Dorrans desperate to impress

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Graham Dorrans is determined to make his mark on the Premier League next season.

The 23-year-old Scotland international netted 18 goals to help the Baggies return to the top-flight at the first time of asking, having made little impression two seasons ago in the Premier League.

He told the Express & star:"I feel I can still develop. There were some games last season when I came off the pitch disappointed because I still felt I could give more.

"I enjoyed the season, but I still feel I've got more to come. You can always still improve and you never stop learning."

"I am confident in my own ability that I can hold my own in the Premier League.

"I came down here when the club were in the Premier League and I was confident that I would work my way in.

What would Fergie and Wenger make of their player’s actions?

If you think the England team has major problems, then just look what’s been going on in the French camp this summer.

The French national side look to be out of total control and in utter disarray, after several bust-ups involving staff and players has effectively ended their World Cup campaign in South Africa.

All the drama kicked off prior to the start of the World Cup when Raymond Domenech left a number of French stars including the likes of Samir Nasri, Patrick Vieira and Karim Benzema at home. Domenech omissions of these stars have left not only the French population scratching their heads, but as well as other fans around the world (including myself)

The manager has not been a popular figure amongst the players, the French press and many of the country’s fans for his tactics and team selection in the World Cup. The players body language suggest that there is a lot of friction and disharmony amongst the group, and at half-time against Mexico last week, Nicolas Anelka let rip on Domenech. The Chelsea striker is reported to have told the disillusioned manager ‘Go f*** yourself, you son of a w****’, this inevitably saw the French striker being sent home by the French Football Federation, and as such, the player will not feature in the national side any time soon.

Following Anelka’s exclusion, the French squad have since refused to train and have revolted against the FFF’s decision on sending the striker packing. The walk-out came just moments after an intense dispute between France fitness coach Robert Duverne and captain Patrice Evra boiled over, with the left-back claiming that the Anelka story had been leaked by some form of ‘traitor’.

Taking this all into consideration (and it is a lot) what would the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger make of their French stars actions in South Africa this summer?

Evra appears to be the ringleader of this ‘French circus’ following his actions and recent statements released to the media. However, with this being said, would Fergie actually care what his left-back does whilst wearing the Blue of France? It’s debatable, and this would probably be the same for Wenger with Abou Diaby, William Gallas, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna. Nevertheless, the two Premier League managers would like to see their players play football and more importantly to act in a professional manner whilst on international duty. Wenger and Fergie may be surprised to hear and see what has transpired in the French camp, although, they may have seen it coming from the start.

Many fans around the world will agree that the French players are certainly not acting in a professional manner, especially by revolting against any sort of authority, it’s just wrong to do as a footballer, period. Even if the manager is disliked and or not respected highly, it’s still the player’s job to play the game, and as such, perform well…if not for themselves then for their fans back at home and those who travelled to South Africa.

I would think that Fergie and Wenger would be slightly concerned with their player’s actions, but not overly. They would not stand for such behaviour at their clubs that’s for sure. If it were to ensue at club level at any time, then both Fergie and Wenger would unquestionably deal with the problem quickly and sufficiently. Both managers would not like to see their players in the papers for the wrong reasons, due to the fact that it may draw bad and unnecessary publicity towards their clubs. However, I would argue that whilst the players in question are not wearing their club colours, then it won’t be too much of an issue for Fergie and Wenger to worry about, but that’s just my opinion of course.

The Top 5 Worst Tackles Of All Time?

After seeing some crunching tackles in the World Cup final between Spain and Holland,  particularly from the Dutch, and to more specific from captain Mark van Bommel and Nigel De Jong. It got me thinking about some of the worst tackles that we’ve seen over the years so here are a compilation of the top 5 worst tackles ever:

1. Harald Schumacher on Patrick Battiston

In the semi-final of the 1982 World Cup between West Germany and France, Michel Platini fed a through ball is substitute Battiston, rather than attempt to catch the ball or block the shot, German ‘keeper Schumacher decided he would clothesline the player. As a result of the challenge Battiston was knocked unconscious, lost his two front teeth and had damaged his vertebra. Platini said that he thought he had died, because “he had no pulse and looked pale”. To top it all France weren’t even awarded a penalty and ended up losing the game on penalties

[youtube tGq7VcaHoqo]

2. Roy Keane on Alf-Inge Haland

After Roy Keane injured his cruciate ligament attempting to tackle Haland, the Norweigian lay over Keane and accused him of feigning injury to escape a punishment. Keane clearly wasn’ happy with these comments and four years later, after Haland had transferred to Man City he exacted his revenge with an awful tackle in the Manchester Derby.

