Influential Tottenham figures working on January deal for £34m "champion"

High-ranking Tottenham Hotspur chiefs are reportedly attempting to beat an elite club to the signing of a very highly-rated player, but time is running out for the under-pressure Ange Postecoglou to get his first outfield signing through the door.

Tottenham have lost 12 top flight games already, and for the first time in decades at this stage of a season. The Lilywhites are also yet to win a single Premier League game in 2025, with their 5-0 victory at Southampton in mid-December last year being their last set of three points.

Postecoglou’s sit 15th in the table as a result, closer to the relegation zone than European qualification places, and this is pretty unacceptable. They take on Hoffenheim in the Europa League on Thursday, with fellow strugglers Leicester City in line soon afterward, as Postecoglou looks set for a crucial week at N17.

Off the field, chairman Daniel Levy, technical director Johan Lange and the Spurs recruitment team are working to try and acquire Postecoglou more additions in a few key areas. £12.5 million goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky still stands as their only January incoming, and this is something the north London club’s hierarchy will be eager to change quickly.

Antonin Kinsky for Spurs.

Tottenham are reportedly still in the market for a new attacker after missing out on a loan deal for PSG outcast Randal Kolo Muani, who opted to join Serie A heavyweights Juventus instead.

Spurs held discussions over Kolo Muani last week, but were beaten to the Frenchman’s signature by Thiago Motta’s side, as attention now turns to who they could bring in as an alternative before February 3.

As per GiveMeSport and other media sources, Lyon winger Rayan Cherki could be a option for Tottenham, and it is believed he’ll be allowed to leave for a bargain price tag around the £25 million mark.

They’re also looking to reinforce their backline, with Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu believed to be a serious transfer target.

Influential Tottenham figures working on Patrick Dorgu deal

GiveMeSport have another update on Levy and Lange’s transfer plans, involving the exciting Denmark international.

Patrick Dorgu scores for Denmark

GMS write that “influential” figures at Tottenham are attempting to beat Man United to the signing of Dorgu, and they’re actively working on a deal for the 20-year-old behind-closed-doors.

Destiny Udogie is still out with a hamstring injury, exposing their lack of depth behind the former Udinese sensation, with Dorgu viewed by many as a potential like-for-like alternative to the Italian.

Dorgu’s price tag stands at around £34 million, and going by Lecce sporting director Pantaleo Corvino’s comments, the defender could be worth every penny.

“He is a potential champion. Correction: he is a champion,” said Corvino. “Whether as a full-back or winger, he runs for three, has an eye for goal, and possesses an engine unmatched by anyone else.”

It is worth noting that the versatile full-back is one of Lecce’s star performers, both in an attacking and defensive sense. According to WhoScored, Dorgu averages their joint-second most tackles on average, whilst also attempting their second-highest rate of shots per 90 behind forward Nikola Krstovic.

Maxwell and fielding in the spotlight as Australia look to arrest pre-World Cup blip

Things appear to be coming together nicely for England but a couple of selection questions remain

Andrew Miller13-Oct-2022Big picture Momentum is loosely aligned to confidence, but it’s a broadly nonsensical concept in professional sport – after all, if you’ve allowed yourself to live by it, presumably you’ll be obliged to die by it too. Sure, winning is all very well, but sometimes knowing where you went wrong is every bit as important. Take Aaron Finch’s blunt post-match comments in Canberra, where he pinpointed Australia’s “sloppy” fielding for the eight-run defeat that left them 2-0 down going into what is now Friday’s dead-rubber against England.Who knows where that momentum would be headed now, had Australia’s butter-fingers not offered up three clear-cut chances in the midst of Dawid Malan’s and Moeen Ali’s crucial 92-run stand for the fifth wicket. Or if Tim David hadn’t walked across Sam Curran’s leg-stump yorker with the game at his mercy in the 18th over of the chase. So with just over a week to go until the start of their respective T20 World Cup campaigns, here we are – with England’s rebooted white-ball team now boasting back-to-back away series wins after a blank home summer, and Australia seemingly in a scramble for their own readiness after a pair of untimely setbacks.Related

Livingstone targets England's final T20 World Cup warm-up for return from injury

Malan relishes return to No. 3 as cool Sam Curran ices England victory

Is Stokes among the best seven T20I batters in England?

