Bid sent: Nottingham Forest make offer to sign "special" £47k-p/w defender

Nottingham Forest have reportedly tabled an offer to sign a breakthrough star who impressed at EURO 2024 and has been linked with a move to Arsenal and Manchester United this summer.

Nottingham Forest hoping for improved showing

With just a week to go until the new Premier League season kicks off, Nottingham Forest and Nuno Espírito Santo will be hoping for a better season than the one they endured in 2023/24. The Reds, who kick off their new campaign against Bournemouth, only confirmed their top flight status for this season on the final day of the last campaign, sending Luton Town back to the Championship instead.

In the months since, they have added slowly but surely to their ranks, with their major business coming in the form of signing Elliot Anderson from Newcastle United in a £35m deal, along with Nikola Milenkovic for £12m from Serie A side Fiorentina.

They have also bolstered their frontline with the signing of Jota Silva from Vitoria in a deal thought to have set them back around £6m.

Jota Silva

Business is still expected before the transfer window shuts on August 30th though. As per the reliable John Percy "Forest will look to make further additions" with the "priority" being "two wingers, a forward, a left-back and another goalkeeper" in the final weeks, though they have since added Jota to satisfy one of those targets. Now, they could sign a player who would fill several of those positions.

Forest table bid for Fenerbahce star

That comes as Turkish media report that Nottingham Forest are among the sides to have made an offer for Turkey star Ferdi Kadioglu, who has been linked with a move to the Premier League all summer.

The 24-year-old impressed at EURO 2024 for his nation, helping them to the quarter finals of the competition before they exited at the hands of the Netherlands. He played every minute of the competition at both left-back and left-midfield.

Former teammate Ole Romeny, who played with him at NEC Nijmegen, described him as a "special" talent who is a "top" left back: "The absolute top. He is also special as a left-back, there is no one with those footballing qualities."

Though ostensibly a left-sided player, Kadioglu is one of the most versatile players in Europe, having played across midfield and in both fullback positions so far in his career.

Kadioglu still has two years left to run on his £47k per week deal in Turkey, but that has not stopped interest in his services and Sabah report that Forest have tabled an offer for his services, alongside south coast pair Brighton and Southampton.

There is no mention of how much this offer amounts to, but it is claimed that his current side value him at around 35m euros (£30m) and that the player is keen to play in England despite Fenerbahce being keen to keep him.

Should he prove a competent Premier League level footballer in all of those positions, then £30m could be a cheap way to boost a whole host of depth issues in Nuno's ranks ahead of the new season.

Middlesex chief executive Richard Goatley steps down due to ill health

Middlesex have announced that Richard Goatley, the club’s chief executive, is to step down due to ill health. Goatley, who joined Middlesex as head of finance in 2005 and took over as chief executive from Vinny Codrington in 2015, had not been at work since April after suffering a stroke.”I am sorry to be leaving Middlesex after sixteen wonderful years but my health and family must come first,” Goatley said.”It has been a privilege to have been a part of one of cricket’s iconic clubs and I am sure I will remain in contact in future with brilliant colleagues and the many friends I have made during my time at Lord’s. I would like to express my gratitude to the club chairman, Mike O’Farrell, for his kindness and understanding during a difficult time.”Former Somerset chief executive Andrew Cornish, who joined Middlesex as chief of staff in March, will fulfil the role of acting chief executive while the club begins its search for Goatley’s successor.O’Farrell said: “During his time with us, Richard brought drive and focus to Middlesex cricket which is best demonstrated by the development of the partnership between the club and the MCC. We thank him for his service and commitment and wish Richard and his family well on his path back to full health. We hope to see him at future Middlesex matches when he feels able.”The upheaval continues a difficult season at Middlesex, with the club having won just four out of 18 games in the County Championship and Vitality Blast. Finances are believed to be stretched, due to Covid-19 as well as the discovery of a historical administrative error in paying pension contributions, with a number of players soon to be out of contract and awaiting decisions on their future.

David Ornstein: Southampton in "advanced talks" to sign 20 y/o "monster"

Southampton are in "advanced talks" to sign an "absolute monster" on loan this summer, according to an update from reliable journalist David Ornstein.

