No need for India to have fixed batting positions – Kapil Dev

India’s first World Cup-winning captain believes that match situations should dictate who bats at No.4 for the team

Sruthi Ravindranath03-Apr-2019While there have been umpteen suggestions on who should take up India’s No. 4 batting spot at the World Cup, former captain Kapil Dev does not believe the concept of slots applies in modern-day cricket. At the end of nearly every IPL match, a number of names – including the likes of Vijay Shankar, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu and Sanju Samson – have been suggested by former players for the much-discussed spot, the only one that India are seemingly still unsure about. While India have tested a few names at the position with varied degree of success in the recent past, players like Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer have also admitted that they would fit the bill. So, has Kapil put the debate to rest?

One should not get confused. Play like you want to win the match and don’t go by the numberKAPIL DEV

“There’s a lot of talk going on about No. 4, but you have to see the situation at that moment,” Kapil said, at an event hosted by Britannia that reunited him with Kris Srikkanth, Syed Kirmani and Roger Binny, members of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad.”I don’t think anybody these days have numbers [fixed positions in the line-up] – need of the hour is more important. You can send MS Dhoni, or anybody. No. 1 to 7 are all good enough to play there. One should not get confused. Play like you want to win the match and don’t go by the number. It should depend on the situation of the match.”Though he has been backed by various pundits, Rishabh Pant might not be a certainty to make the XI, but Srikkanth expected the wicketkeeper-batsman to make the cut, pointing to his match-winning abilities.Rishabh Pant and MS Dhoni congratulate each other•AFP”Rishabh Pant almost won a Test match from a no-win situation in England [The Oval Test, 2018],” Srikkanth pointed out. “You need to give him confidence. In my days, Kapil gave me that freedom. Like that Rishabh Pant should be given the freedom to play; he’s capable of winning at least three matches single-handedly.”Kapil, however, felt upcoming wicketkeeper-batsmen have a lot more to prove that they are dependable, especially considering that Dhoni has set high standards playing that role.”Dhoni has set the standard so high. They [other wicketkeeper-batsmen] have the ability and talent. Only the execution over a period of time is needed and it won’t happen overnight,” Kapil said. “Yes, they’ve done a couple of good performances but the standard is really high in today’s team. They have a long way to go.”While speaking of the importance of allrounders in the Indian team, Kapil also said that Dhoni was on top of his list.”Is a batsman-bowler the only allrounder? You can now say even a wicketkeeper is an allrounder. The meaning of allrounder is changed. It’s not just about a batsman who makes runs and takes wickets,” he argued. “Wicketkeeper should also be on this list. That way, Dhoni comes in very high. If you’re good in two departments – any two departments – everyone will come under that if you include fielding.”Former wicketkeeper Kirmani was also of the same view. “In our era, nobody considered a wicketkeeper an allrounder. Dhoni came and proved it. A wicketkeeper has to be an allrounder and since the advent of ODIs, there was more emphasis on a batsman and a wicketkeeper. Now a wicketkeeper is also an allrounder.”On being asked what the difference was between the 1983 World Cup squad and the current Indian squad, Kapil quipped: “They don’t have us, that’s the difference.”

Liam Dawson's last-ball four helps Peshawar Zalmi clinch thriller

Captain Sammy too plays his part with a 29-ball 40 in a crucial 89-run partnership

