Rohit Sharma and the ties that are a fraying

There are reports the India captain may retire from Tests after the tour of Australia, but what about his place in the XI in a must-win game at the SCG?

Alagappan Muthu31-Dec-20243:37

Time to take tough calls on Rohit and Kohli?

Rohit Sharma is tied to this team.”I was at home with my newborn in my arms and I was watching how KL [Rahul] batted [in Perth]. It was brilliant to watch.”He was on paternity leave for the first Border-Gavaskar Test. He was supposed to join them for the tour game in Canberra. He flew out early.”I was on the plane, luckily managed to get Wi-Fi on the plane and I was checking the scores.”He arrived in Perth on the third day of the first Test, exhausted. He went to the ground on the fourth. “I wanted to get a hit as well.” He was straight in the nets to train for the pink-ball Test in Adelaide, where India persisted with the makeshift opening combination that put them 1-0 up in the series. Rohit gave up his spot to Rahul.”It was actually pretty simple for me. Personally, not easy, but for the team, it made a lot of sense,” he said of his decision to bat in the middle order.Related

  • A sorry end to 2024 for India and Rohit

After three low scores, though, Rohit took back the opening slot. Ravi Shastri, his former coach, spoke about how it was important for India to have their captain in form. To get him there, the team had to move their best batter – Rahul – out of the position where he was having success and bump their second highest run-scorer in the 2023-25 World Test Championship – Shubman Gill – out of the XI.In the first innings in Melbourne, Rohit fell playing the pull shot. It was an unnerving sight, not least because it’s happened before. He was late on one to Matt Henry in Mumbai. He misjudged the length. It wasn’t short enough. He played half of one to Pat Cummins at the MCG. He misjudged the line. It was too wide. The pull is his shot. He goes for it on instinct. His instincts have been leading him astray. Rohit is averaging 6.2 after five innings in this series. For context, Courtney Walsh, batting eight innings at No. 9 and No. 11, averaged more when West Indies toured Australia for five Tests in 1996-97. Rohit averaged 13.30 in ten innings during the home season before the Australia tour too.”Sometimes those numbers can tell you that it’s been a while since he has got big runs. But for a person like me, I think it’s all about how I feel in my mind.”What is going on inside Rohit’s mind? He is closer to 38 than 37. There is evidence that India have an opener to take his place in the Test side and, based on the come-from-behind win in Perth and his subsequent displays with the ball, few will doubt that Jasprit Bumrah will be able to captain the Test side.India have to win in Sydney. Otherwise they will lose a trophy they have held for 10 years, and that could leave Rohit on the brink. There are already reports that he might retire after the fifth Test. But if he’s made that decision already, could he not step away now, when it seems like his presence is holding the team back and they have a series to level? It’s tough, taking a decision like that. Nobody wants to go out on a low.Rohit woke himself up on day four in Melbourne, fiddling with his fields, keeping his bowlers’ levels up, rising with every wicket, falling with every dropped catch. He was so involved with the game that his anguish at Yashasvi Jaiswal’s spills seemed out of character. Then he went out to open the batting for India in their chase of 340 and did okay. Against a new ball that was doing a fair bit, he was beaten only twice. His defence was solid. His focus on it was such that after blocking the 14th ball he faced, with soft hands and bat close to his body, he took a little while to realise that he had picked a gap. It was a significant change from the home season where at the first sign of trouble, he tried to hit out.Rohit Sharma is going through a famine of Test runs since October•Cricket Australia via Getty Images”This is a game of confidence,” India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar said. “So, no matter how much you practise, no matter how much you talk, in the end, when you get into the match, it’s very important to play 20-25-30 balls.”Rohit was facing his 40th ball of the innings. It was only the second time in 15 innings that he’d batted this long. He went on the attack. A forceful whip aimed at midwicket. Mis-hit. Caught at gully.Other out-of-form batters in this series have enjoyed a little luck. Steven Smith was scratchy for his first fifty runs in Brisbane. Marnus Labuschagne seemed so intent on not using his bat in Perth that people questioned whether he was even a batter. Virat Kohli could have been bowled through the gate for 47 in Perth or caught on 49. Yashasvi Jaiswal played and missed 12 times in the first hour in Melbourne. Rohit’s mistakes, on the other hand, were immediately and repeatedly punished. In the same year that he lived his dream of becoming a world champion, and welcomed a baby into his family, there is a gloom that’s settled over Rohit. When India were 46 all out on day one of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand in October, he decided to face the press – he didn’t have to, those are the days the batting coach earns his keep – and went “” [bring out your swords] to disarm the gathering of reporters. He was able to see a bad day as just that. A bad day. He could see both his team and himself doing better. After the defeat in Melbourne, he looked weary. Resigned.Too much of his captaincy in Australia seems to depend on whether Bumrah is fresh enough to bowl. The runs have dried up. Rohit Sharma is tied to this team. But those ties are fraying.