And yet, as the Aussies know all too well from their own exploits in the UAE 12 months ago, history is bunk, especially in the T20 format. On that occasion they went into the World Cup with a troubling litany of setbacks stretching back five series and 18 months, through losses to England, India, New Zealand, West Indies and Bangladesh – and even then they got panned by eight wickets, and with 50 balls to spare, by a Jos Buttler masterclass in the group stages in Dubai. What happened thereafter, however, rather scotched any notion of prep.Certainly the team that Australia put out for the Canberra defeat was not far from the side that they would wish to take into their opening fixture against New Zealand on October 22. Ideally they’d like Glenn Maxwell to find a semblance of form, and for their big-three seamers – Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood – to prove a touch more incisive than their collective analyses of 2 for 110 in 12 overs, but there’s not a lot that they would seek to improve personnel-wise, even after this latest loss.It is England, by contrast, who still have a few key decisions to nail down. In particular, the Ben Stokes question, which looms over every aspect of their build-up. He’s scraped together a grand total of 17 runs from 20 balls across two innings, and his dismissal on Wednesday – a wild heave at Adam Zampa in a match situation that probably afforded him time to build into his innings – did little to dispel the swirling doubts about his role. But then, up he popped with an economical display in a rare new-ball role, followed by a first-ball breakthrough at the start of his second over, and by the time he’d pulled off the evening’s most startling feat of athleticism – a stunning one-handed boundary-save at long-off – his thirst for the action was once again self-evident. If finding a place for a man like Stokes is your major concern … well, it’s the proverbial “good problem to have”, isn’t it?Recent form Australia LLWWL(last five completed T20Is, most recent first)
England WWWWLGlenn Maxwell walks off after another low score•Getty ImagesIn the spotlightSo, momentum eh… what does Glenn Maxwell make of that phenomenon? He barely played a shot in anger at the last T20 World Cup – at least, not until the final, when his unbeaten 28 from 18 balls powered Australia over the finishing line against New Zealand, after he had contributed a grand total of two boundaries to their previous six tournament fixtures. Such are the reasons to believe he’ll be alright on the night this time around too, even though his slump in the past few months has been every bit as eye catching. He’s managed 51 runs in 61 balls since the start of June, and a gruesome 16 from 33 in the past month – in which his 8 from 11 against England on Wednesday was his highest, joint-longest and fastest-paced knock in six attempts. As Stokes might attest, No. 4 can be a tough berth to nail in this format, but unless Steven Smith gets a final chance to find his own form, Maxi’s pedigree may yet be trusted to tough this one out.Twelve months ago, Sam Curran was sitting in the Sky Sports studio, watching his team-mates pursue glory without him while he nursed a stress fracture in his back – an injury that was still hanging over him at the start of the English season when he was limited to 10 overs in his first three Championship matches of Surrey’s season. Now, with a love of the limelight that he has previously displayed for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, Curran has pounced on an opportunity to be England’s missing link in the middle order – a bowler with deceptive versatility who has sent down 31 of his 32 available overs in Pakistan and Australia this winter, for a world-class haul of 12 wickets at 19.33 and an economy rate of 7.48. His left-arm line has always been a challenge, particularly his deceptively steep bouncer, but Curran seems to have added extra pace since his injury – his game-changing yorker to Tim David was timed at 137kph. His batting hasn’t yet fired, but the threat he poses is undeniable, and his place in that first-choice XI is surely now indisputable.Team news The XI played on Wednesday was widely considered Australia’s starting side for the World Cup. They may give them another run, but also there’s a chance they will rotate again. Although he passed his concussion test, David Warner may be given the night off after his heavy landing near the boundary on Wednesday. Kane Richardson could be worth another outing before the real thing starts – his cutters may suit a somewhat sticky Canberra surface – Josh Inglis has not played since the India tour and there remains some uncertainty over the status of Ashton Agar.Australia (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch (capt), 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Tim David, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh Hazlewood/Kane RichardsonChris Jordan lost his central contract earlier this week, and – whisper it – maybe he’s close to losing his banker status as England’s go-to death bowler. Curran’s death overs in recent weeks have been exceptional, as have Reece Topley’s, while Chris Woakes – who is likely to get another warm-up outing here – offers a wise head at the crunch too. With Mark Wood also itching for another trot before the main event, it will be instructive to see if Jordan gets another chance to find his form on Friday, as he battles back from his long-term hand injury. On the batting front, Liam Livingstone must be nearing full fitness after his ankle injury, and while England originally earmarked this week’s Pakistan match as his comeback game, there may be a temptation to test-drive him sooner, especially with Stokes not yet firing, and with the series already in the bag.England (probable) 1 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 2 Alex Hales, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Ben Stokes, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 David Willey, 11 Adil Rashid.Pitch and conditions The surface wasn’t a road for the opening game with free-flowing strokeplay not easy from the outset. It made the quality of Malan’s innings stand out and also David’s striking. The weather forecast isn’t promising with heavy rain set to sweep through the capital, although there remains some hope that it will clear through in time for the game. There shouldn’t be problems with drainage.Stats and trivia Moeen Ali, who will be playing his 65th match, needs 13 runs to reach 1,000 in T20I cricket. Glenn Maxwell (still) needs one six for 100 in T20Is. His last six in the format came in Pallekele on June 11Quotes”We are probably ready to go, I think. Maybe just in a holding pattern now for another two games. Sort of feels that way in the camp. We know our game pretty well in Australia.”
“When the big games come, he’ll score runs and that’s what you want from your gun players. Ben offers so much even if he’s not scoring runs: he opened the bowling [in the second T20I] and bowled really well and he was brilliant in the field.”

