Leeds United returned to the summit of the Championship table on Saturday afternoon with an excellent 2-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers at Elland Road.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side secured all three points thanks to goals from Tyler Roberts and Jack Harrison.

The latter was the provider for the first as he teed up the 20-year-old with an accurate pass on the edge of the area before he pounced on a defensive mistake in the visiting backline to slam home an effort of his own eight minutes from time.

Roberts was starting his first game of the season, having been restricted to five substitute appearances to date, and fans appear to be delighted with his impact.

One member of the Whites faithful believes the forward being back is like having a new signing at the club, claiming that he will only get better as the season goes on while another labelled him a ‘class act.’

A further supporter stated that the youngster was exactly what Bielsa has needed since Samuel Saiz left the club.

West Brom managed to keep their throne atop the Championship table on Saturday afternoon but needed late, late heroics to do so as they defeated Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Baggies substitute Hal Robson-Kanu, who signed a contract extension during the week, popped up with the winner just eight minutes from time.

The 30-year-old was on hand to tap home the ball at the back post following a goalmouth scramble.

Slaven Bilic’s men managed to hang on to move two points clear of second-placed Leeds United, who are the only team to defeat Albion this season.

In the heart of midfield, Jake Livermore continued his fine form, as if he has been given a new lease of life under the Croatian.

The addition of Romaine Sawyers during the summer has certainly brought the best out of him as he’s been able to play his more natural style, instead of carrying the older duo of Gareth Barry and Chris Brunt on his legs alone.

This performance has to be up there with one of the best we’ve seen from the 29-year-old this season, and maybe over the past 18 months or so.

Per SofaScore, Livermore managed to record a 92% passing accuracy, which was aided by him completing three of his four long balls. He also managed five tackles, two blocked shots, and even fired off two of his own.

In the process, he offered something no other Albion midfielder does as Sawyers failed to make a single tackle.

It is his presence in the centre of the pitch that is so needed in a Bilic side – his fast-tempo and passing style of football often requires the smaller, enigmatic type of players like Grady Diangana or Matheus Pereira, who if you could find a weak point in their game, it would be their lack of physicality.

And that is what the seven-time England midfielder can offer as displayed by him winning five of his eight ground duels. This is further backed up by Express & Star journalist Joe Masi, who labelled Livermore as ‘commanding’ and that he is ‘physically so important to this team.’

The former Tottenham Hotspur man is just so integral to Bilic’s midfield, especially after performances like that.

وقال دي بور في تصريحات عبر “NOS TV” الهولندية عقب نهاية المباراة: “الدقائق العشرين الأولى خلال المباراة كانت صعبة للغاية”.

وأضاف: “بعد ذلك تمكنا من صنع الفرص، لكننا لم نتمكن من وضع الكرة في الشباك، لذلك بدا الأمر مُحبطًا بعض الشيء، لكننا كُنا نعرف أنّ الأمور ستقع في مكانها الصحيح في النهاية”.

وأتم: “في الشوط الثاني، التبديلات ساعتنا كثيرًا، فينالدوم وجرافينبيرش ساعدنا كثيرًا، وأنا سعيد للغاية بهذه النتيجة”

There’s only one way to describe the utter tripe that befell our eyes on Monday night and that is ‘tragic.’

Manchester United versus Arsenal is not what it once was.

Indeed, it feels like forever since Roy Keane and Patrick Viera, two of the fiercest rivals, were battling it out for the Premier League title. But maybe that’s because we’ve been left with Ashley Young and Granit Xhaka, two of the most painfully average players, squabbling over who’s going to claim the Europa League spots.

The uneventful draw was emblematic of the kind of performance we’ve come to expect from United under Solskjaer since he was gifted the permanent job: conservative, ineffective, lethargic at times yet applauded.

Individual performances were poor as well, barring Man of the Match Scott McTominay.

Rashford scuppered enough chances again, including one put on a plate by Paul Pogba, to further hammer home the fact that he’s not the no.9 United need. Jesse Lingard did some running, but no goals and assists tell you everything, and the onus was once again thrust onto the fledgling shoulders of Daniel James, forever a willing runner.

Former Liverpool player El-Hadj Diouf believes Sadio Mane and Mo Salah have created an ideal partnership at Anfield.

What did he say?

Since Salah arrived on Merseyside the pair have contributed 123 goals and 45 assists for Jurgen’s Klopp team, guiding them to the Champions League title as well as their highest-ever Premier League points total.

The contribution they have made has seen both recognised in the PFA and UEFA squads of the season over the last two years, and the pair have also finished in the top two of the African Player of the Year award for consecutive seasons.

Diouf, a fellow winner of the award and compatriot of Mane, is very impressed by what he has seen from the duo, and believes they provide the ideal complement to one another.

“You can’t have one without the other. One of them’s left-footed [Salah] and the other’s right-footed [Mane]. Sadio needs Mo like Mo needs Sadio,” Diouf told FIFA’s website.

“They have the same qualities: speed of execution and skill in their final touch. Salah is perhaps a little more effective in front of goal because he puts in less defensive work than Mane.”

The former Senegal international makes an interesting point about the two needing each other, as Liverpool have rarely been in a situation where they have been unable to field both players at the same time.

One memorable occasion in which Salah was missing, however, was in the Champions League semi-final second leg, but the Reds were still able to defeat Barcelona 4-0, due in part to the contribution of Mane.

Pace and power

It is easy to see why Diouf has made a comparison between the two and they do play in a similar fashion for Liverpool, which works very effectively for Jurgen Klopp.

