Everton hit with double injury blow

Everton have been hit with a double injury blow ahead of the Merseyside Derby on Sunday afternoon.

What’s the word?

Frank Lampard has taken to his pre-match press conference (via Liverpool World) to deliver an update on two fresh injury issues at Finch Farm, with Donny van de Beek and Andre Gomes now both ruled out of the derby, alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Lampard told the press: “We’ve got a couple of small injuries. Donny van de Beek won’t be fit, he’s got a small injury, in his groin/ pelvic area. Andre Gomes the same. That keeps him out of the weekend.”

Lampard will be gutted

There is no doubt that the Toffees boss will be gutted to lose two players to injury at this stage of this season, especially considering the position they have found themselves in – battling against relegation from the Premier League.

With seven games to go, Everton are only above the relegation zone by one point following Burnley’s victory over Southampton on Thursday, and it will certainly cause a headache for Lampard to lose players at such a delicate time – with both midfielders’ injuries weakening his squad depth in midfield yet again.

Van de Beek had only just returned to fitness a little over a week ago after sustaining a thigh injury, but has not featured since the Wolves defeat in March – with the Man United loanee only making six appearances in total since he joined the club in January.

Meanwhile, Gomes has only played three times since Lampard joined the club, so, although he will be a miss in terms of depth on the bench, it shouldn’t make a huge impact on the starting side unless there are further injuries to the midfield.

Finally, Calvert-Lewin has only made 14 appearances this season and hasn’t scored a single goal since August last year.

Indeed, despite returning from a long term quad injury in January the star striker has failed to refind his goal-scoring form, and could now potentially be sidelined again until the end of the season.

With that being said, all three have made minimal impact on the side as of late so Lampard should have enough quality to continue to pick up points in the league, with the 43-year-old manager undoubtedly be hoping his side can get a much-needed result at Anfield.

Somerset put themselves in contention

Somerset moved back into contention for a first ever County Championship title with a nine-wicket victory over Lancashire at Taunton

09-Sep-2010
ScorecardSomerset moved back into contention for a first ever County Championship title with a nine-wicket victory over Lancashire at Taunton. The 23 points gained by the home side took them to within two of leaders Nottinghamshire and they will go to Durham for their final game next week in confident mood.Charl Willoughby took 3 for 37 and Alfonso Thomas 3 for 53 as Lancashire were bowled out for 170 in their second innings, Steven Croft top-scoring with 46. That left Somerset needing just 48 to win and they knocked off the required runs in 8.4 overs for the loss of skipper Marcus Trescothick. Nick Compton was unbeaten on 30 at the end.The day began with Somerset 350 for 8 in their first innings, leading by 91 runs. Ben Phillips fell quickly, but Murali Kartik, unbeaten on 38 overnight, moved to his second half-century of the season off 70 balls with eight fours and a six. Some lusty blows from last man Willoughby helped extend the lead to 123 before he was run out by Simon Kerrigan.Lancashire’s hopes of getting back into the game suffered a double blow with their second innings score on 22. Paul Horton was unhappy at being judged lbw to Phillips for two and Tom Smith was caught by Peter Trego at third slip driving at a Willoughby away-swinger.It was 32 for 3 when Mark Chilton was pinned leg before by a ball from Thomas that nipped back off the seam. Then Thomas claimed the key wicket of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, on 20, with a delivery that kept low and brought another lbw decision. At lunch the scoreboard read 62 for 4 and the total was extended to 109 before Croft’s battling innings ended when he was given out caught in the gully off bat and pad, having faced 101 balls and hit five fours. The batsman signalled his annoyance at the decision by kicking the ground and swishing his bat angrily several times on the way back to the pavilion. In the same Trego over Gareth Cross was also out to a bat-pad catch, this time the ball carrying through to wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter. Saj Mahmood also fell for a duck, lbw to Phillips with the total on 116, but Luke Procter (32) and Kyle Hogg (37 not out) ensured that Somerset would have to bat again with a stand of 41.Procter was caught behind cutting at Willoughby, having faced 108 balls, but Gary Keedy and Kerrigan both departed without scoring as Somerset, encouraged by the result at Trent Bridge, moved in for the kill. Lancashire took five points from the game and must now watch the outcome of a three-horse race for the title in the final round of matches as Nottinghamshire, Somerset and Yorkshire tussle for top spot.

Celtic backed to sign Christopher Scott

The lure of guaranteed playing time is expected to see Celtic win the race to sign Bayern Munich youngster Christopher Scott this summer, according to Alex McLeish.

The Lowdown: Celtic linked with move

The 19-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move to Parkhead in recent days, with Sky Germany reporting talks with the player’s representatives even though Bayern are keen on extending his stay beyond 2022 – when his current deal expires.

It is believed that Brentford are also interested in acquiring Scott’s services, as the potential battle to sign him in the summer hots up.

The youngster has won four caps for Germany’s Under-20 side and is valued at £1.08million by Transfermarkt.

The Latest: McCleish backs Hoops for signing

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish, a pundit for BBC Radio 5 Live, backed Scott, a ‘glorious talent’ to trade Bayern for Celtic, with the promise of more minutes giving them the edge over Brentford:

“That would be a cracker. I suspect he will only come if he is promised he will be playing. I’m not saying he’ll be in the nucleus of the team.

“But he will need to be assured he will be getting games. It’s rare to see young teenagers making a breakthrough but teenagers in their late teens have a chance.

“If you’ve got a glorious talent, there’s absolutely no stopping you. But it seems that a lot of them are thinking about, not bigger clubs but the bigger leagues, to get them over that kind of foundation hurdle.

