Derbyshire sign Mohammad Amir for first half of 2024 season

Fast bowler has reportedly applied for British citizenship but will join initially as an overseas player

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Jul-2023Derbyshire have signed former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir as an overseas player for the first half of the 2024 season. He is expected to be available to play in the Championship and T20 Blast.Derbyshire had reportedly been exploring a move to bring in Amir as a local player, with the 31-year-old applying for British citizenship via his marriage. Amir worked with Derbyshire’s head of cricket, Mickey Arthur, when the South African was Pakistan coach, and has previous experience of playing county cricket with Essex and Gloucestershire.”Mohammad is a world-renowned fast bowler and someone who I am delighted to bring to Derbyshire,” Arthur said. “He will lead our attack in red ball and T20 for the first half of next season and I’m so excited to see what he will produce.”I know all about his quality, he has been a big-game player throughout his career and that’s something I’ve seen first-hand. I know the Derbyshire supporters are going to love seeing Mohammad charging in.”Amir retired from international cricket in 2020, having represented Pakistan almost 150 times across the formats. His most-recent first-class appearance was for Gloucestershire in May 2022, but he has an impressive record with 266 wickets at 22.63. He has spent much of the last two years playing on the T20 circuit, featuring in the PSL, BPL, CPL and LPL, as well as the inaugural edition of the Hundred.Amir said: “I’ve enjoyed my experiences of county cricket in the past and joining up with Mickey, who I’ve had so much success with internationally, is something I’m looking forward to.”The County Championship is so special and I’ve always enjoyed playing first-class cricket in England. I’ve spoken to Mickey about the quality in the squad and I want to put in the performances to help Derbyshire challenge in red and white ball cricket next summer.”

Liverpool sold "undervalued" star for just £15m, now he's like prime Foden

With Trent Alexander-Arnold injured, Liverpool’s focal England presence has been absent during the latest interminable international pause. However, Thomas Tuchel’s squad hasn’t been devoid of Merseyside representation.

Early days yet, but Curtis Jones has shown the first signs of being a mainstay through this new Three Lions era, starting Thursday evening’s win over Albania and featuring late on against Latvia on Monday.

He’s everything Slot and Tuchel wants in a midfielder, endowed with technical quality and an attacking outlook.

FBref’s data from the past year even suggests he bears a likeness to Manchester City’s Phil Foden, who may not be having the best of seasons but is certainly one of the most talented players this nation has produced in a generation.

Liverpool's answer to Foden

Jones, 23, will take delight in having chalked up 140 senior appearances for Liverpool already, directly involved in 39 goals and the lifter of five major honours – with a sixth said to be on the way.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones celebrates

Technically gifted, fit as a fiddle and wearing the tenacity of one playing for their club, Jones has gone from strength to strength since the managerial baton was passed, making his England debut and scoring back in November.

He’s now a fully-fledged member of the Three Lions set-up, given the nod by Tuchel this month and starting during last week’s 2-0 victory over Albania.

Given that Jones is somewhat similar to his countryman on the tactical front while also being a 24-year-old midfielder looking to make their name in the German’s new set-up, you might say that Jones is Liverpool’s own version.

Foden has received a share of flak in recent days after another uninspiring performance for his nation. The 23/24 Premier League Player of the Season is one of the most gifted footballers in the business, but he can’t seem to bring it together in white.

However, Lee Carsley and now Tuchel’s desire to unleash Jones in starting line-ups makes an interesting comment on the whole ordeal. As per FBref, Jones’ technical skill and eye for a goal make him one of Foden’s most tactically similar midfielders, corroborating the decision to feature him prominently for England.

Foden might have his struggles on the international stage, but he’s still been tipped to become “the best English player in history” by his Manchester City teammates Rodri and Erling Haaland, highlighting his abundant talent.

This all goes to show that Slot has quite the useful player on his hands in Jones, and that Liverpool will continue to benefit from his skill for many years.

However, Jones does play deeper than he was once touted – and that’s just fine – but with such glaring issues up top, such a player, one with a forward focus, would be relished given Liverpool’s current issues.

Well, Liverpool had such a player, but Klopp sold him a few years ago. Like Jones, this ace has a tactical likeness to Foden, but his more natural attacking game suggests he could have been the perfect tonic for the Anfield side’s problems in recent weeks.

The Former Liverpool star who is now similar to Foden

Dominik Szoboszlai is a terrific attacking midfielder and Harvey Elliott has that natural spark in the final third too, but Liverpool could have done with another part this term. Recent losses are cases in point.

