Frustrated Hales wants to shake T20 tag

Alex Hales has admitted his frustrations at the disjointed start to his season that has seen him bat in three positions for two counties while being unable to force his way into England’s one-day side

Alex Hales has admitted his frustrations at the disjointed start to his season that has seen him bat in three positions for two counties while being unable to force his way into England’s one-day side.Hales will have a day back in the spotlight on Tuesday when he faces Sri Lanka, the team he scored an unbeaten 116 against in the World T20 – England’s first hundred in the format – but believes it is unfair if he is already considered purely a T20 cricketer. He would have had a chance in the ODI side on the West Indies tour if he had not suffered a late injury. With England looking to form a side for the World Cup next year in Australia and New Zealand, Hales was a contender to shake up the top order for the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka but the selectors, including new coach Peter Moores, instead went for recalling Michael Carberry alongside the current opening pair of Alastair Cook and Ian Bell. There remain concerns about Hales’ technique for the longer one-day game, although his List A average of 33.26 alongside a strike-rate of 99 is far from poor, but England’s limited-overs squads were picked without any domestic white-ball form to assess at the start of the season. It appears Hales is still suffering for his dire 2013 first-class season, where he averaged just 13.94, and the belief from the England management is that opening in one-day cricket requires the skills to see off the moving ball. When asked if he thought it was too early for him to be ring-fenced as a T20 player, Hales said: “A little bit, yes, and I think it’s a little bit harsh. Up until last year, when I had a shocker with the red ball, I’d averaged 40 opening at Trent Bridge which is not a bad record at all.”I’m keen to learn from last year and move on, I think it’s too early to be pigeon-holed as a T20 player. I am working hard on other aspects of the game. I feel if they gave me a chance this summer I’d be ready for it. I’ve seen a lot of Sri Lanka and seen a bit of India and feel I’d be ready if the chance came along.”Players excused training after T20 Blast

England had their first training session ahead of the Sri Lanka T20 on Sunday although four squad members – Moeen Ali, Eoin Morgan, Chris Jordan and Jos Buttler – were excused due to their involvement in T20 Blast matches last night. Moeen and Buttler arrived into London somewhere around 3am after driving down from the Old Trafford.

It has not been the ideal start to the season for Hales as he looks for some stability in his cricket. He has already been out on loan to Worcestershire, having lost his place in Nottinghamshire’s Championship side after one game (where he scored a half-century), before being recalled by his home club and has batted in a variety of positions.”The stuff so far has all been red-ball cricket and it has been a little of everything for me – batting at No. 6, then off on loan to Worcester batting at No. 4, then opening last week. So I haven’t really had chance to knuckle down with the red-ball stuff. That’s been the story of the season so far, dealing with that frustration.”Hales, therefore, has one chance, in the short-term at least, at international level when he resumes battles with the Sri Lankans at The Oval less than two months after taking them for a breathtaking hundred in Chittagong. Then it will be back to the domestic game as he aims to push his claims for the World Cup place.”In England you do get some seam movement, so you do need some form of solid technique opening up, but with the World Cup being in Australia on pretty flat pitches if I score my runs for Nottinghamshire I think that will be pivotal when it comes to selection in the winter.”It remains to be seen who partners Hales at the top of the order in T20, following the axing of Michael Lumb. Carberry would be a like-for-like replacement in terms of power but Bell is also in the squad, although has not played a T20 since 2011. Moeen Ali could be another option depending on how England want to balance their side.

