£50,000-a-week Everton player set to leave Goodison with agreement close

A “fantastic” Everton player is now on the verge of leaving the club in the January transfer window, with an agreement close with another club, according to a new report.

Everton manager & transfer news

Sean Dyche is still battling to save his job at Goodison Park, with Saturday’s 1-0 defeat away to Bournemouth proving to be another hugely uninspiring performance by his Blues side. It means that they are edging towards the Premier League relegation zone, as fears grow about yet another battle to avoid the drop this season.

Massimiliano Allegri has been mentioned as a high-profile and exciting replacement for the current Everton manager, having enjoyed a legendary period in charge of Juventus, winning five Serie A titles and also reaching the 2017 Champions League final.

In terms of potential new signings on the pitch, Real Valladolid centre-back Juma Bah has been linked with a move to the Blues, having won 2.9 aerial duels per game across 10 La Liga appearances this season. The Merseysiders are thought to have made an approach for him, however, Inter Milan could soon strike a £12m deal.

The future of Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been a big talking point of late, and if he does move on in the near future, Brighton striker Evan Ferguson has been mentioned as a replacement. Playing time has been hard to come by at the Amex Stadium this season – only two league starts have come his way in 2024/25 to date – but the young Irishman is a player who could have a massive future in the game.

"Fantastic" Everton player set to leave

According to Tuttosport [via Sport Witness], Torino are closing in on the signing of Everton striker Beto, with an agreement over the transfer “about to be reached”.

The 26-year-old was spotted at Manchester airport over the weekend catching a flight to Turin, with a loan switch potentially set to be completed. There could be an option to sign him for £12.4m permanently at the end of the season.

The £50,000-a-week Beto has been a big disappointment at Everton, with just seven goals in 51 appearances for the club proving to be a poor return.

For that reason, sanctioning his loan exit this month makes sense, even though Richard Pessoa, his former coach at Portimonense, said of him in the past:

“He is a fantastic kid, very hardworking and always wanting to improve. I remember him having a lot of difficulties receiving the ball, and finishing, putting the balls in the corners of the goals. And he always came to me to work on those moments.”

Everton can save millions by unleashing "prolific" teen over DCL & Broja

Sean Dyche will hope this young Everton star can go on to be the answer to their issues in attack.

ByKelan Sarson Jan 6, 2025

In truth, it could be good to offload Beto on a permanent basis at the end of the season, but it is now important that Everton and the Friedkin Group make a new addition to their attack this month, assuming the Portuguese does seal a move to Torino.

Ben Stokes hails 'unbelievable' mindset switch as England power to 3-0 series win

Ben Stokes says that England’s seven-wicket victory in the third Test at Headingley is the most satisfying moment yet in his team’s remarkable renaissance against New Zealand, because the players were able to hold their nerve after collapsing to 55 for 6 on the second afternoon, and stay true to the new attacking approach that has now reaped three impressive run-chases on the bounce.Stokes was not required to bat on the final afternoon as Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root romped to victory in an unbeaten 111-run stand that spanned a mere 14.3 overs, and during the post-match presentation, he admitted that he was astonished by the speed with which England have managed to put behind them a previous run of one victory in 17 Tests, and embrace the positive attitude that he and Brendon McCullum, the new head coach, have put at the forefront of their approach.”When I took over this job, it was more than results for me,” Stokes said. “It was about changing the mindset of the lads towards Test cricket, about having fun, and enjoying the fact that you’re out there representing your country, and the results look after itself.”But to say that we’ve done it so quickly is just unbelievable,” he added. “I can only do so much, so I’ve got to show a huge amount of credit to Brendon, in the way that he’s come in and influenced this group. The backroom stuff and everyone else has played a part in this series, as well, they’ve just been absolutely phenomenal.”To walk away with a 3-0 series win over the best team in the world is a pretty special start. I’ve got to show a huge amount of testament to the team over these three games. They’ve been absolutely phenomenal.”Though Stokes himself contributed important runs in both the Lord’s and Trent Bridge run-chases, England’s thrilling batting was led by his fellow senior players, Root and Bairstow, who scored 396 and 394 runs respectively with two centuries apiece. However, he said that it was the performance of Jamie Overton, who fell agonisingly short of a debut century in the first innings at Headingley, that best epitomised the mentality of his current team.”Trent Bridge last week was incredible but for me, being 55 for 6 and then doing what we managed to do, in the manner that we did it, was probably the most pleasing thing of the series,” Stokes said, after Overton’s 97 helped Bairstow to revive the team’s prospects in a 241-run stand, a new England record for the seventh wicket.Related

