He’s a dream for Jota: Liverpool considering late swoop for PL "superstar"

Liverpool have yet to show their hand in the summer transfer market, with FSG loathe to splurge cash for the sake of… well, spending, really.

Signings. Are they all they are made out to be, glazed and packaged as some gleaming, all-saving solution? Arne Slot has inherited an imperfect team, sure, but he’s also taken the reins at Liverpool – Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, in fact.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

There’s a case that there isn’t anyone actually available on the market that would slot right into the starting line-up, if you’ll pardon the pun.

However, some market opportunities are simply too irresistible to turn from – isn't that the mantra? We’ll buy, chaps, fear not, but only if it’s all just so.

Liverpool's late-stage transfer plans

Back in July, not long after the cameras had first started snapping at Slot, sporting director Richard Hughes, also new, claimed that Liverpool’s summer would lead toward a “crescendo”.

Martin Zubimendi.

That hasn’t really been the case, for the Reds remain the only team across Europe’s top-seven divisions to have refrained from bringing in a first-team signing, coming close to signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in what would have solved the long-standing no. 6 quandary, only for him to reject Anfield's advances.

Now though, according to The Telegraph’s Miguel Delaney, that could be about to change, with Crystal Palace expecting late-window bids for attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze.

The England star’s £60m release clause expired recently but he could still be on the move, with Liverpool weighing up a stunning late swoop.

Why Liverpool want Ebere Eze

Oliver Glasner transformed Crystal Palace last season, restoring rubble to rock following a dreary end to Roy Hodgson’s reign.

If Glasner is the foreman of the Selhurst Park project, Eze is the architect, especially now that Michael Olise has joined Bayern Munich for about £50m.

A skilled and ambitious winger, Eze, who is 25, has been excellent for the Eagles since he signed from Queens Park Rangers for £19.5m in 2020, albeit missing some sizeable chunks due to injuries.

Still, he's been in fine fettle over the past year or two. As per FBref, he ranked among the top 13% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League last year for goals scored, the top 5% for shots taken and the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90.

This makes for nice reading, as far as number-on-page stuff goes, but Eze's brilliance transcends simple numbers, his rank in a tally. Artful and fleet-footed, he is an electric presence down the left flank with so many ways to hurt his opponents.

Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace

He can also operate in a more central attacking-midfield role, shifting through the half-spaces before wheeling away and weaving into the danger area, where he can strike on goal with fearsome intent or use his pace to draw defenders away and create openings for his teammates.

It would be interesting to see how he'd fare at a team like Liverpool's, competing against the likes of Luis Diaz for a starting berth on the left flank, but there's no question that he has the ability to make a difference.

As you can see, he's hardly failed to match Liverpool's starting left flanker over the past year, and he might now even prove to become one of Liverpool's finest forwards, perching alongside Diogo Jota in the starting fold.

Imagine Ebere Eze & Diogo Jota

Stick him on the field, and he shall score. Or assist. Jota would prove to be a worthy partner for any one of the Premier League's finest forwards, for he is one of the most prolific strikers around.

FBref record that the Portuguese ranks among the top 2% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 12% for assists claimed and the top 16% for shot-creating actions per 90, emphasising the level of quality that he graces Anfield's pitch with – if fit, of course.

Diogo Jota and Arne Slot

Jota's a wonderful goalscorer, with high-quality finishing and a remarkable sense of right-place-right-time about him. He's actually been hailed for his "deadly" shooting by analyst Raj Chohan.

Scoring 15 times for the Reds last year despite only starting 19 matches during an injury-hit season, Jota has proved his quality time and time again – with Eze alongside him, Liverpool could finally find the level of striking that eluded them toward the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

No Premier League side created more chances than Liverpool's 102 last season (Manchester City and Newcastle United were joint-second with 97), and the Merseysiders led the way again after two matches of the fresh term, with nine already.

Despite this, there was a level of profligacy about Klopp's unit, hampering the hopes of winning the league title, clinching the Champions League trophy, of triumphing in the FA Cup.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota celebrates

Liverpool burned out. Diaz is great but he's not the most clinical of wingers, while Darwin Nunez has the proverbial heart of the fanbase in his arms but, let's face it, has much to do in the final third before he lives up to that lofty price tag, rising to £85m.

Eze only missed five big chances in the top flight last year and, as noted earlier, ranks among the highest-scoring of his position. Analyst Ben Mattinson has even claimed that he's on his way to becoming a "superstar" – and you wouldn't bet against Liverpool being the club to help him realise that status.