The man in question, you might be surprised to read, is none other than Takumi Minamino – here’s why.

Now plying his trade at AS Monaco, Minamino joined Liverpool from RB Salzburg for a smart £7m fee in January 2020 and he went on to lift a number of trophies and play 55 times for Jurgen Klopp’s side, scoring 14 goals.

Only ever a bit-part player, Minamino, now 28, was sold to the Ligue 1 club for about £15m in June 2022 as Klopp repackaged his frontline.

Now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Minamino was a good player but hardly on Foden’s level, hardly hitting the same heights as the illustrious Englishman.

But Minamino can be cut from the same tactical cloth, a lesser version. The Japan international’s role as an attacking midfielder is one reason behind the semblance, with both capable across the frontline and indeed being utilised as such at Monaco.

But, moreover, it’s the way he plays the game that has drawn FBref to liken the two players. Minamino ranks among the top 2% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 17% for assists, the top 17% for progressive carries and the top 1% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90.

This is a marker of his prolific nature. Indeed, Minamino didn’t earn that many chances to impress at Anfield but he earned his keep. In 2021/22, for example, the nimble winger scored three times in the top flight despite only starting once. He also bagged seven goals across FA Cup and Carabao Cup campaigns – Liverpool went on to win both titles.

Monaco's Takumi Minamino

Turning back toward Liverpool’s present concerns: Minamino’s positional flexibility suggests he could have been an underrated part of the Slot machine, filling in across attacking midfield and wide positions with a potent style not dissimilar to Foden’s.

Most of Liverpool’s frontline stands at risk of exclusion this summer; Mohamed Salah is one of the greatest goalscorers in the club’s rich history but he’s overloaded with responsibility.

Such a dynamic attacking option could have been welcome to be sure. Journalist Josh Bunting once commented that Minamino was “undervalued” during his time on Merseyside, and maybe that’s the case.

He’s enjoying life in France and certainly has enough about him to have given Liverpool a bit more oomph in the final third this season. Perhaps it could have made all the difference in sustaining an unflagging multi-title charge.

Alas, Slot will have to settle for ‘just’ the Premier League title.

USMNT player ratings vs Switzerland: Trial by fire as Mauricio Pochettino’s inexperienced, ineffective squad concede four in first 36 minutes, roasted in final pre-Gold Cup test

The U.S. were battered in Nashville, continuing the bad vibes in a fourth straight loss ahead of the 2025 Gold Cup

NASHVILLE – The boos began in the 36th minute. In truth, they had probably been earned long before that. It was at that point, though, that the fans in Nashville had seen enough. It was hard to blame them, too, as they'd just seen Switzerland put four past the U.S. men's national team in a 23-minute span.

What followed in the ensuing 67 minutes was a variety of emotions: frustration, disappointment and, at times from the crowd, apathy. Just days before the Gold Cup kicks off and one year on from the World Cup, a 4-0 loss on Tuesday night hammered home a point that has been apparent for quite a while now: there's still a massive amount of work to do.

This was a comedy of errors, to be honest, each seemingly worse than the last. Miscommunication, nutmegs, poor goalkeeping – this one had it all and, from a USMNT perspective, none of it was good. It was a game – coming off a 2-1 loss to Turkey on the weekend – that showed not just the gulf in quality between this team and Switzerland, but the gulf in quality between this team and a full-strength USMNT. The players on the field, in reality, were not up for this challenge, and Switzerland drove that point home with each and every goal.

The inexperience cannot be understated. Over the two pre-Gold Cup friendlies, 20 different players got starts, with 12 of those 24 and younger. Moreover, 11 starters over the two matches had five or fewer caps coming into camp, and six got their first – Sebastian Berhalter, Matt Freese, Alex Freeman, Nathan Harriel, Quinn Sullivan and Damion Downs.

Yet, that didn't seem to soothe the sting. In truth, that isn't a referendum on the player pool or this program, but rather those on the field. Maybe the roster isn't quite as deep as Mauricio Pochettino thought. Those are questions for the end of the summer, though, after this group gets a chance to dig their way out through the Gold Cup.

"It's one of those ones where you need to take your licks and try to put them right in the next five days before the Gold Cup," veteran Tim Ream said on TNT. "I think there's some individual errors that we made and you'll get punished for on this level. You see it all around the world, and that's a learning process for guys with very few and first caps. It's a learning experience.

"We have to be calm and we have to keep our head on right. Analyze the first half, especially, there's things in the second half we can do better. If we do that, we'll be around."