“The aim is to catch the eye of the seniors at Bayern Munich or whatever. They clearly want to get the experience of a tougher league.”

The Verdict: One for the future

While Scott wouldn’t necessarily come in as a key man immediately, he is someone who would be viewed as a long-term signing with great potential.

That’s not to say he wouldn’t play regularly, though, as McLeish alludes to, and he has been described as ‘one of the biggest talents in Germany’ in the past, surely earning himself plenty of playing time when the Bhoys compete on multiple fronts.

Scott could add depth and quality to Celtic’s midfield, not to mention ensure that Ange Postecoglou’s side continues to build into the future, as key midfielders like Callum McGregor begin to age.

Singapore cricket "badly hurt" by ICC decision – Captain

Munish Arora, the Singapore captain, has said the outcome of the ICC enquiry into the incidents that marred the finish of the World Cricket League Division Five game between Nepal and USA in Kirtipur was a major setback to cricket in his country. The Singapore Cricket Association had claimed the crowd disturbance and the consequent revised target formulated by the technical committee had resulted in a back-door entry for Nepal into Division Four at Singapore’s expense. The inquiry, conducted by top ICC officials Dave Richardson, David Becker and Ravi Sawani, ruled against SCA’s claims earlier this month. “The damage has been done enough for cricket in Singapore,” Arora told Cricinfo. “The Singapore team is badly hurt by the decision. The way the team performed in Division Five, there was no doubt we could possibly advance further in ICC tournaments but the decision has really put our cricket back by a few years.”The match was disrupted in the closing stages by the unruly home crowd, with USA set for a facile win that would have brought Nepal below Singapore in the league standings. As it transpired, the 45-minute delay caused by the crowd disturbance meant the target was revised significantly enough to lift Nepal’s net run-rate above Singapore’s by a slender margin, giving the home side a fortuitous entry into Division Four. The ICC, in its enquiry report, made recommendations that the proposed mandatory safety standards being introduced by the ICC security task force considers including sanctions against the home board when the home crowd interrupts a match, particularly when it benefits the home team. The investigation covered all aspects of the controversy including the net run-rate calculations, the reactions of the match officials and the nature of the security-related issues which arose during the match. The Cricket Association of Nepal has already accepted a directive to not host further international cricket at the venue until remedial measures were carried out, including the reconstruction of the boundary wall that was damaged by stone-throwers looking for projectiles to hurl into the ground.

Downie: Newcastle eyeing other CBs

Keith Downie has revealed that Newcastle United are now eyeing other central defenders whose names have not yet been reported.

The Lowdown: Who’s been linked so far?

Following the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood at St. James’ Park, it looks as if the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium are now looking at bringing in a new centre-back as their third signing in the January transfer window.

The names that have been linked the most seem to be Sven Botman, Diego Carlos and Benoit Badiashile, but as the window ticks down it may be that the new owners now look at other targets to bring in, with crucial games against both Watford and Leeds United in the Premier League coming up.

The Latest: Alternatives eyed

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern, Sky Sports journalist Downie has revealed that the North East club are now eyeing alternative targets in the centre-half position, outside of the names already reported:

“I think they’re just juggling a few names at the moment.

“I mean, if I’m honest I was given two other names yesterday that I have not reported yet, because I’m trying to stand those up.”

The Verdict: Get one in now

Whoever the player is, the Tyneside outfit simply need to get a central defender in now.

They currently have the second-worst defensive record in the top flight, and so freshening up the backline would really help Eddie Howe and his team going forward.

Looking at their current options, Ciaran Clark is currently rated as the division’s worst centre-back (to have played at least five games) so far this season, while Federico Fernandez, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles all rank inside the worst eleven (WhoScored).

It is clearly an area that needs improving, and so a new centre-half must now be the priority for the Magpies.

Everton must land Isco transfer

Following the departure of Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands, it was claimed by Toffees journalist Greg O’Keefe that manager Rafael Benitez “will have greater influence” regarding future transfers as well as club owner Farhad Moshiri and his advisors.

One particular potential transfer swoop that Moshiri could consider which would certainly please Benitez and potentially many Everton fans too would be to swoop for Real Madrid midfielder Isco during the upcoming January transfer window.

With a recent report from Spain suggesting that the La Liga club would be willing to sell the midfielder next month, this could give Everton a great opportunity to secure his signature after being previously linked with him.

Since joining Carlo Ancelotti’s side back in 2013 from fellow Spanish club Malaga, Isco has gone on to make 343 appearances across all competitions, scoring 52 goals and providing 56 assists along the way and winning a plethora of trophies in the process.

So far this season, the 29-year-old has only made seven appearances in La Liga, which shows why the club are reportedly willing to let him leave in January.

During Benitez’s spell in charge of Real Madrid, Isco scored three goals and provided six assists 20 appearances under the current Everton boss, leaving only Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo having appeared more often during the 61-year-old’s brief reign at the Bernabeu in 2015.

This suggests that Benitez would presumably be very happy to reunite with Isco, who is currently picking up a wage of £211k-per-week according to Salary Sport, if he were to make the move to Everton next month.

Labelled previously as a “fantastic player with an incredible talent” by former Barcelona star Andres Iniesta, Moshiri could deliver Benitez’s dream transfer at Goodison Park in January by securing Isco’s signature in the coming weeks.

In addition, if the 29-year-old were guaranteed regular game-time in the Premier League, this could be very tempting for the player rather than being a sporadic option for Ancelotti in Madrid.

Looking ahead to January, Moshiri and Benitez should definitely explore the possibility of signing Isco in January to try bring him to Everton and see if he can inject a bit of life back into the squad.
