Jones in line to make England debut at Lord`s

Darren Gough today pulled out of the 1st Test against India at Lord`s after suffering pain and stiffness in his troublesome right knee during Yorkshire’s Championship match against Lancashire

Andrew Hignell22-Jul-2002Darren Gough today pulled out of the 1st Test against India at Lord`s after suffering pain and stiffness in his troublesome right knee during Yorkshire’s Championship match against Lancashire. This could be good news for Glamorgan pace bowler Simon Jones who had been included in the original 13 man party for the Test at Lord`s.When announcing the squad, England`s Chairman of Selectors David Graveney gave a strong hint that 23-year-old Jones would make his debut should Gough prove to be unfit. Following Gough`s withdrawl, the selectors will be meeting to consider calling up a replacement, but with other pace bowlers either out of form or injured, Simon Jones could be making his England debut on Thursday, and following in his father Jeff`s footsteps by winning his first England cap before winning his Glamorgan one.Jeff Jones won the first of his 15 Tests caps on the 1963-64 M.C.C. tour to India by appearing in the 2nd Test of the series at the Brabourne Stadium in Bombay. Glamorgan fan`s will be hoping that Simon Jones enjoys more luck than his father did back in January 1964, as he bowled 24 overs without taking a wicket and it was not until December 30th, 1965 that Jones senior claimed his maiden Test wicket, bowling Peter Burge at Melbourne in the second Test of the 1965/66 Ashes series.

Wolves in talks to sign Jose Sa

Bruno Lage has only been in charge of Wolverhampton Wanderers for a matter of hours but he’s already begun work on his first signing at Molineux.

With a number of players potentially heading for the exit door, he’s had to move swiftly in order to identify replacements.

What’s the word?

Taking to Twitter in the aftermath of Lage’s arrival, renowned reporter Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Wolves were in talks to sign Jose Sa.

The Old Gold are in danger of losing Rui Patricio to Roma and are trying to land the Olympiacos goalkeeper as his replacement.

Sa is rated at just £6.7m by Transfermarkt so could be a bargain for Wolves in the transfer market.

Lage may be forced to spend smaller fees in the window this summer due to a lack of finances at Molineux.

Capable replacement

This move would tick all of the boxes if you’re Fosun and Jeff Shi.

Sa is Portuguese, a client of Jorge Mendes and is one of the most underrated goalkeepers in Europe.

The 28-year-old initially caught the eye of Wolves all the way back in 2019 after a string of impressive performances in the Champions League.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-guedes-toney-shaqiri-neves” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

Olympiacos lost 2-0 to Bayern Munich but it would have been a lot worse if it wasn’t for Sa who produced a mind-boggling nine saves. It was a performance that earned congratulations from a certain Manuel Neuer, who was quick to applaud his opposite number.

Sa is still playing in the Greek league and his numbers this term are actually more impressive than Patricio’s.

The Wolves ‘keeper had a clean sheet ratio of just 27% this term which was streets behind his potential replacement who kept 51.7% in the league.

His displays caught the eye in Europe again, producing a save success rate of 77.4% in the group stages of the Champions League.

Once more, this statistic usurps Patricio who saved 68.6% of his shots in the English top-flight.

Standing at a colossal height of 6 foot 4, Sa also has a bigger reach than the 33-year-old Wolves stalwart.

Portugal’s number 1 stands an inch shorter which could make all the difference when saving shots heading for the corner or when coming out to claim crosses and set plays.

With Wolves lacking financial muscle this summer, getting the Olympiacos star would be a smart piece of business.

Emi Buendia may snub Villa for Arsenal

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has been handed a major blow as fresh news emerges on their transfer battle with Arsenal over Norwich’s Emi Buendia.

What’s the story?

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece had initially revealed via Twitter: “I’ve just been told Villa & Arsenal both lodged bids yesterday. Emi Buendia currently with Emi Martinez ahead of Argentina’s #WCQ with Chile at 1am UK time. Contact has informed me that Buendia knows of #AVFC and Arsenal interest.”

