Celtic: Fans react to Diego Costa report

Celtic have made an approach for former Chelsea striker Diego Costa, according to French football website Homme du Match.

And, as to be expected, a number of Hoops supporters have been giving their thoughts to the links on social media.

Homme du Match claim that both Celtic and Crystal Palace have approached the Spanish forward, who is still a free agent after having his Atletico Madrid contract terminated last December.

Costa, who will turn 33 in October, is sponsored by Adidas, as are Celtic following a five-year agreement last March.

The striker has been on more than £150,000-a-week since 2015, so from the outside looking in, a move appears to be an ambitious one, especially with the Hoops’ top earner on just £20,000-a-week.

Celtic fans react

Homme du Match posted the news on Twitter on Friday evening. Plenty of Celtic fans were quick to reply to the post, with many all for a potential move and one describing a possible deal as ‘brilliant’.

Two points and momentum on the line

Cricinfo previews the Group B Asia Cup clash between Pakistan and India

The Preview by S Rajesh25-Jun-2008Match factsThursday June 26, 2008
Start time 16.00 (local) 10.00 (GMT)
Salman Butt didn’t score a run against Hong Kong, but his record against India is formidable © Getty Images
Big PictureBoth Pakistan and India recorded comprehensive victories against Hong Kong – as they were expected to – and despite an assured rematch later on in the tournament a lot rests on Thursday’s match. The winning team carries forward two points from this match into the semi-final league. Moreover, an India-Pakistan match always comes with its own pressures and expectations, and both teams would want to carry forward valuable momentum to go with the two points. The two teams have played more often recently, and India have had the better of the exchanges, winning nine out of 14 since 2006. However, Pakistan turned the tables on them in the Kitply Cup a couple of weeks back, losing the league game but winning the final. On paper India are the stronger team, with their batting, especially, looking in much better shape than Pakistan’s. The home team’s top order struggled against Hong Kong’s limited bowling resources, and Shoaib Malik will want a much better performance on Thursday. Both teams, though, will gladly trade a defeat here for a win in the round-robin clash.Form guide (Last 5 completed ODIs; most recent first)
Pakistan WWLWW
India LWWWWWatch out for …Salman Butt: He was dismissed for a third-ball duck on Tuesday against Hong Kong, but India are his favourite opposition: Butt averages 52.93 against them, and five of his seven ODI hundreds have come against the Indians.Yuvraj Singh was rested on Wednesday, but expect him to be among the runs against an opponent he loves to play: he averages 48.58 against Pakistan, and has scored half-centuries in each of his last five innings against them.Team newsIndia rested Yuvraj and Ishant Sharma against Hong Kong, but expect both to get a game against Pakistan. Rohit Sharma, who scored a listless 29-ball 11, could well be benched. Irfan Pathan’s side strain kept him out of the first game, and if he clears a fitness test, Yusuf Pathan might sit out.India (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Robin Uthappa, 7 Irfan Pathan, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 RP Singh, 11 Ishant Sharma.Pakistan are most likely to field the same team which beat Hong Kong, but with not too much at stake in the game, this might be the perfect opportunity to tinker with the batting order and push Shahid Afridi up the order to open the batting. He has struggled lower down the order, and a move up might just do the trick.Pakistan (probable) 1 Salman Butt, 2 Shahid Afridi, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Fawad Alam, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Sohail Tanvir, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Iftikhar Anjum.Stats and trivia The last time Pakistan lost to India in an Asia Cup game was way back in October 1988. Since then, they have won three times while one game was washed out. India also have a good winning streak going against Pakistan at the National Stadium in Karachi, winning their last three matches against them here. The last time they lost to Pakistan at this ground was in January 1983. Shoaib Malik’s only Asia Cup game against India was a memorable one: he scored 143 – his highest ODI score – and took 2 for 42 as Pakistan won by 42 runs in Colombo in 2004.Quotes”A little difference is made from playing so often but in both our countries, crowds want a win all the time. There is a little more pressure on us being at home, but we are confident going into the India game.”
Shoaib Malik says his team is ready for another tussle with their old rivals”The beauty is that when we used to play less, people used to complain. Now we play more, people complain. But it’s not up to us; it’s the boards’ job to make schedules, it’s the cricketer’s job to play.”

Wolves concede vs Coventry

Loads of Wolves fans have been left fuming as they conceded a penalty in their pre-season game against Coventry City.

As tweeted by The Athletic journalist Tim Spiers, a penalty was conceded against the EFL Championship club after Ki-Jana Hoever was ‘sucked into trouble’ and ended up bundling one of their players over.

Martyn Waghorn eventually beat John Ruddy from the spot and made the score 2-1, meaning that the Midlands club had to nervously hold on to victory.

Of course, no supporter wants to see their side conceding goals, but Hoever gifted Coventry the opportunity to score from the penalty spot quite cheaply, and those kind of errors are what Bruno Lage will want to cut out ahead of the new 2021/22 Premier League season.