Storm wipe out Thunder in rain-shortened Charlotte Edwards clash

Western Storm clinched a nine-wicket win over Thunder in their rain-disrupted Charlotte Edwards Cup clash at Chester Boughton Hall. The heavens opened one over into Storm’s chase, with the visitors 2 for 0, after Thunder had posted 110 for 8 from their 20 overs. Once the rain cleared almost two hours later, Storm were set an adjusted target of 33 after five overs – meaning they required 31 from 24 balls.Fi Morris broke the back of it by striking four boundaries off Sophia Turner’s first over to take Storm to 21 without loss. Emma Lamb’s first ball dismissed Morris for 19, stumped by Ellie Threlkeld, but Georgia Hennessey and Danielle Gibson comfortably guided Storm to their reduced target with 11 balls to spare.Lamb had looked set to continue her fine form with the bat as she made a quick-fire 21 to lead Thunder’s recovery after the early loss of Georgie Boyce to a brilliant catch from Gibson. But Lamb fell to Lauren Parfitt from the final ball of the Powerplay to leave Thunder 40 for 2.Piepa Cleary and Threlkeld looked well set but Storm took control thanks to a double-wicket maiden from Morris. Gibson took her third catch to dismiss Cleary for 13, with Threlkeld clean bowled for 12.Thunder then slipped to 61 for 5 when Daisy Mullan was bowled by Gibson and the hosts were struggling to post a competitive total.Laura Marshall and Laura Jackson counter-attacked with a brisk 26-run stand, punctuated by a number of well-timed shots down the ground. But Storm keeper Nat Wraith produced an excellent catch to dismiss Jackson for 12 off Lauren Filer and then stump Danielle Collins for 3 from the bowling of Nicole Harvey.Marshall fell in the final over to give Gibson a second wicket, but her 19 had helped Thunder reach their total of 110, before the rain came and brought about a routine victory target.

Newcastle racing to sign "exciting" new winger likened to Arjen Robben

Looking to make up for a quiet summer transfer window, Newcastle United have reportedly sent scouts to watch a player who's been compared to the iconic Arjen Robben.

Newcastle transfer news

The summer transfer window was arguably a failure for all involved at St James' Park. The Magpies failed to strengthen Eddie Howe's starting side past Lloyd Kelly, who arrived on a free deal following the expiry of his Bournemouth contract at the end of last season.

Newcastle sold a striker for just £2m, now he's more clinical than Isak

He’s turned his career around and then some…

ByAngus Sinclair Sep 11, 2024

The big-name consistently mentioned with the Magpies was, of course, Marc Guehi, who ultimately remained a Crystal Palace player after Newcastle failed with a reported bid worth as much as £70m. Then failing to turn towards alternatives, Newcastle must now scramble for options within their current squad until the January window, when they must look to make up for lost time.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell recently spoke on Newcastle's window to forget, telling The Telegraph's Luke Edwards, as relayed by The Athletic: “Eddie was very clear and it’s not up to me after seven weeks to say, ‘We’ll do this and that’, because I’m in a supporting role. Were there options? Of course there were, as that’s the responsibility of the department and Newcastle.

“That’s why we ended up where we did. It was that player or he felt he was comfortable with the quality we have. You can be on multiple deals at any one time, the focus doesn’t have to be that narrow. We probably were too narrow but, coming in mid-July, it’s not my strategy to control, it’s my strategy to support."

With that said and plenty of making up to do, the Magpies have seemingly set their sights on a future star. According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Newcastle have sent scouts to watch Sindre Walle Egeli amid their interest in signing the Nordsjaelland winger alongside Premier League rivals Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Brentford.

The 18-year-old recently made his senior debut for Norway and has earned comparisons to Arjen Robben, summing up just how talented a prospect the teenager is.

"Exciting" Egeli can replace Almiron

Whilst their failure to sign Guehi dominated the headlines, Newcastle's struggle to show Miguel Almiron the door and find a replacement shouldn't be put to one side either. It's something that they may address in 2025, which could see Egeli arrive to make an instant impact.

Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron.

The Robben-like winger has earned plenty of praise in the early stages of his career, including from former youth coach Peder Jalland, who told Netavisen: "He has always had some abilities in the final third in relation to shooting.