Southampton transfer news

The summer transfer window has to be considered a positive one at St Mary's Stadium, with important signings made ahead of Saints' return to the Premier League. Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes were both integral loan players last season, playing a big role in Russell Martin's side getting out of the Championship, so the fact that both have joined on permanent deals is a huge positive, among other additions.

That's not to say that more new players won't come in, however, with Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas linked with a move to Southampton in the coming weeks. The 22-year-old is an impressive up-and-coming young player, and could be viewed as an upgrade on Alex McCarthy.

In midfield, Oliver Skipp and Mandela Keita have also emerged as reported targets, with the former possessing plenty of Premier League experience in a Spurs shirt, but not seen as a key man in north London.

In terms of potential outgoings at St Mary's before the end of the month, Armel Bella-Kotchap looks highly likely to move on, with Hoffenheim one of the clubs believed to be working on getting a deal over the line for him. Now, it looks as though another new signing could be heading to the South coast, following an encouraging claim.

Southampton in "advanced talks" to sign Chelsea gem

Writing on X on Thursday evening, Ornstein said that Southampton are in "advanced talks" to sign Chelsea youngster Lesley Ugochukwu on loan for the 2024/25 season.

While Ugochukwu isn't coming in on a permanent basis this summer, nor is he available to sign next summer, he could be a brilliant addition for Southampton in 2024/25. The 20-year-old Frenchman will add much-needed depth to Martin's midfield, allowing him to rotate effectively during a relentless Premier League season, and he has been lauded by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who has said that he is an "absolute monster in the making".

Ugochukwu has already made 15 appearances for Chelsea, 12 of which have come in the Premier League, so he has shown that he can handle playing in arguably the toughest and biggest league in world football, which can only bode well for Southampton.

Forget Skipp: Southampton moving to sign "exceptional" midfielder

Southampton could forget about signing Oliver Skipp by picking up this gem instead.

ByKelan Sarson Aug 14, 2024

Not only that, but he is now a France Under-21 international after making the jump up from the Under-20s, winning four caps to date and no doubt harbouring dreams of playing for the senior side one day. A loan move to Saints makes sense for all parties, allowing him regular playing time and boosting the South coast club's chances of staying in the Premier League.

Sunderland could now cash in on a player who’s worth as much as Jebbison

Regis Le Bris will have more of a clear idea about what his main Sunderland team looks like after the XI fielded by the Frenchman last Tuesday night – largely consisting of reserve figures – lost 2-0 to Preston North End in the EFL Cup.

The Black Cats will aim to make it two wins from two when they're back in Championship action this weekend though, as Danny Rohl's impressive Sheffield Wednesday outfit come to town fresh off a 4-0 demolition job of a hopeless Plymouth Argyle side.

Regis Le Bris for Lorient.

Romaine Mundle could struggle to worm his way into his manager's good books for the clash with the Owls, however, having struggled to really set the second tier alight during his short spell with Sunderland to date, since joining from Standard Liege in January.

Mundle's time at Sunderland

The former Tottenham Hotspur youngster hasn't ever really settled into his new surroundings, with his role in the Sunderland first-team last season being mainly that of a bit-part player who would occasionally come off the bench.

Mundle only started five games in total in the Championship last campaign from the 11 appearances handed to him after his move from Belgium, with just one strike coming his way too when playing away at Southampton.

It wasn't a great shock to see him on the bench for Le Bris' first taste of competitive action as a manager, therefore, with the likes of Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts light years ahead of him in terms of second-tier experience, as the aforementioned Black Cats number 20 netted in Sunderland's promising opening day victory away at Cardiff City.

For as long as Roberts is still on the books at the Stadium of Light, and with the new addition of Ian Poveda potentially hurting his standing in the rankings even more down the right, Mundle will find it increasingly more and more difficult to stake a claim for a first-team spot in the league, especially after also struggling to help his team beat Preston in the EFL Cup.

Mundle did try his hardest to cut open the Lilywhites from down the right flank, with five successful dribbles during the 90 minutes at Deepdale, but it wasn't enough for him to add to his slim tally of just one Sunderland goal contribution from 13 games.

Therefore, the ex-Spurs youth product could be moved on soon, especially when you consider his transfer valuation is more than Daniel Jebbison's, as per Transfermarkt, who Sunderland fans had been crying out for before news emerged that the Le Bris and Co were ultimately unsuccessful in their advances of signing the striker.

