Celtic Make Approach For "Elegant" 21 y/o

Celtic have made an approach over a potential move to sign FC Volendam centre-back Xavier Mbuyamba, according to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph.

What’s the latest Celtic transfer news?

The Hoops and Brendan Rodgers appear to be on the search for a new centre-back despite already signing Maik Nawrocki from Legia Warszawa at a cost of €5m. He’s one of six new players through the Celtic Pak door this summer, with Odin Thiago Holm, Hyun-jun Yang, Marco Tilio, Hyeok-kyu Kwon and Tomoki Iwata also making the move to Parkhead.

However, with all the incomings, there have been outgoings. Jota made the move to Saudi Arabia in a deal worth £25m earlier in the window, while Conor Hazard left for Championship side Plymouth Argyle on a permanent basis.

Carl Starfelt could be the next to leave Glasgow, with Rodgers saying prior to the opening-day win against Ross County that the club could soon lose the Sweden international.

"Carl is in a position where he may be leaving the club.

"He has been fantastic and really respectful, but he is in a position where we may lose him. This is a chance for Maik (Nawrocki) to build a partnership with Cam (Carter-Vickers)."

One player who has been linked as a potential replacement is another Sweden international in IF Elfsborg defender Gustaf Lagerbielke. Reports have claimed that an offer from Celtic which is close to £3m has been submitted for the defender in what would be a record sale for Elfsborg, but it doesn’t look as if Lagerbielke is the only option.

Sky Sports' Joseph took to X on Tuesday to share a Celtic transfer update, he said that alongside Lagerbielke, an enquiry has also been made for Mbuyamba.

“Celtic have made enquiries for two centre-backs as they look to replace Carl Starfelt. It’s understood enquiries have been made for Elfsborg’s Gustaf Lagerbielke and Volendam’s Xavier Mbuyamba.

“Reports in Sweden suggest Celtic are further down the line with Lagerbielke.”

Who is Xavier Mbuyamba?

Mbuyamba is just 21 years of age and can also turn out as a right-back alongside his favoured centre-back role. He has already spent time on the books of both Barcelona and Chelsea during his career but left Stamford Bridge in 2022 for Dutch side Volendam.

Labelled as a “complete, elegant and dominant” defender by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Mbuyamba has gone on to play regular senior football for Volendam in the Eredivisie, turning out on 30 occasions in all competitions last season.

Mbuyamba managed an impressive five goals during the previous campaign and appears to be at the top of his game after his Transfermarkt valuation increased to a career-high €2m following his return to the Netherlands.

He could well be a player that improves even further over time, however, Mbuyamba is under contract until 2025, with Volendam having the option of extending that by a further year.

Therefore, Celtic may have to pay what Volendam are after if they are to have any chance of landing the centre-back, but it could still be one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks.

Must-win for sinking Sri Lanka against soaring Pakistan

Sri Lanka have lost nine ODIs in a row. Pakistan have won eight of their last nine. Is there any way for Sri Lanka to keep the series alive?