21 y/o forward now set for Hull City medical as Selles goes into overdrive

It has been a very busy January for Hull City, and with a week left in the window, it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any quieter, as an “incredible” player is set for a medical as he is poised to join the Tigers, according to a reporter.

Hull City January signings

Ruben Selles joined the Championship side at the beginning of December, and he has been given the task of getting Hull out of the relegation zone and further up the Championship table. It has been an inconsistent period for the Tigers, but a 3-0 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane last time out is surely the highlight of their campaign so far.

There is still a lot of work to do for Hull to be firmly away from the bottom three, and Selles can obviously see that, as he’s brought in six new players this month. One signing the Tigers made was bringing Joe Gelhardt on loan for the remainder of the campaign from Leeds United. Hull have also added Lincoln on loan from Turkish giants Fenerbahce and have made the permanent additions of Kyle Joseph and Matt Crooks from Blackpool and Real Salt Lake, respectively.

Nordin Amrabat also joined the Championship side on a free transfer, and their latest capture is midfielder Eliot Matazo, who has joined on a three-and-a-half-year deal from AS Monaco. After signing for Hull, Matazo spoke of his delight at joining the club. He said: “It’s a very ambitious project with great ideas, and I’m also a very ambitious person. We match together.”

21 y/o forward now set for Hull City medical

The Tigers are not stopping at six signings, as according to BBC Radio Humberside journalist James Hoggarth, Louie Barry is set to undergo a medical at Hull City before joining on a loan deal from Aston Villa.

The 21-year-old, who has been dubbed “incredible” by England midfielder Declan Rice, spent the first half of this season on loan at League One side Stockport County, where he scored 15 goals in 23 league appearances. This was his second spell at Stockport, as he was their last season, helping the club get promoted from League Two.

Barry’s form in League One impressed his parent club, and they decided to trigger their option to bring the player back to Villa Park with the idea of sending him back out on loan to a higher division. It’s been unclear where the forward could go, as Leeds, Celtic, and Middlesbrough have all been credited with an interest in signing Barry, but Hull appear to have won the race.