[youtube p_st29mlQwU]

3. Paul Gascoigne on Gary Charles

In the 1991 FA Cup final between Tottenham and Nottingham Forest, Gascoigne went in for a horrific tackle on Charles which ended up having severe repercussions on himself. The challenge ended up rupturing the cruciate ligaments in Gazza’s right knee. Many people believe that had he not suffered that injury, then he would have gone on to become a much better player than he already was. To make matters worse Stuart Pearce scored from the resulting free kick that he had given away, although Tottenham did eventually win the game after extra time.

4. Benjamin Massing on Claudio Caniggia

How do you stop a dazzling Argentinian forward getting past your defence? Why you just take him out with a a late tackle. At least that was Cameroon defender Benjamin Massing’s idea when he took out Claudio Caniggia at the 1990 World Cup. Still despite his dismissal Massing’s team were able to hold on to a 1-0 lead and record one of the greatest World Cup shocks of all time.

5. Francesco Totti on Mario Balotelli

Roma icon Francesco Totti decides to take a similar leaf out of Benjamin Massing’s book here to Mario Balotelli from waltzing past his defence. Except Totti’s ‘challenge’ was a lot more blatant and as the team’s captain he should know a lot better than to do that.

Randy Lerner unhappy with City’s Milner conduct

Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner has accused Manchester City of breaking rules over their continuing pursuit of midfielder James Milner.

The England international scored in Saturday's season-opening 3-0 victory over West Ham at Villa Park.

Milner has been linked with a £30million move to big-spending City throughout the summer after they made an initial bid for his services before the World Cup.

Villa have successfully held off City's interest in the 24-year-old midfielder, but Lerner is unhappy with the conduct of their Premier League rivals.

Twelve months ago Villa lost fellow midfielder Gareth Barry to City in similar circumstances.

"Big, bad Manchester City came along and asked for Milner and we said, 'No, he is not for sale'," Lerner told the Mail on Sunday.

"Under the rules you have to respect that. Manchester City respected that for two whole days. And then they violated the rules and came in for him again.

"We are not a selling club. A selling club is when you let it be known that you want to sell a player, through an agent or whatever.

"That didn't happen with Gareth Barry and it didn't happen with James Milner either. As for Ashley Young, he was never going."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

FIVE things we learnt from Chelsea this weekend

While it wasn’t the ‘Playstation’ football that Carlo Ancelotti had been referring to recently, Chelsea produced a solid display on Saturday to dispatch a spirited Stoke side. Here are some things we learnt in the aftermath of Chelsea’s 2-0 victory against the Potters:

1. Chelsea fans are now seeing the best of Florent Malouda.

Malouda has taken time to adjust to the pace and physicality of the Premier League but now that he has done so, the Frenchman has become one of the most feared players in the league. The former Lyon winger has put his World Cup nightmare with Les Bleus behind him and has been in scintillating form for Chelsea this season.

Malouda has thrived in his role on the left in Chelsea’s attacking trio. This has given Malouda more of a free licence to roam the pitch and move into space, as he knows that there will be width created on the left by Ashley Cole’s attacking endeavours down the flank. And it was this freedom of movement which allowed Malouda to grab Chelsea’s first goal.

John Terry intercepted an errant Stoke pass and took the ball out from the back. He spotted Malouda’s clever run across the Stoke backline and slipped the Frenchman in with a delightfully weighted ball. Malouda latched onto Terry’s ball and coolly finished past an onrushing Thomas Sorensen.

