Leeward Islands to debut in Regional Women's Tournament

All six territorial boards of the West Indies Cricket Board will find representation for the first time in the upcoming Regional Women’s Tournament, which begins on Thursday

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Jul-2016All six territorial boards of the West Indies Cricket Board will find representation for the first time in the upcoming Regional Women’s Tournament, comprising the limited-overs format, starting Thursday. Leewards Islands will field a team for the first time in the tournament, while Windward Islands will play as a single unit, also for the first time.Windwards earlier had each of its four nations – Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenada – playing as individual teams when the regional tournament was an eight-team competition. That changed in 2015 when Windwards fielded only two outfits – North and South.”We want to welcome Leewards Women into the fold and are looking forward to them playing a valuable role in the expansion of the women’s game in the region,” Josina Luke, WICB project officer for women’s cricket, said. “We have spent the last year working with the Leewards in the development of this squad, following a decision by our directors to have them involved this year, so this is another step towards strengthening the base of the women’s game in the region and expanding our talent pool.”The banding together of the talents of the Windwards Women helps us to streamline our tournaments and bring greater competitiveness to the overall women’s game, as the ultimate aim is to create a stronger West Indies Women’s team with a view to winning more global titles.”Leewards will be captained by Shawnisha Hector, the Antiguan pacer, while Afy Fletcher, the West Indies Women’s legspinner, will lead Windwards. The tournament, this year, will comprise the Super50 as well as Twenty20 competitions. “We want to broaden the pool of players for the West Indies Women’s team, bearing in mind two important things,” Luke said. “First, we are well-placed for automatic qualification for the ICC Women’s World Cup next year in England and want to remain on that trajectory with important series in the ICC Women’s Championship later this year against England at home and India on the road. Also, we want to fortify our squad in the T20 format, so we can continue to put forward the kind of performances that enhance our position as World champions.”The tournament will begin with the Super50 competition. Barbados, the defending champions, will face Trinidad & Tobago. Leewards will take on five-time champions Jamaica, while hosts Guyana kickstart their campaign against Windwards. Each of the teams will meet the others once in the round-robin stage, which will consist of five matches of 50-overs-a-side. The teams with the maximum points will clash in the final, on July 17.The T20 tournament will take place four days later with three games on each match day, all of them at the Guyana National Stadium, before a final round of play-off matches to determine positions on July 25.SquadsBarbados: Shaquana Quintyne (captain), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shamilia Connell, Deandra Dottin, Keila Elliott, Allison Gordon, Reshelle Griffith, Malissa Howard, Kycia Knight, Hayley Matthews, Shakera Selman, Charlene Taitt, , Shanna Thompson, Tiffany ThorpeGuyana Tremayne Smartt (captain), Shemaine Campbelle, Shabika Gajnabi, Erva Giddings, Melanie Henry, Mandy Mangru, Plaffiana Millington, Subrina Munroe, Kaysia Shultz, Heema Singh, Latoya Smith, Akaze Thompson, Lashuna Toussaint, Kavita YadramJamaica Stafanie Taylor (captain), Alecia Bookal, Shanel Daley, Keneshia Ferron, Chinelle Henry, Corrine, Howell, Natasha McLean, Jodian Morgan, Chedean Nation, Roshana Outar, Tameka Sanford, Jerona Walcott, Vanessa Watts, Rashada WilliamsLeeward Islands Shawnisha Hector (captain), Jasmine Clarke, Melicia Clarke, Davanna Claxton, Kimberly Dookhan, Amanda Edwards, Sherma Jackson, Rozel Liburd, Terez Parker, Grace Persaud, Kerisha Powell, Jenisen Richards, Eldora Sylvester, Saneldo WillettTrinidad & Tobago Merissa Aguilleira (captain), Kirbyina Alexander, Reniece Boyce, Britney Cooper, Rosalie Dolabaille, Stacy Ann King, Lee Ann Kirby, Shenelle Lord, Anisa Mohammed, Selene O’Neil, Kamara Ragoobar, Karishma Ramharack, Amanda Samaroo, Rachael VincentWindward Islands Afy Fletcher (captain), Stacy Ann Adams, Holly Charles, Roylyn Cooper, Nerissa Crafton, Krisani Irish, Qiana Joseph, Juliana Nero, Akeira Peters, Rosilia Registe, Yasmine St. Ange, Glendeen Turtin, Rackel Williams, Swayline Williams