Talking Points: What is the secret to Devdutt Padikkal's success this IPL?

Also, why didn’t the Capitals try to knock the Royal Challengers out?

Alagappan Muthu02-Nov-2020What is the secret to Devdutt Padikkal’s success this IPL?The basics. A tall left-hand batsman with quick feet and outstanding timing, he has made 472 runs in 14 matches so far. No uncapped Indian in his debut season has made more.Padikkal’s success is built on his off-side play. And in case anyone’s forgotten, bowlers still target the top of off stump with the new ball, even in T20 cricket.Anrich Nortje tried to do that and was lofted for a one-bounce four over cover point. The shot brought Virat Kohli up to his feet, his eyes bulging out of his head. It was hit that cleanly. No left-hander has made more runs (236 at a strike rate of 136) through the off side than Padikkal. His weight transfer into the ball, his balance at the crease and his timing are all great assets for him going forward. Why didn’t Capitals try to knock Royal Challengers out?If you make the playoffs, wouldn’t you rather play a team that didn’t have Kohli and AB de Villiers in it?And when all you need to do for that is score 153 in 17.3 overs – that’s a run-rate of 8.7 – it seems a worthwhile pursuit. But remember, the Capitals were coming off four back-to-back losses. A theme of those losses was their batting malfunctioning badly. They couldn’t afford that in this must-win game. They had to ensure their own qualification first. And to do that, they simply had to win the game. That’s why they never really went after the target with the intention of knocking their opposition out of the IPL.Is the outswinger a weakness for Prithvi Shaw? His game is about hitting the ball on the up. When he is in form, he simply times the ball. When he is not, he looks like he’s trying to hit it too hard. And that’s where the problems begin.Since Shaw likes room to hit through the off side, he usually stays leg side of the ball. Since he’s more of a back-foot player, he can also at times be stuck on the crease. And with his bat starting around second or third slip as it comes down, he also has a tendency to get squared up.The outswinger can exploit all of these tendencies, whether it is by getting a nick through to the keeper or by beating the edge and knocking back the off stump as Mohammed Siraj did in the second over of the chase.According to ESPNcricinfo’s data, he has made 21 runs off 20 outswingers this season and lost his wicket to them three times. That translates to an average of 7 and a strike rate of 105.ESPNcricinfo LtdAre there better end-overs options than the wide yorker? On a slow pitch? Possibly. There was an offcutter that Daniel Sams bowled to Padikkal in the 15th over that didn’t just grip in the pitch. It almost refused to go to the other end.Eventually it did, but only so it could give the batsman three different headaches. Extra bounce. Lack of pace. And turn like a Muralitharan offbreak.Padikkal tried to scoop it, but the ball popped out to where short square leg would have been.Given that evidence, Sams should have been concentrating on hitting just back of a length with his slower balls. So long as he didn’t give any room, he would be golden. Instead he went for those wide yorkers in the 18th over and got whacked around by de Villiers and Shivam Dube for 18 runs.

Crystal Palace eyeing January move for goal-scoring star with 13 G/A in 2025

Crystal Palace are now weighing up a January move for a goal-scoring midfielder, who enjoyed a very impressive 2025 campaign.

Palace join race for new midfielder

Palace have fared very well recruiting young players in recent years, with Adam Wharton one of the best examples, most recently assisting Eddie Nketiah’s opening goal in the 2-1 victory against Fulham, which helped send Oliver Glasner’s side up to fourth in the Premier League table.