2. Ashley Cole is arguably Chelsea’s greatest attacking threat.

Carrying on from Malouda is Ashley Cole who brings a huge attacking threat down Chelsea’s left. On many occasions on Saturday, Cole found himself the furthest player forward and his tireless ability to get up and down the flank provided Chelsea with a much-needed outlet against a stubborn Stoke defence.

Like Malouda, Cole’s movement is most impressive. He wasn’t content just giving the ball. He was intent on giving the ball and then moving on into space and giving Chelsea another attacking option. This was best seen when Cole played a ball into Drogba and carried on his run into the Stoke box. His run wasn’t tracked by a Stoke defender and Drogba chipped a ball into Cole. Cole then attempted a first time volley which cannoned unluckily off the bar.

With most of the defensive attention focused on the likes of Lampard, Malouda, Anelka and Drogba, Cole has the ability to be Chelsea’s most devastating weapon with his ability to ghost in seemingly unnoticed and influence the outcome of games.

3. Chelsea’s defence is looking formidable.

After our pre-season jitters, our defence is looking a whole lot more settled now that the Premier League has gotten underway. Terry and Alex were superb against the physical threat of Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones and then Ricardo Fuller who came on for Jones in the second half.  Admittedly, Chelsea will face sterner tests than West Brom, Wigan and Stoke but three clean sheets out of three will stand us in good stead for any future challenges, starting with West Ham in two weeks time.

4. Lampard is no longer ‘untouchable’.

Frank Lampard may have been an ‘untouchable’ player for Jose Mourinho but under Ancelotti, he is no longer. Lampard didn’t have his best game in Chelsea’s midfield on Saturday and was replaced by Salomon Kalou in the 72nd minute. He managed to miss his third penalty in a row when his tame spot-kick was saved by Thomas Sorensen in the Stoke City goal. While there may have been some mitigating circumstances for Frank’s lacklustre performance (he has been suffering from a groin hernia which will need surgery), it shows that Ancelotti is not afraid of taking off some of the so-called ‘big-name’ players if they aren’t performing up to scratch.

5. Chelsea are still able to grind out results against stubborn opposition.

To be frank, Chelsea didn’t play all that well against Stoke on Saturday but were still able win convincingly. Stoke understandably came to Stamford Bridge with a defensive agenda and this caused Chelsea to struggle for options in the final third with Stoke crowding the space with 10 men behind the ball. Despite this, we were still able to create a number of opportunities and if it wasn’t for some profligate finishing, it could have been three or four-nil.

This ability of ours to get a result against stubborn opposition was a trademark of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side and Ancelotti has kept that tradition going while instilling a greater attacking emphasis on Chelsea’s play.

Luka Modric escapes serious injury

Tottenham have been handed a major injury boost after learning that Luka Modric will be fit enough to take part in the midweek Champions League game at Werder Bremen.

There had been fears that the Croatia international would be joining Jermain Defoe and Michael Dawson in the White Hart Lane treatment room but X-rays have shown that the injury he sustained to his left leg against West Brom on Saturday was not serious.

The 25-year-old had left The Hawthorns on crutches after suffering an injury in a challenge with defender Gonzalo Jara during the 1-1 draw.

"Luka Modric will travel with the squad for our opening Champions League group match at Werder Bremen on Tuesday after X-rays of his left fibula came back clear," read a club statement.

"The Croatia international midfielder was forced off with the injury in the first half of Saturday's draw at West Brom and will continue to be monitored prior to being made available for selection on Tuesday."

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp had been pessimistic after the game when he said of Modric:"He is going for a scan but he broke the bone in his leg last year against Birmingham and he got a kick on the same spot today.

"He is in a lot of pain and it doesn't look great. We will wait and see what the scan says but it certainly doesn't look very good.

"We don't know yet if the leg is broken again. If he has got another break, you are talking months again.

"I am just hoping it is good news for a change. Defoe has had the ankle operation and he is out for 12 weeks and Dawson is another one."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Time for ‘arrogant’ Chelsea starlet to make us believe his own hype

Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge has been called many things but ‘shy and retiring’ isn’t one of them. Sturridge is a player who is supremely confident in his own ability; some might say this confidence is bordering on arrogance and it is easy to see why.