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando17-Oct-2017

AFP

Big PictureIt didn’t seem so long ago that Pakistan were considered a modest ODI outfit playing an outdated form of the game. Their batting was too slow, their bowlers not penetrative enough, and their fielding conformed to stereotype. Now, suddenly, having beaten the world, they have begun to play like world-beaters. It is the newer players that have injected this fresh energy: the likes of Babar Azam, Hasan Ali, Shadab Khan and Fakhar Zaman who have shaken things up. On Monday, Babar and Shadab, 23 and 19-years-old respectively, heaved their side to a win in a match they should have comfortably lost. The opposing camp can only look on with envy. There, despite the many changes over the last year, there have been no signs of reinvigoration. The nine-match losing streak is their worst in 30 years, their bowlers rarely take wickets, and even when they do – as on Monday – the batsmen fail to score the runs. What’s worse is that so many players who began their careers with promise have begun to flounder in this format. Dinesh Chandimal was once an outstanding limited-overs prospect, now he can barely hold a place in the XI. Milinda Siriwardana and Thisara Perera too – dazzling talents once, but inconsistent performers of late.Having won eight of their last nine ODIs now, Pakistan have begun to acquire an aura of indomitability. Having reduced them to 101 for 6 and still failed, Sri Lanka must be wondering what they have to do to win a match. That, in the middle of a series, SLC is trying to convince individual players to agree to play the third T20 is Lahore, is perhaps also drawing focus from the series at hand.Whatever the case, Pakistan now have the chance to lock down this series. Sri Lanka must reach for a special performance to break their abysmal streak.Form guideSri Lanka LLLLL(completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan WWWWWIn the spotlightIt’s time to talk about Kusal Mendis. It has been 12 international knocks now since he last reached fifty. In ODIs alone, he has not made 40 in his ten most-recent completed innings. There is no pattern to his dismissals, which suggests his slump is largely a matter of confidence. But having for so long been Sri Lanka’s beacon while team-mates regularly collapsed around him, Mendis desperately needs runs in the series to stave off contenders for his position. Asela Gunaratne, Kusal Perera, Angelo Mathews and Danushka Gunathilaka all await a return to the XI, after all.Thirty-three ODIs in, Babar Azam has seven ODI tons and six fifties. He is faster out of the gate than the likes of Virat Kohli – the challenge for Azam now is to maintain that intensity. Among his strengths is that Azam seems to have an innate understanding how to pace a big ODI innings – when to see a tough bowler out, and when to hit out. These are qualities that batsman often do not develop until they are experienced. With three more potential innings against what has been a poor Sri Lanka attack this year, Azam will aim to swell what is already an impressive average of 57.20.Team newsPakistan are likely to field the same XI, giving Ahmed Shehzad another run despite scores of 0 and 8 so far.Pakistan (probable): 1 Ahmed Shehzad, 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Babar Azam, 4 Mohammad Hafeez, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Sarfraz Ahmed (capt & wk), 7 Imad Wasim, 8 Shadab Khan, 9 Rumman Raees, 10 Hasan Ali, 11 Junaid KhanFollowing scores of 0 and 3, Milinda Siriwardana’s place in the XI may be under the microscope. The team management may persevere with Siriwardana, but if they drop him, Chamara Kapugedara is likeliest to enter the XI.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Niroshan Dickwella, (wk), 2 Upul Tharanga (capt), 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Lahiru Thirimanne, 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Milinda Siriwardana, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Akila Dananjaya, 9 Jeffrey Vandersay, 10 Suranga Lakmal, 11 Lahiru GamagePitch and conditionsYet another hot, humid outing awaits the players in Abu Dhabi. The stadium is not typically a high-scoring venue, with 300 having been breached on only three occasions.Stats and trivia Babar Azam is the fastest batsman to seven ODI centuries, doing it eight innings quicker than the next-best batsman Pakistan have won both previous bilateral series against Sri Lanka in the UAE. They beat Sri Lanka 4-1 in 2011, and 3-2 in 2013 Niroshan Dickwella needs 87 more runs to complete 1000 in ODIs. If he does it in the next innings – his 26th – he will be the fastest Sri Lanka batsman to the milestone, beating Roy Dias, who got there in 27Quotes”The batters need to get their act together. The skill is there, but they need to get their act together.”

Liverpool Eye Shock Swoop For £109m ‘Alien’

In news that comes as a major surprise to Premier League fans, Liverpool are reportedly in talks to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe on loan this summer.

Have Liverpool put a bid in for Kylian Mbappe?

Well, it certainly seems unlikely that Jurgen Klopp's side could secure the services of one of the world's most sensational footballers in Mbappe this summer, but that has not stopped the Mirror from revealing that the club are in talks with PSG.

The France captain is entering the final year of his contract with the Ligue 1 champions and offers no hope of renewing his current deal, prompting the affluent outfit to seek options after banishing the star from their first-team plans.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is said to be particularly incensed after the 24-year-old's obstinate rejection of Saudi Arabian interest, after Al-Hilal lodged a jaw-dropping world-record £259m offer, which would allow Mbappe to move to Real Madrid in one year's time.

Could Liverpool really sign Kylian Mbappe?

Justifiably, the news filtering in of Liverpool's desire to add Mbappe to the ranks has been met with an incredulous response from the club's fanbase.

Liverpool's emphasis this summer is on bolstering the midfield and adding to the defence; Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have both arrived to contribute to the former – with negotiations to sign holding midfielder Romeo Lavia ongoing – while there is an indication that the Anfield side will accelerate plans to sign a new centre-back.

But the tantalising thought of securing the 2018 World Cup winner's signature, albeit for one season, is seemingly too hard to resist for Klopp and co and if the Mirror's report is to be believed Liverpool are identifying the feasibility of a short-term transfer at the very least.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe.

The wage demands would be astronomical; the 70-cap France star – with 40 goals – earns a salary of £1.95m-per-week in Paris, and is valued at £109m by Football Transfers.

But the "incredible" striker – as he has been praised by France boss Didier Deschamps – would bring a level of striking superiority matched by scant few on English shores, having scored 212 goals and supplied 98 assists from 260 matches for PSG.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 2% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 4% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for progressive passes, the top 1% for progressive carries and the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90 – The list goes on, and Liverpool's attack would rival any in world football with Mbappe's addition.