'Kohli's energy rubs off on others' – Harbhajan

Virat Kohli had stressed on the importance of winning matches, and before leaving for the Bangladesh tour, Harbhajan Singh and Ajinkya Rahane weighed in on Kohli’s captaincy during the team’s open media session

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Jun-2015Virat Kohli had stressed on the importance of winning matches, and before leaving for the Bangladesh tour, Harbhajan Singh and Ajinkya Rahane both weighed in on Kohli’s captaincy during the team’s open media session.Describing Kohli as a “match-winner” Harbhajan said that Kohli’s aggression would rub off on other players.”Virat is a match-winner, someone who is very competitive. No matter what the situation is, he always wants to win which is a great quality as a player. Having him as a captain helps the team a lot when he is looking for win,” Harbhajan said.”Having a captain who has so much of energy, his energy level rubs on to the others which is a very positive sign. The way the Indian team played in Australia was brilliant. Though we didn’t win the Test match but that intent was there and that’s what Virat Kohli brings to the table. As he himself said in an interview, he doesn’t mind losing one or two games while looking to win. That’s where his quality comes in.”Harbhajan, who was recalled for the solitary Test against Bangladesh on the back of 16 wickets in Mumbai Indians’ title-winning IPL campaign, also said that he would stick to his role of supporting bowlers with the goal still being to win games for India.”My role would be the same what it was five years back – to win games for India and help my other bowlers who are playing. We need to work as a unit and it is not about me there are other bowlers and we all would look to back each other. That is what I have been doing while I was playing with Anil Kumble, Amit Mishra and other bowlers.”Rahane, one of India’s success stories in England and Australia, also credited Kohli’s captaincy and hoped that India would carry their aggressive attitude to Bangladesh.”Virat is really aggressive on the field, doesn’t matter whether the opponents are Australia, England or Bangladesh,” Rahane said. “He gives confidence to each and every individual and we really respect him as a captain.”During the Australia series we played aggressively and wanted to win each and every match and we will carry this attitude. We are an experienced side and we know the conditions well so from here on we will be doing well.”However, Rahane said that the youngsters had also picked up a lot from Dhoni.”Playing under Dhoni, we youngsters learnt a lot, he gave us massive confidence be it Tests, ODIs or T20s. He actually taught us how to believe in ourselves and how to react to each and every situation. Everyone has learnt a lot under Dhoni and he is still the captain in ODIs.”

Javed Khan plays despite father's death

Javed Khan took two England XI wickets the day after his father had died during open-heart surgery

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Nov-2012For most of the Mumbai A players, the first-class game against England XI is an opportunity to push for Ranji Trophy selection. For 22-year-old medium-pacer Javed Khan, however, it was more than that as he took the field on the first day. Javed’s father, Mohammad Jayish Khan, had died the night before while undergoing an open-heart surgery.Javed, who played two Ranji Trophy games for Mumbai in 2010-11 but has been ignored by the selectors since then, skipped his father’s burial and decided to turn up for the game at the Dr DY Patil Stadium on Saturday. He had a fruitful day, dismissing Jonathan Trott and the centurion Jonny Bairstow. He was not required to bowl on Sunday morning.”By 5 am, we advised him to play the match. He was crying the whole night and was in a state of shock,” Javed’s coach Raju Pathak told . “But this match against England was a big opportunity for him. His father was keen to see him bowl against England. So he did what his father would have wanted him to do.”Most of his teammates in the dressing room did not know that Javed had lost his father. And those who knew didn’t want to talk about it because they thought it would affect Javed. It was very brave of him to come out and play today.”