This was the worst shutout for the USMNT since they lost 4-0 to Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying on November 15, 2016. This is also the first time since 2007 the U.S. lost four straight, and dropped Pochettino's record since taking over the team last fall to a pedestrian 5-5.

For perspective, the USMNT haven't lost four straight home matches since 1988, and Pochettino is also the first USMNT coach to lose five of his first 10 since Lothar Osiander from 1986-88.

This just made the hole deeper. The turnaround is relatively short as this team look to avoid making it five straight, as they kick off the Gold Cup on Sunday night against Trinidad and Tobago. In the days until then, Pochettino will need to rebuild this group as best he can because, going forward, this all matters even more.

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Matt Turner (2/10):

No excuses for turning the ball straight into the path of an onrushing Breel Embolo. Didn't help his case to start – in the slightest – as can be expected in a 4-0 defeat.

    Max Arfsten (3/10):

Was bypassed far too easily on Switzerland's second and, to be fair, had a few other scary moments, too. Has generally been solid since arriving on the scene, but not on this night.

    Mark McKenzie (3/10):

Had one bad giveaway go unpunished but then got blown by on the Swiss fourth. Was better in the second half, but the damage was done.

    Walker Zimmerman (4/10):

Miscommunication with Harriel on the opener but otherwise did his best on a bad, bad day for everyone.

    Nathan Harriel (3/10):

Was cooked multiple times by Dan Ndoye. A rough first start for the Philadelphia Union defender, who did look better in the second once he shifted from right-back to right-wingback due to the halftime changes.

    Midfield

    Johnny Cardoso (5/10):

Better than Saturday night, but it would be hard to be worse. Didn't offer too much defensively, but was at least smooth with his passing when he did get the ball.

    Sebastian Berhalter (5/10):

Definitely tried some things in his USMNT debut. Again, there were some defensive deficiencies with this midfield as both Berhalter and Cardoso let veteran Granit Xhaka run the show for Switzerland.

    Paxten Aaronson (6/10):

Was probably the best American player on the field in the first half, but that isn't saying much. Pressed hard and was fairly tidy on the ball, providing one of few reasons for optimism going forward.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Brendan Aaronson (4/10):

Ran plenty, but never really got a foothold in the game. Attempted just eight passes in his 45 minutes on the field.

    Brian White (4/10):

Had absolutely no answer for Manuel Akanji, who continuously won everything that came his way. Was taken out at the half in favor of a more physical striker in Patrick Agyemang.

    Quinn Sullivan (5/10):

Tried to do things, but just didn't really have the quality to make a difference. Picked up a yellow card just before the half in an attempt to set a tone, but was taken off at the half.

    Subs & Manager

    John Tolkin (6/10):

Was certainly much better than Arfsten, but also played in a different position as more of a wingback. Definitely earned another look.

    Tim Ream (6/10):

No mystery why he was thrown in – the U.S. needed stability badly. Nothing flashy, but he helped close the floodgates.

    Malik Tillman (7/10):

Pretty dynamic after coming on, building on what was a good performance against Turkey. Didn't quite have "the moment" in him but it seemed like, if anyone would, it would have been him.

    Diego Luna (6/10):

Exactly what you would expect. Again, no mystery as to why Pochettino would turn to one of the attackers he trusts most in these circumstances.

    Patrick Agyemang (7/10):

Certainly made an impact, getting through on goal a few times. One of the few Americans to even attempt a shot.

    Damion Downs (N/A):

Came on late and hardly got a touch of the ball. A debut is a debut, though.

    Mauricio Pochettino (3/10):

Learned a lot of ugly lessons this night. Some were about player selection, others were about tactics. The big lesson, though, is that this team has some very real issues in terms of quality, and that issue isn't particularly fixable this summer. With a limited roster, the Gold Cup could present a real challenge.

Alonso said of Valverde: "I haven't seen many players with his physical performance. He reminds me of someone like Steven Gerrard. He can play anywhere, and I'm very happy to be coaching him. All coaches would like to have a Valverde on the team. He got rid of the bad taste in his mouth from the penalty the other day today, and his determination was evident in his celebration."

With Los Blancos chasing another international title, Alonso's praised the 'discipline and sacrifice' the team are making to clinch this one. While Luka Modric was lauded for his continued excellence, Alonso revealed the team is still monitoring Kylian Mbappe’s fitness.

The coach added: “I'm not going to say that the three goals came because we worked on the attacking midfielders, but we did talk about it during the hydration break. Scouts sent: Roma join 3-club race to sign "fantastic" Sunderland ace

In what is a growing concern for Regis Le Bris, AS Roma have now reportedly joined the race to sign one of his most important Sunderland players ahead of this summer.