Peter Della Penna01-Mar-2019

PCB/PSL

How the game played out
Liam Dawson’s crunching straight drive for four off the final ball from Mohammad Sami ended a thrilling contest in Dubai; Peshawar Zalmi chased down 176 to beat Islamabad United by four wickets. With four needed of the final delivery, Dawson’s boundary allowed him to complete a 35-ball half-century after Darren Sammy, who played an equally key role, was run out off the penultimate delivery, trying to steal a bye.Dawson and Sammy rescued Zalmi with an 89-run sixth-wicket stand after they were struggling at 84 for 5 in the 12th over of the chase. The pair dragged it down to 14 off the final over and took four off the first three balls, including Dawson’s survival of a missed run out chance taking a bye off the third ball. Then, Sammy swatted a full toss for six to drag the equation down to four off two balls before Dawson sealed the victory. It meant Cameron Delport’s first innings 71 was in vain for United. PSL’s leading wicket-taker Hasan Ali was once again a major factor, having Delport caught by Dawson on the extra cover boundary in the 17th over of the United innings. It sparked a sharp slide in which United last their last seven wickets for 29 runs across the last 23 balls.Turning points
United experienced a major stumble at the end of the first innings. Even after Delport’s dismissal, they were in reasonable shape for a late burst. But from 171 for 5 with seven balls to go, United lost all five of their remaining wickets for just five runs. Three of those were run outs on attempts to steal byes as Hasan Ali and Wahab Riaz once again showed their outstanding yorker skills at the death. Zalmi were under pressure in the chase at 86 for 5 after 12 overs before Faheem Ashraf conceded 27 off the 13th over with Dawson on strike. A pivotal no ball was called for a full toss over waist height during the sequence that Dawson flicked over fine leg for six before hoicking the free hit for six more over midwicket. Suddenly the required run rate was down to 9.14. Ashraf committed another colossal blunder in the 19th. With 21 off 10 balls needed, he sent down a thigh high full toss that Sammy miscued to Shadab Khan at mid-off, but replays revealed Ashraf overstepped to give Sammy a reprieve. On 30 off 23 balls at the time, Sammy struck a pivotal six with three balls left, setting up the thrilling finish by Dawson.Star of the day
It looked like Sammy was going to be the hero with a typically powerful flourish at the finish but Dawson trumped his captain, and United, by seeing Zalmi over the line with his fourth career T20 fifty in 147 matches. The big miss
Aside from the no ball by Ashraf, Sammy was spilled on the extra cover boundary on 18 by sub fielder Amad Butt on the last ball of the 17th bowled by Ashraf. United also had a golden chance to runout Dawson on the third ball of the final over for 48, but Sami’s shy from point blank range at the non-striker’s stumps missed.Where the teams stand
Zalmi succeeded in breaking the three-way deadlock on eight points and now sit alone in first with 10 points, two more than United and Quetta Gladiators.

A BICADA DO CARCARÁ

Report drops "shock" Liverpool transfer update regarding Fabio Carvalho

Liverpool have made a surprising decision over an "unbelievable" Reds player who Jurgen Klopp admires, with a January update emerging over the weekend.

Liverpool held by Man Utd

While much focus has been on the Reds' potential incoming business during the January transfer window, there are also players who could move on to pastures new in 2024. Both Joel Matip and Thiago are out of contract at the end of the season and are 32 years of age.

Mohamed Salah's Liverpool future is also set to become a big talking point once again, with rumours of a huge bid from Saudi Pro League Al-Ittihad emerging over the weekend. With the 31-year-old's current deal running until 2025, he will surely either leave or sign a new deal next year.

luis-diaz-mohamed-salah-liverpool-opinion

There are also players who could head out on loan, with young right-back Conor Bradley wanted by a host of English clubs on a temporary basis, and a significant update has emerged regarding a player already at another club this season.

The Reds were held by Manchester United on Sunday afternoon in a frustrating encounter that saw them rack up over 30 shots and hold nearly 70 per cent of the possession, so their latest decision on a player who could add a bit of creative spark in those sorts of games is a surprising one.

Fabio Carvalho transfer update

According to a fresh transfer update from The Mirror, FSG are planning talks to recall Fabio Carvalho in the winter market, but not to unleash him into Klopp's team. Indeed, Liverpool youngster Carvalho could make a "shock" return to former club Fulham next month instead.

"Fabio Carvalho is open to a shock return to Fulham – if Liverpool are able to recall him from his loan spell at RB Leipzig. The Reds have opened formal dialogue with the Bundesliga club as they're currently unhappy with Carvalho's lack of minutes in Germany so far this season.

Sources close to the player have allegedly confirmed there is interest from both Fulham and the player's side in making a deal happen.

Liverpool's success rate with signings has been so high under Klopp, with an endless number of players proving to be outstanding acquisitions – Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson stand out as arguably the best of this era – but Carvalho increasingly feels as though he could be a rare failure.

The 21-year-old couldn't make a proper impact in his first season at Anfield, barring a memorable late winner at home to Newcastle United in the Premier League, and the fact that Klopp was willing to loan him out says a lot about his squad status.