However, the Eagles seem to be in a constant battle to retain the services of their star players, with Eberechi Eze joining Arsenal in the summer, while Marc Guehi remains of interest to the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Wharton is also attracting interest from some of the world’s biggest clubs, with Manchester United and Liverpool being named as potential suitors, which means Glasner may have to start thinking about bringing in a long-term replacement before too long.

According to a report from Football Insider, Crystal Palace have now set their sights on a new target, with it being revealed they are weighing up a January move for UCD midfielder Adam Brennan, who has enjoyed a fantastic 2025 campaign.

Indeed, Brennan has amassed 13 goal contributions for the League of Ireland First Division side this term, registering nine goals and four assists in 28 outings, meaning a whole host of English clubs are now lining up to secure his signature.

Hull City invited the 18-year-old on trial last month, but the Tigers have now been joined by Birmingham City, Wrexham and the Eagles in the battle for his services.

Brennan could be one for the future

Despite competing in the second-highest division of Irish football, it is still impressive that the teenager managed to find the back of the net so regularly at such a young age during the 2025 campaign, showcasing that he could be a future star.

Crystal Palace could now sign £80k-a-week "warrior" in "good value" January deal

There has been a new update on the Eagles’ pursuit of a defender.

ByDominic Lund Dec 3, 2025

That said, with the Irishman yet to prove himself in the top tier, it could be a while before he is ready to test himself in the Premier League, and Palace should look to hold on to Wharton for as long as possible.

The former Blackburn Rovers man remains under contract until 2029, which means the Eagles should be in a strong negotiating position, and if they manage to keep the core of their squad together, they could make a real success of the current season.

Palace currently find themselves in the Champions League places, and managing to qualify for Europe again could convince Glasner to stay, amid previous interest from the likes of Man United and Tottenham Hotspur.

With the Austrian’s contract up in the summer, Palace retaining their top players could be the best course of action when it comes to keeping hold of their manager, but Brennan could also be a shrewd long-term addition to the squad.

Phillies, Giants Announcers Destroy Ump Over Laughably Bad Strike Three Call

The Philadelphia Phillies lost to the San Francisco Giants, 10-4, at home on Monday night and one bad call by the home plate umpire in a key moment had everyone, including the announcers of both teams, in utter disbelief.

Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto had a full count with two outs and two runners on in a four-run game in the bottom of the seventh. He thought he had drawn a walk on a pitch that was well outside the zone but was then stunned to hear Tony Randazzo ring him up with a called third strike.

The Phillies' announcers did not hold back on Randazzo:

"Oh my goodness, that's an awful call," Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "That is not a good call."

"That is way off the plate…That was as egregious a miss as you will see from a home plate umpire," Tom McCarthy added.

This call was so bad even the Giants' announcers were shocked:

Not great!

The Phillies fell to 9-7 on the season while the red-hot Giants improved to 12-4.

Ex-CEO convinced star will “go to Tottenham” in statement signing for Frank

Tottenham Hotspur have made a decent start to the campaign under Thomas Frank and could now be set to make a play for one of the world’s most renowned attackers to bolster their forward line, according to ex-Everton CEO Keith Wyness.

Admittedly, striking a balance has proved tricky for Spurs this season when it comes to maintaining Premier League consistency. Five victories, three losses and three draws have led to a respectable return now that the international break is here.

Still, there is an acknowledgment that Tottenham are struggling to put together free-flowing attacking moves, as evidenced by the fact they have kept the ball for a modest 53.7% of the time in top-flight action.

In attack, Randal Kolo Muani’s struggles and Dominic Solanke’s injury problems have left Frank without a prolific goalscorer to rely on, with Joao Palhinha, Richarlison, and Brennan Johnson tied as their best contributors on four strikes apiece.

Wales international Johnson divides some segments of the Spurs support and doesn’t always set the heather alight, though his knack of scoring crucial goals is something to take real encouragement from.

Regardless, Athletic correspondent Jack Pitt-Brooke told the BBC that he believes the former Nottingham Forest man is stuck between a rock and a hard place in North London.