“That could have been very easy for us to come back into our shell and say ‘it’s not worked this time, let’s just look to play it out’,” Stokes said. “But having a lad on debut in Jamie, to have the confidence to go out there and play like that, is something special that we’ve created in the group.”The rub-off that we’re having on new guys coming in, it’s more important than us at the moment,” he added. “It’s about guys who are going to come into this changing-room in the future. And I think it’s really set a level for people who want to come and represent England in Test matches, that this is what we’re about.”Another of England’s rookies was a major contributor to the 3-0 victory. Matthew Potts did not get the rewards that his efforts deserved at Headingley, but he still finished his debut series as England’s leading wicket-taker with 14 at 23.28 – including the prized scalp of Kane Williamson in three innings out of four.”Pottsy’s taken to it like a duck to water,” Stokes said. “This week in particular, he will bowl 10 times worse, and probably walk away with a ten-for himself. But this game, he has been just incredible. He’s backed up spell, after spell, after spell, over and over again.”Stokes had praise too for Stuart Broad, who set the tone for England with the wicket of Tom Latham in the first over of the match, and in particular, the spinner Jack Leach, who was named Player of the Match after his maiden Test ten-for, and whose confidence was tangible after receiving the backing from Stokes to bowl more than 70 overs in the match, and with challenging fields.”I wanted to push the lads this week, to really show them what they’re capable of doing,” Stokes said. “Even Broady [Stuart Broad] – 36 years of age, although he probably doesn’t want me to say that – he was bowling 50 overs. And it’s fantastic to see Leachy coming in and taking 10 wickets. It’s been around the corner for him, and I’ve never seen a happier dressing-room for someone’s individual success. It’s been fantastic.”Another player to benefit from the faith invested in him was Ollie Pope, who missed the chance to complete what he had started at Headingley, when he fell in the first over of the final day for 82, but nevertheless finished his maiden series at No.3 with 267 runs at 44.50, including a first century on home soil in the Trent Bridge win.”When we got together to select this squad, we picked the players that we all thought were the best in England in every position, and we certainly got every player in this team at the moment to fill those positions,” Stokes said. “Popey’s been fantastic the season for Surrey, he’s carrying that form over into England as well, and he’s really starting to show the world what Ollie Pope is all about.”There’s little time for England to reflect on their achievement, however. On Friday, they will be at Edgbaston, taking on India in the fifth Test of the series that was postponed due to Covid-19 last summer. England are currently 2-1 down, and so need a victory to secure a share of the spoils, but Stokes promised that there would be no holding back from the attitude on display this past month.”It’s crazy to think about that, isn’t it?” he said. “It’s obviously a completely different opposition, and we’ve still got a series to try and draw. But we’ll be thinking about us and, trust me when I say this, we’ll be coming out with exactly the same mindset, even though it’s a different opposition.”

Solanke backup, £41.5m Inter star: 5 players Spurs should sign this month

It would be fair to say that Tottenham Hotspur’s season hasn’t gone exactly to plan, sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table as we enter the second half of the campaign, but there is still a lot to play for.

Ange Postecoglou’s side still have a shot at silverware, having made it to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, and they are on course to progress to the next stage of the Europa League.