Ireland hold on for last-gasp win

Ireland prevailed over Zimbabwe in a tense win on St Patrick’s Day, after a middle-order stutter left them needing two off the last two balls

The Report by Firdose Moonda17-Mar-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsPaul Stirling struck four successive boundaries off Tinashe Panyangara’s first over•ICCSome say the phrase “The luck of the Irish” refers to the good fortune enjoyed by the citizens of that country when they took up mining, with much success, in the United States. Others say it was coined in irony, to reflect on the potato famine and wars that affected the country so badly. After their last-ball win against Zimbabwe on St Patrick’s Day, Ireland’s cricketers will be inclined to believe the former. They restricted their Full Member opposition to what was considered a below-par score on a ground hosting its first international match. In response, they seemed to be having their own St Patrick’s Day parade, coasting towards a win at 61 without loss after the Powerplay and 99 for 1 at the halfway stage. Then, they started to stutter.Tinashe Panyangara, who went for 18 runs in his first over, changed ends and delivered a double-wicket maiden in the 15th over to drag Zimbabwe back into the game. Brendan Taylor made the bowler change ends again for his third over and Kevin O’Brien took 15 runs off Panyangara before falling on his sword in the 18th over. Still, Ireland needed only seven runs off the last two overs. Zimbabwe needed a miracle.Tendai Chatara had bowled intelligently to that point with 17 off three overs and a wicket. He understood the conditions called for a change of pace. With a slew of slower balls, he gave away only three in the penultimate over. Ireland needed four off the last six.Panyangara stepped up for the final over. The hallmark of his game is death-bowling and he showed it with his third ball – a perfect yorker to dismiss Ed Joyce. The next ball was almost as good but Max Sorensen dug it out and set off for a risky single only to be run out by Sean Williams at mid-off.Ireland needed two runs. Zimbabwe still needed a miracle. The penultimate ball was a low full toss which Stuart Thompson outside-edged to third man. Ireland were one run away from a win, even as Zimbabwe thought they could pull off a miracle.Panyangara fired a yorker-length ball, Alex Cusack missed but ran anyway. Taylor was not standing up to the stumps but threw under-arm from his position. Had he hit, Cusack would have been run-out and the match would have gone into a Super Over. He missed and Ireland scrambled the bye for a win. After the match, a gutted Taylor had no explanation for his decision to not stand closer. “I backed myself to hit the stumps,” he said. “But anyway, these things happen. I think we were still 20 runs short.”It turned out Zimbabwe were only two runs short, but Taylor held the batsmen responsible for not capitalising on starts. He was the only one who did, top-scoring with 59. The rest were frustrated by Ireland’s spinners and the sluggish surface.Between them, Paul Stirling, George Dockrell and Andy McBrine gave away only 68 runs in 12 overs and took four wickets. They pegged Zimbabwe back from the outset – Stirling opened the innings with an over that cost just four and then McBrine and Dockrell punctured the Zimbabwe innings. Hamilton Masakadza was caught at short midwicket trying to clear McBrine. Taylor was caught at the extra-cover boundary off Dockrell, looking to break the shackles after Sibanda lost his wicket to the pull shot. After the Powerplay, Zimbabwe were well positioned at 56 for 1 and looked set for a total of 180-plus. But, at 131 for 5 after 17 overs, even 155 looked out of reach. Elton Chigumbura showed off his finishing skills, scoring 16 off the last over, including two sixes, but Taylor thought even 163 was not enough. The way Ireland openers William Porterfield and Stirling started seemed to rubber-stamp the Zimbabwe captain’s opinion. They raced to 61 without loss in the Powerplay, rendering Zimbabwe’s early attack ineffective. Even after they were both dismissed, Ireland marched on.It was only when Panyangara was brought back from a different end that Zimbabwe came alive again, inspired by his double strike. Prosper Utseya kept O’Brien and Joyce quiet, so did Sean Williams, and Zimbabwe built pressure.O’Brien was not going to be stopped for too long, though, and when he tore into Panyangara, it seemed Zimbabwe’s comeback was short-lived. The bowler, however, made up for his mistakes and delivered a final over that could have seen Zimbabwe win. But it was St Patrick’s Day and the Irish have that luck.