"The ability in the box, to show up and be in the right place, and a surprisingly good right foot, which he sometimes forgets himself! He has some abilities there that are special. (Egeli as a player is) very exciting, one I have not seen very often.”

A player on the rise, Egeli may well be the perfect apology gift for a summer to forget for Newcastle fans when the January transfer window swings open.

Talks being held: Liverpool consider late bid for £75m Van Dijk successor

Liverpool won at Anfield, but this time, there was no fusillade of fist pumps showered toward the Kop End, no larger-than-life German zapping around and infecting everyone with his energy.

Arne Slot is a cooler customer, businesslike, unflappable. A charismatic and disarming character at times, yes, but also a level head with his sights set on calmly tinkering away at his talented squad, inherited from Jurgen Klopp, and bringing it into contention at the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

There's of course the return of the Champions League to look forward to too – the revamped group stage draw is on Thursday – which surely means that a new signing should be brought in to allow the Reds to fight across all fronts, with central defence a priority in this regard.

Liverpool hold talks over centre-back signing

According to TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is on a shortlist of options at Liverpool for the week ahead, with Richard Hughes and co not ruling out signing a centre-back.

Sepp van den Berg has been sold to Brentford for £25m while Joe Gomez is assessing his options in the market, and Guehi has the perfect skill set to succeed under Slot's leadership.

Internal talks have been held and Liverpool must now consider whether they wish to fork out the £75m fee that Palace demand. With Newcastle United having lodged four offers already this summer, FSG better act quickly at this late stage of the window.

Why Marc Guehi would start for Liverpool

Crystal Palace signed the defender in an £18m deal three years ago, bringing him in from Chelsea. He has since made 113 appearances and risen to a position as one of England's foremost centre-backs.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Hailed for his "monster" defending by Palace reporter Bobby Manzi, Guehi certainly has what it takes to succeed at a high-flying outfit such as Liverpool, potentially even surpassing expectations and becoming a leading member throughout an illustrious period under Slot's leadership.

Guehi has still only featured five times under Oliver Glasner due to injuries throughout the second half of last season, but he still managed to showcase his technique and ball-playing skills under Roy Hodgson.

Palace haven't started the 2024/25 term with the same aplomb that they finished last year with but the style of football is identifiable and Guehi has been a linchpin, averaging 78.5 touches per game so far, completing 88% of his passes and winning a whopping 75% of his duels (six per game).

Such defensive steel, mixed with an impressive and varied passing game, suggests that he would be perfect for Slot's system and that he might even be the perfect man to succeed Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk – who is out of contract at the end of the season…

The perfect Van Dijk successor

Slot's brand of football carries some slick and stylish – some would say liquid – elements, but two matches in, an extra layer of composure is discernible from what Klopp brought to the table.

Ipswich Town and Brentford have been defeated to start the season off with six points, and while neither display was perfect, Liverpool have yet to concede, leading the way in xGA, which is basically the expected goals conceded from the shots faced, two matchweeks in.

Of course, it's very early in the day, and tougher tests lie ahead, but Liverpool's xGA of 0.89, in simple terms, means that they have stood firm and limited their opponents to half-hearted chances. Having faced 15 shots over the two affairs, xG rules that Liverpool have been less than probable to concede a single goal.

Alisson plays a big part in that, of course, but none bigger than Van Dijk, who has been as imperious as ever across his opening fixtures, protecting his goal against the Bees to keep his 48th clean sheet in 100 Premier League matches at Anfield, losing only twice.

The 33-year-old is one of the greatest defenders in Premier League history, and he's carried his long-standing power into the fresh campaign, notably completing 95% of his passes and winning 65% of his duels thus far, as per Sofascore.

He who is tasked with succeeding the Netherlands and Liverpool captain will face a tough task indeed, though Guehi has the properties to ensure the Reds' defensive strength might continue long into Slot's future at the helm.

England defender Marc Guehi

One of England's standout performers at Euro 2024, Guehi has been described as "one of those versatile CBs who can play both sides equally as comfortably" by analyst Ben Mattinson, adding further depth to the argument that he could replace Van Dijk, who has long dominated from the left side of Liverpool's backline.

The Reds titan issued a cryptic response by Sky Sports pundits when discussing Liverpool's victory over Brentford on Sunday evening, refusing to reveal his or the club's stance on his contract situation, but fans would rest a lot easier knowing that a plan, in one form or another, is in place.