With that in mind, Spurs could well now turn to a high-profile alternative to bolster the wide areas, per Wyness.

Wyness: Tottenham could sign Real Madrid star Rodrygo

According to the former Premier League official, in conversation with Football Insider, Tottenham could make a move for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo despite Liverpool also being in the hunt to sign the Brazil international.

Wyness even moots the possibility of a sensational Liverpool swap deal involving Florian Wirtz after hearing ‘whispers’, but believes that, if any Premier League side are going to win the race, then Spurs are most likely and will pay the money required.

This campaign, Rodrygo has completed ten dribbles on league duty and also directed five of his ten shots on target, proving that he is a livewire despite having to contend with premium talent such as Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Jr.

At 24 years of age, it is suspected that he may consider a move to the Premier League after falling out of contention as an automatic starter, and Spurs may be at the front of the queue given he would likely step straight in as a key member of their squad.

9/10 Everton ace was "always struggling", now he's as undroppable as Ndiaye

What to make of Everton? In the first half at the Stadium of Light, David Moyes’ tactics worked a treat, with Sunderland unable to match the visitors’ intensity and, crucially, unable to prevent Iliman Ndiaye’s brilliance.

This was a display of resilience and grit, though it was reduced to that samey standard by Everton’s own unravelling of their progressive play. Moyes’ side reverted to type, you could say, not quite shelling up but releasing their hold on the fluency that had played the Black Cats off the park in the early rounds of the fight.

As it is, the point gained on Monday night moves the Toffees a point ahead of Fulham and into 14th place in the Premier League, though one win in seven fixtures is admittedly a concern.

Moreover, Everton have now gone six matches without a clean sheet. Jarrad Branthwaite’s continued absence is affecting the Blues, of course, but inviting pressure will invite goals, and that’s something Moyes’ side have been guilty of doing.

There’s a real chance to take this season by the scruff of the neck and push for a place in the top half of the table. After all, with Ndiaye (and Jack Grealish) in the side, such dreams are achievable.

Iliman Ndiaye strikes again

Everton made their pressure count after 15 minutes in Sunderland, with Ndiaye collecting from the right and shimmying his way down into the box and sending a perfectly-placed shot past Robin Roefs.

Presenter Jamie O’Hara described the 25-year-old as “one of the best players in the Premier League”, and the division is indeed waking up to the fact that this might be true. There is so much good about Ndiaye’s game; so often he is the difference-maker for Moyes’ team.

This season, he has scored four times from ten outings in the Premier League, assisting one goal too.

In fact, the Senegalese’s sumptuous finish has seen him peel away from Beto as the top goalscorer at the club since Moyes returned in January.

Ndiaye’s ability has been widened this term, though. Last year, the electric-paced winger was something of a direct force. You might even say he was a touch one-dimensional.

No longer. Grealish’s arrival has prompted a shift to the right, and while Ndiaye’s striker’s instinct remains, he has now added creativity to his game, averaging 1.3 key passes per match, as per Sofascore, and opening up dimensions from which the centre-forwards are not taking advantage.

Everton have attacking problems, alright, but we’ve perhaps forgotten how a blow Branthwaite’s absence might have been. Last season, for example, the Three Lions defender’s early-season unavailability sparked a four-match losing run that laid the foundation of Dyche’s demise.

But this time around, the Merseysiders are stronger at the back, and much is owed to one man in particular.

The Everton star thriving under Moyes

Everton need to improve under Moyes this season. There is enough quality to challenge higher up the standings, even with the strikers proving so wasteful in front of goal.

But some players have stepped up, and Michael Keane epitomises this, having come within a whisker of leaving the club at the end of his contract last season, instead adding one more year to his stay.

Everton defender Michael Keane

As Branthwaite languishes in the infirmary, Keane has stepped up and emerged as one of the key pillars of the campaign at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, starting all ten of Everton’s Premier League fixtures and playing every minute save for the win over Crystal Palace, when he was withdrawn after the hour mark.

Something of an aerial monster, the 32-year-old has been resourceful alongside the skipper James Tarkowski, who in truth has not been at his best over the past several months.