However, with injuries beginning to mount up, Postecoglou will likely have to bring in some more reinforcements this January after goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky if his side are to stand any chance of going on to have a successful season.

Indeed, the Lilywhites are stuck in mid-table and are well off the pace in the race to simply secure European football of any description for next season.

Following their north London derby defeat to Arsenal, Spurs had won just one of their previous nine top-flight games, and sit 11 points off the final Conference League spot.

New recruits could help Spurs enjoy a resurgent spell in the second half of the season, but having spent plenty of money in the summer on the likes of Archie Gray and Dominic Solanke, it remains to be seen how much funds are still available to Daniel Levy and co.

4 players who could leave Tottenham Hotspur this January

Could there be activity through the exit door in N17 this winter?

ByDominic Lund Dec 31, 2024

Let’s take a look at five players they should look at signing in the January transfer window.

1 Bryan Mbeumo Brentford

Brentford'sBryanMbeumocelebrates scoring

Bryan Mbeumo appears to be ready to take the next step of his career after starring for Brentford over the last five years, contributing to more than 100 goals in red and white. The Cameroon international has gone from strength to strength with the Bees and is now the star man in Thomas Frank’s attack following the departure of Ivan Toney.

Still aged just 25 and now seemingly at the peak of his powers, Mbeumo can play in a variety of attacking positions, so he could be just what Postecoglou needs in the final third to challenge the likes of Son Heung-min, Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski out wide, while also covering for Dominic Solanke through the middle.

Meanwhile, the future of Richarlison has been a hot topic of conversation, so Mbeumo could potentially replace the Brazilian, and with Tottenham reportedly interested, it could be one to watch.

ByCharlie Smith Oct 7, 2025 2 Johnny Cardoso Real Betis

Tottenham currently have an option to buy midfielder Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis in the summer transfer window after negoatiitng the deal during Giovani Lo Celso’s move to Betis, however, there are rumours Spurs could look to sign the USA international six months early.

The 23-year-old has a £67m release clause in his contract and can play as a holding midfielder or central midfielder, with Postecoglou arguably needing someone like Cardoso right now instead of the summer.

Spurs currently have Yves Bissouma as a midfield option, but there is talk he could depart north London in 2025, potentially opening the door for someone like Cardoso to come in as a replacement.

3 Patrick Dorgu Lecce

Tottenham’s lack of defensive options is not limited to the centre of defence, with left-back Destiny Udogie expected to miss the next six weeks due to a thigh injury.

Djed Spence got the nod on his unfavoured side against Newcastle, while Sergio Reguilon is also back in contention, but the Spaniard is reportedly desperate to leave during the January transfer window.

As such, Postecoglou may well need to bring in a new option at left-back, and the 59-year-old is seriously considering a move for Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu.

The 20-year-old’s performances for Lecce have earned him a Denmark call-up this season, and he was praised for the part he played in the 2-0 victory against Switzerland.

Dorgu is enjoying his second season playing regular football for Lecce, bagging three goals already this term, and he could push Udogie for a starting spot in the years to come if he were to arrive in north London.

4 Davide Frattesi Inter

Signing a new defender and goalkeeper is likely to be a priority for Postecoglou this winter given the frailties in those positions. However, strengthening in other areas is not out of the question.

Spurs have reportedly made an enquiry for Inter’s Davide Frattesi, and there are signs that a deal could happen, with the midfielder thought to be keen on leaving due to a lack of game time.

The Italian is extremely impressive going forward, ranking in the 99th percentile for non-penalty goals and the 91st percentile for assists per 90 over the past year compared to players in his position.

The 25-year-old’s unhappiness at the San Siro indicates that a deal could be possible this winter, and he could be a solid addition for Postecoglou in midfield given his attacking numbers.

5 Evan Ferguson Brighton

Evan Ferguson is likely to leave Brighton & Hove Albion this January, at least on a loan deal, and a number of Premier League clubs are racing for his signature, with Tottenham amongst the potential suitors.