Van Dijk has been described as "the best defender in the world" by Klopp in the past and it's true that he will pass the test of time when football's finest centre-backs are raised for debate.

But he's 34 at the end of the campaign, and may well opt against extending his £220k-per-week contract. Guehi would be a brilliant successor, and FSG must make their move before he falls into rival clutches.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to , PSG have made contact with the forward for a potential transfer in January. However, any deal is expected to face significant hurdles. One of them might be PSG head coach Luis Enrique himself, who was hesitant about signing Osimhen during the summer. Additionally, to finalise a transfer, PSG would need to navigate a three-way negotiation involving Napoli, Galatasaray, and the player himself. Such an arrangement could be difficult to orchestrate in the limited time available during the January transfer window.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Chelsea's past interest in Osimhen adds another layer of intrigue, as the London club could potentially reignite their pursuit if PSG faces difficulties in securing the forward’s signature.

Amid the swirling transfer rumours, Osimhen has publicly stated his commitment to staying with Galatasaray until the end of the season. In a recent interview, he clarified his intentions, saying: "I will not leave in January, I am at Galatasaray until the end of the season. I do not know what Galatasaray and Napoli are talking about afterwards, but if they come to me, we will talk. Galatasaray is a nice club that I like very much. I am very happy at Galatasaray."

Jamie O’Hara slams "frustrating" Tottenham player in Arsenal defeat

As Tottenham Hotspur suffered defeat against North London rivals Arsenal, former midfielder Jamie O’Hara slammed one player who put in a “frustrating” display before coming off.

Tottenham suffer derby defeat once again

With Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Ricardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino all missing, the North London derby handed Tottenham Hotspur the best chance that they’re likely to get this season to gain an edge over Arsenal. Yet, in a repeat of the last campaign, the Lilywhites found themselves on the losing side once more.

Tottenham tell big club they're ready to pay £17m for "magnificent" forward

Spurs have set their sights on a Euro 2024 ace.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 14, 2024

This time, in a more narrow defeat, it was Gabriel Magalhaes who found himself wheeling away in celebration midway through the second half after overpowering Cristian Romero and heading home in style.

The defeat means that Spurs have lost back-to-back games in the Premier League to continue their disappointing form after the international break. The task now falls the way of Ange Postecoglou to find a way to get the best out of his side.

The Austrailian’s first task on that front may well be to replace Brennan Johnson in his side. Or, at least, that’s what O’Hara may believe. The talkSPORT pundit slammed the winger in a post on X, saying: “Brennan Johnson is even more frustrating to watch in the flesh than he is on TV.”

The former Spurs midfielder’s frustration can be justified by Johnson’s poor performance, in which he lost five out of his six duels – just 83% – and had only 25 touches before being withdrawn. Now, as Wilson Odobert continues to step up on his arrival, Johnson may well find his place under threat.

Johnson may lose Tottenham place

After arriving for a reported £48m last summer, Johnson showed plenty of promise in his debut campaign but is beginning to frustrate those around North London. But at just 23 years old, the likes of O’Hara must have patience in their winger, who managed five goals and 10 assists in the Premier League last time out.

Brennan Johnson for Tottenham.

The arrival of Odobert could concern Johnson, however, after he found himself replaced having struggled in the second half against Arsenal. Receiving plenty of the ball, the former Forest star could have been the driving force to an impressive victory for Postecoglou’s side. Instead, he quickly became the point of frustration.

For Spurs as a collective, they must now look ahead to the Carabao Cup and Coventry City, before Ferencvaros in the Europa League and a chance to get back to winning ways in the Premier League against a tough Brighton & Hove Albion side.

Fail to beat Brighton and the concern will only grow for Postecoglou. One thing for sure, another defeat in the North London derby certainly won’t have helped the former Celtic man who is enduring a tough start to his second season in charge.