Huge win for UAE as Namibia collapse to 39

The UAE spinners delivered an extraordinary thumping to Namibia in their penultimate ICC World Cricket League Championship match in Sharjah and kept their chances alive for the qualification for the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand

The UAE spinners delivered an extraordinary thumping to Namibia in their penultimate ICC World Cricket League Championship match in Sharjah and kept their chances alive for the qualification for the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Namibia were bowled out for just 39 – a new record for the lowest total in the tournament – handing UAE a big boost to their net run-rate and with one more match remaining between the teams, UAE have a chance to overtake Netherlands in the table and rise to No. 2. Afghanistan, however, have two matches remaining and they are just a point behind UAE.Namibia’s rout was triggered by the Shadeep Silva, the left-arm spinner, who opened the bowling and picked up the wicket of opener Michau du Preez in his first over before adding another wicket in his second over. Namibia were left in misery at 20 for 4 by the time Silva struck for the third time, in the 11th over. The UAE captain, Khurram Khan, realising Namibia’s problems against left-arm spin, introduced Ahmed Raza and himself soon after and the Namibia batting succumbed to the trio and were bowled out in 24.4 overs. Khurram, who cleaned up the tail, had figures of 4.4-2-2-3.”We really wanted to win this match as it was so important for us as we try to qualify for the World Cup,” Silva said. “Now [Sunday’s] game against Namibia is just the same and we need to do well.”UAE, after being put into bat, were themselves in early trouble, losing their first three wickets with only 39 runs on the board, but Shaiman Anwar held one end and constructed useful partnerships to pull UAE out of trouble, but his dismissal just before UAE had reached the 100-mark put Namibia in control. A strong stand of 79 between Mohammad Shafiq and Rohan Mustafa lifted UAE out of the trouble and helped them towards 200, which in the end, turned out to be more than enough.”It was a wonderful partnership (the sixth-wicket stand) and it set up the match for us,” Khurram said. “I was thinking anything above 170 was going to be a good total and at one point it looked like it was going to be around 120, but they batted so well. In the end it was enough.”

Embalado!

Fulton, Williamson grind England

Under bright skies and on a true pitch, barely a ball deviated in the air or off the pitch all day as New Zealand reached 250 for the loss of just one wicket by stumps on day one in Auckland

The Report by George Dobell21-Mar-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsHamish Rutherford threw away his wicket after a promising beginning•Getty Images

Had Alastair Cook arrived at Auckland with a case of wine and box of chocolates for his New Zealand hosts he could hardly have been a more gracious guest. Cook, perhaps seduced by a hint of green and a theory that the drop-in pitch in use for this Test might aid his seamers, inserted New Zealand upon winning the toss and thereby surrendered first use of a fine surface.Under bright skies and on a true pitch, barely a ball deviated in the air or off the pitch all day as New Zealand reached 250 for the loss of just one wicket by stumps. With the series level at 0-0 going into this final match, New Zealand have earned an excellent opportunity to win a Test series at home against England for just the second time. The first was in 1983-84.Cook’s insertion may well draw comparison with Nasser Hussain’s infamous decision in Brisbane in 2002. To be fair to Cook, there is little reason to suppose this pitch will deteriorate. It is hard, easy paced and true. It offered precious little swing or seam movement and promises little better for spinners later in the game. The lush outfield and lack of other pitches limits the opportunity for reverse swing, too. If it was ever going to help the bowlers, it was going to be in the first hour. But his decision has allowed New Zealand to claim the initiative and, in the decisive Test of a series, leaves England in a precarious position. Even a drawn series would have been considered a setback at the start of the tour.Perhaps Cook’s decision was not so much at fault as England’s execution of the decision. Certainly they will reflect that they did not fully utilise the new ball. It is not that James Anderson or Stuart Broad bowled badly – far from it – just that they did not make the New Zealand openers play as often as they might in the first few overs. By the time they had found their line, the openers had settled and the ball offered nothing. The main beneficiary of England’s generosity was Peter Fulton. The 34-year-old New Zealand opener had previously only passed 50 twice in Test cricket and his previous highest score was 75, made almost exactly seven years ago. Here, however, at the age of at 34 years and 49 days, he benefited from the benign conditions and a small outfield to become the second oldest man to score his maiden Test century for New Zealand. The oldest is Zin Harris.Smart stats

It’s the first time New Zealand have stayed with the same XI over a series of three or more Tests.