Barry’s ability to play anywhere across the front and his eye for not only goals but creating chances, means he will bring an added quality to Hull’s attack that they have missed all season. Barry’s arrival will see him fight with the likes of Abu Kamara, Liam Miller, and Dogukan Sinik for a starting spot in the wide areas.

Warwickshire lose their way as trapdoor opens in madcap final hour

Dramatic top-order collapse reawakens fears of return to Division Two

Warwickshire endured a nightmarish start to their second innings at the end of the second day to slip deeper into relegation trouble and give Gloucestershire hopes of their first Championship win of the season.A side that won the Championship last season by dint of gritty, earnest cricket, rushed headlong towards relegation with a frenzied batting display against Gloucestershire’s new-ball bowlers which saw them reach the close at 58 for 5, only 77 ahead. Without Alex Davies’ unbeaten 41, they would have been in a sorrier mess.Considering the shenanigans at Chelmsford, and to a lesser extent at the Ageas Bowl, it should be underlined that this has been a challenging, but reasonable enough September surface, offering plenty of encouragement for the new-ball bowlers, slow turn for the slow bowlers and some uneven bounce. More raised eyebrow than slap on the wrist. It has made for immensely watchable cricket, even if a three-day finish is on the cards.Warwickshire’s sporting director Paul Farbrace, who is stepping down at the end of the season, said: “It was a very tough last hour. There have been some crazy sessions and mad hours elsewhere in the country this week and it was our turn today. But Alex Davies showed some real fight to see it through to the close and, providing we can put on more runs and get to at least 150 tomorrow, we could still be okay. Anything above that and the pressure starts to swing the other way.”Gloucestershire’s return to Division One has been a galling experience, but the Bristol crowd was besides itself with pleasure as Tom Price, surprisingly entrusted with the new ball at the Ashley Down End in preference to Ajeet Singh Dale, took four wickets in his first three overs and must have looked on in wonder as he delivered his bustling fast-medium to an array of four slips.Price, a 22-year-old who cut his cricket teeth in Great and Little Tew CC in the Cherwell League, now has 25 wickets at only 21.08 for the season and considering Gloucestershire’s travails has pronounced himself their breakthrough player of the season. Apart from the left-arm spinner, Zafar Gohar, who has had a sturdy season in adversity, and Ryan Higgins, who has not been seen since Cheltenham and is returning to Middlesex, no other Gloucestershire bowler has taken more than 15 wickets. With Kent and Somerset thriving midway through the penultimate round of matches, defeat for Warwickshire could well plunge them into the bottom two. The draught of relegation will also be reaching Yorkshire, who are under the cosh against the leaders at at Kia Oval. Indications are that there will be much left to play for in the final week.Price’s most meaningful moment arguably came with only his second delivery. Dom Sibley had batted through Warwickshire’s first innings for six-and-a-half hours for an unbeaten 120, but he made a second-ball duck second time around as Price seamed one back to win an lbw decision. He said afterwards that it was the dismissal that gave him hope – “he was the rock we could not get past on the first day” – but he felt he had bowled better first time around.Rob Yates dragged on against David Payne before Price could take up the challenge again. He won another lbw decision in his second over when Sam Hain, perhaps determined to escape the tortuous manner of his first innings, stepped across to leg to try to work the ball through the leg side.In his next over, the skipper, Will Rhodes, edged to the wicketkeeper as Price seamed one across him. Jayant Yadav was so offended by his third-ball nought – another keeper’s catch for James Bracey – that he gave the umpire a death stare for fully six seconds before making his way off the field. The umpire lived to tell the tale – and will probably tell it on an official form.Warwickshire had not identified the surface as a seam bowler’s paradise, quite the contrary. They bowled only 20 overs of pace in their 74.3 overs in the field, relying on the combined spin efforts of Yadav (who was excellent for his 5 for 90) and Danny Briggs (3 for 79) as they dismissed Gloucestershire for 255 to claim a paltry first-innings lead of 19.Gloucestershire’s familiar failings emerged once more as they lost half their side for 95. Ben Charlesworth received a snorter from Ryan Sidebottom, who was otherwise expensive, but there were some weak top-order dismissals against the spinners. Briggs defeated Miles Hammond’s attempts to advance and hit him down the ground, and Yadav, who is in his first spell in county cricket at 32, bowled Bracey as he lurched blindly at a straight, well-flighted delivery. Bracey began the season with 177 against Yorkshire, and briefly encouraged talk of an England return, but he has largely struggled since.A stand of 90 in 23 overs before Jack Taylor and Graeme van Buuren righted matters, Van Buuren entrusts largely to the back foot, and Yadav eventually hunted down his quarry, turning one to hit off stump as he laid back to cut. Taylor’s 71 from 106 balls was a typically free-spirited affair, a 50-over type of innings in a Championship relegation affair, adorned by five sixes, three of them down the ground against Yadav and two pumped into the Mounds Stand at deep midwicket off Briggs. They love him in Bristol, but prospects of some happy chatter over the tea interval departed when he edged Briggs to slip from what became the last ball of the session. It was still Warwickshire’s game. Their lead was 73 with three wickets to get. Complete the job and the match was as good as theirs. They reckoned without Gohar, one of the most unsung overseas players and one of the worthiest. His batting is always plucky and occasionally unorthodox. By the time Yadav bowled him, attempting a reverse sweep, his 55 from 82 balls had trimmed the lead to 19 and he might still have a part to play with the ball if Gloucestershire are finally to taste victory.