However, according to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Villa have suffered a major setback in their pursuit of the Argentine.

Via his official Twitter account, he revealed: “#Arsenal and #AstonVilla have made formal bids for Emiliano #Buendia. The player’s priority is Arsenal.”

Fans will be gutted

The battle between Villa and Arsenal to see who signs Buendia this summer promised to be a real measuring point of just how far Smith’s side have come in such a short space of time.

You only have to think back to this time last year when the Midlands club were fighting to stave off relegation back to the Championship, and Arsenal were heading for FA Cup glory, that the two wouldn’t be in competition with another.

Alas, such has been Villa’s sharp rise that there may have real confidence from Villa fans that Buendia would turn down the Gunners and choose them, especially given the exciting project on which they’re currently embarking under Smith.

Instead, Konur’s claim that Buendia’s “priority” is Arsenal is a hammer blow, not just because of the kind of player they would be missing out on, but also that they seem to have lost the chance to make a massive statement to the rest of the Premier League and beyond.

Villa fans must be absolutely gutted with the latest update on Buendia.

Meanwhile, Dean Smith is eyeing up this Premier League striker…

A escalação teve: Fernando Prass; Jean, Antônio Carlos, Thiago Martins e Zé Roberto; Felipe Melo; Róger Guedes, Tchê Tchê, Raphael Veiga e Dudu; Alecsandro.

Journalist shares Carter-Vickers development

Writing on Twitter, journalist and BBC broadcaster Kris Temple has lifted the lid on a significant transfer development involving Tottenham Hotspur and defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

The Lowdown: Carter-Vickers at the Cherries…

Bournemouth signed the USA international on a season-long loan at the beginning of 2020/2021, and he went on to have a pretty successful spell on the south coast.

Indeed, the 23-year-old started 23 Championship games for the Cherries and was an assured, reliable presence in their backline when handed the nod – forcing the most offsides per 90 out of any player in the squad and making the joint-second most blocks (WhoScored).

The Latest: Journalist shares big Carter-Vickers development

Bringing the latest on his future, journalist Temple now believes that the second tier side have made contact with Tottenham over securing the defender on a permanent basis.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/all-things-spurry/” title=”Spurs news and gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Bournemouth have apparently been so impressed with Carter-Vickers they now wish to make him a permanent Cherries star.

“I can report that #AFCB have made contact with @SpursOfficial about signing defender @cameroncv2 on a permanent basis,” Temple explained on Twitter.

“CCV’s loan spell from Spurs has expired.”

The Verdict: Time to go…

While Carter-Vickers has impressed for Bournemouth, it’s arguably unlikely he has a future in north London and now may be the right time to let him go.

The centre-back made his first team debut for Spurs in the Carabao Cup back in 2016 and has gone on to feature just three more times for the Lilywhites in all competitions since then (Transfermarkt).

Given Spurs may need to adopt a sell-to-buy policy this summer as they aim to rebuild their squad and prepare for life under a new manager, Carter-Vickers is definitely a player worth offloading for some much-needed finances.

His stock will be higher than ever after a successful season at the Vitality Stadium and chairman Daniel Levy should definitely look to cash-in.

Brandon Williams tipped for Norwich City transfer - exclusive

It has been a frustrating season for Brandon Williams who has had to deal with injury problems as well as the sensational resurgence of Luke Shaw so to stop his career from stagnating, Norwich legend Jon Newsome believes that the Canaries could be the perfect club for him to move to.

Williams, who was hailed as “exciting” by Gary Lineker last year, has only been handed two starts in the Premier League this season and with Shaw and Alex Telles ahead of him in the pecking order, links have emerged suggesting that the Canaries could be in line to swoop in for him on a season-long loan deal.