Mundle's worth at Sunderland

Despite struggling since moving back to England, the peak of Mundle's transfer valuation – according to Football Transfers – stands at £1.5m which is equal to Jebbison's valuation.

Indeed, the attacker recently cost AFC Bournemouth £1.5m to snap up, with the Black Cats trying to prise the Cherries man away on a loan deal in a bid to finally land a new signing who can lead the line effectively.

Selling Mundle for around his £1.5m price tag could enable Sunderland to finally secure the services of a potent striker, having had to use Elezier Mayenda up top versus QPR on the opening day, who is still yet to break his senior goalscoring duck for the Black Cats.

As much as Mundle showed signs of some promise in the EFL Cup, losing the 21-year-old wouldn't be catastrophic, owing to Sunderland's options down the right in Roberts and new addition Poveda when he is back to full sharpness.

Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts.

The experienced former Celtic man could be the way forward on the right flank, having shone alongside Clarke away at Cardiff with two key passes registered, as Sunderland continue to hunt down a flashy new striker to line up alongside the 27-year-old.

One of Mundle's ex-youth teammates at Spurs in Dane Scarlett had even been previously lined up to make a move, but with the promising Premier League starlet opting to join Oxford United on loan over making the switch to Wearside putting a spanner in the works, Sunderland are seemingly back to square one over new striker additions.

Rodri's Ballon d'Or triumph over Vinicius Jr. in Paris this year has divided opinions in world football. While some considered the Manchester City star to be a worthy recipient of the Golden Ball, several experts and footballers believed that the Brazilian was robbed of the prize.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Amid all the debate over the Ballon d'Or, Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez has slammed journalists from four countries who completely ignored the Brazilian during the voting process. Vinicius Jr had a dream outing in club football in the 2023/24 season as he played a crucial role in Los Blancos winning the Champions League and La Liga titles. Rodri, on the other hand, won the Premier League trophy for a record fourth season in a row and then helped Spain win their second European Championship title.

WHAT FLORENTINO PEREZ SAID

At an event, the Real president said, "If the journalists from Namibia, Uganda, Albania and Finland had not voted, Vinicius would be the Ballon d'Or [winner]. These countries did not give Vinicius a single vote. Not one! The Finn, at least, has resigned. And he has said that he will not be part of the jury again. Look, I appreciate it.

"The Ballon d'Or must be organised independently and the votes for this award must be in the hands of people of recognised prestige, the coaches, so that everyone understands that their reputation is also at stake with their vote. We do not know who voted for them, from countries we do not know. For all these reasons, Real Madrid considered it appropriate not to attend this edition of the Ballon d'Or gala."

Mitchell Swepson sends final warning before rain forces stalemate

The legspinner was a threat throughout the final of what will be a rematch for in the decider

Daniel Brettig06-Apr-2021Though rain curtailed his chances of delivering an outright victory, Mitchell Swepson showed why he looms as a major threat to New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield final with another outstanding exhibition of wrist spin bowling on the final day of the drawn match in Wollongong.A rematch between these two teams was confirmed when Western Australia were bowled out at the WACA having been set 480 by Tasmania. With the Covid-19 situation having now improved in Brisbane the five-day final appears set for Allan Border Field from April 15-19.Swepson finished with 4 for 59 to take his season tally to 29 wickets at 22.44 from just four Shield matches – either side of a neck injury – and again spun the ball expansively on a deteriorating surface to keep the Blues batsmen wary throughout a day that ended shortly after lunch due to persistent showers.Nathan Lyon was named Player of the Match for his workmanlike figures of 6 for 128 in the Bulls’ first innings of 433, but it was Swepson’s improvement across the course of the game to be the standout threat on the final day that would have excited the Australian selectors most of all.One early leg break that pitched around leg stump and then fizzed past the defensive bat of Jason Sangha underlined the difficulty of facing Swepson. Matt Gilkes was fortunate to survive a vehement lbw appeal when he padded up on the back foot to a delivery that spat out of the footmarks and appeared destined to hit the stumps in the same way Daniel Hughes had been bowled on the third evening.Sangha made it as far as 29 before he flicked Swepson from around the wicket into the lap of the short leg fielder Bryce Street, who somewhat fortuitously hung on. Gilkes went on to his second half century of the match, as part of a young NSW batting line-up that functioned rather better than the older top six that had been routed in their previous game against Tasmania, before edging Brendan Doggett behind in the last over before lunch. When play resumed, Swepson made short work of the debutant Lachlan Hearne, tempting the left-hander into a drive and then zipping a leg break back between bat and pad to rumble the stumps. At this point, the Blues led by only 84 runs with five wickets remaining and more than half the day’s allotted overs to be bowled.Wicketkeeper Baxter Holt eked out 18 deliveries without scoring as the lead advanced by another nine runs, before the rain that briefly interrupted the morning session returned more steadily to hasten the abandonment.