The attacking midfielder's time on loan at RB Leipzig has been similarly underwhelming to date, with Carvalho only making one start in the Bundesliga this season, and it could be best for him to end his spell there early and go back to Fulham – even though many may like to see what he could produce in front of the rebranded Reds midfield.

“Charismatic” Liverpool target is now open to leaving his club in January

This could be a big boost for the Reds.

ByHenry Jackson Dec 17, 2023

Given his age, all hope is not lost for Carvalho with the Reds, and Klopp has described him as "unbelievable" in the past, but big improvements are needed if he is to make the grade at Anfield, or a permanent exit could end up happening in the relatively near future.

Arsenal can forget Toney by signing £52m-rated "monster" who’s outscored Saka

Therefore, the boss will look to add a new attacker to his side in an attempt to bolster the Gunners' output in front of goal.

Arsenal transfers latest – Victor Boniface

According to the Mirror, reports in Spain have stated that Arsenal have found their Ivan Toney alternative in Victor Boniface, who has been labelled as a “physical monster” by Sport.de.

Victor Boniface

The Nigerian is rumoured to be worth £52m – as per CIES Football Observatory – which may make the deal unlikely this winter.

Furthermore, Bayer Leverkusen will want to keep the striker as they look to beat Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title, although Arsenal's own title ambitions may well see a bid being lodged.

Boniface’s style of play

Arteta’s biggest problem this season has been finding a way to get his centre forwards to score goals. Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus have both failed to impress, scoring five and three, respectively, in the league, and therefore links to strikers have been flying around.

Toney has been linked to the Gunners continuously over the last year, but Boniface could prove to be a cheaper and arguably better alternative.

With that in mind, let’s address Boniface’s statistics from the last year across the top European leagues.

Firstly, they are both incredible goal-scorers who know how to find the back of the net with ease. However, the Leverkusen star's output this season has been beyond insane. The 23-year-old has netted 16 goals and registered eight assists in just 23 matches, completely outscoring Arsenal star Bukayo Saka who has scored nine overall this season. The Nigerian’s movement is elite, and he has the pace to cause havoc in behind defences.

Boniface is a striker who can literally do anything on the pitch. His tall 6 foot 3 frame allows him to play as a target man striker, as shown by his ability to receive progressive passes, linking up play to devastating effect. However, the ex-Royale Union Saint-Gilloise forward is also incredible with the ball at his feet, gliding past defenders with his speed and explosiveness, which is not usual for someone of his stature.

Xabi Alonso’s main man is a handful in every game state and can thrive no matter the opponent’s playstyle. This would be an undervalued yet vital attribute that could enhance Arsenal, as having a player that can operate against a low block, a high line, and on the break is scary.

Despite Toney scoring 20 goals in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, Boniface’s statistics are simply a level above, and he has shown that he can offer everything that the Brentford man can and more. The youngster's never-ending ability would make him the final piece of the Arsenal puzzle.

Considering he is in the form of his life and not incredibly overpriced, Arteta must make a move for the Leverkusen ace in January, as all the European giants will be looking to acquire him in the summer. It isn't often that a £52m-rated relatively inexperienced player can be classified as a bargain!