Despite only starting 6 Premier League games, Sturridge secured a £60,000 a week contract with Chelsea after failing to agree a new deal with Manchester City. With such a large contract at such a young age, Strurridge could be mistaken for a player who has proven himself as the highest level but this is far from the case. It’s time for the youngster to show the Chelsea faithful that he is worthy of such a lucrative deal by putting in the performances on the pitch.

From a very young age, Strurridge has been tipped for greatness and it seems that he has bought into his own hype.

As a youngster growing up, he was almost destined for a career at the highest level in football.

He comes from a footballing family- his uncles Dean and Simon Sturridge both had successful careers as professional footballers while father Michael just failed to make the grade at Birmingham City.

He hopped from one youth academy to another, looking for the perfect place to showcase his talents and he ended up in Manchester, signing for Manchester City. His talents were clear for all to see and he was training with the first-team at the tender age of 16. He made his debut for City in 2007 and went on to feature 32 times and score 6 goals in his time at Eastlands.

Coming from a football family, Sturridge was no doubt made aware of the brevity of a career in football and he has been keen to maximise his earning potential. There were rumours that his decision to leave Aston Villa’s youth academy for Coventry and Coventry’s for Manchester City’s were motivated by money. The accusations of greed levelled at Sturridge are given further weight by the fact that he reportedly demanded £65,000 a week from Manchester City or else he wouldn’t sign a new contract. City were unwilling to meet his demands and he moved to Chelsea and signed a £12 million 4 year deal at Stamford Bridge.

At Chelsea, it would be easy for Sturridge to slip into complacency and convince himself he had made it. There were whisperings from within the club that this was indeed the case as he was reluctant to take advice and failed to apply himself properly in training.

While this may have been the case, you wouldn’t have known it looking at Sturridge’s goalscoring record from when he has started. In his 8 starts for Chelsea, Sturridge has scored 6 times. He put in an impressive performance in the midweek Champions League game against MSK Zilina where he started the game and scored an excellent goal. However, Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has demanded more from Sturridge:

“He’s a Chelsea player with good quality. He could do better. I expected more of him on Wednesday and he knows this.”

“He has fantastic ability, and I’d like to see these skills and ability more in a game. He scored with fantastic movement, but we need to see more of that.”

There’s no doubt that Sturridge is a player with a huge amount of potential and he has shown maturity by concentrating on improving his game which he seems initially reluctant to do. If he does continue to do so, there is every chance that Sturridge can make everyone a believer of his talents.

VIDEO: Top FIVE Manchester derbies

Tonight Manchester City host bitter rivals Manchester United in what should be a hostile and highly charged Premier League encounter. Manchester United sit three points above their ‘noisy neighbours’ in the table and will be looking for a win to put pressure on Chelsea. For Manchester City, its an opportunity for revenge after last seasons heartbreaking last minute defeats. As well as this, City can’t afford to drop six points behind Manchester United and lose further ground on Chelsea.

We have put together 5 iconic Manchester derbies to remind you of some classic games, before watching the big game this evening. The Manchester derby is never without surprise, and these five games examine the history and the drama that the Manchester derby has offered fans over the years.

Manchester United 0 – 1 Manchester City, April 27, 1974

Dennis Law scored 237 goals for Manchester United but arguably his most famous was his goal for Manchester City that effectively relegated Manchester United. In truth, his goal was irrelevant as Manchester United were already doomed – but this is the way it has gone down in footballing folklaw. The Scot was so distraught he had to be substituted – his back heel goal was his last touch in football. United fans invaded the pitch in a vein attempt to get the match abandoned. It wasn’t, and United were relegated.

[youtube aXpF2v0Kgvk]

Manchester City 5 – 1 Manchester United, September 23, 1989

Dubbed the ‘Maine Road Massacre,’ Manchester City humiliated Manchester United with stylish attacking football. Manchester United fans will argue that in the 80’s they looked a shadow of the team that dominated the 90’s and Ferguson was still modeling him team. However, that day City were superb and goals from David Oldfield 2, Trevor Morley, Ian Bishop and Andy Hinchcliffe gave Manchester City their superb win.