Dominic Solanke has looked impressive over the past few weeks, scoring against the likes of Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester United, but the Englishman can’t be expected to start every game if Spurs are to compete on all fronts.

Richarlison bagged 11 Premier League goals last season, but the Brazilian has been injured for much of the current campaign, and an alternative for Solanke is needed.

Tottenham could sign colossal 6 foot 6 centre-back for just £14m in January

Spurs badly need central defensive reinforcements.

2 ByEmilio Galantini Jan 4, 2025

As such, Ferguson would be a low-risk signing for Spurs on a loan deal, and the Irishman has already proven that he has what it takes to score in the Premier League, bagging a combined 12 goals in his previous two seasons.

The 20-year-old has previously been dubbed a “superstar” by Danny Murphy, and if he impresses on loan in north London, he could push for a permanent transfer in the future, making him an attractive option this month.

With injuries becoming a problem, Tottenham will need to strengthen in a number of areas if they are going to have a successful season, but bringing in more backline options is a must for Postecoglou.

Hopefully we can do that, make the finals again and put ourselves in a position to compete for the title.”Renegades finished second on the table last season to make it to the finals stage but lost to Adelaide Strikers in the Challenger.Harmanpreet primarily batted at No. 4 with Renegades last time and averaged 58.00 while striking at 130.96 with three half-centuries. Her 18 sixes were also the most by a player in the last season.”Harmanpreet is one of the best players in the world, her record speaks for itself,” Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said. “She was outstanding for us last season and was a match-winner on multiple occasions, having a prolific impact across the tournament with both bat and ball.”As an experienced player, Harmanpreet’s leadership and calm approach under pressure was a huge asset for our team. She was a great fit both on and off the field and really bought into our team environment.”After not being able to play games in Melbourne last season, we know our fans will be thrilled about the prospect of watching Harmanpreet in action in WBBL08.”

"Terrific" £15m player "would love" Newcastle to make new move for him

A “terrific” Newcastle United target “would love” to move to St. James’ Park, and a deal for a fee of around £15m is possible, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Newcastle returning to form

After an inconsistent start to the Premier League season, Newcastle have shown signs of a return to form over the past few weeks, sealing three wins on the bounce with a 4-0 victory against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday.

The Magpies have been particularly impressive from an attacking point of view, scoring 18 goals in their last five matches in all competitions, and the ever-reliable Alexander Isak was in fine form in front of goal on Saturday, bagging his first hat-trick for the club.

As such, a new striker may not be at the top of Eddie Howe’s shortlist heading into the January transfer window, but he has been looking at strengthening at the opposite end of the pitch for quite some time.

Back in the summer, Newcastle were in negotiations with Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, but they failed to get a deal over the line and Nick Pope has remained the first-choice option this season.

However, the Magpies have now renewed their interest in the 22-year-old, and they are expected to make a move in 2025, with a summer move more likely as the Clarets are unlikely to want to sell one of their key players during a promotion race. Jacobs has now dropped a positive new claim on Trafford’s potential move to St. James’ Park, saying on NUFC Matters as relayed by TBR Football:

“James Trafford we know has a bit more of a concrete history. Newcastle had negotiated and had pushed and made an offer,”

“The player would love Newcastle to make another formal approach. The feeling is that Trafford might be available for £12-15m all in and Newcastle may be able to make that one work. So Trafford could be one to watch.”

Trafford could be one for the future for Newcastle

Considering his age, the Englishman is not yet in the prime of his career, but he is showing signs that he could be a solid long-term replacement for Pope, who is now 32 years old.

England'sJamesTraffordduring the warm up before the match

Former Burnley manager Vincent Kompany lauded the shot-stopper as “terrific” last season, although his efforts weren’t enough to prevent the Clarets from being relegated from the top flight.