That is according to credible media sources, including the likes of Fabrizio Romano and Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, with the latter even claiming that Tel could now stay at Bayern despite appearing to wave goodbye to supporters earlier this week.

In any case, it is a seismic blow for Tottenham, who suffered their second high-profile, public rejection of the window after Randal Kolo Muani decided to choose Juventus over a move to north London (Fabrice Hawkins).

Now, in an attempt to save face and back manager Ange Postecoglou with a much-needed centre-back, Levy and Lange are said to be in advancing talks over signing AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori.

The Rossoneri want this deal done as much as Spurs, but in the event Postecoglou’s side suffer their third rejection and can’t agree terms with Tomori, then some media sources are claiming that Chelsea defender Axel Disasi is on their radar as an alternative.

Tottenham exploring loan deal for Chelsea defender Axel Disasi

As per CaughtOffside, Tottenham are exploring a loan deal for Disasi, with the Frenchman’s mooted move to Aston Villa appearing to stall.

Disasi

Postecoglou is waiting to find out the extent of Radu Dragusin’s injury problem, and if he’s set to be out for a long period, there is absolutely no question that Tottenham need to get a centre-back over the line before the February 3rd deadline.

Disasi can play as both a centre-back and right-back, plugging two gaps at once for Postecoglou, and he’s been praised for his past form at Reims as a “dominant” defender.

Despite falling down the pecking order at Chelsea this season, Disasi has also been called a “leader” at the back when at his very best.

Sri Lanka level series 1-1 after Asalanka, Wellalage help ace 314 chase

Ibrahim Zadran’s 162 and Rashid Khan’s four-for in vain as hosts get over the line by four wickets