AS Roma racing to sign Sunderland star

Sunderland could yet fall victim to what has been a successful season if the current campaign doesn’t end in Championship promotion. As things stand, the Black Cats sit fourth and all but secure in the play-offs. But that’s just the start of their race to win a spot in the Premier League.

Set to compete in the play-offs, Sunderland will be well aware of just how heartbreaking Wembley can be and as talents continue to rise throughout their squad, the pressure will be on if they reach that final hurdle come May.

Sunderland in talks to agree deal to sign 18 y/o gem before end of season

Talks has been held over a move to the Stadium of Light.

ByHenry Jackson Mar 23, 2025

Players like Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham have both been the subjects of Premier League interest in the last year and both are players who should have their sights set on the Premier League.

As the summer approaches, however, they’re not the only ones who could be heading for the exit door in Wearside. According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, AS Roma have now joined the race to sign Dan Neil after officials spotted his talent whilst keeping an eye on current loanee Enzo Le Fee.

The Italians aren’t alone in their interest, either. They are reportedly joined by both Everton and West Ham United to form a three-club race which could yet end in the ultimate frustration for Sunderland.

Promotion could be key to "fantastic" Neil's stay

Whilst his role as captain would make any exit more complicated than it otherwise would be, Neil is a rising talent who should want to play at the highest level sooner rather than later. With just one year left on his current contract too, Sunderland may be left with no choice but to make a decision this summer if that issue remains unresolved.

The midfielder has earned plenty of praise during his time at the Stadium of Light, including from former manager Michael Beale, who told reporters: “Dan’s a fantastic player.

“There’s a lot of eyes on Dan because he’s got a lot of potential. Hugely important player in our squad and I’ve been super impressed with him since I joined the club. It’s important for him that he focuses on his game and plays well because this is the level he wants to play at regularly, you know, against these players.”

As the current campaign nears a conclusion, the future of several key players may well rely on whether Sunderland find themselves back in the Premier League next season.

Wolves eyeing move to sign "exquisite" teenage sensation ahead of Liverpool

In what would be a major coup, Wolverhampton Wanderers are now reportedly eyeing a move to sign a teenage sensation ahead of several Premier League sides.

Wolves targeting attacking reinforcements

Still in a good position to secure survival, Wolverhampton Wanderers can seemingly set their sights on welcoming some much-needed reinforcements ahead of Vitor Pereira’s first full campaign in charge.

On that front, the first task on their summer list of priorities will likely be to replace Matheus Cunha, who has attracted impressive admirers across the Premier League.

Wolves make contact in shock move to sign "special" winger once worth £73m

This would be a major coup…

By
Tom Cunningham

Apr 4, 2025

After Cunha recently commented on his future, claiming that he wants to be fighting for titles, Pereira responded by telling reporters: “Next season, I don’t know [if Cunha stays]. The focus is the next game and the team, and Cunha is a part of the team. In the summer, we will see what happens but in my opinion, it is normal that a player of his potential is ambitious.

“If the training gives me the confidence to go with Cunha, I will go with Cunha because he has the quality to help us and he has already helped us a lot with goals and assists.”

If those in the Midlands are to replace their star man then they will need to set their ambitions high, which could yet see a player of Sem Steijn’s calibre arrive. The FC Twente attacking midfielder has scored as many as 26 goals in all competitions and should certainly be high up on Wolves’ list of candidates to replace Cunha this summer.

Sem Steijn for FC Twente against Man Utd.

Meanwhile, names such as Jadon Sancho have recently been mentioned in what would be the ultimate shock this summer. The Chelsea loanee has struggled once again in the Premier League this season and looks destined to return to Manchester United. It’s then that Wolves could pull off one of the most interesting deals of the transfer window.

Wolves join race to sign Rayan

Away from Sancho and on to stars for the future, those at Molineux have also set their sights on the next South American wonderkid. According to The Boot Room, Wolves are now eyeing a move to sign Rayan from Vasco da Gama ahead of Liverpool this summer. The 18-year-old winger has impressed in Brazil, with Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolves and Nottingham Forest all lining up for his signature.

Praised for an “exquisite finish” for Brazil’s U20s by South American football expert Nathan Joyes, Rayan looks set to have quite the decision to make when the summer arrives. Whether it’s Wolves who benefit from that decision or another Premier League side remains to be seen, however.

What Wolves can offer that Liverpool will struggle with is key game time and that should be the focus if they are to push on for Rayan’s signature in the coming months. A rising star who has already earned plenty of praise, Wolves could yet sign the next big thing this summer.