Nigeria make history after sealing U-19 WC spot

They were 91 for 7 at one stage in their chase of 139 against Sierra Leone Under-19s, but Peter Aho did the trick for Nigeria Under-19s to give them a two-wicket win and a place at the Under-19 World Cup – or any global cricket tournament – for the first time. The result gave Nigeria an all-win record in the Under-19 World Cup Qualifier Africa Division One competition, played in Windhoek, with hosts Namibia ending second, followed by Uganda, Sierra Leone, Kenya and Tanzania.Namibia took on Kenya in one of the other matches on the day, and won by 198 runs – they scored 194 for 5 and bowled the opponents out for 96 – to boost their net run-rate in a big way, and a loss for Nigeria would have put the home side in the World Cup.That looked like the case when, in response to Sierra Leone’s 138, Nigeria slipped to 33 for 3, and then lost their seventh wicket with just 91 on the board. But Aho, who had earlier returned 2 for 49, did it with the bat too, walking in at No. 8 and scoring an unbeaten 21 from 32 balls to take Nigeria past the target with 34 balls in hand.Peter Aho smashes one to midwicket•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Earlier in the game, after George Ngegba won the toss and opted to bat, Sierra Leone rode on Haroun Kamara’s 58 in 60 balls from No. 5 to stay in the fight. John Bangura chipped in with 21 and Osman Sankoh 24 as they put up what looked like a low total but turned out to be very competitive.Nigeria struggled in response, even though many of their batsmen got good starts.Olayinka Olaleye scored 16 at the top, Isaac Danladi 25, and Miracle Ikaige 22, but with Sankoh leading the show with the ball for Sierra Leone with 3 for 13 from his ten overs, the wickets kept falling. It needed Aho’s nerveless innings, in which he hit three fours, towards the end to complete the job for Nigeria.Sylvester Okpe, the Nigeria captain, admitted to being “a bit scared” when the chase seemed to have gone off track, but told the ICC, “Today wasn’t supposed to be tough, but the openers [Sierra Leone bowlers Sankoh and Ngegba, who got 2 for 24] made it tough and we almost lost our heads but at the end, we came out strong.”

Villa hold serious interest in star player from the Championship – report

If Aston Villa are to make a major signing or two in the January transfer window, then there's a good chance a new winger will be through the door. The Athletic reports that Villa have considered the possibility of strengthening in that department in 2024, while also looking at a new right-back.

As they note, Leon Bailey is the only true out-and-out winger utilised by Unai Emery this season, and it seems the Spaniard would like some more options at his disposal. Emiliano Buendia suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury before the campaign had even got underway, while Bertrand Traore has hardly kicked a ball for the Villans this year, amassing just 43 minutes before heading to the Africa Cup of Nations with Burkina Faso.

Now, though, it seems that Monchi and Emery have identified a signing that could take Villa's attacking depth to another level.

Villa have "serious" Summerville interest

Dutchman Crysencio Summerville came through the youth ranks at Feyenoord before joining Leeds in 2020 in a £1.3m deal. He's gone on to make 64 appearances for the Whites, featuring in 28 of their 38 Premier League matches last season as they suffered relegation back to the Championship. This year, he's established himself as one of the team's most important players, starting 21 of the 24 second-tier matches for which he's been available (Transfermarkt).

According to Football Insider, Villa are admirers of Summerville and have made him a "long-term target". The club's interest is "serious", but it's worth stressing that the wide-man is subject to a "huge" transfer battle, with Brighton & Hove Albion thought to be interested, too.

rutter-summerville-leeds-opinion

Leeds are currently battling for promotion back to the top flight – they sit fourth in the table and are on course for the play-offs – so they unsurprisingly have "no intention" of letting him leave this month and plan to "resist all offers".

Summerville lights up the Championship

Summerville has been absolutely electric in the Championship this season and has shown signs that he can become a complete winger. To begin with the headline stat, he ranks fourth in the league for goals and has been one of the division's most ruthless finishers, too – only two players in the Championship have out-performed their xG by a bigger margin than his 3.9 (FBref).

The 22-year-old has also been a supreme creative force, notching the seventh-most assists (6), fourth-most expected assists (7.2) and second-most key passes. If his teammates had been a little more clinical, he could be faring even better in this regard.

Summerville is also able to create openings through either passing or dribbling – only two Championship players have recorded more successful take-ons than his 60 and more carries into the penalty area than his 56. He's very hard to stop when he's driving at defences.

You can't dispute journalist Joe Donnohue's claim that he's become an "output machine", nor talent scout Jacek Kulig's verdict that he's been in "sensational" form this season.

Summerville has already shown flashes of what he can do in the Premier League, scoring the winning goal for Leeds at Anfield in October 2022 as part of a run of four in as many matches. That's the only home defeat Jurgen Klopp's side have suffered in the top flight since 2021.

The Leeds man has simply looked too good for the Championship up to this point and he's clearly ready for another shot at the highest level. If Villa can win the hotly contested race, then they could have the perfect winger on their hands long-term.

– Vivo o hoje e o amanhã a Deus pertence.