The Manchester United academy graduate was close to sealing a move away in January for the second half of the season as Newcastle United wanted him but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refused to let him leave because of a lack of cover.

The 20-year old made a name for himself last season making 38 appearances in all competitions but this season has proved to be a stumbling block, something that Norwich could help him get over, something Newsome spoke exclusively to The Transfer Tavern about:

“I think Brandon Williams going out and playing some regular football elsewhere is exactly what both himself and Man United would want. So, it could be a very good fit.”

During their title-winning season, Norwich had three recognised left-backs on their books but Jacob Lungi Sörensen is the only one that will certainly be there next season as both Dimitrios Giannoulis and Xavi Quintilla will return to their parent clubs this summer.

Sörensen made 32 appearances for the Canaries but it is likely that Daniel Farke would find it difficult to turn down the opportunity of bringing in Williams, even if it was temporary if it meant Norwich stayed in the Premier League.

THFC: Stone drops ESL update

In recent comments, the BBC’s Simon Stone revealed that Tottenham Hotspur and the five other breakaway Premier League clubs remain unified in their desire to join the European Super League.

According to Stone’s report for the BBC (11:25), despite “all the strong statements” in objection to the European Super League,” there is “no weakening of resolve” amongst Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in joining the newly formed league.

Stone continues by stating that that, from the perspective of the clubs, the proposals have been “thought through” and will “benefit the game as a whole,” with the sides involved said to simply be “waiting for the storm to die down.”

He said: “I have just spoken to someone who is close to the clubs concerned and they were adamant there is no weakening of resolve within the six English clubs who have signed up to ESL.”

Transfer Tavern Take

Stone’s remarks appear to directly contradict the reports that both Chelsea and Manchester City are beginning to waver in their commitment to the European Super League following the widespread backlash from the football community.

Indeed, Dan Roan recently claimed on Twitter that sources have informed him the reports of Chelsea and City’s doubts were nothing more than “mischief-making,” and that the “rebel alliance remains firm.”

As such, at this very moment, it would appear as if Tottenham, alongside the other five breakaway clubs, are still set to take part in the European Super League, regardless of the continuing backlash from both the fans and media.

Rangers suffer Filip Helander injury blow

Steven Gerrard has suffered a significant injury blow at Rangers ahead of the Old Firm derby at Ibrox on Sunday, with Filip Helander ruled out for the remainder of the season.

The Sweden international was forced off in the cup defeat against St Johnstone last time out and Gerrard has now confirmed that the defender will miss the rest of the campaign through injury.

The 28-year-old has been a key fixture alongside Connor Goldson at the back for the Light Blues this season, so to have him missing for their most important remaining fixture is undoubtedly a blow for Gerrard.

It is awful timing too, as Leon Balogun is also currently sidelined through injury, whilst fellow defenders Calvin Bassey and Nathan Patterson are suspended, which suggests that the inexperienced Jack Simpson will start at centre-back on Sunday.

Rangers need to avoid defeat in their three remaining fixtures to finish the league season unbeaten and Sunday’s game against Celtic will certainly be a tough challenge for Gerrard’s side, as the Hoops will be desperate to ensure that their rivals don’t earn the honour of going invincible.

John Kennedy’s side will perhaps be a lot more confident now that Helander is missing, as the former Bologna man has been one of the most consistent performers for Rangers so far this season. Across 21 top-flight appearances, Helander has contributed one goal and averaged an impressive 7.11 WhoScored average match rating, which ranks him as Rangers’ seventh-best performer so far this season.

Considering that the centre-back has been linked with a move away ahead of the summer and reportedly wants a shot at playing in the Premier League, he may well have already played his last game for the club after being ruled out for the final three league matches.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Gerrard will perhaps be worried that, in the absence of two of his most experienced central defenders, Celtic could cause an upset and bring an end to Rangers’ unbeaten record, especially after two consecutive disappointing performances against St Johnstone.