CSA appoints new majority independent board, reports Rand 250 million loss

New structure diminishes representation and power of Members’ Council, body made of provincial presidents who had resisted a majority independent board for almost a decade

Firdose Moonda17-Jun-2021CSA has ushered in a new, majority independent board to bring an end to the tenure of the ministerially appointed interim board, which has been in charge since November last year. The new board comprises eight independent directors and five non-independents – who were chosen from the provincial presidents that sit on the members’ council – but a chair has yet to be confirmed. The other independent directors are former CSA president Norman Arendse, former convener of selectors Andrew Hudson, advocate Steven Budlender SC, Lawson Naidoo, the executive secretary of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution, Dugmore Lushaba, who has experience on several boards, marketing and communications expert Andisa Ntsubane, former Multichoice (sub-Saharan African video entertainment company) CEO Mark Rayner, and Muditambi Ravele, a sports administrator previously involved in boxing, netball and tennis. Daniel Govender of Kwa-Zulu Natal, John Mogodi of Limpopo Province, Craig Nel of the Mpumalanga Cricket Union, Tebogo Siko of Northerns and Simphiwe Ndzundzu of Border make up the non-independent directors. CSA’s acting CEO Pholetsi Moseki and acting CFO Christelle Janse van Rensburg make up the last two positions on the 14-member board, which will serve till September, when CSA is due to hold its scheduled AGM.The new structure diminishes the representation and power of the members’ council, the 14-member body made of provincial presidents who had resisted a majority independent board for almost a decade. However, the CSA president and vice-president, largely ceremonial roles and individuals who will not sit on the new board, were chosen from the members’ council. Rihan Richards, who has been acting president of the council throughout the interim board’s tenure, was elected president and Donovan May, from Eastern Province, his deputy.CSA also reported a loss of Rand 250 million (US$ 17.8 million) in the 2020-2021 financial year as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and tour cancellations. England left South Africa last December after playing three T20Is but the three ODIs did not go ahead as scheduled after breaches of the bio-secure environment. Australia, who were scheduled to play two Tests in South Africa in March, did not tour at all. South Africa were also hopeful of hosting India for three T20Is last August, which did not happen. Those matches are due to take place in India in September this year, ahead of the T20 World Cup, but that might depend on the schedule for the resumption of the IPL. However, CSA is hopeful of a full summer schedule this year, which should see India visit for three Tests over the festive period.Perhaps more importantly, CSA can look forward to a more stable period of governance with the new board adopting a memorandum of incorporation, which guarantees the independent component of the board and chair.”It is highly appropriate that we have reached this historic moment in the transformation of our governance model as we prepared to celebrate the 30th birthday of Cricket South Africa (CSA) or the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) as it was originally known in just over two weeks’ time,” outgoing interim board chair Stavros Nicolaou said. “Our new Memorandum of Incorporation is a document we can all embrace with pride as it puts us in a position to execute the best governance practices that will make CSA able to stand comparison with any other sporting organisation around the globe. It is a world-class document.”Among the new board’s most pressing tasks will be to oversee the conclusion of former acting CEO Kugandrie Govender’s disciplinary proceedings and to advertise for and appoint a permanent CEO. CSA have not had a permanent CEO since Thabang Moroe was suspended in December 2019. They are on their third acting CEO since.

Opening batter Ibrahim Zadran, who is more known for his long-format credentials, also got a gig with the Tallawahs. Legspinner Shafiqullah Ghafari, who was the second-highest wicket-taker in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup, with 16 strikes at an average of 7.00 and an economy rate of 2.45, will help fill the Rashid-sized void at the Tridents.Sri Lanka legspin-bowling allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who had set the inaugural LPL alight in December, was picked by the Patriots. Pakistanis attract interest
As many as seven Pakistani players will be action this season, including Haider Ali, Usman Qadir, Mohammad Amir, and Azam Khan, who have never featured in the CPL before. Azam, the son of the former Pakistan keeper Moin, has a strike rate of 157.41 in T20 cricket and was part of the Galle Gladiators side that finished runners-up in the LPL last December.Haider went to the Tallawahs, Qadir and Wahab Riaz to the Zouks, and Amir and Azam to the Tridents.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Tearaway Oshane Thomas, who had been released by the Tallawahs, was drafted as a seventh-round pick by the Tridents. Jason Mohammed, who had captained West Indies’ depleted ODI squad on their Bangladesh tour earlier this year, won a deal with the Tallawahs.Ravi Rampaul, who has been playing county cricket for a number of years as a Kolpak player, is set to return to the CPL after four years, having been picked up by the Knight Riders. Tridents sign Smit Patel
Smit Patel, the former India Under-19 wicketkeeper-batter, who has now reportedly moved to the USA, filled up the Tridents’ 17th slot as a Major League Cricket pick. Patel, 28, has played 55 first-class matches and had also participated in the most recent 50-over and 20-over domestic competitions in India for Baroda. According to the draft regulations, a franchise can pick an MLC player, a West Indies local player, or not pick anyone as their 17th pick.