Andrew Fidel Fernando30-Nov-2022Sri Lanka 314 for 6 (Asalanka 83*, Mendis 67, Rashid 4-37, Nabi 2-56) beat Afghanistan 313 for 8 (Ibrahim 162, Najibullah 77, Rajitha 3-60) by four wicketsCharith Asalanka produced the innings of his ODI career so far, hitting 83 high-pressure runs off 72 balls to help Sri Lanka orchestrate a record chase of 314 at Pallekele and help his side level the three-game series 1-1.While Asalanka produced the roaring finish Sri Lanka’s ininngs required, with some help from Dasun Shanaka and Dunith Wellalage, Kusal Mendis had delivered the early impetus, breezing to 67 off 61 balls in an opening stand worth 101 with Pathum Nissanka.Their efforts bested Ibrahim Zadran’s epic 162 off 138 balls – easily the highest ODI score by an Aghanistan batter, the previous best being Mohammad Shahzad’s 131 not out against Zimbabwe. His innings had formed the spine of the Afghanistan batting performance, while he and Najibullah Zadran put on 154 off 141 together to rescue Afghanistan from a precarious 57 for 3, and deliver them to a position of strength. That partnership was Afghanistan’s best-ever for the fourth wicket, and they had produced a good finish thereafter too, making 87 off the last 10 overs, of which Ibrahim hit 56.Ibrahim Zadran’s 162 was the best-ever for an Afghanistan batter in ODIs•AFP/Getty ImagesBut although the highest previous successful chase at Pallekele had been Sri Lanka’s running down a target of 297 against Zimbabwe, this target was achieved with two balls to spare. In addition to Asalanka, Sri Lanka were propelled through the late stages by Wellalage, who made 31 not out off 21. Together the pair put on an unbeaten 65 runs off just 39 balls for the seventh wicket. This is essentially the partnership that sealed the match for Sri Lanka, because when they came together, Sri Lanka needed to score at well over nine an over, and this was essentially the last recognised pair. It was Asalanka’s two sixes off Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the 45th over that signalled Sri Lanka’s charge as he smoked the bowler over long-on.Although the 47th over, bowled by Rashid Khan, went for just three runs, and left Sri Lanka needing 37 runs off the last 18 balls, Wellalage found his batting rhythm to take the pressure off Asalanka in the last few overs. He sent Fazalhaq Farooqi scorching past extra cover to end the 48th over, then struck three fours in the next over, bowled by Gulbadin Naib, scooping him over fine leg, slapping him through fine leg, then tonking him down the ground.Sri Lanka still needed 13 off the last over, bowled by Farooqi, and each batter hit a six. Wellalage’s was over cow corner, the shot palmed over the rope by a Rashid running full tilt to his left. Asalanka’s was over deep square leg, as Farooqi insisted on going short rather than full in the final over. All up, Asalanka hit four sixes and five fours, and had been limping – through cramp most likely – for the last third of his innings.Earlier, Mendis had been effective on the legside as ever as he went about pushing Sri Lanka above the required rate. Almost two-thirds of his runs came behind the wicket. He hit eight fours and a six in total.Even earlier in the game, though, Sri Lanka had Afghanistan by the collar. The visitors had been reduced to 57 for 3 after 14.1 overs at one point. But then Ibrahim and Najibullah rebuilt conscientiously before switching to accumulation mode through the early middle overs, then exploding as the death approached. In the first 55 balls of his innings, Najibullah struck only two fours. In the next 21 balls, before he got out in the 38th over, he hit six fours and one six. The scoring rate did not slow after Najibullah was dismissed. Having completed his hundred, Ibrahim took a firmer grip of the reins and forged productive partnerships with Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, and Noor Ahmad. His runs came all around the wicket by the end. He was out off the last ball of the innings, having struck 15 fours and four sixes.Sri Lanka pick up ten Super League points, which puts them at 77 total – still ninth on the list. They have only three more matches to play in the League. Afghanistan are currently placed seventh.