These WWFC supporters were left fuming as the news of the penalty being conceded was shared by Spiers on his Twitter page, with one Wanderer even going as far as to claim that it was ‘typical’:

Leeds on the verge of signing Amari Miller

Leeds United are on the verge of signing exciting Birmingham City youngster Amari Miller following an update from journalist Mike McGrath.

The Lowdown: Miller linked with Leeds move

Marcelo Bielsa may well be looking to sign experienced players who can immediately become key figures in the team this summer, but he will also hopefully be looking to the years ahead.

While Leeds’ current rise is hugely exciting for supporters, it is vital that the club plan well into the future, ensuring their upward curve doesn’t end abruptly.

Miller, who fits the bill in that respect, has been linked with a move to Elland Road numerous times recently, having shone at Birmingham and made five first team appearances at St Andrew’s.

The Latest: Deal edges closer

According to The Daily Telegraph’s McGrath on Twitter, the 18-year-old has not travelled with his Birmingham teammates for their pre-season trip to Scotland.

It is noted that that is because of Miller’s impending move to Leeds, even though Tottenham, Everton and Southampton have also shown an interest in signing him.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-6/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Hugely exciting prospect

Snapping up emerging homegrown talent is generally a positive development and it will be fascinating to see how Miller fares working under Bielsa.

Birmingham boss Lee Bowyer has claimed of the teenager that ‘senior players love him’, so it looks as though the Whites may have a gem on their hands if they can get this transfer over the line.

Assuming the deal goes through, a loan move elsewhere could be likely next season, but hopefully it may not be too long before Leeds fans get to see what all the fuss is about.

South Africa too professional for Pakistan

Herschelle Gibbs scored his seventh career century as South Africa outclassed Pakistan by 54 runs in the first match of the Morocco Cup Monday.Gibbs struck a flawless 114 and nullified Waqar Younis’s five for 38 to propel South Africa to an imposing 283 for nine. Pakistan, in their turn, never succeeded in building partnerships and were finally dismissed for 229.It was an excellent allround performance by the South Africans who were initially expected to be rusty after coming from the four-month lay-off. In their last assignment, there were routed by the Australians in both the Tests and one-day series. For Pakistan, it must be a timely wake-up call as they have entered into the competition as odds-on favourites after having won everything this year, including a 2-1 victory over Australia in the Super Challenge-II.When Shaun Pollock decided to make first use of the wicket after winning the toss, many thought he had made a mistake as the pitch was new and nobody was convinced how it would behave. And although Gary Kirsten was a victim to double paced wicket, the South Africans kept their cool. Gibbs controlled the proceedings and rest of the players just provided him the support from the other end by rotating the strike.South Africa were on course for a 300 plus score when Gibbs and Jonty Rhodes were batting. But a late charge by Waqar restricted South Africa to 283 when he picked three of his five wickets in the death overs.Gibbs struck everything from the centre of the willow and produced eight exquisite boundaries. High winds in the open area also allowed him to fetch three elegant sixes that had all the timing and minimum of power.Gibbs featured in two fruitful partnerships. For the third wicket with Nicky Boje (52), he added85 off 82 balls while for the fourth wicket with Rhodes (46), he put on 120 runs from 112 balls.Gibbs completed his century in style when he hit Saqlain Mushtaq gracefully and against the spin for a boundary. He picked up a boundary and a six off successive balls in the same over.Besides a disappointing performance from Saqlain, Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq were also below-par, although it would be unjustified to blame Afridi because he is not a specialist bowler. He is a batsma-cum-bowler but the team management is bent upon making him a bowler-cum-batsman.When Pakistan batted in better and warmer conditions, Saeed Anwar and Imran Nazir provided them a good start when they posted 55 before things started to go wrong.Imran was worth watching when he played glorious drives during his 31-ball knock that produced nine boundaries. He scored 40 before being trapped in front of the wickets by Jacques Kallis who also accounted for Saeed.Afridi threw his bat around and picked up three fours and a six in his 29-ball 34 but he was fighting for a lost cause. Pakistan slim hopes ended when Rashid Latif was adjudged leg before by nudging the ball down the fine-leg and a couple of balls later Abdul Razzaq had his stumps shattered by Allan Donald.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Grealish report

Manchester City are ready to better the Premier League transfer record in order to sign Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish, as reported by The Mirror.

Enjoying a fantastic 2020/21 season, the 25-year-old notched an impressive 19 goal contributions from 27 games for the Villans, with seven goals and 12 assists [Transfermarkt]. Earning adulation for his outstanding exploits, he was nominated for the Premier League Player of the Season award at the beginning of this month [avfc.co.uk].

However, he now looks set to court serious attention from the Citizens as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of their defence of the Premier League title.

Manchester City are said to be so keen to get Grealish through the door that they are willing to surpass the £90m fee Manchester United shelled out for Paul Pogba back in 2016 [The Mirror].

As you can imagine, loads of Aston Villa fans took to Twitter to voice their dismay at recent developments.

Ashley on Newcastle takeover arbitration

Mark Douglas has dropped an update about what Mike Ashley has told the Newcastle United takeover consortium about his arbitration case against the Premier League.

The Lowdown: Arbitration soon

The arbitration case between the St. James’ Park faithful and the English top flight is seemingly not far away at all, as Sky Sports and North-East based journalist Keith Downie has reported that it is expected to start at the end of June.