Despite both possessing tremendous pace neither are best suited to taking the ball past defenders, and instead prefer running in behind to get onto the end of through balls. They averaged a combined 3.5 dribbles per match in the Premier League last season – just 0.1 more than Wilfried Zaha managed single handed.

Also, due to playing on either wing Salah and Mane don’t often link up directly. With Roberto Firmino acting as the perfect lynchpin in the middle, both players are able to stay in the respective positions to get on the end of chances.

As a result, Diouf’s assessment is perhaps a little misguided. Liverpool don’t rely on their partnership and therefore the pair don’t rely on each other, but it is instead the presence of both which makes the Reds so effective, as the team possesses the same type of threat from both wings.

Aston Villa didn’t kick off their Premier League return in winning fashion but there were plenty of positives to take from the game.

Beginning your first top-flight campaign in three seasons against the Champions League runners-up, Tottenham Hotspur was never going to be an easy task.

Villa took the lead and looked competent for large periods of the game but it was a mistake from club captain Jack Grealish, who was caught on the ball close to his own box, that cost the Villans a goal.

Following the match, he tweeted his thoughts:

A number of Villa supporters reacted by throwing their weight behind the 23-year-old and the team.

One fan said it was because of him that the club are in the Premier League playing Champions League opposition rather than playing a team of Luton Town’s calibre whilst another added that it was a brilliant effort to keep them at bay for 75 minutes.

Others asked the midfielder to prove people wrong with one supporter claiming that it was a learning curve, using the old cliche that Rome wasn’t built in a day in comparison to Villa’s ambitions.

After a promising start to the season, Arsenal were brought back down to earth with a bang against Liverpool on Saturday evening.

The Reds claimed a 3-1 victory and were easily the better of the two teams. Mohamed Salah was on good form, netting twice, with Joel Matip scoring the other for the Anfield outfit. Only Lucas Torreira could respond for the visitors.

There were few positives for Unai Emery to take from the game, but one of them was the performance of Nicolas Pepe.

The Ivory Coast international was making his first appearance in the Gunners’ starting XI since signing from Lille in the summer, and he was the team’s best performer in the initial line-up.

Arsenal only managed three shots on target throughout the match and Pepe had two of them. He will have been disappointed not to do better with the one-on-one situation he found himself in during the first half, but he was still one of the few players who managed to get themselves into such a position.

The seven dribbles he completed was not only five higher than any of his teammates, but was also the most of any player on the pitch. Between them, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah only managed five.

In terms of crosses, it was a similar story, at least in the Arsenal team. The 24-year-old provided four balls into the box, two more than anyone else on his side. Meanwhile, his passing accuracy of 91.7% was only bettered by Sokratis in a black shirt.

It wasn’t all good news though. He did only manage to create one chance, and Emery will certainly be expecting more from the wide man – he needs to be more of a creative force. However, for his first start for the club, it was an impressive display, and provides a much-needed positive from defeat against such formidable opponents.

علّق وليد صلاح الدين قائد الأهلي الأسبق على مباراة القلعة الحمراء المقبلة أمام الدحيل في منافسات كأس العالم للأندية.

الأهلي يلتقي الدحيل القطري بعد غدٍ الخميس في السابعة والنصف مساء بتوقيت القاهرة الثامنة والنصف مساء بتوقيت الدوحة.

وقال وليد صلاح الدين في تصريحات إذاعية عبر آثير “أون سبورت إف إم”: “مباراة الأهلي والدحيل المقبلة ستكون صعبة للغاية، والفريق القطري يمتلك عدد كبير من اللاعبين والنجوم المتميزين”.

وتابع: “أصعب ما في مباراة الفريقين أنها الأولى لهما بجانب وجود الجماهير وهو ما يشكل ضغط على لاعبي الأهلي وجهد مضاعف”.

وأردف: “وحلم وصول الأهلي إلى نصف النهائي وتخطي الدحيل ومواجهة البايرن مشروع للغاية لأنها تعد مناسبة لا تكرر كثيرًا”.

أكد يورجن كلوب مدرب ليفربول أن ثقته في اللاعبين لم تتزعزع، رغم النتائج السيئة التي يعانون منها في الفترة الحالية.

وجاءت تصريحات كلوب بعد الخروج من بطولة كأس الاتحاد الإنجليزي على يد مانشستر يونايتد مساء اليوم.

وأضاف الألماني: “نحن لسنا في وضع مثالي بنسبة 100 %، لكن لا داعِ للقلق بشأننا، نحن مجموعة معًا، نحن نعلم ذلك، إذا كانت لدي مشكلة، فلدينا جميعًا مشكلة، إذا واجه لاعب واحد مشكلة، فلدينا مشكلة”.

وواصل: “هذه هي مشكلتنا في الوقت الحالي، لذا يتعين علينا مناقشتها معًا وهذا ما سنفعله، لا أحد يفكر في الأشياء الجيدة جدًا التي حدثت في السنوات القليلة الماضية، لا أحد، نحن في هذه اللحظة الراهنة، نحاول الفوز بالمباريات، هذا كل شيء”.

وتابع: “الليلة لم أر أي مشاكل في الثقة، لكن ما قلناه هو أنه عندما لا تسجل لفترة من الوقت فهذا ليس جيدًا للثقة، هذا أمر واضح، يمكن لأفضل المهاجمين في العالم أن يخبروك أن لديهم جميعًا لحظات لم يسجلوا فيها، لكن الأمر كله يتعلق بكيفية التعامل معها، نحن بصدد بذلك، صدقني”.
