, a mobile phone, cash, a data card, some diaries which appear to be in the handwriting of Sreesanth – some [in] English, some [in] what appears to be Malayalam. We have also recovered some cricket kit, clothing etc.”The search of the other room shows it was lived in. We have recovered an iPad, a mobile phone and some personal belongings.” Roy didn’t rule out asking for the custody of Sreesanth and Janardhan depending on what their investigations further reveal.Roy said the hotel rooms were booked by Tamarind Tours and Travels. “We have tried to recreate events that led to the booking of this room,” Roy said. “We have reason to believe Sreeanth and Jiju checked into the hotel late in the night on the 13th of this month. We are recreating their movements on the 14th and the 15th.”We are also in the process of obtaining CCTV feed to understand who are the visitors, if any, who visited him when he was staying there. What were his movements? We have obtained the permission to take a mirror image of the laptops and phones, so that we can begin the process of analysing these gadgets to further aid our investigation. We believe seizure is important given the direction in which the spot-fixing investigations are headed.”On May 14 – more than a day before the three cricketers were arrested – police also arrested an alleged bookmaker called Ramesh Vyas from Mumbai’s Kalbadevi area. The items seized there, Roy said, led them to names of bookies who are also being investigated by Delhi Police.Roy said 13 of the 92 mobile phones seized from Vyas’ premises “were used by him to facilitate connecting Indian bookies with bookies in Pakistan via conference call”. Roy said the police has arrested two more bookies – named Praveen Bera and Pankaj Shah (alias Lotus, alias Pappu) – subsequent to that first arrest.”The interrogation of Ramesh Vyas revealed that he was in touch with certain bookies whose names had figured in the current IPL fixing issue,” Roy said. “We followed this lead, and we also found that the same bookies not only figure in calls made by Ramesh Vyas, but his account books also have transactions in them that lead to common bookies.”After we arrested Ramesh Vyas, we recovered his accounts book, which showed names of bookies that the Delhi Police is also investigating. Some of those bookies, it is reported, have been in touch with these players.”Cases have been registered under the Gambling Act and Indian Penal Code sections that pertain to cheating and forgery. All charges are non-bailable, Roy said.

Sami among wickets as Karachi trounce Lahore

Group A

Mohammad Sami picked up three wickets for Karachi Dolphins as his side romped home to a 103-run win over Lahore Eagles. Sami dismissed three key batsmen as Lahore finished at 206 for 9 in response to Karachi’s tall score of 309 for 3.Karachi were sent in to bat and the top four batsmen responded with half-centuries. The openers, Shahzaib Hasan and Khalid Latif, also chipped in, scoring 63 and 64 respectively. An unbeaten 72 from Razeem Alam and fifties by Zeeshan Ashraf and Sohaib Maqsood helped Multan Tigers coast to a seven-wicket win over Bahawalpur Stags. Chasing a target of 265, Multan’s impressive batting took them home with five overs to spare. Ashraf and Maqsood led the way, adding 105 runs for the second wicket before Alam wrapped up the chase.Earlier, Bahawalpur who chose to bat, made 264, thanks largely to half-centuries from Bilal Khilji and captain Kamran Hussain who consolidated the innings after a dismal start. Offspinner Aamer Yamin was the most impressive bowler for Multan, finishing with figures of 5 for 65, his first five-wicket haul.Hyderabad Hawks registered a massive, 150-run win over Quetta Bears, riding on centuries from Azeem Ghumman and Rizwan Ahmed and a five-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Kashif Bhatti.Ghumman and Ahmed shared a stand of 144 for the second wicket, taking their side to 260 for 2. In reply, the Quetta innings folded for a meager 110 in 33.5 overs. Taimur Ali was the only batsman to make more than 30 as the Hyderabad bowling, led by Bhatti, dominated. Bhatti finished with figures of 5 for 30, while Ghulam Yasin and Zahid Mahmood picked up two wickets apiece.

Group B

An all-round performance from captain Khalid Usman helped Abbotabad Falcons beat Peshawar Panthers by 45 runs. Usman took 3 for 31 with his left-arm spin as Peshawar folded for 174 in reply to Abbotabad’s total of 219.Earlier Abbotabad, who chose to bat first, were tottering at 139 for 8 before Usman batted well with the lower order to take the score to 219. He scored 80 off 94 balls, including four fours and two sixes.Karachi Zebras registered an emphatic 92-run win over Lahore Lions. Opener Fakhar Zaman scored a quick century for Karachi and was ably supported by captain Faisal Iqbal as Karachi posted 314 for 6. The pair added 158 for the third wicket to effectively bat Lahore out of the match. In reply, Lahore were dismissed for 222 in the 45th over. The Lahore reply was shaky and although captain Azhar Ali and Fahad-ul-Haq tried to build the innings, the Karachi bowlers struck regularly to restrict them. Fast bowler Rumman Raees picked up three wickets for 21 runs for Karachi.A century from opener Awais Zia and an unbeaten 54 from Yasim Murtaza, who later picked up three wickets, set up a 66-run win for Rawalpindi Rams against Islamabad Leopards. Zia and Murtaza powered their side to a commanding 338 for 7.In reply, Islamabad fell short in spite of a hundred from Babar Azam, and were kept to 272 for 9. The chase began strongly but lost momentum after a cluster of wickets fell towards the end of the innings. Murtaza picked up 3 for 49, while Akhtar Ayub and Hammad Azam took two wickets each.