'I was not able to finish' – Hardik Pandya takes responsibility after India lose to West Indies

Hardik Pandya has accepted responsibility for going off-script as India lost the T20I series decider against West Indies on Sunday. Hardik, the India captain, arrived in the 11th over of the first innings and made just 14 off 18 balls.”If you see, we lost that period post ten overs since I came [in to bat],” he said in the post-match presentation. “I think I was not able to capitalise [on] the situation and took my time and was not able to finish. I think the boys really played well. I think, at that period when I went in, I kind of did not play exactly how it was supposed to be.”India had recovered from the loss of two early wickets at the time their captain arrived at the crease. They were 86 for 3 in the 11th over but were immediately tied down by West Indies. Only 20 runs came off the next 22 deliveries. India finished on 165 for 9 in their 20 overs. West Indies chased it down with eight wickets and two overs to spare.Related

Of late, Hardik has shown a tendency to bat time. He managed 77 runs at a strike rate of 110 in the T20Is on this tour. He was better in the ODIs, but 70 of the 82 he got from three innings came in one knock. “This has been a concern,” former India batter Wasim Jaffer said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time:Out. “He hasn’t been the free-flowing batter that he has been where he comes in and strikes it sweetly – doesn’t mean he’s hitting sixes but striking it nicely, rotating the strike.”Apart from that fifty he scored in the third ODI, where also he started very slowly but picked it up in the slog overs. But even then, he looked rusty. The partnership between him and Shubman [Gill] in that third ODI, because he started so slowly, Shubman struggled at the other end and he got out. So, for me, the way he has batted in this series, that’s a big concern because not every time he is going to start slowly and finish very strongly. We could see it in the T20s as well. As soon as he comes, the momentum drops down, the strike rate drops down, and it puts pressure on the other guys in the dugout as well. So something for him to take note and improve when the next opportunity comes.”As captain too, Hardik made some calls that raised debate, such as not bowling Yuzvendra Chahal out in the second T20I, which India lost, even though the legspinner was their best bowler with figures of 3-0-19-2.Hardik was asked about his thought process while deciding bowling changes in Lauderhill and he said, “It is what I feel at that moment. I don’t plan much about it. If I see the situation and if I believe which is a better option, I generally prefer that. It’s not rocket science, it’s just whatever my gut says at that time.”

Hardik: Youngsters putting their hands up saying ‘I got you’

India came back from 0-2 down in the series to push it to a decider and a lot of their best work was the result of their younger players acquitting well to international cricket. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma and Mukesh Kumar, who made their debuts on this tour, showed that they can play roles as important as the agenda-setter at the top of the innings, the middle-overs muscle and the death-overs specialist. That was a big positive for Hardik.Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma were two of India’s newbies who gave a good account of themselves•ICC via Getty

“It’s very wonderful, they got heart,” he said. “That is something which is very important in international cricket. You mentioned Jaiswal, Tilak and Mukesh but every youngster who is coming up, they are showing character. They have the belief. That is something I’ve seen very often now. Kudos to them, the way they came out and expressed themselves, took the responsibility. I couldn’t be happier as captain that all the youngsters are coming up and putting their hands up and saying, ‘you know what I got you’.”Senior players, including the regular captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, have been absent from India’s T20I assignments since the end of the 2022 World Cup. They are building a new bench for the next one coming up in ten months’ time in the West Indies and USA. With that in mind, Hardik highlighted the importance of looking at the bigger picture, even if working towards that goal meant taking in a few losses. It’s also why he chose to bat at the toss on Sunday even though India won the last game at the same ground chasing and did it with nine wickets and three overs to spare.”I believe that as a group we are going to challenge ourselves,” Hardik said. “All these [bilateral] games are the games where we are going to learn. It’s something which we have spoken in the group that anything which is difficult, we are going to try that and make sure that we get better. On hindsight, one series [loss] here and there is fine. It’s a longer process which I don’t think we need to explain much on it. But overall, the boys are committing to the cause which is very exciting.”We have enough time to figure out what is supposed to be done in T20s. Sometimes losing is good because it teaches you a lot of things. It does not cover up the messes which you do but I think, on the positive side, there is a lot of learning which we as a group have learned and special mention to all the boys. To be very honest, they committed themselves, when we were two-down [on Sunday] they kind of took the challenge on themselves and showed character, throughout the series as well. Yeah, it looked like a very one-sided game today, but at the same time, they kept the smile, they kept coming, they kept trying, winning and losing is a part of the process. We just have to focus on learning as well.”