Blues stumble in chase for 224

New South Wales’ bowlers shrugged off the loss of Doug Bollinger to restrict Queensland’s lead, but the visiting batsmen stumbled to 3 for 28 at stumps in pursuit of 224 for victory

ScorecardNew South Wales’ bowlers shrugged off the loss of Doug Bollinger to restrict Queensland’s lead, but the visiting batsmen stumbled to 3 for 28 at stumps in pursuit of 224 for victory in the Sheffield Shield match in Brisbane. The in-form Ben Cutting struck twice and Luke Feldman once in the closing overs of the day, leaving much for the New South Wales middle order to do if outright points are to taken from the table-topping Bulls.Queensland had battled to build a substantial lead for most of the day, as the visitors claimed regular wickets on a surface that still provided some assistance on day three.Their lead might have had less to defend without an aggressive 72 from the captain, James Hopes. As Bollinger rested an injured ankle, the NSW captain Steve O’Keefe winkled out four batsmen with his thrifty slow left-arm, while Moises Henriques found enough movement to claim three.

Bravo and Pollard set to play in Big Bash

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Nov-2010West Indies allrounders Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard are set to participate in the Big Bash, Australia’s domestic Twenty20 tournament, this summer after receiving No-Objection Certificates from the West Indies Cricket Board to represent Victoria and South Australia respectively. However, the two, along with Chris Gayle, who has been signed up by Western Australia, risk ruling themselves out of selection for the West Indies team in the Twenty20 format should they choose to go to Australia. The Big Bash clashes with the Caribbean T20 and, according to the WICB’s regulations, participation in regional competitions is mandatory for being considered for national selection in the corresponding format of the game. The WICB had initially expressed reluctance about issuing the NOCs.Bravo, Gayle and Pollard have opted out of the WICB’s central contracts but have reaffirmed their commitment to West Indies cricket. The three players are eligible for selection into the West Indies squad for the 2011 World Cup after having played in the WICB Cup, the regional one-day tournament, earlier this year. Pollard and Bravo played for Trinidad and Tobago, and Gayle captained Jamaica. The Big Bash runs from December 30 to February 5, while the Caribbean T20 takes place between January 9 and 24.

John Dyson enters race to be New Zealand coach

John Dyson, the former Sri Lanka and West Indies coach, has expressed interest in the New Zealand post recently vacated by Andy Moles

Alex Brown30-Oct-2009John Dyson, the former Sri Lanka and West Indies coach, has expressed interest in the New Zealand post recently vacated by Andy Moles. New Zealand Cricket have encountered difficulty filling the head coaching role of late – Moles’ appointment last November came after Matthew Mott, Graham Ford and Mickey Arthur turned down the position – and the availability of a well-credentialled candidate will be viewed as a positive by Kiwi officials. Before the industrial turmoil that engulfed West Indies cricket this year, Dyson led the side to three wins, seven draws and five defeats in the Test arena – a vast improvement on their record of six draws and 14 defeats in the 20 matches immediately prior to his arrival. His tenure was highlighted by West Indies’ Wisden Trophy series victory over England this year and a shock away defeat of South Africa in his first match as coach. The nadir was undoubtedly the home Test series defeat to Bangladesh, during which a severely depleted West Indian side slumped to a 2-0 loss. Dyson was sacked shortly after.Previously, Dyson piloted Sri Lanka to second and fourth in the Test and ODI rankings, only to be replaced by Tom Moody when a new administration took charge. Moody, Stephen Fleming and Greg Shipperd are among those to have withdrawn their candidacy for the vacant New Zealand post – all three have IPL commitments – leaving Dyson among the few contenders with recent international coaching experience.”If the opportunity arose and they considered me a suitable candidate, I’d definitely be interested,” Dyson told Cricinfo. “They have a couple of genuinely world-class players in Daniel Vettori, Ross Taylor and Brendon McCullum, and then guys like Jesse Ryder who really could be right up there as well. They certainly have the potential to be a very competitive team.”Australians and New Zealanders have a healthy sporting rivalry, but when you get right down to it, they communicate well. I feel the experience I have gained at Sri Lanka and the West Indies would hold me in good stead, but we will just have to wait and see if anything comes of it.”John Wright and Steve Rixon have both been touted as contenders for the New Zealand coaching post, although neither is guaranteed the position. Wright, the former India coach and current NZC high performance manager, has previously expressed reservations about returning to touring life, while Rixon has not held down an international post since he left the New Zealand job a decade ago.Wright this week received the strong endorsement of Martin Snedden, the former NZC chief executive, however the incumbent CEO, Justin Vaughan, was somewhat less effusive when assessing Wright’s claims to the job. “We all want to get the best of John Wright, we all want to get the best out of the Black Caps and we want the best equipped to do that and I’m not sure if all those three lines intersect,” Vaughan told the .Dyson, meanwhile, confirmed he would not pursue legal action against the West Indies board over his surprise sacking in August. “It’s done with,” he said. “It is disappointing that no official has yet had the courtesy to explain why I was terminated, but I am not going to push it any further. It was certainly disappointing that just a couple of months after we were being hailed as heroes for beating England – which I told them at the time was dangerous – they decided to replace me as coach.”