Starc and Maxwell take down Ireland despite Tucker's resistance

The margin of victory will suggest the defending champions have got their campaign back on track. But it was a less-than-perfect performance from Australia as they beat Ireland by 42 runs to join New Zealand on five points at the top of Group 1. Their net-run rate remains below England’s, which could come into play when semi-final spots are decided. After being asked to bat, Australia recovered from a slow start thanks to a half-century stand between Aaron Finch and Mitchell Marsh. But Ireland made regular incisions and Australia only brought up their 100 in the 14th over. It was then that Marcus Stoinis and Finch lashed out, against a hapless Mark Adair, whose third over cost 26 runs, to put Australia within sight of 200. The pair shared 70 runs for the fourth wicket before Ireland hauled them back at the death to keep them under 180.Importantly for Australia, Finch notched up his highest score in T20Is since March 2021 and highest in T20 World Cups since 2014. But he injured his hamstring in the process and was off the field from the seventh over of Ireland’s reply. Tim David and Stoinis also picked up niggles, and there will be concerns about how quickly they will heal up. Australia’s next match is in four days’ time, against Afghanistan. In Finch’s absence, Matthew Wade marshalled an attack which was outstanding upfront but took their foot off the gas later on. Ireland were 25 for 5 before Lorcan Tucker and Gareth Delany got together for a sixth-wicket stand of 43. Tucker ensured Ireland were not dismissed for any record-lows or bowled out for 104 or less (which would have put Australia’s net run-rate higher than England’s). He scored his fifth T20I half-century and was eventually stranded on 71*. Ireland’s semi-final hopes are slim. They have one match left to play, against New Zealand on Friday.Australia’s scratchy start
Australia were slow off the blocks against a disciplined effort from Ireland and took 14 balls before finding their first boundary. David Warner was tentative up front, followed a Josh Little delivery down leg but did not connect, slashed at an Adair full toss but only got it as far as cover and then pulled Barry McCarthy straight to short fine leg to depart for 3. He is yet to get going in this tournament, with 19 runs from three innings so far. Australia were 14 for 1 after three overs and added 24 runs in the next three overs to end the powerplay on 38 for 1 before Marsh smoked two sixes off Fionn Hand. Marsh was looking good but then didn’t move his feet when he tried to cut McCarthy and edged it behind. The Finch-Marsh partnership was worth 52 off six overs and laid a foundation for another strong stand later in the innings.Aaron Finch goes big•ICC via Getty Images

Adair’s awful over
Ireland had mostly kept a lid on Australia, with the run-rate below eight an over until the end of the 14th. And then things went awry. When Adair stepped up to bowl the 15th, Finch and Stoinis tucked in. Stoinis slammed a drive down the ground off Adair’s first ball, then lofted him to long-on – where McCarthy pulled off a great save – and then pulled Adair through short fine. Under pressure, Adair went on to deliver three successive wides before adjusting to back of a length, which Finch pulled for four. He finished with a full toss which Finch deposited over deep backward square to bring up his first T20I fifty of this tournament. In total, Adair bowled 11 balls in that over and conceded 26 runs. Little goes big
There’s plenty of hype around left-armer Little, who will play in the SA20 in the southern hemisphere. He put in another impressive showing against high-profile opposition. He started with two tight overs of mostly hard lengths in the powerplay and then struck in the middle and at the death to ensure Australia did not completely run away from Ireland. After his opening burst, Little was brought back for the 11th over where he set up Glenn Maxwell and removed him for 13. Australia were 84 for 3 and not progressing as smoothly as they may have hoped. He delivered the penultimate over, removing Stoinis and conceding only four runs to finish with 2 for 21 – Ireland’s most economical on the night.Australia on the attack
Ireland got away with one when Josh Hazlewood flicked Andy Balbirnie’s offstump but the bails did not fall. But that was as lucky as they got. In the next over, Balbirne shuffled across his stumps to flick Pat Cummins through fine leg only to be bowled. Two balls later, Paul Stirling toe-ended Glenn Maxwell to mid-off. At the end of that over, Maxwell got Tector to pull one straight to square leg. There was no let up at the other end, where Starc replaced Cummins and blew the Irish middle-order away. He bowled Curtis Campher and George Dockrell with almost identical deliveries that swung into them and beat the edge. Ireland were 25 for 5 inside four overs and chances of another upset had all but evaporated.Tucker shines alone
Throughout the tournament, Balbirnie has referred to Tucker as the batter who will lead Ireland’s line-up into the future and, with his team in disarray, he showed why. He hit Cummins over mid-on for four, two balls after the fifth wicket fell. He was similarly dismissive of Starc and picked up on any small errors in length. Overpitched on the pads? Tucker flicked. Back of a length? He pulled. He took 11 runs off Starc’s third over and 16 off this fourth and got more adventurous as his innings went on. Tucker scooped Starc over Wade, lofted him over the infield and then over mid-off and in total scored 35 runs off the 18 balls Starc bowled to him.