Ashley has also launched a separate anti-competition claim against the Premier League over their decision-making process in the failed deal between himself and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group, which he is thought to be keeping in his back pocket in case the results of the arbitration hearing do not go in his favour.

The Latest: Ashley briefs consortium

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Tyneside club journalist, and takeover follower Douglas, has shared that Ashley has briefed the consortium to ‘have their ducks in a row’ in case a quick resolution can be reached as a result of arbitration.

The chief executive of Sports Direct feels as if he has a ‘good chance’ of winning the case, and so he wants the consortium to be ready in case the takeover process can be accelerated if the result goes his way.

The Verdict: Arbitration vital

The result of arbitration is vital if there is any hope of the original takeover bid being revived.

If results go in Ashley’s favour, then his separate anti-competition lawsuit would not be needed, and he can fully concentrate on getting his deal with the consortium back on track.

The timing is certainly not ideal, as the summer transfer window has already opened and the new 2021/22 season is set to begin in August, but in theory, a takeover could still be completed not long after arbitration, which would give the Magpies the best possible preparation going into the new campaign.

Nonetheless, the Toon will ideally not want to go into the new term with uncertainty, and so it is vital for them that the arbitration is completed as quickly as possible, with the results hopefully going their way.

West Ham now want to sign Yaremchuk

According to a report by the Daily Express, West Ham United now want Ukraine striker Roman Yaremchuk and it is believed he will ‘push hard’ for his next move this summer.

The Lowdown: West Ham and the striker chase…

Manager David Moyes reportedly has three main priorities in this summer window, namely a permanent deal for 2020/2021 loan sensation Jesse Lingard, a star centre-back and the acquisition of a new striker (Claret & Hugh).

Of the strikers linked in recent months, many have been named, including the likes of Tammy Abraham, Youssef En-Nesyri, Ivan Toney and Adam Armstrong (ExWHUemployee).

Many others are now coming out of the woodwork as the transfer window opens, with Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah most recently linked as well (Fabrizio Romano).

The Latest: West Ham now want Yaremchuk…

As per the Daily Express, West Ham are now eyeing a move for Euro 2020 star Yaremchuk with the 25-year-old now falling into consideration on Moyes’ striker shortlist.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed he will ‘push hard’ for his next move this summer after having a stellar season with current club Gent.

Yaremchuk bagged 17 goals in the Belgian Pro League last season and stands at a towering 6 foot 3 – potentially marking him out as a good fit for the physicality of the Premier League.

The Verdict: Solid option…

The summer window is still young and West Ham will want to assess the best possible forward options before making any concrete swoops.

Yaremchuk emerges as a potentially fruitful name to enter the fray going by his stance on an exit this summer and fairly impressive tally in front of goal over 20/21 – having managed 23 strikes in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Valued at around £13.5 million by Transfermarkt, he could also prove to be a less expensive alternative to the likes of Abraham who may cost around £40m by comparison.

Bangladesh's First Away Test: a Postmortem

In January, this year, I asked Wayne Philips, the former test cricketer and the present coach of CBCA cricket academy, to comment on Bangladesh’s getting the test status

Shahryar Khan26-Apr-2001In January, this year, I asked Wayne Philips, the former test cricketer and the present coach of CBCA cricket academy, to comment on Bangladesh’s getting the test status. The question was critical in a single point of view for Australia was one of the countries who was against it once and gave a delayed support lastly. Philips’s remark let drop one thing very lucidly; Bangladesh will improve but it would take time, nothing spectacular would happen all on a sudden-so, the expectation ought to endure the vicissitudes of this greenhorn test playing nation. Well, that is okay with us; we are not expecting Bangladesh to defeat Zimbabwe; we are not still expecting they must have the ability to level up the series; finally we don’t wait for a drastic change in favor of Bangladesh that will turn over all calculations. But what we wanted from them is to play test cricketof course in a sensible way, with the least application of cricketing knowledge. In the second innings Aminul Islam’s wayward shot proved to be the prime cause of the debacle and Akram Khan only strengthen it baited by the leg-side flick. Naimur Rahman is currently struggling with his form, therefore, he fell a quick prey to the Zimbabwean seamers. At that stage much was expected from Mushfiqur Rahman who has a fair standing to select which ball should be spared and which should be punished according to the merit. But he failed in both innings trying to play ambitious shot in one of them at a period when it was expected that he stayed as long as possible. The tails could provide some handy assistance to Javed Omar if they could just hang on; instead they flaunted their ability to play power shots and eventually were cut off like some novice schoolboys. What Manjurul could do was not trying to lift the ball repeatedly; had he have some patience, Javed Omar might have reached the three-figure landmark.Yet, now-a-days, we see most of the decisive test matches do not run up to the fifth day; if we consider that Bangladesh did not exhibit that badand above all the records are still accompanying them alike the inaugural test. Javed Omar’s accomplishment is something we can boast about and obviously Manjurul’s bowling that had drawn the unleashing compliment of Carl Rackemann, the coach of Zimbabwe.