Keane, conversely, has shone, still limited technically and on the ball, but coming out on top across 62% of his ground battles. Furthermore, his 85% pass success rate suggests he is keeping things cool when playing out of defence.

And, of course, Keane has something of an unnatural instinct for goal, having scored twice under Moyes’ wing despite limited game time.

A contentious handball scare aside, Keane produced a rather faultless performance against Sunderland, standing strong against the second-half onslaught and winning five of seven contested duels, also blocking three shots and, incredibly, making 13 clearances (as per Sofascore), that final metric perhaps underscoring how deep Everton had sunk as the hosts cranked up the pressure.

Liverpool World actually awarded the 12-cap England international a 9/10 match rating, hailing his beast-like display in defence as he swept up the danger and made one brave header to prevent a certain goal during one frenzied scramble.

Everton pulled off a lot of business this summer. Moyes knew he’d enjoyed a successful window of wheeler-dealing, but the shrewdest deal of them all might have been extending Keane’s contract by an additional year.

The veteran defender has arguably outplayed Tarkowski beside him, and for a player whose career on Merseyside looked done and dusted, this is quite the resurgence for a side who, in hindsight, desperately needed someone of his ilk to steer them past the latest Branthwaite blow that has not derailed Moyes’ season so far.

In 2022, talkSPORT pundit Perry Groves said that the Toffees defender was “always struggling” for the club, so awkward on the ball that he looked like he was “not in control of his own body.”

Now, he has been revived, owing much, no doubt, to Moyes’ deep-rooted defensive principles. This is a player who is becoming every bit as undroppable as the flashy and fantastic Ndiaye this season.

West Ham join race for "insane" £105k-a-week striker who "loves a Cruyff turn"

West Ham United have now joined the race for an “insane” Premier League striker, who is keen to leave his current club.

West Ham looking to sign striker after Fullkrüg blow

In truth, Niclas Füllkrug has flattered to deceive ever since his arrival at the London Stadium, with the German failing to score in his first six Premier League matches this season, but the striker’s recent injury setback is still a blow for Nuno.

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has recently confirmed the 32-year-old has suffered a “torn muscle bundle in his thigh” on international duty, which means he will now be ruled out for several weeks.

That leaves Callum Wilson as the obvious choice to lead the line for the foreseeable future, but there are also major doubts over the former Newcastle United man.

£150k-per-week West Ham star now unsettled as club prepare January bid to test Sullivan

The Hammers may need to figure out a plan of action.

BySean Markus Clifford Oct 11, 2025

Wilson has struggled with injuries considerably over the past few years, missing 29 games due to hamstring and back issues across the 2024-25 campaign, so the 33-year-old is hardly a dependable option for the Hammers.

As such, it would make sense to enter the market for a new striker in the January transfer window, and that is exactly what West Ham plan to do, according to Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke, who credits them with an interest in Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee.

Zirkzee wants to leave Man United, with the centre-forward frustrated by the lack of opportunities this season, and O’Rourke believes he could “push for a move away” in January if Ruben Amorim doesn’t give him more regular game time.

The journalist also stresses the importance of the Irons signing a new striker, adding: “Michael Antonio left when his contract expired, and neither Fullkrug nor Wilson have nailed down that number nine spot in the West Ham side.

“So I think if West Ham are still in relegation trouble come January, I think bringing in a new striker will be key to their hopes of staying up.”

"Insane" Zirkzee could reignite career at West Ham

It would be fair to say the Dutchman’s move to Old Trafford hasn’t worked out, having scored just seven goals in 53 outings for the Red Devils, but there are signs he could be capable of reigniting his career at West Ham.

At 24-years-old, the ex-Bologna man still has time on his side, and he received high praise during his time in Italy, with scout Ben Mattinson describing the former Serie A star as “insane”.

Mattinson also suggested the £105k-a-week forward has the potential to establish himself among the world’s best strikers.

It would be a risk to sign Zirkzee, given that the Netherlands international is still yet to establish himself in England, but it is difficult for a player to make a name for himself without consistent game time, which has arguably halted his progress at Man United.