Just imagine the chaos that Mohamed Salah could inflict upon opposition defences with a world-class "alien" – as Piotr Zielinski once pronounced, in awe, of Mbappe's performance, alongside him.

Liverpool fell by the wayside last term and failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in seven years – a factor that could prove another stumbling block in the Reds' pursuit of the one-time Monaco prodigy – but Salah still managed to produce a scintillating individual campaign that yielded 30 goals and 16 assists across 51 outings from his right-forward deployment.

Mo Salah

The dynamic partnership that could arise from Mbappe and Salah's feats on alternating wings, with a creative and selfless focal point such as Cody Gakpo orchestrating the play from the middle, could result in a destructive formula to catapult Liverpool back into title contention.

In a season that is so paramount to the next phase in the club's future as one of Europe's elite, it's no wonder that sporting director Jorg Schmadtke might be assessing the chance of landing Mbappe, even if it is only for one year.

Alas, the likelihood of a move to Merseyside taking place is small, infinitesimal even, but if Klopp did manage to get his hands on one of the greatest offensive prospects football has ever seen, it could spearhead a resurgence that would not only put Liverpool back to the forefront, but eclipse the previous illustrious success under their German manager's wing.

Goldbridge Unhappy As Man United "Waste Of Optimism" Player Returns

Mark Goldbridge has reacted to news that Anthony Martial is now back on the grass at Carrington following his latest injury setback at Manchester United.

What's the latest on Manchester United forward Anthony Martial?

According to The Evening Standard, Martial has been spotted in training pictures at Manchester United's Carrington training complex despite failing to feature in a single pre-season friendly for the Red Devils.

The report adds that the France international could feature in some capacity against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday at Old Trafford as new signing Rasmus Hojlund has been ruled out for a 'few weeks' with a back concern.

Last campaign, Martial struggled to maintain regular fitness for Manchester United, amassing 29 appearances across all competitions and notching nine goals and three assists in total, as per Transfermarkt.

Speculation surrounding the future of the former Sevilla loanee has emerged over the course of the transfer window. According to Caught Offside, Martial has been shortlisted by David Moyes at West Ham United, with the Scot looking to replace Gianluca Scamacca at the London Stadium between now and the close of play.

Writing in his exclusive column on Substack, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Manchester United could be willing to let Martial seek a new challenge, stating: "At the moment, Anthony Martial is staying at Manchester United but I’d consider him in the same range of players as Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire – if he gets an important proposal, he could leave. “Otherwise, he’ll stay and be part of Erik Ten Hag’s rotation squad. That’s the feeling around Martial now.”

Martial has just one year left on his contract at Manchester United and believed to earn a whopping £250,000 per week on the books of the Premier League giants, as per Capology.

Furthering the notion that Martial could be set to leave Manchester United, transfer insider Dean Jones told GIVEMESPORT that any departure could be complex despite the Red Devils' willingness to ship the Frenchman out of the club due to his injury record.

Jones said: “This could have been a big summer for Martial but a lack of game time again means he can not be relied on. United are definitely open to the idea of Martial leaving but it has to be a situation that suits everybody and that’s the tricky part to this. Obviously Martial’s injury record is not ideal so even future clubs have to be wary of that and it will impact in terms of any future deals he could get."

What has Mark Goldbridge said about Anthony Martial?

Goldbridge has been reacting to news that Martial has returned to training at Carrington on The United Stand YouTube channel; however, he isn't convinced that the Massy-born forward will be able to stay consistently fit in 2023/24.

The pundit stated: "I cannot invest any hope, excitement or anticipation or belief in Anthony Martial. I can't, not because I don't like the player, because it's a waste of optimism. He would have to stay fit until New Year for me to start believing in Anthony Martial.

"If he is fit and he keeps playing games, great. I'm not going to start getting excited about it because I'm just going to expect every week that he's going to break down injured again. That's where I am with Martial. It can only be a bonus, but it's not a bonus I believe in, so lets wait and see."

For now, at least, it looks like Martial will need to convince not just Goldbridge, but the entire Manchester United support, that he can be relied upon as an available attacking option this term after years of false dawns at Old Trafford.

Wolves: Lopetegui Eyeing Up Bargain Swoop For Relegated Striker

An update has emerged on Wolverhampton Wanderers and their plans to bolster their attacking options ahead of the 2023/24 campaign…

What's the latest Wolves transfer news?

According to Football Insider, Wolves are one of a number of sides eyeing up a swoop to sign Southampton centre-forward Che Adams during the summer transfer window.