£270,000-per-week duo think Arsenal will sell them alongside Eddie Nketiah

Amid consistent reports linking striker Eddie Nketiah with a high-profile exit from Arsenal this summer, two of his teammates now think they could join him out of the Emirates exit door.

Marseille in talks to sign Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal

The Englishman, who scored six goals in 37 appearances across all competitions under Mikel Arteta last season, made the majority of his appearances off the bench and uncertainty now surrounds his future at the Emirates.

£24 million forward targeted by Ten Hag now set for talks to join Arsenal

His agent will sit down with Gunners officials.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 23, 2024

Nketiah is valued at around £50 million by Arsenal, with reports suggesting that they're using the £35 million fee paid by Monaco for Folarin Balogun last summer as a yardstick for the striker's price tag (Graeme Bailey).

Some reports, including from respected French broadsheet L'Equipe, claim Ligue 1 giants Marseille are attempting to sign Nketiah from Arsenal. Other media sources state that Nketiah has already agreed personal terms with Marseille over a move to France, but the two clubs remain apart in valuation.

The £100,000-per-week forward could well follow Balogun across the channel, and Nketiah would be joining the likes of Mohamed Elneny, Cedric Soares, Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga out of the London Colney exit door this summer.

A host of other players are being regularly tipped to depart – Aaron Ramsdale, Thomas Partey, Reiss Nelson, Jakub Kiwior and Emile Smith Rowe to name a few – but it is also believed that left-backs Kieran Tierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko could be let go as well.

Arsenal have reached an agreement with Bologna to sign Riccardo Calafiori, who is capable of playing at both left-back and centre-half, with this said to have cast uncertainty surrounding the futures of Tierney, Zinchenko and Kiwior.

Tierney spent 2023/2024 on loan at Real Sociedad, while Zinchenko came under fire for some of his performances under Arteta last season.

Tierney and Zinchenko think they'll leave Arsenal this summer

According to TEAMtalk, both Tierney and Zinchenko fully expect Arsenal to let them go this summer.

Arteta has four players who can play left-back, and five if you count the incoming Calafiori. Indeed, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Jurrien Timber, Zinchenko, Tierney and Kiwior are all capable of featuring in that position, so Edu Gaspar and the Premier League title hopefuls will seemingly entertain bids for the latter trio.

Tierney (£120,000-per-week) and Zinchenko (£150,000-per-week) cost the club around £57 million in total to sign from Celtic and Man City respectively, and while both players have served the club brilliantly in flashes, it'll be interesting to see if the Arsenal board green-light their exits in the coming weeks.

Western Australia's Sheffield Shield title push boosted by return of Australia stars

Captain Mitchell Marsh is one of three international players Western Australia have been able to recall for their Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania in Perth where victory will secure a spot in the final.Marsh, Ashton Agar and Josh Philippe are included in the 14-man squad after completing two weeks quarantine after returning from New Zealand. Unlike players from other states, those heading back to Western Australia were required to isolate as the state has not been part of the one-way travel bubble. For Marsh, who yesterday withdraw from the IPL citing bubble fatigue, this will be his first first-class match since October 2019 since when injury, white-ball international selection and Covid-19 hubs have prevented him from playing for his state.Philippe, another who pulled out of the IPL, would also be making his first appearance of the season. Allrounder Agar played three matches in the first part of the Shield, when it was a hub in Adelaide, which included achieving the double of a century and a five-wicket haul against South Australia.Related