Continue to PAGE TWO for 3 more cracking Manchester derbies…

Manchester City 2 – 3 Manchester United, November 7, 1993

Manchester United had just been eliminated from the Champions League after surrendering a two goal lead against Galatasaray. Manchester City raced into a two goal lead and it seemed that United had lost all fight. However, up step Eric Cantona. Manchester City allowed United back into the game after a terrible defensive header, pounced on by Eric Cantona to get United back into the game. A second from Cantona and a last minute Roy Keane strike gave United a famous win.

Manchester City 4 – 1 Manchester United, March 14, 2004

The first derby at the City of Manchester Stadium and it couldn’t have been sweeter for City. It would be fair to say that City fans never warmed to Robbie Fowler but they forgave his taunting after his performance in the derby. Along with Trevor Sinclair, Jon Macken and Shaun Wright Phillips, Fowler gave one of his best performances for City. Although the scoreline was flattering – but did City fans care?

Manchester United 4 – 3 Manchester City, September 21, 2009

The game had an edge as it was Carlos Tevez’s return to Old Trafford, there had been bitter slurs of ‘noisy neighbors’ and the ‘Welcome to Manchester’ poster had riled both Ferguson and United fans alike. One of the most pulsating Manchester derbies in recent years. On show, two quality teams, playing attractive football – a game that should go down as the best Manchester derbies ever. Wayne Rooney gave United the lead, before a mistake by Ben Foster gifted Gareth Barry an equaliser. Fletcher made it 2-1 before Craig Bellamy’s superb equaliser. A second from Fletcher had looked to have given United all three points, but Rio Ferdinand’s mistake gifted Bellamy an equaliser – and it looked like United had thrown away two points on three separate occasions. However, six minutes into the four added minutes allocated, Michael Owen pounced to give United the win, sparking wild celebrations from Sir Alex Ferguson as he danced down the touchline.

Do West Ham really need the burden?

Ever since they took control of West Ham in January 2010, David Gold and David Sullivan have been on mission to acquire the 2012 Olympic Stadium as a new home for the Hammers. With the news coming out this week that even relegation will not thwart the David’s in their mission to see the east London outfit move home, and that Boris Johnson has approved Tottenham’s plans to redevelop White Hart Lane, it seems as if it is inevitable that West Ham will be moving into the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Games. But don’t West Ham have more pressing matters to deal with at the moment? Namely that they are currently sitting bottom of the table and are 5 points off safety.

People have quite rightly asserted that, even if West Ham do get relegated this season, it isn’t the end of the world because by the time it comes to actually occupying the stadium, they may well be back up in the Premier League. However, I can’t help feeling that in their earnestness to secure the Olympic Stadium, Gold and Sullivan are putting current, footballing, issues on the backburner. The notion of maintaining Avram Grant as manager, almost regardless of results and performances is absurd, and seems to tie in with their plans for the Olympic Stadium.

The Olympic Park Legacy Company are expected to make a decision on the ‘anchor tenants’ by the end of the year and it is seemingly very likely that it will be West Ham. But as the David’s prepare for West Ham’s future life in Stratford, it has been turmoil behind the scenes at Upton Park this week with Zeljko Petrovic leaving his post as assistant manager and Wally Downes being appointed as a defensive coach. At the most basic, footballing level, problems are being ignored, and having  described relegation last season as being ‘Armageddon’ for the club, this season the duo don’t seem particularly bothered by the prospect.

Securing West Ham’s long-term financial future is one thing, but this must also tie-in with a short-term plan on the pitch as well, and the West Ham board don’t seem to have any contingency plans for when things go wrong. By the time West Ham are or aren’t announced as the new tenants of the Olympic Stadium, the club may well be in an untenable position in the Premier League, and in securing the Olympic Stadium they may well have also secured their passage to a stint in the second tier of English football.