The unbroken 171-run stand between Peter Fulton and Kane Williamson is currently New Zealand’s third-best for the second wicket against England.

This is only the seventh time a team has scored more than 200 for 1 in their first innings after being put in to bat by England.

Fulton’s unbeaten 124 is his maiden Test hundred, in his 20th Test innings. His previous-best was 75, against West Indies, in his third Test innings.

This is only the ninth time that two New Zealand openers have scored centuries in a Test series, but the third such instance for them against England.

Kane Williamson’s unbeaten 83 is his fifth 50-plus score in 14 Test innings at home; in home Tests he averages 47.63, compared to an away average of 28.51 in 27 innings.

Whatever his fragility on the off side – and several times he was drawn into playing at deliveries he should have left and on 12 was fortunate to see an indeterminate prod off Anderson fly past third slip – Fulton is a beast off his legs. He scored 98 of his 124 first-day runs on the leg side and at one stage plundered Monty Panesar for 14 – a six and two fours – in three balls, all over midwicket.Perhaps, on a larger playing surface, he might have been caught on 30 when he top-edged a pull off Broad and saw the ball clear the fine leg boundary, just 53 metres from the bat, but generally he blocked on off stump and waited for England’s bowlers to stray either too full or on to his legs. He on drove sweetly – the stroke that took him to 50 was delightful – and showed a willingness to hit over the top, clubbing Panesar for two sixes over midwicket.Kane Williamson was, in many ways, even more impressive. More secure in defending his off stump than his partner, he also unveiled some delightful strokes with a couple of straight drives off Anderson bearing the hallmark of true class. Quick to pick-up the length, he cut and pulled Panesar for boundaries and, at the age of just 22, resumes on day two just 17 short of a fourth Test century. He has already helped Fulton add 171 for the second wicket, with his preference for the off side complementing his partner’s leg-side skill.Initially it was Hamish Rutherford who impressed. He scored 37 of an opening partnership of 79, easing New Zealand’s early nerves with a pleasing straight drive for four off Anderson and lofting Panesar for two straight sixes in the spinner’s second over. His wicket, in the penultimate over before lunch, owed more to a lapse of concentration than any incisive bowling. Slashing at a wide one without foot movement, he was well taken at first slip and left the pitch knowing he had squandered an ideal opportunity of a big score.England were underwhelming in the field. While Broad and Anderson persevered in conditions offering them little, Finn, lacking rhythm from his new run-up, failed to generate the pace that might have been expected of him, while Monty Panesar, with no help from the conditions, was ineffectual. While the flat pitch should offer few fears to England’s batsmen, it is tough to see how England can claim the 19 wickets they need to win this series.

Barnard hundred leads England rally

Ed Barnard made an unbeaten century to lead England out of trouble on the first day in Cape Town

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Jan-2013
ScorecardEd Barnard made an unbeaten century to lead England Under out of trouble on the first day in Cape Town. Batting got easier as the day went on and Barnard relished the better conditions to put England in a fair position at the close.Barnard, a 17-year-old from Shropshire, struck 11 fours in a composed innings of 168 balls. His innings was vital because the top order had been blown away by the new ball after South Africa won the toss and chose to field.Coming in at 89 for 5, Bernard shared stands of 63 with Callum Jackson and 60 with Oli Stone to prevent his side from falling well behind in the Test match. Kishen Velani had earlier made 49 as England finally got some runs on the board but he was the third of four wickets for opening bowler Lizaad Williams just after lunch.Williams had put South Africa in firm command in the morning session, reducing England to 14 for 3 in the fifth over. Jonathan Tattersall went caught behind for 2 and Harry Finch was trapped lbw for 9, both after Dominic Sibley fell to Craig Kirsten for a second ball duck. Kirsten later left the field with a stress fracture of the lower back, an injury that could rule him out for two months.Williams went on to bowl Jackson for 49 as England’s recovery was trimmed, but with the second new ball not as threatening and Barnard in good touch, England ended the day in positive shape, adding 109 after tea.