Chahar replaces Avesh in India's Asia Cup squad

Avesh is yet to fully recover from the bout of fever he had before India’s Super 4 game against Pakistan

Shashank Kishore06-Sep-2022 • Updated on 08-Sep-2022Deepak Chahar has replaced Avesh Khan in India’s Asia Cup squad as the latter is yet to fully recover from the illness he was diagnosed with last week.*Avesh is currently under the supervision of BCCI’s medical staff in Dubai, where the team is based, and has been advised rest. He was ruled out of India’s Super 4 match against Pakistan on Sunday after complaining of a fever, but India coach Rahul Dravid had expected him to be available for the later games in the tournament.Meanwhile, Chahar has been a regular at India’s net sessions over the past 12 days in Dubai. On Tuesday, he went through an extended bowling session beside the main square before the start of India’s game against Sri Lanka. His session was keenly monitored by bowling coach Paras Mhambrey.Chahar himself is slowly returning to competitive cricket following a long rehabilitation for a quadricep injury, which he had suffered in February. During rehab, he ended up injuring his back and had to miss the IPL, where he was one of Chennai Super Kings’ costliest buys. He returned to cricket after a gap of six months for the ODI tour of Zimbabwe last month. Chahar played two of the three games there, where he picked up five wickets, including 3 for 27 in his comeback game.Avesh featured in both of India’s group-stage games in the Asia Cup but proved expensive. He conceded 72 runs across six overs in the two games he played, including 1 for 53 in the 40-run win against Hong Kong. Avesh has so far featured in 13 T20Is in which he has picked up 15 wickets at an economy of 9.10.

Covid-19: India A tour of England postponed, India Test team to travel with larger squad instead

Tour games between English first-class teams and New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan also scrapped

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Apr-2021India A’s tour of England this summer, which would’ve seen them play against both India and England Lions, has been postponed. Instead, the BCCI will send an inflated squad to “prepare for, and use during” India’s five-Test series against England. The change is keeping in mind the prevailing Covid-19 situation, with the ECB saying the focus is on “delivering the safest possible environment for all international cricket matches scheduled to take place over the summer”.”India’s warm-up schedule will now comprise two intra-squad four-day matches, which will replace the two previously planned four-day fixtures between India Men and India A in July,” the ECB said in a press statement, adding that the decision to tweak the schedule was jointly agreed on between the two boards in question. The changes are not limited to the Indian team’s tour. “Following further discussions with the boards of New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan it has been agreed to cancel their scheduled men’s tour matches against first-class counties,” the statement said. “New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan’s men’s teams will instead play intra-squad matches to allow them suitable preparation for their international fixtures this summer.”On rescheduling the India A tour, Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, said, “We look forward to welcoming a men’s India A tour at a later date after this summer and when restrictions have eased. It will provide a valuable opportunity for players from both countries to experience high-quality cricket and to showcase the talent within our England Lions team and first-class counties.”The senior India side is scheduled to leave for England shortly after the completion of the ongoing edition of the IPL and, after playing the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in Southampton, take part in a series of five Tests, with the first slotted for Trent Bridge from August 4.
