Dhaka Division hold on to Tier 1 top spot despite weather-hit draw in Cox's Bazar

Their fast-bowling trio helped Sylhet Division to an innings-and-26-run victory over Rangpur Division in the NCL Tier-1 match over the weekend. The result also helped Dhaka Division keep their lead in the points table despite their game against Dhaka Metropolis in Cox’s Bazar ending in a draw, with cyclone Hanum on the south-eastern coast allowing very little cricket to be played.Batting first in Khulna, Sylhet reached 415, only the third 400-plus score in their first-class history. Shamsur Rahman, playing for his fourth NCL side, struck 15 fours and two sixes in his knock of 160 off 252 balls. He added 180 runs for the fifth wicket with Tawhidul Islam, who made 62. For Rangpur, quick bowler Asadullah Galib took 5 for 107, his second five-for this season.Sylhet’s quick bowlers Khaled Ahmed, Abu Jayed and Rejaur Rahman Raja grabbed all ten wickets as Rangpur were bowled out for 159 in reply. Khaled took 5 for 50, while Jayed picked up four wickets and Raja took the other one.The trio then shared six more wickets in the second innings, with Jayed taking three to get to 300 first-class wickets. Jayed became the third Bangladeshi fast bowler to reach the milestone, following Mohammad Sharif (374) and Forhad Reza (312), as Rangpur were bowled out for 230 in the second innings after being asked to follow on.Barishal Division opened their account this season with a seven-wicket win against Khulna Division, who, despite the loss, remained on top of the Tier-2 points table.Ruyel Miah took four wickets and Kamrul Islam three as Khulna were bowled out for 142 in the first innings in Bogra. Moin Khan’s 76 then gave Barishal a 79-run lead after they had slumped to 121 for 8. No. 8 Moin added 98 runs for the ninth wicket with Kamrul, who added 30 to the total.Soumya Sarkar, who took four wickets in the Barishal innings, then remained not out on 96 with ten fours and three sixes as Khulna were bowled out for 225 in the second innings. Kamrul took four wickets for Barishal, who then needed 43.2 overs to knock off the 147 runs in the fourth innings. Moinul Islam made an unbeaten 71 to help them along.Chattogram Division picked up their second win after they beat Rajshahi Division by nine wickets in Sylhet. Sabbir Hossain’s quick maiden first-class century gave Rajshahi the perfect start. But his 123 off 122 balls, that contained seven sixes and 13 fours, couldn’t translate into a big score for his side. Rajshahi were bowled out for 309, with Shykat Ali taking five wickets.Chattogram replied with 437, with fifties from Parvez Hossain Emon, Mominul Haque, Shamim Hossain and Irfan Shukkur. Taijul Islam took his 29th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, having bowled 44.4 overs in this innings.Quick bowler Ifran Hossain’s five-for, however, dealt Rajshahi a heavy blow, as they were all out for 182. Nayeem Hasan took four wickets to add to his three in the first innings. Chattogram then needed just ten overs to knock off the required 57 runs in the fourth innings.

'I spoke to him' – Ansu Fati reveals chat with Lamine Yamal before he sealed move to Monaco as Barcelona wonderkid prepares to take over his No. 10 shirt

Ansu Fati revealed he had a chat with Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal before he sealed move to Monaco. He joined the Ligue 1 outfit on a season-long loan and as part of the agreement, Monaco holds the right to make the transfer permanent next summer for €11 million (£9m/$13m), depending on Fati’s impact in France. At the same time, Barcelona have extended the 22-year-old’s contract until June 2028, as they still see long-term potential in him.

Once hailed as Lionel Messi’s heir at Camp Nou, Fati’s momentum was disrupted by a string of injuries that hindered his progress. Since making his debut for Barcelona, he has accumulated 29 goals and 8 assists in 123 appearances. His decision to move to Monaco was influenced by his ambition to play regular top-flight football again and compete in the Champions League.

During the 2023–24 season, he was loaned out to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, but again injuries and patchy form limited him to just three starts. Whereas, in the 2024-25 campaign, he managed just six appearances in La Liga and failed to get a single goal contribution, which forced the Barcelona hierarchy to push him out on loan for regular minutes elsewhere.

WHAT FATI SAID

Before heading to Monaco, Fati shared that he had a conversation with Yamal, as, despite their careers taking different turns, the two La Masia products have maintained a close bond.

"I spoke to him. We're always together in Barcelona," he told nd I know he loves me very much and wishes me the best. It's mutual, and the truth is, almost the entire team has wished me luck. They're good people with whom I've been at La Masia for a long time. I wish them the best, and especially Lamine."

DID YOU KNOW?

When asked to explain why things didn’t quite work out at Barcelona, Fati offered a candid reflection: "I don't know. I've always tried to be as good as possible. I believe in God, and in the end, what happens to me is something I can't control, but I can minimize the risks, and that's what I do. I try to work as hard as possible to be as good as possible, and even if things don't work out, I keep fighting, and I'm sure I'll find my moment again and enjoy it again."