A clean sheet percentage of 57.1% over the past year places the former Bolton Wanderers man in the 98th percentile compared to his positional peers, highlighting just how well he has been performing in recent times.

As such, Newcastle should continue to pursue Trafford, particularly considering he would be keen on a move to St. James’ Park, and the deal is relatively affordable at just £15m or slightly less.

PSG are officially uncatchable at he top of Ligue 1 after beating Angers 1-0 on Saturday at Parc des Princes. Desire Doue's goal proved decisive, as the club won the league for a fourth successive season. They have now lifted the trophy no fewer than 13 times.

PSG's triumph is made all the more remarkable by the fact that only one team have won the title earlier in the season. That was also PSG, but in 2016, with eight games to spare. Remarkably, despite their repeated dominance in French football, they have never completed an unbeaten season. That could happen in 2024-25, however, and they would also become the first French team to do it. In Europe, only six teams have gone unbeaten throughout Europe's top five leagues: Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus, Arsenal, AC Milan, Perugia, and Preston North End.

PSG could cap the season with a quadruple. They have already won the French Super Cup and have reached the Coupe de France final, where they will face Reims. In the Champions League, they play Aston Villa in the quarter-finals.

Former Wycombe defender turned EFL pundit Joe Jacobson has told : "Wrexham’s a little bit different. Yes, they have the money, but it feels like they have a lot of players, and their squad at the moment is geared towards just getting out of that division.

"They did it in the Conference, they did it in League Two, and now they’re doing it in League One, just getting the best players for that division there and then. It’s not like they’re signing players for a five-year plan and for the future – it’s instant success."

Barcelona willing to offer Man Utd £221k-p/w ace in exchange for Rashford

Manchester United could now reportedly be offered a swap deal for Marcus Rashford which would see him depart Old Trafford in exchange for another forward as soon as the January transfer window.

Man Utd and Rashford on course to part ways

Just weeks into Ruben Amorim’s time in charge of Manchester United, it seems that Rashford’s future lies away from Old Trafford. The Englishman has been left out of the squad for each of his side’s last three games, including the Manchester derby in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham.

It comes after he admitted that he felt he needed a new challenge away from the north west.

“For me, personally, I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps”, he told the media, before adding that he felt his best years remained ahead of him.

“I don’t expect my peak to be now. I’ve had nine years so far in the Premier League and that’s taught me a lot, that’s helped me grow as a player and as a person. So I don’t have any regrets from the last nine years. I won’t have any regrets going forward because I take things day by day and sometimes bad things happen, sometimes good things happen. I just try and keep a fine balance.”

For their part, Manchester United are willing to cash in on their homegrown star, who tops their wage bill with a massive £375,000 a week. Of course, that salary will be a major sticking point for any potential suitors, with few clubs on the planet able to afford that on top of what is likely to be a hefty transfer fee for the England international.

However, now one club have reportedly proposed a way out of what threatens to be a prolonged standoff.

Barcelona ready swap offer for Rashford

That is according to a fresh report from Spain, which claims that Barcelona are readying an audacious swap deal in a bid to try and sign Rashford in January.

The report claims that the Blaugrana are ready to offer up their own forward Ansu Fati in exchange for the 27-year-old, and even add that the club have “begun working on negotiations”.

Like Rashford, Fati is out of favour at his club and taking home a hefty salary (£221k per week in his case). Still just 22-years-old, injury and form have seen him start just a single La Liga game this season.

Barcelona winger Ansu Fati.

However, he is undoubtedly talented, inheriting Lionel Messi’s shirt at Camp Nou and singled out for praise by former boss Xavi, who dubbed him an “extraordinary” talent after working with him.

Despite this, a deal seems farfetched, especially with Barcelona already struggling with their salary cap to the point where they cannot register summer signing Dani Olmo for the second half of the season as things stand.

Adding Rashford to the mix may only make the situation worse, while United would surely demand a fee on top of the arrival of an injury-plagued Fati for any deal to materialise.