Julen Lopetegui is looking to improve his forward line and has seemingly identified the former Birmingham number nine as a player who could provide the team with an added spark at the top end of the pitch.

However, the report claims that fellow Premier League teams Everton and Bournemouth are also interested in the Saints star, who has one year left to run on his current contract at St. Mary's.

Football Insider do not reveal how much it would take to secure the £52k-per-week gem's services this summer but do state that the Championship outfit are willing to sell him if a respectable offer comes in.

How many goals has Che Adams scored for Southampton?

The Scotland international has scored 31 goals in 145 appearances for the Saints in all competitions and could improve Lopetegui's attack this season, as well as being able to make current winger Pedro Neto better.

Adams has scored 21 goals across the last three Premier League campaigns combined, which works out as seven goals per term on average, and was one described as a "ketchup bottle phenomenon" by former manager Ralph Hasenhuttl due to his knack for scoring a number of goals in quick succession.

Meanwhile, no Wolves striker managed more than three top-flight strikes during the 2022/23 season and no player in any position produced more than six.

This suggests that the 27-year-old marksman has the quality to be Lopetegui's outstanding scoring option through the middle of the park if he is able to carry on that form at the Molineux, or even improve upon it.

Southampton striker Che Adams.

His success in front of goal could depend on the service that is provided to him and that is where Neto can play a key role as the Portuguese wizard has been let down by his teammates in recent years.

The former Lazio prospect has created 9.95 xA in the last three Premier League seasons for Wolves and only been rewarded with seven assists, which suggests that his fellow attackers are not making the most of the opportunities that he has been able to create for them.

Neto, who created 2.5 chances per game at the U21 European Championship this summer, could benefit from Adams' arrival as it would provide him with a centre-forward who has the ability to finish on at least a semi-regular basis, whereas the club's current strikers have rarely been able to find the back of the net.

The 23-year-old dynamo has also previously showcased his ability as a scorer, with eight goals in his first two top-flight seasons combined before one in the last two.

Adams could make the left-footed whiz better by being a focal point for the exciting youngster to play off in the final third. The Southampton is able to offer a creative presence as he has racked up 5.58 xA over the last two years and at least three assists in each of the last three campaigns.

Meanwhile, Joao Moutinho (two) was the only Wolves player with more than one assist last term, which suggests that the Scottish ace could provide the club with a boost due to his ability as both a scorer and a creator.

Therefore, the signing of Adams could allow Neto to thrive and get better as it would provide the talented gem with a striker who can both finish off the chances he creates whilst also helping him to add to his own goal tally.

O duelo

Matt Coles joins County Champions Essex

Matt Coles has swapped Kent for County Champions Essex on a two-year deal.Coles, something of an unfulfilled talent, admitted he had a “heavy heart” about leaving Kent but felt the opportunity to play Division One cricket and “push myself to be as good as I can be” made this too good an opportunity to miss. For Essex, his addition adds competition for places and depth in all formats.A former Lions allrounder, Coles emerged through the Kent youth system and academy. He made his first-team debut in 2009 and has represented the club more than 200 times across formats. He had a year remaining on his Kent contract. He did briefly leave Kent once before. At the end of 2013 he joined Hampshire on loan and subsequently signed with them. But despite a decent 2014 season, he struggled to settle away from home and returned to Kent.”It is with a heavy heart that I leave Kent,” Coles said. “It’s been my home and family for most of my life and career.”But I have a great opportunity to move and play Division One cricket with the County Champions. It feels right, and I want to push myself to be as good as I can be. Essex’s vision for the future is really exciting and I’m looking forward to playing a significant part.”Coles has flirted with notoriety for much of his career – he and Ben Stokes were sent home from a Lions tour in early 2013 after one too many nights out, while he was left out of Kent’s Championship fixture against Derbyshire in June 2016 following a drink-related incident and was suspended by the ECB for two further Championship matches after being found guilty of throwing the ball in a dangerous manner during their victory against Glamorgan in May. However, he is a well-respected player who performed well enough to earn selection for the first series of North-South matches at the start of the year.Aged 27 and with his chances of England recognition having receded sharply over recent years, the move might be considered a defining moment in his career.”It is important that we continue to improve the squad and not rest on our laurels,” Essex Head Coach Chris Silverwood said. “We feel Matt offers excellent attributes with both his batting and bowling across all formats. He will strengthen competition in red-ball cricket but also offer destructive batting and bowling in white-ball cricket so it is an excellent signing for the club.”The news leaves Kent’s seam-bowling resources looking a little thin ahead of the 2018 season. It is understood the club are among several keen to tempt Morne Morkel into a Kolpak deal and are also making enquiries about several other county seamers who either out of contract or out of favour at their current counties.