Despite the setbacks, Fati maintains immense gratitude for his parent club. He continued: "I'll always be grateful to Barça. I sincerely believe that changes are for the better. Of course, I'll be here this season, but I'll always be grateful to Barça. I had my experience at Brighton: many think it was bad, but it was a great experience. I started well, then I got injured and lacked consistency. Hopefully things will be different here, and I can have continuity and be involved a lot if the manager sees fit."

South Australia resumed on 27 without loss and soon were in Paris-inflicted strife. The left-armer began his wicket-taking spree in the first over of the day, removing Henry Hunt, who attempted an off-drive to a fullish delivery but edged to wicketkeeper Josh Philippe.Paris next dismissed Daniel Drew lbw for a duck with a superb inswinger which beat the right-hander, also attempting a drive, and struck him on the pads.SA opener Kelvin Smith was his next victim – the left-hander trying to cut a ball which dipped in and hit the top of middle stump. Three balls later, Redbacks captain Jake Lehmann was bowled for a duck when he missed another Paris delivery which nipped back off the seam.SA had lost 4 for 21 1 in the first eight overs of the day but WA had to wait another 31 overs for another wicket – again claimed by Paris. His fifth breakthrough came when McSweeney, playing an expansive drive to a widish ball, feathered an edge to Philippe.WA landed another blow in the next over with spinner Corey Rocchiccioli having Jake Carder caught behind when the left-hander tickled a leg-side ball to the keeper.Carder’s dismissal left the Redbacks reeling at 109 for 6 but Manenti and Harry Nielsen steadied the ship with an innings-high partnership of 83.The stand ended when Nielsen, who struck two fours and a six, fell to Cameron Gannon, edging to first slip from round the wicket, before Manenti increased his scoring tempo – he was ninth man out after hitting nine fours and two sixes in his 107-ball knock.

The Gunners, however, will have to part ways with a first-team member before they can sanction further buys, as a good chunk of their summer transfer budget was spent on bringing in Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. Williamson: 'Not over yet' for New Zealand's golden generation

“It’s not over just yet” for this group of New Zealand cricketers, Kane Williamson said* after his side’s elimination from the 2023 World Cup with a 70-run defeat to India in the first semi-final on Wednesday night. Their golden generation of players are still yet to win a World Cup together in either white-ball format, but Williamson insisted that they have a future.New Zealand have one of the oldest squads in the tournament, with only two players aged younger than 28, and the core will be in their mid-to-late-30s come the next 50-over World Cup in 2027. Trent Boult and Tim Southee, the oldest players in their squad at 34, were both expensive as India racked up 397 for 4, finishing with combined figures of 4 for 186 across their 20 overs.”It’s an ongoing effort as a side to keep trying to get better and push the boundaries of where we can get to as a team,” Williamson said. “You can only hope that, as we experienced from some of our leaders as young guys, that we can continue to bring players through – not just in the quality that [the senior players] bring, because we’ve seen that in spades throughout the last seven weeks, but also in how they’re approaching their cricket in order to try and move this team forwards.Related

“I think we’ve seen that too – so some good signs, certainly, in this last period of time. It’s not over just yet, but that’s where the focus is. You come to these tournaments and they can be small margins [which determine] whether you get further or not, but ultimately, it’s about growing as a group and becoming a better cricket team. I think the seven weeks were really valuable for us as a side: we wanted to go further, naturally, but we’ll reflect on it and take a lot of good out of it.”Williamson conceded that India had effectively batted his side out of the game at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. “They didn’t give us a sniff, really,” he said. “I suppose if you bat first and put 400 on the board, it’s a tick in the batting column and you go and try and do the job in the second half. It was tough out there: the ball swung a lot initially, so we had to work pretty hard but credit to India.”We didn’t create many meaningful opportunities that could actually change the flow of runs in that first half, and that wasn’t through lack of effort. It was just quality on the opposition side and we were sort of searching. They did it well from the start. For us, it’s sucking it up and taking it on the chin; taking those experiences to become a better side and move forward.”Williamson said that he would have chosen to bat first if he had won the toss, and said that conditions changed as the game wore on. “It was a used wicket, but a pretty good surface, really,” he said. “Conditions change as they go under lights… that’s fine: that’s what you expected, and they played really well.”We would have batted as well, but it’s the toss of a coin, isn’t it? You’re still trying to operate regardless of what you do [first]. And they certainly made the most of that opportunity. It’s not all on the toss, but they made best use of the conditions they had. We were certainly trying our best [but] it didn’t quite go our way today.”New Zealand started the tournament with four consecutive wins but lost five of their final six games, and struggled in the absence of the injured Matt Henry. Williamson himself only played four of their 10 matches, fracturing his thumb after coming back from an ACL rupture, and admitted that injuries had been tough to deal with.”The injuries weren’t helpful – you never want those – but there was still some good cricket there, and we had a couple of close losses… we had our fair share of bits and pieces go on, but that’s life. Most teams are dealing with something on any given day, but I think the attitude that the guys kept coming back with [was good].”19.30 GMT – This story was updated with fresh quotes

Desde então, o Time do Povo conseguiu apenas quatro empates e sofreu quatro derrotas.

TABU NO MARACANÃ

O jejum do Time do Povo no estádio Jornalista Mário Filho dura 12 partidas, e a equipe soma nove derrotas e três empates.
